We analyze solutions of strongly charged chains bridged by linkers such as multivalent ions. The gelation induced by the strong short range electrostatic attractions is dramatically suppressed by the long range electrostatic correlations due to the charge along the uncrosslinked monomers and ions. A modified Debye-Huckel approach of crosslinked clusters of charged chains is used to determined the mean field gelation transition self-consistently. Highly dilute polyelectrolyte solutions tend to segregate macroscopically. Semidilute solutions can form gels if the Bjerrum length $l_B$ and the distance between neighboring charged monomers along the chain $b$ are both greater than the ion size $a$.

Abstract:
Pulsed-laser deposition has been used to grow epitaxial thin films of the giant-dielectric-constant material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} on LaAlO_3 and SrTiO_3 substrates with or without various conducting buffer layers. The latter include YBa_2Cu_3O_7, La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4+δ} and LaNiO_3. Above 100K - 150K the thin films have a temperature independent dielectric constant as do single crystals. The val…

The value of the dielectric constant is of the order of 1500 over a wide temperature region, potentially making it a good candidate for many applications. The frequency dependence of its dielectric properties below 100K - 150K indicates an activated relaxation process.

We present the result of a theoretical study of inclusive quasi free electrofission of $^{238}$U. The off-shell $ $cross sections for the quasi free reaction stage have been calculated within the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA), using a Macroscopic -Microscopic description of the proton and neutron single particle momentum distributions. Electron wave function distortion corrections were included using the effective momentum approximation, and the Final State Interaction (FSI) effects were calculated using an optical potential. The fissility for the proton single hole excited states of the residual nucleus $^{237}$Pa was calculated both without and with contributions of the pre-equilibrium emission of the particles. The fissility for $^{237,238}U$ residual nuclei was calculated within the compound nucleus model. The $(e,e^{\prime}f)-$cross sections thus obtained were compared with available experimental data.

A simple model was constructed to describe the polar ordering of non-centrosymmetric supramolecular aggregates formed by self assembling triblock rodcoil polymers. The aggregates are modeled as dipoles in a lattice with an Ising-like penalty associated with reversing the orientation of nearest neighbor dipoles. The choice of the potentials is based on experimental results and structural features of the supramolecular objects. For films of finite thickness, we find a periodic structure along an arbitrary direction perpendicular to the substrate normal, where the repeat unit is composed of two equal width domains with dipole up and dipole down configuration. When a short range interaction between the surface and the dipoles is included the balance between the up and down dipole domains is broken. Our results suggest that due to surface effects, films of finite thickness have a none zero macroscopic polarization, and that the polarization per unit volume appears to be a function of film thickness.

For particles of radius $R$ with bare charge $Z$ and comparable absorbed charge $-N$ ($N \sim Z$), the correlations contribution to the spheres self-energy scales as $N^{3/2}/R$, and as $N/R$ for the interaction energy between two touching spheres. We show that the re-arrangement of charges due to polarization plays an insignificant role in the nature and magnitude of the interaction.

Polyelectrolytes such as single and double stranded DNA and many synthetic polymers undergo two structural transitions upon increasing the concentration of multivalent salt or molecules. First, the expanded-stretched chains in low monovalent salt solutions collapse into nearly neutral compact structures when the density of multivalent salt approaches that of the monomers. With further addition of multivalent salt the chains redissolve acquiring expanded-coiled conformations. We study the redissolution transition using a two state model [F. Solis and M. Olvera de la Cruz, {\it J. Chem. Phys.} {\bf 112} (2000) 2030]. The redissolution occurs when there is a high degree of screening of the electrostatic interactions between monomers, thus reducing the energy of the expanded state. The transition is determined by the chemical potential of the multivalent ions in the solution $μ$ and the inverse screening length $κ$. The transition point also depends on the charge distribution along the chain but is almost independent of the molecular weight and degree of flexibility of the polyelectrolytes. We generate a diagram of $μ$ versus $κ^2$ where we find two regions of expanded conformations, one with charged chains and other with overcharged (inverted charge) chains, separated by a collapsed nearly neutral conformation region. The collapse and redissolution transitions occur when the trajectory of the properties of the salt crosses the boundaries between these regions. We find that in most cases the redissolution occurs within the same expanded branch from which the chain precipitates.

The collapse of flexible polyelectrolytes in a solution of multivalent counterions is studied by means of a two state model. The states correspond to rod-like and spherically collapsed conformations respectively. We focus on the very dilute monomer concentration regime where the collapse transition is found to occur when the charge of the multivalent salt is comparable (but smaller) to that of the monomers. The main contribution to the free energy of the collapsed conformation is linear in the number of monomers $N$, since the internal state of the collapsed polymer approaches that of an amorphous ionic solid. The free energy of the rod-like state grows as $N\ln N$, due to the electrostatic energy associated with that shape. We show that practically all multivalent counterions added to the system are condensed into the polymer chain, even before the collapse.

We study the attractive interactions between rod-like charged polymers in solution that appear in the presence of multi-valence counterions. The counterions condensed to the rods exhibit both a strong transversal polarization and a longitudinal crystalline arrangement. At short distances between the rods, the fraction of condensed counterions increases, and the majority of these occupy the region between the rods, where they minimize their repulsive interactions by arranging themselves into packing structures. The attractive interaction is strongest for multivalent counterions. Our model takes into account the hard-core volume of the condensed counterions and their angular distribution around the rods. The hard core constraint strongly suppresses longitudinal charge fluctuations.

Abstract:
We analyze, by means of an RPA calculation, the conditions under which a mixture of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes can micro-segregate in the neighborhood of a charged surface creating a layered structure. A number of stable layers can be formed if the surface is sufficiently strongly charged even at temperatures at which the bulk of the mixture is homogeneous.

By means of a variational approach we study the conditions under which a polyelectrolyte in a bad solvent will undergo a transition from a rod-like structure to a ``necklace'' structure in which the chain collapses into a series of globules joined by stretched chain segments.

We have compared the Tenerife data with the {\it COBE} DMR two-year data in the declination +40°region of the sky observed by the Tenerife experiment. Using the Galactic plane signal at $\sim 30$ GHz, we show that the two data sets are cross-calibrated to within 5%. The high Galactic latitude data were investigated for the presence of common structures with the properties of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. The most prominent feature in the Tenerife data ($ΔT \sim 80μ$K) is evident in both the 53 and 90 GHz DMR maps and has the Planckian spectrum expected for CMB anisotropy. The cross-correlation function of the Tenerife and DMR scans is indicative of common structure and at zero lag has the value $C(0)^{1/2}=34^{+13}_{-15}\: μ$K. The combination of the spatial and spectral information from the two data sets is consistent with the presence of cosmic microwave background anisotropies common to both. The probability that noise could produce the observed agreement is less than 5%.
