We present Herschel-SPIRE observations at 250-500um of the giant elliptical galaxy M86 and examine the distribution of the resolved cold dust emission and its relation with other galactic tracers. The SPIRE images reveal three dust components: emission from the central region; a dust lane extending north-south; and a bright emission feature 10kpc to the south-east. We estimate that approximately 10^6 solar masses of dust is spatially coincident with atomic and ionized hydrogen, originating from stripped material from the nearby spiral NGC4438 due to recent tidal interactions with M86. The gas-to-dust ratio of the cold gas component ranges from ~20-80. We discuss the different heating mechanisms for the dust features.

We present infrared colours (in the 25-500 mic spectral range) and UV to radio continuum spectral energy distributions of a sample of 51 nearby galaxies observed with SPIRE on Herschel. The observed sample includes all morphological classes, from quiescent ellipticals to active starbursts. Active galaxies have warmer colour temperatures than normal spirals. In ellipticals hosting a radio galaxy, the far-infrared (FIR) emission is dominated bynthe synchrotron nuclear emission. The colour temperature of the cold dust is higher in quiescent E-S0a than in star-forming systems probably because of the different nature of their dust heating sources (evolved stellar populations, X-ray, fast electrons) and dust grain properties. In contrast to the colour temperature of the warm dust, the f350/f500 index sensitive to the cold dust decreases with star formation and increases with metallicity, suggesting an overabundance of cold dust or an emissivity parameter beta<2 in low metallicity, active systems.

M82 is a unique representative of a whole class of galaxies, starbursts with superwinds, in the Very Nearby Galaxy Survey with Herschel. In addition, its interaction with the M81 group has stripped a significant portion of its interstellar medium from its disk. SPIRE maps now afford better characterization of the far-infrared emission from cool dust outside the disk, and sketch a far more complete picture of its mass distribution and energetics than previously possible. They show emission coincident in projection with the starburst wind and in a large halo, much more extended than the PAH band emission seen with Spitzer. Some complex substructures coincide with the brightest PAH filaments, and others with tidal streams seen in atomic hydrogen. We subtract the far-infrared emission of the starburst and underlying disk from the maps, and derive spatially-resolved far-infrared colors for the wind and halo. We interpret the results in terms of dust mass, dust temperature, and global physical conditions. In particular, we examine variations in the dust physical properties as a function of distance from the center and the wind polar axis, and conclude that more than two thirds of the extraplanar dust has been removed by tidal interaction, and not entrained by the starburst wind.

The Herschel Reference Survey is a guaranteed time Herschel key project and will be a benchmark study of dust in the nearby universe. The survey will complement a number of other Herschel key projects including large cosmological surveys that trace dust in the distant universe. We will use Herschel to produce images of a statistically-complete sample of 323 galaxies at 250, 350 and 500 micron. The sample is volume-limited, containing sources with distances between 15 and 25 Mpc and flux limits in the K-band to minimize the selection effects associated with dust and with young high-mass stars and to introduce a selection in stellar mass. The sample spans the whole range of morphological types (ellipticals to late-type spirals) and environments (from the field to the centre of the Virgo Cluster) and as such will be useful for other purposes than our own. We plan to use the survey to investigate (i) the dust content of galaxies as a function of Hubble type, stellar mass and environment, (ii) the connection between the dust content and composition and the other phases of the interstellar medium and (iii) the origin and evolution of dust in galaxies. In this paper, we describe the goals of the survey, the details of the sample and some of the auxiliary observing programs that we have started to collect complementary data. We also use the available multi-frequency data to carry out an analysis of the statistical properties of the sample.

