The shift from a linear to a circular economy has the potential to simultaneously reduce uncertainties of material supplies and waste generation. To date, the development of robotic and, more generally, autonomous systems have been rarely integrated into circular economy implementation strategies. In this review, we merge deep-learning vision, compartmental dynamical thermodynamics, and robotic manipulation into a theoretically-coherent physics-based research framework to lay the foundations of circular flow designs of materials, and hence, to speed-up the transition from linearity to circularity. Then, we discuss opportunities for robotics in circular economy.

We introduce the concept of a viable generically toroidal crossing (gtc) Deligne--Mumford stack $Y$. This generalizes the concept of Gorenstein toroidal crossing space, which in turn generalizes that of a simple normal crossing scheme.
On such a space $Y$, we define by explicit construction a natural sheaf $\mathcal{LS}_Y$, intrinsic to $Y$. Our main theorem states that the set of nowhere vanishing sections $Γ(Y,\mathcal{LS}_Y^\times)$ is canonically bijective to the set of isomorphism classes of log structures on $Y$ over $k^\dagger$ compatible with the gtc structure.
The definition of $\mathcal{LS}_Y$ by explicit construction permits the effective construction of log structures on $Y$; it also enables logarithmic birational geometry, in particular the construction -- in some cases -- of resolutions of singular log structures.
Our work generalizes Theorem 3.22 in GS06 and our proof follows closely the proof of that theorem as given in GS06.

Quantum Sensing is a rapidly expanding research field that finds one of its applications in Fundamental Physics, as the search for Dark Matter. Devices based on superconducting qubits have already been successfully applied in detecting few-GHz single photons via Quantum Non-Demolition measurement (QND). This technique allows us to perform repeatable measurements, bringing remarkable sensitivity improvements and dark count rate suppression in experiments based on high-precision microwave photon detection, such as for Axions and Dark Photons search. In this context, the INFN Qub-IT project goal is to realize an itinerant single-photon counter based on superconducting qubits that will exploit QND for enhancing Axion search experiments. In this study, we present Qub-IT's status towards the realization of its first superconducting qubit device, illustrating design and simulation procedures and the characterization of fabricated Coplanar Waveguide Resonators (CPWs) for readout. We match target qubit parameters and assess a few-percent level agreement between lumped and distributed element simulation models. We reach a maximum internal quality factor of 9.2x10^5 for -92 dBm on-chip readout power.

Aims. Our main targets were to improve the understanding of the main properties of G316.8-0.1 (IRAS 14416-5937) radio source where the DBS 89-90-91 embedded clusters are located, to identify the stellar population present in this region, and to study the interaction of these stars with the interstellar medium. Methods. We analyzed some characteristics of the G316.8-0.1 radio source consulting the SUMSS to study the radio continuum emission at 843 MHz and the H I SGPS at 21 cm. We also used photometric data at the JHK bands in the region of DBS 89-90-91 clusters obtained from the VVV survey and supplemented with 2MASS catalogue. The investigation of possible stars associated with the H II region was complemented with the astrometric analysis using the Gaia Early Data Release 3. To study the young stellar objects we consulted the mid-infrared photometric information from WISE, Spitzer-GLIMPSE Surveys, and MSX point source catalog. Results. The photometric and astrometric research carried out in the IRAS 14416-5937 region allowed us to improve the knowledge about the DBS 89-90-91 embedded clusters and their interaction with the interstellar medium. In the case of DBS 89 cluster, we identified 9 astrophotometric candidate members and 19 photometric candidate members, whereas of DB S 90-91 clusters we found 18 candidate photometric members. We obtained a distance value for DBS 89 linked to G316.8-0.1 radio source of 2.9 (0.5) kpc. We also investigated 12 Class I YSOc, 35 Class II YSOc, 2 MYSOc and 1 CH II region distributed throughout the IRAS 14416-5937 region. Our analysis revealed that the G316.8-0.1 radio source is optically thin at frequency > 0.56 GHz. The H II regions G316.8-0.1-A and G316.8-0.1-B have similar radii and ionized hydrogen masses of 0.5 pc and 35 M, respectively.

