Is Asymptotically Weyl-Invariant Gravity Viable?
Abstract: We explore the cosmological viability of a theory of gravity defined by the Lagrangian $f(\mathcal{R})=\mathcal{R}^{n\left(\mathcal{R}\right)}$ in the Palatini formalism, where $n\left(\mathcal{R}\right)$ is a dimensionless function of the Palatini scalar curvature $\mathcal{R}$ that interpolates between general relativity when $n\left(\mathcal{R}\right)=1$ and a locally scale-invariant and superf… ▽ More

Asymptotically Weyl-Invariant Gravity
Abstract: We propose a novel theory of gravity that by construction is renormalizable, evades Ostragadsky's no-go theorem, is locally scale-invariant in the high-energy limit, and equivalent to general relativity in the low-energy limit. The theory is defined by a pure f(R) = R^n action in the Palatini formalism, where the dimensionless exponent n runs from a value of two in the high-energy limit to one in… ▽ More

Critical Phenomena in Causal Dynamical Triangulations
Abstract: Four-dimensional CDT (causal dynamical triangulations) is a lattice theory of geometries which one might use in an attempt to define quantum gravity non-perturbatively, following the standard procedures of lattice field theory. Being a theory of geometries, the phase transitions which in usual lattice field theories are used to define the continuum limit of the lattice theory will in the CDT case… ▽ More

Renormalizing Spacetime
Abstract: We propose that the consistent field renormalization of gravity requires a specific Weyl transformation of the metric tensor. As a consequence, proper length and time, as well as energy and momentum, become functions of scale. We estimate the functional form of the field renormalization factor by imposing a minimum resolvable distance scale under an infinitesimal Weyl transformation. The derived t… ▽ More

New higher-order transition in causal dynamical triangulations
Abstract: We reinvestigate the recently discovered bifurcation phase transition in Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) and provide further evidence that it is a higher order transition. We also investigate the impact of introducing matter in the form of massless scalar fields to CDT. We discuss the impact of scalar fields on the measured spatial volumes and fluctuation profiles in addition to analysing ho… ▽ More

Recent results in Euclidean dynamical triangulations
Abstract: We study a formulation of lattice gravity defined via Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT). After fine-tuning a non-trivial local measure term we find evidence that four-dimensional, semi-classical geometries are recovered at long distance scales in the continuum limit. Furthermore, we find that the spectral dimension at short distance scales is consistent with 3/2, a value that is also observ… ▽ More

Lattice Quantum Gravity and Asymptotic Safety
Abstract: We study the nonperturbative formulation of quantum gravity defined via Euclidean dynamical triangulations (EDT) in an attempt to make contact with Weinberg's asymptotic safety scenario. We find that a fine-tuning is necessary in order to recover semiclassical behavior. Such a fine-tuning is generally associated with the breaking of a target symmetry by the lattice regulator; in this case we argue… ▽ More

Searching for a continuum limit in causal dynamical triangulation quantum gravity
Abstract: We search for a continuum limit in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity by determining the change in lattice spacing using two independent methods. The two methods yield similar results that may indicate how to tune the relevant couplings in the theory in order to take a continuum limit.

Quantum gravity without vacuum dispersion
Abstract: A generic prediction of quantum gravity is the vacuum dispersion of light, and hence that a photon's speed depends on its energy. We present further numerical evidence for a scale dependent speed of light in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity. We show that the observed scale dependent speed of light in CDT can be accounted for by a scale dependent transformation o… ▽ More

Exploring the new phase transition of CDT
Abstract: This work focuses on the newly discovered bifurcation phase transition of CDT quantum gravity. We define various order parameters and investigate which is most suitable to study this transition in numerical simulations. By analyzing the behaviour of the order parameters we present evidence that the transition separating the bifurcation phase and the physical phase of CDT is likely a second or high… ▽ More

What is dimensional reduction really telling us?
Abstract: Numerous approaches to quantum gravity report a reduction in the number of spacetime dimensions at the Planck scale. However, accepting the reality of dimensional reduction also means accepting its consequences, including a variable speed of light. We provide numerical evidence for a variable speed of light in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity, showing that it cl… ▽ More

Signature Change of the Metric in CDT Quantum Gravity?
Abstract: We study the effective transfer matrix within the semiclassical and bifurcation phases of CDT quantum gravity. We find that for sufficiently large lattice volumes the kinetic term of the effective transfer matrix has a different sign in each of the two phases. We argue that this sign change can be viewed as a Wick rotation of the metric. We discuss the likely microscopic mechanism responsible for… ▽ More

Hypothesis on the Nature of Time
Abstract: We present numerical evidence that fictitious diffusing particles in the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity exceed the speed of light on small distance scales. By axiomatically enforcing a scale invariant speed of light we show that time must dila… ▽ More

Evidence for Asymptotic Safety from Dimensional Reduction in Causal Dynamical Triangulations

Evidence for Asymptotic Safety from Lattice Quantum Gravity
Abstract: We calculate the spectral dimension for nonperturbative quantum gravity defined via Euclidean dynamical triangulations. We find that it runs from a value of ~3/2 at short distance to ~4 at large distance scales, similar to results from causal dynamical triangulations. We argue that the short distance value of 3/2 for the spectral dimension may resolve the tension between asymptotic safety and the… ▽ More