We present VLA H I imaging data for a field in the NW of the galaxy cluster Abell 1367 (z = 0.02) in an attempt to probe the effect environment has on the interstellar medium of late-type spiral galaxies. Several galaxies show pronounced tails and asymmetries, and 7 out of 10 show significant, several kpc offsets between the HI centroid and the optical. We compare our results against a sample of optically bright, late-type galaxies (spirals) across the central 1.5 Mpc of the cluster taken from the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES). We calculate the H I deficiency and find that the expected global trend for the H I deficiency of these spirals to increase with projected proximity to the cluster core, seen in clusters like Coma and Virgo, is not observed. We classified the spirals into four evolutionary states, with the galaxies in each state sharing a similar degree of H I deficiency and optical colour. The common characteristics of the spirals in each evolutionary state suggests they have been subject to similar environmental processes. Many of the spirals in the most common evolutionary state (moderate H I deficiency and blue colour) have an H I intensity maximum which is displaced relative to its optical counterpart. The orientation of these offsets and magnitude of their H I deficiencies together with data from other wavelengths provide observational evidence in support of varying degrees of ram pressure strip** and tidal interaction. In general, our results indicate that the H I disks of bright late-type galaxies in the central part of the cluster are subject to both gas loss and morphological disturbance as a result of their interaction with the cluster environment. This provides further observational evidence of a more complex environment in Abell 1367 as compared to Virgo and Coma.

We report the discovery of diffuse far-infrared and far-ultraviolet emission projected near the interacting pair NGC4435/4438, in the Virgo cluster. This feature spatially coincides with a well known low surface-brightness optical plume, usually interpreted as tidal debris. If extragalactic, this stream would represent not only one of the clearest examples of intracluster dust, but also a rare case of intracluster molecular hydrogen and large-scale intracluster star formation. However, the ultraviolet, far-infrared, HI and CO emission as well as the dynamics of this feature are extremely unusual for tidal streams but are typical of Galactic cirrus clouds. In support to the cirrus scenario, we show that a strong spatial correlation between far-infrared and far-ultraviolet cirrus emission is observed across the center of the Virgo cluster, over a scale of several degrees. This study demonstrates how dramatic Galactic cirrus contamination can be, even at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths and at high galactic latitudes. If ignored, the presence of diffuse light scattered by Galactic dust clouds could significantly bias our interpretation of low surface-brightness features and diffuse light observed around galaxies and in clusters of galaxies.

High mass star formation in normal late-type galaxies: observational constraints to the IMF

We use Halpha and FUV GALEX data for a large sample of nearby objects to study the high mass star formation activity of normal late-type galaxies. The data are corrected for dust attenuation using the most accurate techniques at present available, namely the Balmer decrement and the total far-infrared to FUV flux ratio. The sample shows a highly dispersed distribution in the Halpha to FUV flux ratio indicating that two of the most commonly used star formation tracers give star formation rates with uncertainties up to a factor of 2-3. The high dispersion is due to the presence of AGN, where the UV and the Halpha emission can be contaminated by nuclear activity, highly inclined galaxies, for which the applied extinction corrections are probably inaccurate, or starburst galaxies, where the stationarity in the star formation history required for transforming Halpha and UV luminosities into star formation rates is not satisfied. Excluding these objects we reach an uncertainty of ~50% on the SFR. The Halpha to FUV flux ratio increases with their total stellar mass. If limited to normal star forming galaxies, however, this relationship reduces to a weak trend that might be totally removed using different extinction correction recipes. In these objects the Halpha to FUV flux ratio seems also barely related with the FUV-H colour, the H band effective surface brightness, the total star formation activity and the gas fraction. The data are consistent with a Kroupa and Salpeter initial mass function in the high mass stellar range and imply, for a Salpeter IMF, that the variations of the slope cannot exceed 0.25, from g=2.35 for massive galaxies to g=2.60 in low luminosity systems. We show however that these observed trends, if real, can be due to the different micro history of star formation in massive galaxies with respect to dwarf.

(Abridged) We investigate the properties of galaxies between the blue and the red sequence (i.e., the transition region) by combining UV and NIR imaging to HI line observations for a volume-limited sample of nearby galaxies. We confirm the existence of a tight relation between colour and HI-fraction across all the range of colours, although outside the blue cloud this trend becomes gradually weaker. Transition galaxies are divided into two different families, according to their atomic hydrogen content. HI-deficient galaxies are the majority of transition galaxies in our sample. They are found in high density environments and all their properties are consistent with a quenching of the star formation via gas strip**. However, while the migration from the blue cloud is relatively quick (i.e., <=1 Gyr), a longer amount of time (a few Gyr at least) seems required to completely suppress the star formation and reach the red sequence. At all masses, migrating HI-deficient galaxies are mainly disks, implying that the mechanism responsible for today's migration in clusters cannot have played a significant role in the creation of the red sequence at high-redshift. Conversely, HI-normal transition galaxies are a more heterogeneous population. A fraction of these objects show evidence for accretion/minor-merging events suggesting that at least part of the HI reservoir has an external origin. The detailed evolution of such systems is still unclear, but our analysis suggests that some galaxies might have migrated back from the red sequence after accretion events. Our study clearly shows the variety of evolutionary paths leading to the transition region and suggests that the transition galaxies may not be always associated with systems quickly migrating from the blue to the red sequence.

