The use of cavities to impact molecular structure and dynamics has become popular. As cavities, in particular plasmonic nanocavities, are lossy and the lifetime of their modes can be very short, their lossy nature must be incorporated into the calculations. The Lindblad master equation is commonly considered as an appropriate tool to describe this lossy nature. This approach requires the dynamics of the density operator and is thus substantially more costly than approaches employing the Schrödinger equation for the quantum wave function when several or many nuclear degrees of freedom are involved. In this work we compare numerically the Lindblad and Schrödinger descriptions discussed in the literature for a molecular example where the cavity is pumped by a laser. The laser and cavity properties are varied over a range of parameters. It is found that the Schrödinger description adequately describes the dynamics of the polaritons and emission signal as long as the laser intensity is moderate and the pump time is not much longer than the lifetime of the cavity mode. Otherwise, it is demonstrated that the Schrödinger description gradually fails. We also show that the failure of the Schrödinger description can often be remedied by renormalizing the wave function at every step of the time propagation. The results are discussed and analyzed.

The laser-induced alignment-and-orientation (A&O) dynamics of the prolate symmetric top CH$_3$X (X = F, Cl, Br, I) molecules is investigated, with particular emphasis on the effect of halogen substitution on the rotational constants, dipole moments, and polarizabilities of these species, as these quantities determine the A&O dynamics. Insight into possible control schemes for preferred A&O dynamics of halogenated molecules and best practices for A&O simulations are provided, as well. It is shown that for accurate A&O-dynamics simulations it is necessary to employ large basis sets and high levels of electron correlation when computing the rotational constants, dipole moments, and polarizabilities. The benchmark-quality values of these molecular parameters, corresponding to the equilibrium, as well as the vibrationally averaged structures are obtained with the help of the focal-point analysis (FPA) technique and explicit electronic-structure computations utilizing the gold-standard CCSD(T) approach, basis sets up to quintuple-zeta quality, core-correlation contributions and, in particular, relativistic effects for CH$_3$Br and CH$_3$I. It is shown that the different A&O behavior of the CH$_3$X molecules in the optical regime is mostly caused by the differences in their polarizability anisotropy, in other terms, the size of the halogen atom. In contrast, the A&O dynamics of the CH$_3$X series induced by an intense few-cycle THz pulse is mostly governed by changes in the rotational constants, due to the similar dipole moments of the CH$_3$X molecules. The A&O dynamics is most sensitive to the $B$ rotational constant: even the difference between its equilibrium and vibrationally-averaged values results in noticeably different A&O dynamics. The contribution of rotational states having different symmetry, weighted by nuclear-spin statistics, to the A&O dynamics is also studied.

The C2 spectrum is characterized by many band systems with new ones still being actively identified; astronomical observations involve eight of these bands. Recently, Furtenbacher et al. (2016, Astrophys. J. Suppl., 224, 44) presented a set of 5699 empirical energy levels for 12C2, distributed among 11 electronic states and 98 vibronic bands, derived from 42 experimental studies and obtained using the MARVEL (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) procedure. Here, we add data from 13 new sources and update data from 5 sources. Many of these data sources characterize high-lying electronic states, including the newly detected 3Pig state. Older studies have been included following improvements in the MARVEL procedure which allow their uncertainties to be estimated. These older works in particular determine levels in the C1Pig state, the upper state of the insufficiently characterized Deslandres-d'Azambuja (C1Pig-A1Piu) band. The new compilation considers a total of 31323 transitions and derives 7047 empirical(MARVEL) energy levels spanning 20 electronic and 142 vibronic states. These new empirical energy levels are used here to update the 8states C2 ExoMol line list. This updated line list is highly suitable for high-resolution cross-correlation studies in astronomical spectroscopy of, for example, exoplanets, as 99.4% of the transitions with intensities over 10^(-18) cm/molecule at 1000 K have frequencies determined by empirical energy levels.

Compilation of transitions from both laboratory measurements and solar spectra, found in 18 publications, yields a dataset of 3002 rovibronic transitions forming elements of a measured spectroscopic network (SN). At the end of the MARVEL procedure, the majority of the transitions form a single, self-consistent SN component of 2954 rovibronic transitions and 1058 energy levels, \NoX, \NoA, and \Noc\ for the \X, \A, and \Sc\ electronic states, respectively. The \Sa\ electronic state is characterized by \Noa\ $Λ$-doublet levels, counting each level only once. Electronic structure computations show that unusually the CCSD(T) method does not accurately predict the \Sa\ excitation energy even at the complete basis set limit.

