A New Brown Dwarf Desert? A Scarcity of Wide Ultracool Binaries

Abstract:
We present the results of a deep-imaging search for wide companions to low-mass stars and brown dwarfs using NSFCam on IRTF. We searched a sample of 132 M7-L8 dwarfs to magnitude limits of $J \sim 20.5$ and $K \sim 18.5$, corresponding to secondary-primary mass ratios of $\sim 0.5$. We present the results of a deep-imaging search for wide companions to low-mass stars and brown dwarfs using NSFCam on IRTF. Preliminary modeling efforts indicate that we could have detected 85% of companions more massive than $0.05 M_{\odot}$ and 50% above $0.03 M_{\odot}$.

We present Gemini GMOS and Magellan LDSS-3 optical spectroscopy for seven ultracool subdwarf candidates color-selected from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Five are identified as late-type subdwarfs, including the previously reported sdM9.5 SSSPM 1013-1356 and L subdwarf 2MASS 1626+3925, and a new sdM8.5 2MASS 0142+0523. 2MASS 1640+1231 exhibits spectral features intermediate between a late-type M dwarf and subdwarf, similar to the previously identified high proper motion star SSSPM 1444-2019, and we classify both sources as mild subdwarfs, d/sdM9. 2MASS 1227-0447 is a new ultracool extreme subdwarf, spectral type esdM7.5. Spectral model fits yield metallicities that are consistent with these metallicity classifications. Effective temperatures track with numerical subtype within a metallicity class, although they are not equivalent across metallicity classes. As a first attempt to delineate subtypes in the L subdwarf regime we classify 2MASS 1626+3925 and the previously identified 2MASS 0532+8246 as sdL4 and sdL7, respectively, to reflect their similarity to equivalently classified, solar metallicity L-type field dwarfs over the 7300-9000 A region. We also detail preliminary criteria for distinguishing L subdwarf optical spectra as a roadmap for defining this new spectral class. The strong TiO bands and Ca I and Ti I lines in the spectrum of 2MASS 1626+3925 provide further evidence that condensate formation may be inhibited in metal-deficient L subdwarfs. We conclude with a compendium of currently known, optically classified ultracool subdwarfs.

We present a 20-pc, volume-limited sample of M7-L8 dwarfs created through spectroscopic follow-up of sources selected from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) Second Incremental Release Point Source Catalog. In this paper, we present optical spectroscopy of 198 candidate nearby ultracool dwarfs, including 12 late-M and L dwarfs likely to be within 20 pc of the Sun and 94 more distant late-type dwarfs. We have also identified five ultracool dwarfs with spectral signatures of low-gravity. Combining these data with previous results, we define a sample of 99 ultracool dwarfs in 91 systems within 20 pc. These are used to estimate the J- and K-band luminosity functions for dwarfs with optical spectral types between M7 and L8 (10.5<M_J<15, 9.5<M_K<13). We find a space density of 4.9 x 10^-3 pc^-3 for late-M dwarfs (M7-M9.5) and a lower limit of 3.8 x 10^-3 pc^-3 for L dwarfs.

A search for binary systems among the nearest L dwarfs

We have used the NICMOS NIC1 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain high angular resolution images of 51 ultracool dwarfs in the immediate Solar Neighbourhood. Nine systems are resolved as binary, with component separations from 1.5 and 15 AU. All of the systems have components with similar luminosities, and, consequently, high mass ratios, q > 0.8. Limiting analysis to L dwarfs within 20 parsecs, the observed binary fraction is 12(+7/-3). Applying Bayesian analysis to our dataset, we derive a mass-ratio distribution that peaks strongly at unity. Modelling the semi-major axis distribution as a logarithmic Gaussian, the best fit is centered at log(a_0) = 0.8 AU (~6.3 AU), with a (logarithmic) width of 0.3. The current data are consistent with an overall binary frequency of ~24%.