Although our analysis confirms that, in the transition region between the two sequences, a high fraction of spirals host active galactic nuclei (AGN), it clearly shows that late-types with quenched star formation are mainly HI deficient galaxies preferentially found in the Virgo cluster. This not only suggests that environmental effects could play a significant role in driving the migration of local galaxies from the blue sequence, but it also implies that a physical link between AGN feedback and quenching may not be assumed from a correlation between nuclear activity and colour.

Galaxies are complex systems the evolution of which apparently results from the interplay of dynamics, star formation, chemical enrichment, and feedback from supernova explosions and supermassive black holes. The hierarchical theory of galaxy formation holds that galaxies are assembled from smaller pieces, through numerous mergers of cold dark matter. The properties of an individual galaxy should be controlled by six independent parameters including mass, angular-momentum, baryon-fraction, age and size, as well as by the accidents of its recent haphazard merger history. Here we report that a sample of galaxies that were first detected through their neutral hydrogen radio-frequency emission, and are thus free of optical selection effects, shows five independent correlations among six independent observables, despite having a wide range of properties. This implies that the structure of these galaxies must be controlled by a single parameter, although we cannot identify this parameter from our dataset. Such a degree of organisation appears to be at odds with hierarchical galaxy formation, a central tenet of the cold dark matter paradigm in cosmology.

We have used the Parkes Multibeam system and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to assemble a sample of 195 galaxies selected originally from their HI signature to avoid biases against unevolved or low surface brightness objects. For each source 9 intrinsic properties are measured homogeneously, as well as inclination and an optical spectrum. The sample, which should be almost entirely free of either misidentification or confusion, includes a wide diversity of galaxies ranging from inchoate, low surface brightness dwarfs to giant spirals. Despite this diversity there are 5 clear correlations among their properties. They include a common dynamical mass-to-light ratio within their optical radii, a correlation between surface-brightness and Luminosity and a common HI surface-density. Such correlation should provide strong constrains on models of galaxy formation and evolution.

The UV luminosity function and star formation rate of the Coma cluster

We present estimates of the GALEX NUV and FUV luminosity functions (LFs) of the Coma cluster, over a total area of ~9 deg^2 (~25 Mpc^2), i.e. from the cluster center to the virial radius. Our analysis represents the widest and deepest UV investigation of a nearby cluster of galaxies made to date. The Coma UV LFs show a faint-end slope steeper than the one observed in the local field. This difference, more evident in NUV, is entirely due to the contribution of massive quiescent systems (e.g. ellipticals, lenticulars and passive spirals), more frequent in high density environments. On the contrary, the shape of the UV LFs for Coma star-forming galaxies does not appear to be significantly different from that of the field, consistently with previous studies of local and high redshift clusters. We demonstrate that such similarity is only a selection effect, not providing any information on the role of the environment on the star formation history of cluster galaxies. By integrating the UV LFs for star-forming galaxies (corrected for the first time for internal dust attenuation), we show that the specific star formation rate of Coma is significantly lower than the integrated SSFR of the field and that Coma-like clusters contribute only <7% of the total SFR density of the local universe. Approximately 2/3 of the whole star-formation in Coma is occurring in galaxies with M_star < 10^10 M_sol. The vast majority of star-forming galaxies has likely just started its first dive into the cluster core and has not yet been affected by the cluster environment. The total stellar mass accretion rate of Coma is ~(0.6-1.8) x 10^12 M_sol Gyr^-1, suggesting that a significant fraction of the population of lenticular and passive spirals observed today in Coma could originate from infalling galaxies accreted between z~1 and z~0.