During the optimization processes we account for the leakage toward non-computational states, an important non-ideality affecting transmon qubits. We also test and benchmark the optimal control solutions against the introduction of Gaussian white noise and spectral distortion, two key non-idealities that affect the control signals in transmon systems.

Quantum sensing is a rapidly growing field of research which is already improving sensitivity in fundamental physics experiments. The ability to control quantum devices to measure physical quantities received a major boost from superconducting qubits and the improved capacity in engineering and fabricating this type of devices. The goal of the QUB-IT project is to realize an itinerant single-photon counter exploiting Quantum Non Demolition (QND) measurements and entangled qubits, in order to surpass current devices in terms of efficiency and low dark-count rates. Such a detector has direct applications in Axion dark-matter experiments (such as QUAX[1]), which require the photon to travel along a transmission line before being measured. In this contribution we present the design and simulation of the first superconducting device consisting of a transmon qubit coupled to a resonator using Qiskit-Metal (IBM). Exploiting the Energy Participation Ratio (EPR) simulation we were able to extract the circuit Hamiltonian parameters, such as resonant frequencies, anharmonicity and qubit-resonator couplings.

In this setting it is expected that there is a family of algebraic varieties over the unit disc with general fiber X and special fiber the toric variety defined by the spanning fan of P. Building on recent work and conjectures by Corti--Hacking--Petracci, who construct such families of varieties, we determine the topology of the general fiber from combinatorial data on P. This provides evidence for the Corti--Hacking--Petracci conjectures, and verifies that their construction is compatible with expectations from Mirror Symmetry.

The generation of physiologically relevant in-vitro models of biological barriers can play a key role in understanding human diseases and in the development of more predictive methods for assessing toxicity and drug or nutrient absorption. Here, we present an advanced cell culture system able to mimic the dynamic environment of biological barriers while monitoring cell behaviour through real-time impedance measurements and imaging. It consists of a fluidic device with an apical and a basal flow compartment separated by a semi-permeable membrane. The main features of the device are the integration of a transepithelial electrical impedance (TEEI) meter and transparent windows for optical monitoring within a dual flow system. Caco-2 cells were cultured in the TEEI bioreactor under both flow and static conditions. Although no differences in the expression of peripheral actin and occludin were visible, the cells in dynamic conditions developed higher impedance values at low frequencies, indicative of a higher paracellular electrical impedance and thus suggesting accelerated barrier and tight junction formation with respect to the static cultures. TEEI measurements at high frequency also enabled monitoring the evolution of transcellular impedance during culture. The cells subject to flow showed a typical RC behaviour, while the controls showed minimal capacitive behaviour, again highlighting the differences between flow and static conditions.

We show that this function, which is of hypergeometric type, is a period of an explicit pencil of curves. Thus the pencil is a candidate LG mirror of the family of del Pezzo surfaces. The main feature of these surfaces, which makes the mirror construction especially interesting, is that the anticanonical system is empty: because of this, our mirrors are not covered by any other construction known to us. We discuss connections to the work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on hypergeometric functions.

We used our own visual spectroscopic and UBV photometric data of a 30' x 30' region centered at R.A. = 8h44m47.2s, Decl = - 45d58m55.5s. This information enabled us to estimate the spectral classification and distance of all stars present in the region. The proper motion was analyzed with data of the UCAC5 catalog and was used to identify the members of this association. We added JHK data from 2MASS and IRAS catalogs to check for the presence of infrared (IR) excess stars. RESULTS. We found that Bochum7 is an OB association with at least 27 identified stellar members (l = 265.12d, b = -2.0d) at a distance of 5640 pc. Its proper motion is mu(alfa)cos(delta) = -4.92+-0.08 mas/yr, mu(delta) = 3.26+-0.08 mas/yr. We derived an average heliocentric radial velocity of 35 km/s and were able to confirm the binary nature of the (ALS 1135) system and detect four new binary star candidates. Analysis of data for massive Bo 7 star candidates points towards a young age (< 3x10^6 years old) for the association, although the presence of a previous episode of star formation remains to be analyzed.