We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS imaging survey of 22 T-type field brown dwarfs. Five are resolved as binary systems with angular separations of 0"05-0"35, and companionship is established on the basis of component F110W-F170M colors (indicative of CH4 absorption) and low probabilities of background contamination. Prior ground-based observations show 2MASS 1553+1532AB to be a common proper motion binary. The properties of these systems - low multiplicity fraction (11[+7][-3]% resolved, as corrected for sample selection baises), close projected separations (a = 1.8-5.0 AU) and near-unity mass ratios - are consistent with previous results for field brown dwarf binaries. Three of the binaries have components that span the poorly-understood transition between L dwarfs and T dwarfs. Spectral decomposition analysis of one of these, SDSS 1021-0304AB, reveals a peculiar flux reversal between its components, as its T5 secondary is ~30% brighter at 1.05 and 1.27 micron than its T1 primary. This system, 2MASS 0518-2828AB and SDSS 1534+1615AB all demonstrate that the J-band brightening observed between late-type L to mid-type T dwarfs is an intrinsic feature of this spectral transition, albeit less pronounced than previously surmised. We also find that the resolved binary fraction of L7 to T3.5 dwarfs is twice that of other L and T dwarfs, an anomaly that can be explained by a relatively rapid evolution of brown dwarfs through the L/T transition, perhaps driven by dynamic (nonequilibrium) depletion of photospheric condensates.

Our sample of 36 stars consists predominantly of nearby (<30 pc) field stars, 5 of which we have resolved as binaries. Two of the binary systems, 2MASSI J0429184-312356 and 2MASSI J1847034+552243, are presented here for the first time. All 5 discovered binary systems have separations between 0.08"-0.53" (2-9 AU) with similar mass ratios (q>0.8, delta Ks < 1 mag). This result supports the hypothesis that wide (a>20 AU) very low-mass (M_tot<0.19 M_sun) binary systems are rare. The projected semimajor axis distribution of these systems peak at ~ 5 AU and we report a sensitivity-corrected binary fraction of 9% (-3%, +4%) for stars with primaries of spectral type M6.0-M7.5 with separations >3 AU and mass ratios q>0.6. Within these instrumental sensitivities, these results support the overall trend that both the semimajor axis distribution and binary fraction are a function of the mass of the primary star and decrease with decreasing primary mass. These observations provide important constraints for low-mass binary star formation theories.

Continuing our census of late-type dwarfs in the Solar Neighbourhood, we present BVRI photometry and optical spectroscopy of 800 mid-type M dwarfs drawn from the NLTT proper motion catalogue. The targets are taken from both our own cross-referencing of the NLTT catalogue and the 2MASS Second Incremental release, and from the revised NLTT compiled by Salim & Gould (2003). All are identified as nearby-star candidates based on their location in the (m_r, (m_r-K_S)) diagram. Three hundred stars discussed here have previous astrometric, photometric or spectroscopic observations. We present new BVRI photometry for 101 stars, together with low resolution spectroscopy of a further 400 dwarfs. In total, we find that 241 stars are within 20 parsecs of the Sun, while a further 70 lie within 1-sigma of our distance limit. Combining the present results with previous analyses, we have quantitative observations for 1910 of the 1913 candidates in our NLTT nearby-star samples. Eight hundred and fifteen of those stars have distance estimates of 20 parsecs or less, including 312 additions to the local census.
With our NLTT follow-up observations essentially complete, we have searched the literature for K and early-type M dwarfs within the sampling volume covered by the 2MASS Second Release. Comparing the resultant 20-parsec census against predicted numbers, derived from the 8-parsec luminosity function, shows an overall deficit of ~20% for stellar systems and ~35% for individual stars. Almost all are likely to be fainter than M_J=7, and at least half are probably companions of known nearby stars. Our results suggest that there are relatively few missing systems at the lowest luminosities, M_J > 8.5. We discuss possible means of identifying the missing stars.

We present the discovery of seven new T dwarfs identified in the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Low-resolution (R$\sim$150) 0.8--2.5 micron spectroscopy obtained with the IRTF SpeX instrument reveal the characteristic H$_2$O and CH$_4$ bands in the spectra of these brown dwarfs. Comparison to spectral standards observed with the same instrument enable us to derive classifications of T3 to T7 for the objects in this sample. Moderate-resolution (R$\sim$1200) near-infrared spectroscopy for a subset of these discoveries reveal K I line strengths consistent with previously observed trends with spectral type. Follow-up imaging observations provide proper motion measurements for these sources, ranging from $<$ 0$\farcs$1 to 1$\farcs$55 yr$^{-1}$. One object, 2MASS 0034+0523, has a spectrophotometric distance placing it within 10 pc of the Sun. This source also exhibits a depressed K-band peak reminiscent of the peculiar T dwarf 2MASS 0937+2931, and may be a metal-poor or old, high-mass brown dwarf. We also present low resolution SpeX data for a set of M and L-type dwarf, subdwarf, and giant comparison stars used to classify 59 additional candidates identified as background stars. These are primarily M5-M8.5 dwarfs, many exhibiting H I Paschen $γ$, but include three candidate ultracool M subdwarfs and one possible early-type L subdwarf.