The present work is aimed at studying the distribution of galaxies of different types and luminosities along different structural scaling relations to see whether massive and dwarf ellipticals have been shaped by the same formation process. This exercise is here done by comparing the distribution of Virgo cluster massive and dwarf ellipticals and star forming galaxies along the B band effective surface brightness and effective radius vs. absolute magnitude relations and the Kormendy relation to the predictions of models tracing the effects of ram-pressure strip** on disc galaxies entering the cluster environment and galaxy harassment. Dwarf ellipticals might have been formed from low luminosity, late-type spirals that recently entered into the cluster and lost their gas because of a ram-pressure strip** event, stop** their activity of star formation. The perturbations induced by the abrupt decrease of the star formation activity are sufficient to modify the structural properties of disc galaxies into those of dwarf ellipticals. Galaxy harassment induce a truncation of the disc and generally an increase of the effective surface brightness of the perturbed galaxies. The lack of dynamical simulations of perturbed galaxies spanning a wide range in luminosity prevents us to drive any firm conclusion on a possible harassment-induced origin of the low surface brightness dwarf elliptical galaxy population inhabiting the Virgo cluster. By combining HI, UV and optical observations of the Coma-Abell1367 supercluster we are able to identify galaxies at different stages of their evolution: from healthy star-forming galaxies, to blue HI-poor spirals and transition objects. Our analysis shows that galaxies in the transition region are likely to be the progeny of healthy spirals, whose star-formation has been quenched by the harsh cluster environment. This result suggests that, at least in clusters of galaxies, the migration of galaxies from the blue to the red sequence might be due to environmental processes.

Our analysis confirms that the TIR/UV vs. A(UV) relation varies significantly with the age of the underlying stellar population: i.e. for the same TIR/UV ratio, systems with low specific star formation rate (SSFR) suffer a lower UV attenuation than starbursts. Using a sample of nearby field and cluster spiral galaxies we show that the use of a standard (i.e. age independent) TIR/UV vs. A(UV) relation leads to a systematic overestimate up to 2 magnitudes of the amount of UV dust attenuation suffered by objects with low SSFR and in particular HI-deficient star forming cluster galaxies. This result points out that the age independent $TIR/UV$ vs. $A(UV)$ relation cannot be used to study the UV properties of large samples of galaxies including low star-forming systems and passive spirals. Therefore we give some simple empirical relations from which the UV attenuation can be estimated taking into account its dependence on the age of the stellar populations, providing a less biased view of UV properties of galaxies.

We study the evolution of dwarf (L_H < 10^{9.6} L_Ho) star forming and quiescent galaxies in the Virgo cluster by comparing their UV to radio centimetric properties to the predictions of multizone chemo-spectrophotometric models of galaxy evolution especially tuned to take into account the perturbations induced by the interaction with the cluster intergalactic medium. Our models simulate one or multiple ram pressure strip** events and galaxy starvation. Models predict that all star forming dwarf galaxies entering the cluster for the first time loose most, if not all, of their atomic gas content, quenching on short time scales (< 150 Myr) their activity of star formation. These dwarf galaxies soon become red and quiescent, gas metal-rich objects with spectrophotometric and structural properties similar to those of dwarf ellipticals. Young, low luminosity, high surface brightness star forming galaxies such as late-type spirals and BCDs are probably the progenitors of relatively massive dwarf ellipticals, while it is likely that low surface brightness magellanic irregulars evolve into very low surface brightness quiescent objects hardly detectable in ground based imaging surveys. The small number of dwarf galaxies with physical properties intermediate between those of star forming and quiescent systems is consistent with a rapid (< 1 Gyr) transitional phase between the two dwarf galaxies populations. These results, combined with statistical considerations, are consistent with the idea that most of the dwarf ellipticals dominating the faint end of the Virgo luminosity function were initially star forming systems, accreted by the cluster and stripped of their gas by one or subsequent ram pressure strip** events.

We present 21 cm HI line observations of 5x1 square degrees centered on the local Abell cluster 1367 obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. One hundred sources are detected (79 new HI measurements and 50 new redshifts), more than half belonging to the cluster core and its infalling region. Combining the HI data with SDSS optical imaging we show that our HI selected sample follows scaling relations similar to the ones usually observed in optically selected samples. Interestingly all galaxies in our sample appear to have nearly the same baryon fraction independently of their size, surface brightness and luminosity. The most striking difference between HI and optically selected samples resides in their large scale distribution: whereas optical and X-ray observations trace the cluster core very well, in HI there is almost no evidence of the presence of the cluster. Some implications on the determination of the cluster luminosity function and HI distribution for samples selected at different wavelength are also discussed.