Interestingly enough, the instability strips of pre-ELM white dwarf and delta Scuti stars nearly overlap in the Teff vs. log g diagram, leading to a degeneracy when spectroscopy is the only tool to classify the stars and pulsation periods only are considered. We employ adiabatic and non-adiabatic pulsation for models of pre-ELM and delta Scuti stars, and compare their pulsation periods, period spacings and rates of period change. We found substantial differences in the periods spacing of delta Scuti and pre-ELM white dwarf models. Even when the same period range is observed, the modes have distinctive signature in the period spacing and period difference values. For instance, the mean period difference of p- modes of consecutive radial orders for delta Scuti model are at least four times longer than the mean period spacing for the pre-ELM white dwarf model in the period range [2000 - 4600] s. In addition, the rate of period change is two orders of magnitudes larger for the pre-ELM white dwarfs compared to delta Scuti stars. In addition, we also report the discovery of a new variable star, SDSSJ075738.94+144827.50, located in the region of the Teff vs. log g diagram where these two kind of stars coexist. The characteristic spacing between modes of consecutive radial orders (p as well as g modes) and the large differences found in the rates of period change for delta Scuti and pre-ELM white dwarf stars suggest that asteroseismology can be employed to discriminate between these two groups of variable stars.

Two low-mass pre-white dwarfs, which could be precursors of ELM white dwarfs, have been observed to show multiperiodic photometric variations. They could constitute a new class of pulsating low-mass pre-white dwarf stars. We present a detailed nonadiabatic pulsation study of such stars, employing full evolutionary sequences of low-mass He-core pre-white dwarf models. We have considered models in which element diffusion is accounted for and also models in which it is neglected. We confirm and explore in detail a new instability strip in the domain of low gravities and low effective temperatures of the $T_{\rm eff}-\log g$ diagram, where low-mass pre-white dwarfs are currently found. The destabilized modes are radial and nonradial $p$ and $g$ modes excited by the $κ-γ$ mechanism acting mainly at the zone of the second partial ionization of He, with non-negligible contributions from the region of the first partial ionization of He and the partial ionization of H. The computations with element diffusion are unable to explain the pulsations observed in the two known pulsating pre-white dwarfs, suggesting that element diffusion might be inhibited at these stages of the pre-white dwarf evolution. Our nonadiabatic models without diffusion, on the other hand, naturally explain the existence and range of periods of the pulsating pre-white dwarf star WASP J1628$+$10B, although they fail to explain the pulsations of WASP J0247$-$25B, the other known member of the class, indicating that the He abundance in the driving region of this star might be substantially larger than predicted by our models. Further discoveries of additional members of this new class of pulsating stars and their analysis in the context of the theoretical background presented in this paper will shed new light on the evolutionary history of their progenitor stars.

With these parameters these new pulsating low-mass stars can be identified with either ELM white dwarfs (with ~ 0.17 Mo) or more massive SX Phe stars. We identified pulsation periods of 3 278.7 and 1 633.9 s for SDSSJ145847.02$+$070754.46 and a pulsation period of 3 367.1 s for SDSSJ173001.94$+$070600.25. These two new objects together with those of Maxted et al. (2013, 2014) indicate the possible existence of a new instability domain towards the late stages of evolution of low-mass white dwarf stars, although their identification with SX Phe stars cannot be discarded.