The theory of rovibronic spectroscopy of light-dressed molecules is presented within the framework of quantum mechanically treated molecules interacting with classical light fields. Numerical applications are demonstrated for the homonuclear diatomic molecule Na$_2$, for which the general formulae can be simplified considerably and the physical processes leading to the light-dressed spectra can be understood straightforwardly. The physical origin of different peaks in the light-dressed spectrum of Na$_2$ is given and the light-dressed spectrum is investigated in terms of its dependence on the dressing field's intensity and wavelength, the turn-on time of the dressing field, and the temperature. The important implications of light-dressed spectroscopy on deriving field-free spectroscopic quantities are also discussed.

A fundamental theoretical framework is formulated for the investigation of rovibronic spectra resulting from the coupling of molecules to one mode of the radiation field in an optical cavity. The approach involves the computation of (1) cavity-field-dressed rovibronic states, which are hybrid light-matter eigenstates of the `molecule + cavity radiation field' system, and (2) the transition amplitudes between these field-dressed states with respect to a weak probe pulse. The predictions of the theory are shown for the homonuclear Na$_2$ molecule. The field-dressed rovibronic spectrum demonstrates undoubtedly that the Born--Oppenheimer approximation breaks down in the presence of the cavity radiation field. A clear fingerprint of the strong nonadiabaticity is found, which can only emerge in the close vicinity of conical intersections. In this work, the conical intersection is induced by the quantized radiation field, and it is thus called a "light-induced conical intersection" (LICI). Dependence of the cavity-field-dressed spectrum on the cavity-mode wavelength as well as on the light-matter coupling strength is investigated. Essential changes are identified in the spectra from the weak to the ultrastrong coupling regimes.

Rovibronic spectra of the field-dressed homonuclear diatomic Na2 molecule is in- vestigated to identify direct signatures of the light-induced conical intersection (LICI) on the spectrum. The theoretical framework formulated allows the computation of the (1) field-dressed rovibronic states induced by a medium intensity continuous-wave laser light and the (2) transition amplitudes between these field-dressed states with respect to an additional weak probe pulse. The field-dressed spectrum features ab- sorption peaks resembling the field-free spectrum as well as stimulated emission peaks corresponding to transitions not visible in the field-free case. By investigating the dependence of the field-dressed spectra on the dressing-field wavelength, both in full- and reduced dimensional simulations, direct signatures of the LICI can be identified. These signatures include (1) the appearance of new peaks and the splitting of peaks for both absorption and stimulated emission, and (2) the manifestation of an intensity borrowing effect in the field-dressed spectrum.

Calculation of the rotation-vibration spectrum of H3+, as well as of its deuterated isotopologues, with near-spectroscopic accuracy requires the development of sophisticated theoretical models, methods, and codes. The present paper reviews the state-of-the-art in these fields. Computation of rovibrational states on a given potential energy surface (PES) has now become standard for triatomic molecules, at least up to intermediate energies, due to developments achieved by the present authors and others. However, highly accurate Born--Oppenheimer energies leading to highly accurate PESs are not accessible even for this two-electron system using conventional electronic structure procedures e.g., configuration-interaction or coupled-cluster techniques with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit). For this purpose highly specialized techniques must be used, e.g., those employing explicitly correlated Gaussians and nonlinear parameter optimizations. It has also become evident that a very dense grid of \ai\ points is required to obtain reliable representations of the computed points extending from the minimum to the asymptotic limits. Furthermore, adiabatic, relativistic, and QED correction terms need to be considered to achieve near-spectroscopic accuracy during calculation of the rotation-vibration spectrum of H3+. The remaining and most intractable problem is then the treatment of the effects of non-adiabatic coupling on the rovibrational energies, which, in the worst cases, may lead to corrections on the order of several \cm. A promising way of handling this difficulty is the further development of effective, motion- or even coordinate-dependent, masses and mass surfaces. Finally, the unresolved challenge of how to describe and elucidate the experimental pre-dissociation spectra of H$_3^+$ and its isotopologues is discussed.

Rovibrational states of the four dimers formed by the light and the heavy isotopologues of the methane and the water molecules are computed using a potential energy surface taken from the literature. The general rovibrational energy-level pattern characteristic to all systems studied is analyzed employing two models of a dimer: the rigidly rotating complex and the coupled system of two rigidly rotating monomers. The rigid-rotor model highlights the presence of rovibrational sequences corresponding to formally negative rotational excitation energies, which is explained in terms of the coupled-rotors picture.