We present the peculiar near-infrared spectrum of the newly discovered brown dwarf 2MASS J05185995-2828372, identified in the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. Features characteristic of both L and T dwarfs are present, namely strong carbon monoxide absorption in K-band, strong methane absorption in J- and H-bands, and red near-infrared colors. We discuss how the estimated photometric properties of this object are consistent with the observed J-band brightening of brown dwarfs between late-L and early-T dwarfs, making detailed study of this system an important probe of the L/T transition.

The stars were selected based on optical/near-infrared colours, derived by combining the NLTT photographic data with photometry from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release. Based on the derived photometric and spectroscopic parallaxes, we identify 111 stars as lying within 20 parsecs of the Sun, including 9 stars with formal distance estimates of less than 10 parsecs. A further 53 stars have distance estimates within 1-sigma of our 20-parsec limit. Almost all of those stars are additions to the nearby star census. In total, our NLTT-based survey has so far identified 496 stars likely to be within 20 parsecs, of which 195 are additions to nearby-star catalogues. Most of the newly-identified nearby stars have spectral types between M4 and M8.

We present initial results of our effort to create a statistically robust, volume-limited sample of ultracool dwarfs from the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release. We are engaged in a multifaceted search for nearby late-type dwarfs and this is the first installment of our search using purely photometric selection. The goal of this work is a determination of the low-mass star and brown dwarf luminosity function in the infrared. Here, we outline the construction of the sample, dubbed 2MU2, and present our first results, including the discovery of 186 M7--L6 dwarfs--47 of these are likely to be within 20 pc of the Sun. These results represent 66% of the ultracool candidates in our sample yet constitute an 127% increase in the number of ultracool dwarfs known within the volume searched (covering 40% of the sky out to 20 pc). In addition, we have identified 10 M4--M6.5 objects that are likely to be within 20 pc (or within 1$σ$). Finally, based on these initial data, we present a preliminary luminosity function and discuss several interesting features of the partial sample presented here. Once our sample is complete, we will use our measured luminosity function to constrain the mass function of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs.

The comparison of optical and 2MASS near-infrared photometry for large samples of catalogued proper motion stars has the potential to discover previously unrecognized nearby objects of rare type. In this paper we present the discovery of two new carbon dwarfs, LSR 2105+2514 and LP 758-43, which were drawn from proper motion lists and which lie in a sparsely populated part of optical/near-IR color-color space. Their optical spectra, exhibiting absorptions by C_2 and/or CN, are discussed. LSR 2105+2514 is believed to lie within 200 pc and would have M_(K_s) < 6.7, making it lower in luminosity than any carbon dwarf with a measured trigonometric parallax. LP 758-43, which is not as red but still probably cooler than the best studied carbon dwarfs, is believed to lie within 360 pc. Using our optical/near-infrared selection technique on published lists of proper motion stars, we hope in the near future to expand further the current sample of carbon dwarfs, which numbers only 31 objects at this writing.

A Flaring L5 Dwarf: The Nature of HαEmission in Very Low Mass (Sub)Stellar Objects

Time series spectrophotometry of the L5 dwarf 2MASS 01443536-0716142 showed strong Hαemission which declined by nearly 75% in four consecutive exposures. This behavior constrasts with that of 2MASSI J1315309-264951, an L5 dwarf which has shown even stronger Hαemission on four separate occasions. The observational database suggests that L dwarfs can be found in such strong flares only occasionally, with a duty cycle of order 1%. In contrast, the few, continuously-strong Hαemitters, including PC 0025+0447 and 2MASSI J1237392+652615, must either be (1) objects no older than 10-100 Myrs with continuously-active accretion and/or chromospheres, but which apparently formed in isolation from known young stellar clusters and associations, or (2) objects empowered by a different and unknown mechanism for the Hαenergy.

The results were obtained with low-resolution optical spectroscopic follow-up of candidate nearby-stars as a preliminary test of our methodology. M_J, derived using spectral indices, and 2MASS J are used to estimate distances. Out of the 70 objects observed, 28 are identified as previously unrecognized objects within 25 pc of the Sun, and up to 19 of these are within 20 pc. One, LP 647-13 is an M9-type dwarf at 10.5 pc making it one of the four closest M9 dwarfs currently known. We also discuss the chromospheric activity of the observed dwarfs.