Aims. We report a study of the global properties of some embedded clusters placed in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way to clarify some issues related with their location into the Galaxy and their stellar formation processes. Methods. We performed BVI photometric observations in the region of DBS 77, 78, 102, 160, and 161 clusters and infrared spectroscopy in DBS 77 region. They were complemented with JHK data from VVV survey combined with 2MASS catalogue, and used mid-infrared information from GLIMPSE catalogue. We also searched for HI data from SGPS and PMN radio surveys, and previous spectroscopic stellar classification. The spectroscopic and photometric information allowed us to estimate the spectral classification of the brightest stars of each studied region. On the other hand, we used the radio data to investigate the interstellar material parameters and the continuum sources probably associated with the respective stellar components. Results. We estimated the basic physical parameters of the clusters (reddening, distance, age, and initial mass function). We searched for HII regions located near to the studied clusters and we analyzed the possible link between them. In the particular case of DBS 160-161 clusters, we identified the HI bubble B332.5-0.1-42 located around them. We found that the mechanical energy injected to the interstellar medium by the more massive stars of this couple of clusters was enough to generate the bubble.

We employed the ESO MPI wide-field camera and obtained deep images in the VIc pass-bands in the region of the IC 2944/2948 complex (l ~ 294; b ~ -1), and complemented them with literature and archival data. We used this material to derive the photometric, spectroscopic and kinematic properties of the brightest (V < 16) stars in the region. The VI deep photometry on the other end, helped us to unravel the lower main sequence of a few, possibly physical, star groups in the area.
Our analysis confirmed previous suggestions that the extinction toward this line of sight follows the normal law (Rv = 3.1). We could recognize B-type stars spread in distance from a few hundred pc to at least 2 kpc. We found two young groups (age ~ 3 Myr) located respectively at about 2.3 and 3.2 kpc from the Sun. They are characterized by a significant variable extinction (E(B-V) ranging from 0.28 to 0.45 mag), and host a significant pre-main sequence population. We computed the initial mass functions for these groups and obtained slopes Gamma from -0.94 to -1.02 (e_Gamma = 0.3), in a scale where the classical Salpeter law is -1.35. We estimated the total mass of both main stellar groups in ~ 1100$ and ~ 500$ Mo, respectively. Our kinematic analysis indicated that both groups of stars deviate from the standard rotation curve of the Milky Way, in line with literature results for this specific Galactic direction.
Finally, along the same line of sight we identified a third group of early-type stars located at ~ 8 kpc from the Sun. This group might be located in the far side of the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm.

The quantum period of a variety X is a generating function for certain Gromov-Witten invariants of X which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. In this paper we compute the quantum periods of all 3-dimensional Fano manifolds. In particular we show that 3-dimensional Fano manifolds with very ample anticanonical bundle have mirrors given by a collection of Laurent polynomials called Minkowski polynomials. This was conjectured in joint work with Golyshev. It suggests a new approach to the classification of Fano manifolds: by proving an appropriate mirror theorem and then classifying Fano mirrors.
Our methods are likely to be of independent interest. We rework the Mori-Mukai classification of 3-dimensional Fano manifolds, showing that each of them can be expressed as the zero locus of a section of a homogeneous vector bundle over a GIT quotient V/G, where G is a product of groups of the form GL_n(C) and V is a representation of G. When G=GL_1(C)^r, this expresses the Fano 3-fold as a toric complete intersection; in the remaining cases, it expresses the Fano 3-fold as a tautological subvariety of a Grassmannian, partial flag manifold, or projective bundle thereon. We then compute the quantum periods using the Quantum Lefschetz Hyperplane Theorem of Coates-Givental and the Abelian/non-Abelian correspondence of Bertram-Ciocan-Fontanine-Kim-Sabbah.