Accurate, experimental rovibronic energy levels, with associated labels and uncertainties, are reported for 11 low-lying electronic states of the diatomic \TiO\ molecule, determined using the \Marvel\ (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) algorithm. All levels are based on lines corresponding to critically reviewed and validated high-resolution experimental spectra taken from 24 literature sources. The transition data are in the 2 $-$ 22,160 \cm{} region. Out of the 49,679 measured transitions, 43,885 are triplet-triplet, 5710 are singlet-singlet and 84 are triplet-singlet transitions. A careful analysis of the resulting experimental spectroscopic network (SN) allows 48,590 transitions to be validated. The transitions determine 93 vibrational band origins of \TiO\, including 71 triplet and 22 singlet ones. There are 276 (73) triplet-triplet (singlet-singlet) band-heads derived from \Marvel\ experimental energies, 123 (38) of which have never been assigned in low or high resolution experiments. The highest $J$ value, where $J$ stands for the total angular momentum, for which an energy level is validated is 163. $Q_{\rm int}$($T$), of the H$_2$$^{16}$O molecule is reported for temperatures between 0 and 6000 K. Determination of $Q_{\rm int}$($T$) is principally based on the direct summation technique involving all accurate experimental energy levels known for H$_2$$^{16}$O (almost 20~000 rovibrational energies including an almost complete list up to a relative energy of 7500 \cm), augmented with a less accurate but complete list of first-principles computed rovibrational energy levels up to the first dissociation limit, about 41~000 \cm\ (the latter list includes close to one million bound rovibrational energy levels up to $J = 69$, where $J$ is the rotational quantum number). Partition functions are developed for {\it ortho}- and {\it para}-H$_2$$^{16}$O as well as for their equilibrium mixture. Unbound rovibrational states above the first dissociation limit are considered using an approximate model treatment. The effect of the excited electronic states on the thermochemical functions is neglected, as their contribution to the thermochemical functions is negligible even at the highest temperatures considered. Based on the high-accuracy $Q_{\rm int}$($T$) and its first two moments, definitive results, in 1~K increments, are obtained for the following thermochemical functions: Gibbs energy, standardized enthalpy, entropy, and isobaric heat capacity. Reliable approximately two standard deviation uncertainties, as a function of temperature, are estimated for each quantity determined. These uncertainties emphasize that the present results are the most accurate ideal-gas thermochemical functions ever produced for H$_2$$^{16}$O. It is recommended that the new value determined for the standard molar enthalpy increment at 298.15~K, $9.90404 \pm 0.00001$ kJ~mol$^{-1}$, should replace the old CODATA datum, $9.905 \pm 0.005$ kJ~mol$^{-1}$.

The MARVEL analysis provides rovibronic energies for six singlet, six triplet, and two quintet electronic states. This well-determined energy difference should facilitate observations of singlet--triplet intercombination lines which are thought to occur in the interstellar medium and comets. The large number of highly accurate and clearly labeled transitions that can be derived by combining MARVEL energy levels with computed temperature-dependent intensities should help a number of astrophysical observations as well as corresponding laboratory measurements. The experimental rovibronic energy levels, augmented, where needed, with {\it ab initio} variational ones based on empirically adjusted and spin-orbit coupled potential energy curves obtained using the \Duo\ code, are used to obtain a highly accurate partition function, and related thermodynamic data, for $^{12}$C$_2$ up to 4,000 K.

Sources of uncertainty are reviewed for calculated atomic and molecular data that are important for plasma modeling: atomic and molecular structure and cross sections for electron-atom, electron-molecule, and heavy particle collisions. We concentrate on model uncertainties due to approximations to the fundamental many-body quantum mechanical equations and we aim to provide guidelines to estimate uncertainties as a routine part of computations of data for structure and scattering.

The report of an IUPAC Task Group, formed in 2011 on "Intensities and line shapes in high-resolution spectra of water isotopologues from experiment and theory" (Project No. 2011-022-2-100), on line profiles of isolated high-resolution rotational-vibrational transitions perturbed by neutral gas-phase molecules is presented. The well-documented inadequacies of the Voigt profile (VP), used almost universally by databases and radiative-transfer codes, to represent pressure effects and Doppler broadening in isolated vibrational-rotational and pure rotational transitions of the water molecule have resulted in the development of a variety of alternative line-profile models. These models capture more of the physics of the influence of pressure on line shapes but, in general, at the price of greater complexity. The Task Group recommends that the partially Correlated quadratic-Speed-Dependent Hard-Collision profile should be adopted as the appropriate model for high-resolution spectroscopy. For simplicity this should be called the Hartmann--Tran profile (HTP). The HTP is sophisticated enough to capture the various collisional contributions to the isolated line shape, can be computed in a straightforward and rapid manner, and reduces to simpler profiles, including the Voigt profile, under certain simplifying assumptions.