We are currently undertaking a program aimed at identifying previously-unrecognised late-type dwarfs within 20 parsecs of the Sun. As a first step, we have cross-referenced Luyten's NLTT proper motion catalogue against the second incremental release of the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue, and use optical/infrared colours, derived by combining Luytens's m(r) estimates with 2MASS data, to identify candidate nearby stars. This paper describes the definition of a reference sample of 1245 stars, and presents a compilation of literature data for over one-third of the sample. Only 274 stars have trigonometric parallax measurements, but we have used data for nearby stars with well-determined trigonometric parallaxes to compute colour-magnitude relations in the (M(V), (V-K)), (M(V), (V-I)) and (M(I), (I-J)) planes, and use those relations to determine photometric parallaxes for NLTT stars with optical photometry. Based on the 2MASS JHK data alone, we have identified a further 42 ultracool dwarfs ((J-K > 0.99) and use (J-K) colours to estimate photometric parallaxes. Combining these various techniques, we identify 308 stars with formal distances of less than 20 parsecs, while a further 46 have distance estimates within 1-sigma of our survey limit. Of these 354 stars, 75, including 39 of the ultracool dwarfs. are new to nearby star catalogues. Two stars with both optical and near-infrared photometry are potential additions to the immediate Solar Neighbourhood, with formal distance estimates of less than 10 parsecs.

We present low-resolution spectroscopy of newly-discovered candidate companions to three stars in the Solar Neighbourhood. All three companions are M dwarfs, with spectral types ranging from M4 to M9.5. In two cases, G85-55`B' (M6) and G87-9`B' (M4), we have circumstantial evidence from spectroscopy, photometry and limited astrometry that the systems are physical binaries; in the third, G216-7B (M9.5), comparison of POSS II IIIaF plate material and the 2MASS image indicates common proper motion. The primary star in this system, G216-7A (M0), appears itself to be an unresolved, nearly equal-mass binary. All three low-mass companions are highly likely to be stellar in nature, although G216-7B lies very close to the hydrogen-burning limit.

We present near-infrared (1 to 2.5 micron) low-resolution spectroscopy of eleven ultracool dwarfs with spectral types ranging from M7 to L8. Combining our observations with data published previously by Leggett et al. (2001), we have measured equivalent widths for the strongest atomic features and constructed narrowband indices to gauge the strength of the strongest molecular features. Those measurements show that the behaviourr at near-infrared wavelengths is well correlated with spectral type, where the latter is defined from observations between 6300 and 10000 Angstroms. In particular, four indices designed to measure absorption in the wings of the 1.4 and 1.85 micron steam bands exhibit a linear, monotonic correlation with spectral type on the Kirkpatrick et al. (1999) system, allowing consistent calibration from both optical and near-infrared spectroscopy.

A Single Circumbinary Disk in the HD 98800 Quadruple System

We present sub-arcsecond thermal infrared imaging of HD 98800, a young quadruple system composed of a pair of low-mass spectroscopic binaries separated by 0.8'' (38 AU), each with a K-dwarf primary. Images at wavelengths ranging from 5 to 24.5 microns show unequivocally that the optically fainter binary, HD 98800B, is the sole source of a comparatively large infrared excess upon which a silicate emission feature is superposed. The excess is detected only at wavelengths of 7.9 microns and longer, peaks at 25 microns, and has a best-fit black-body temperature of 150 K, indicating that most of the dust lies at distances greater than the orbital separation of the spectroscopic binary. We estimate the radial extent of the dust with a disk model that approximates radiation from the spectroscopic binary as a single source of equivalent luminosity. Given the data, the most-likely values of disk properties in the ranges considered are R_in = 5.0 +/- 2.5 AU, DeltaR = 13+/-8 AU, lambda_0 = 2(+4/-1.5) microns, gamma = 0+/-2.5, and sigma_total = 16+/-3 AU^2, where R_in is the inner radius, DeltaR is the radial extent of the disk, lambda_0 is the effective grain size, gamma is the radial power-law exponent of the optical depth, tau, and sigma_total is the total cross-section of the grains. The range of implied disk masses is 0.001--0.1 times that of the moon. These results show that, for a wide range of possible disk properties, a circumbinary disk is far more likely than a narrow ring.