Pulsating white dwarfs with hydrogen-rich atmospheres, also known as DAV stars, can be used as astrophysical laboratories to constrain the properties of fundamental particles like axions. Comparing the measured cooling rates of these stars with the expected values from theoretical models allows us to search for sources of additional cooling due to the emission of weakly interacting particles. In this paper, we present an independent inference of the mass of the axion using the recent determination of the evolutionary cooling rate of R548, the DAV class prototype. We employ a state-of-the-art code which allows us to perform a detailed asteroseismological fit based on fully evolutionary sequences. Stellar cooling is the solely responsible of the rates of change of period with time ($\dotΠ$) for the DAV class. Thus, the inclusion of axion emission in these sequences notably influences the evolutionary timescales, and also the expected pulsational properties of the DAV stars. This allows us to compare the theoretical $\dotΠ$ values to the corresponding empirical rate of change of period with time of R548 to discern the presence of axion cooling. We found that if the dominant period at 213.13 s in R548 is associated with a pulsation mode trapped in the hydrogen envelope, our models indicate the existence of additional cooling in this pulsating white dwarf, consistent with axions of mass $m_{\rm a} \cos^2 β\sim 17.1$ meV at a 2$σ$ confidence level. This determination is in agreement with the value inferred from another well-studied DAV, G117$-$B15A. We now have two independent and consistent estimates of the mass of the axion obtained from DAVs, although additional studies of other pulsating white dwarfs are needed to confirm this value of the axion mass.

Massive stars deeply modify their surrounding ISM via their high throughput of ionizing photons and their strong stellar winds. In this way they may create large expanding structures of neutral gas. We study a new large HI shell, labelled GS305+04-26, and its relationship with the OB association CenOB1. To carry out this study we have used a multi-wavelenght approach. We analyze neutral hydrogen (HI) line data retrieved from the Leiden-Argentina-Bonn (LAB) survey, new spectroscopic optical observations obtained at CASLEO, and make use of proper motion databases available via Internet. The analysis of the HI data reveals a large expanding structure GS305+04-26 centered at (l,b)=(305$^{\degr}$, +4$^{\degr}$) in the velocity range from -33 to -17 km/s. Based on its central velocity, -26 km/s, and using standard galactic rotation models, a distance of 2.5(+-)0.9 kpc is inferred. This structure, elliptical in shape, has major and minor axis of 440 and 270 pc, respectively. Its expansion velocity, total gaseous mass, and kinetic energy are ~8 km/s, (2.4(+-)0.5)x10^5 Mo, and (1.6(+-)0.4)x10^{50} erg, respectively. Several stars of the OB-association CenOB1 are seen projected onto, and within, the boundaries of GS305+04-26. Based on an analysis of proper motions, new members of CenOB1 are identified. The mechanical energy injected by these stars could have been the origin of this HI structure.

We provide a significant extension of the twisted connected sum construction of G_2-manifolds, i.e. Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy group G_2, first developed by Kovalev; along the way we address some foundational questions at the heart of the twisted connected sum construction. Some of the main contributions of the paper are:
(i) We correct, clarify and extend several aspects of the K3 "matching problem" that occurs as a key step in the twisted connected sum construction.
(ii) We show that the large class of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-folds built from semi-Fano 3-folds (a subclass of weak Fano 3-folds) can be used as components in the twisted connected sum construction.
(iii) We construct many new topological types of compact G_2-manifolds by applying the twisted connected sum to asymptotically Calabi-Yau 3-folds of semi-Fano type studied in arXiv:1206.2277.
(iv) We obtain much more precise topological information about twisted connected sum G_2-manifolds; one application is the determination for the first time of the diffeomorphism type of many compact G_2-manifolds.
(v) We describe "geometric transitions" between G_2-metrics on different 7-manifolds mimicking "flop**" behaviour among semi-Fano 3-folds and "conifold transitions" between Fano and semi-Fano 3-folds.
(vi) We construct many G_2-manifolds that contain rigid compact associative 3-folds.
(vii) We prove that many smooth 2-connected 7-manifolds can be realised as twisted connected sums in numerous ways; by varying the building blocks matched we can vary the number of rigid associative 3-folds constructed therein. This leads to speculation that the moduli space of G_2-metrics on a given 7-manifold may consist of many different connected components.

We prove the existence of asymptotically cylindrical (ACyl) Calabi-Yau 3-folds starting with (almost) any deformation family of smooth weak Fano 3-folds. This allow us to exhibit hundreds of thousands of new ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds; previously only a few hundred ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds were known. We pay particular attention to a subclass of weak Fano 3-folds that we call semi-Fano 3-folds. Semi-Fano 3-folds satisfy stronger cohomology vanishing theorems and enjoy certain topological properties not satisfied by general weak Fano 3-folds, but are far more numerous than genuine Fano 3-folds. Also, unlike Fanos they often contain P^1s with normal bundle O(-1) + O(-1), giving rise to compact rigid holomorphic curves in the associated ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
We introduce some general methods to compute the basic topological invariants of ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds constructed from semi-Fano 3-folds, and study a small number of representative examples in detail. Similar methods allow the computation of the topology in many other examples.
All the features of the ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds studied here find application in arXiv:1207.4470 where we construct many new compact G_2-manifolds using Kovalev's twisted connected sum construction. ACyl Calabi-Yau 3-folds constructed from semi-Fano 3-folds are particularly well-adapted for this purpose.

We have found strong selective emission of the N II 5000A complex in the spectrum of the LMC hypergiant HDE 269896, ON9.7 Ia$^+$. Since this object also has anomalously strong He II $λ$4686 emission for its spectral type, an unusually wide range of ionization in its extended atmosphere is indicated. The published model of this spectrum does not reproduce these emission features, but we show that increased nitrogen and helium abundances, together with small changes in other model parameters, can do so. The morphological and possible evolutionary relationships of HDE 269896, as illuminated by the new spectral features, to other denizens of the OB Zoo are discussed. This object may be in an immediate pre-WNVL (Very Late WN) state, which is in turn the quiescent state of at least some Luminous Blue Variables.
More generally, the N II spectrum in HDE 269896 provides a striking demonstration of the occurrence of two distinctly different kinds of line behavior in O-type spectra: normal absorption lines that develop P Cygni profiles at high wind densities, and selective emission lines from the same ions that do not. Further analysis of these features will advance understanding of both atomic physics and extreme stellar atmospheres.

Twisted Gromov-Witten invariants are intersection numbers in moduli spaces of stable maps to a manifold or orbifold X which depend in addition on a vector bundle over X and an invertible multiplicative characteristic class. Special cases are closely related to local Gromov-Witten invariants of the bundle, and to genus-zero one-point invariants of complete intersections in X. We develop tools for computing genus-zero twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of orbifolds and apply them to several examples. We prove a "quantum Lefschetz theorem" which expresses genus-zero one-point Gromov-Witten invariants of a complete intersection in terms of those of the ambient orbifold X. We determine the genus-zero Gromov-Witten potential of the type A surface singularity C^2/Z_n. We also compute some genus-zero invariants of C^3/Z_3, verifying predictions of Aganagic-Bouchard-Klemm. In a self-contained Appendix, we determine the relationship between the quantum cohomology of the A_n surface singularity and that of its crepant resolution, thereby proving the Crepant Resolution Conjectures of Ruan and Bryan-Graber in this case.

We calculate the small quantum orbifold cohomology of arbitrary weighted projective spaces. We generalize Givental's heuristic argument, which relates small quantum cohomology to S^1-equivariant Floer cohomology of loop space, to weighted projective spaces and use this to conjecture an explicit formula for the small J-function, a generating function for certain genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We prove this conjecture using a method due to Bertram. This provides the first non-trivial example of a family of orbifolds of arbitrary dimension for which the small quantum orbifold cohomology is known. We also obtain formulas for the small J-functions of weighted projective complete intersections satisfying a combinatorial condition; this condition naturally singles out the class of orbifolds with terminal singularities.

We show that a general Landau-Ginzburg fibre is birational to a Calabi-Yau variety if and only if a general anticanonical section of the weighted projective space is Calabi-Yau. We analyse the 104 weighted 3-spaces with canonical singularities, and show that a general anticanonical section is not a K3 surface exactly in those 9 cases where a generic Landau-Ginzburg fibre is an elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension 1.

Conifold transitions and Mori theory
Authors:

Abstract:
We show there is a symplectic conifold transition of a projective 3-fold which is not deformation equivalent to any Kaehler manifold. The key ingredient is Mori's classification of extremal rays on smooth projective 3-folds. It follows that there is a Lagrangian sphere in a projective variety which is not the vanishing cycle of any Kaehler degeneration, answering a question of Donaldson.

Gorenstein graded rings in small codimension have been studied recently from an algebraic point of view, but the geometric meaning of the resulting structures is still relatively poorly understood. We discuss here the weighted projective analogs of homogeneous spaces such as the Grassmannian Gr(2,5) and orthogonal Grassmannian OGr(5,10) appearing in Mukai's linear section theorem for Fano 3-folds, and show how to use these as ambient spaces for weighted projective constructions. This is a first sketch of a subject that we expect to have many interesting future applications.

The proof relies on methods introduced by Looijenga and Pikaart-De Jong, and on the theory of twisted G-covers, a theory announced without proofs in math.AG/9811059, section 3, and developed in the first few sections of this paper. This includes a moduli description of the normalization of the Harris-Mumford space of admissible covers, and a study of moduli of stable curves with abelian and non-abelian level structure.

Abstract:
A new high-quality set of orbital parameters for the O-type spectroscopic binary HD93205 has been obtained combining echelle and coude CCD observations. The radial velocity orbits derived from the HeII 4686 A (primary component) and HeI 4471 A (secondary component) absorption lines yield semiamplitudes of 133 +/- 2 and 314 +/- 2 km/s for each binary component, resulting in minimum masses of 31 a…

The radial velocity orbits derived from the HeII 4686 A (primary component) and HeI 4471 A (secondary component) absorption lines yield semiamplitudes of 133 +/- 2 and 314 +/- 2 km/s for each binary component, resulting in minimum masses of 31 and 13 Msol (q = 0.42). We also confirm for the binary components the spectral classification of O3V+O8V previously assigned. Assuming for the O8V component a ``normal'' mass of 22 - 25 Msol we would derive for the primary O3V a mass of ``only'' 52 - 60 Msol and an inclination of about 55 degrees for the orbital plane. We have also determined for the first time a period of apsidal motion for this system, namely 185 +/- 16 years using all available radial velocity data-sets of HD 93205 (from 1975 to 1999). Phase-locked variations of the X-ray emission of HD 93205 consisting of a rise of the observed X-ray flux near periastron passage, are also discussed.

In this paper, we study the birational geometry of certain examples of mildly singular quartic 3-folds. A quartic 3-fold is an example of a Fano variety, that is, a variety $X$ with ample anticanonical sheaf $Ø_X(-K_X)$. From the point of view of birational geometry they basically fall within two classes: either $X$ is ``close to being rational'', and then it has very many biregularly distinct birational models as a Fano 3-fold, or, at the other extreme, $X$ has a unique model and it is often even true that every birational selfmap of $X$ is biregular. In this paper we construct examples of singular quartic 3-folds with exactly two birational models as Fano 3-folds.

One of the main achievements of algebraic geometry over the last 20 years is the work of Mori and others extending minimal models and the Enriques--Kodaira classification to 3-folds. This book is an integrated suite of papers centred around applications of Mori theory to birational geometry. Four of the papers (those by Pukhlikov, Fletcher, Corti, and the long joint paper Corti, Pukhlikov and Reid) work out in detail the theory of birational rigidity of Fano 3-folds; these contributions work for the first time with a representative class of Fano varieties, 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space, and include an attractive introductory treatment and a wealth of detailed computation of special cases.