The first spectroscopic census of AGNs associated to late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster is carried on by observing 213 out of a complete set of 237 galaxies more massive than M_dyn>10^{8.5} solar masses. Among them, 77 are classified as AGNs (including 21 transition objects, 47 LINERs and 9 Seyferts), and comprize 32% of the late-type galaxies in Virgo. Due to spectroscopic incompleteness at most 21 AGNs are missed in the survey, so that the fraction would increase up to 41%. Using corollary Near-IR observations, that enable us to estimate galaxies dynamical masses, it is found that AGNs are hosted exclusively in massive galaxies, i.e. M_dyn\gsim 10^{10} solar masses. Their frequency increases steeply with the dynamical mass from zero at M_dyn\approx10^{9.5} solar masses to virtually 1 at M_dyn>10^{11.5} solar masses. These frequencies are consistent with the ones of low luminosity AGNs found in the general field by the SDSS. Massive galaxies that harbor AGNs commonly show conspicuous r-band star-like nuclear enhancements. Conversely they often, but not necessarily contain massive bulges. Few well known AGNs (e.g. M61, M100, NGC4535) are found in massive Sc galaxies with little or no bulge. The AGN fraction seems to be only marginally sensitive to galaxy environment. We infer the black hole masses using the known scaling relations of quiescent black holes. No black holes lighter than $\sim 10^6$ \msol are found active in our sample.

Hubble Space Telescope images show extraordinary trails composed of bright blue knots (-16.5<M<-11.5 mag) and stellar streams associated with each of these systems. Combining optical, near and mid-infrared and radio observations we prove that while both galaxies show similar extended trails of star-forming knots, their recent star formation histories are different. One (~L*) is experiencing a strong burst of star formation, appearing as a rare example of a luminous infrared cluster galaxy. In comparison, the other (~ 0.1 L*) has recently ceased its star formation activity. Our model suggests that the morphologies and star formation in these galaxies have been influenced by the combined action of tidal interaction (likely with the cluster potential) and of ram pressure with the intracluster medium. These results can be used to gain more insights to the origin of S0s, dwarf and ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) cluster galaxies.

For a sample of 43 nearby, late-type galaxies, we have investigated the radial variation of both the current star formation rate and the dust-induced UV light attenuation. To do this we have cross-correlated IRAS images and GALEX observations for each of these galaxies, and compiled observations of the gas (CO and HI) and metal-abundance gradients found in the literature. We find that attenuation correlates with metallicity. We then use the UV profiles, corrected for attenuation, to study several variants of the Schmidt law and conclude that our results are compatible with a simple law similar to the one of Kennicutt but extending smoothly to lower surface densities, but with considerable scatter. We do not detect an abrupt break in the UV light at the threshold radius derived from H-alpha data (at which the H-alpha profile shows a break and beyond which only a few HII regions are usually found). We interpret the H-alpha sudden break not as a change in the star formation regime (as often suggested) but as the vanishingly small number of ionizing stars corresponding to low levels of star formation.

We present a new method for studying the star formation history of late-type, cluster galaxies undergoing gas starvation or a ram-pressure strip** event by combining bidimensional multifrequency observations with multi-zones models of galactic chemical and spectrophotometricevolution. This method is applied to the Virgo cluster anemic galaxy NGC 4569. We extract radial profiles from recently obtained UV GALEX images at 1530 and 2310 A, from visible and near-IR narrow (Halpha) and broad band images at different wavelengths (u, B, g, V, r, i, z, J, H, K), from Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images and from atomic and molecular gas maps. The model in the absence of interaction (characterized by its rotation velocity and spin parameter) is constrained by the unperturbed H band light profile and by the Halpha rotation curve. We can reconstruct the observed total-gas radial-density profile and the light surface-brightness profiles at all wavelengths in a ram-pressure strip** scenario by making simple assumptions about the gas removal process and the orbit of NGC 4569 inside the cluster. The observed profiles cannot be reproduced by simply stop** gas infall, thus mimicing starvation. Gas removal is required, which is more efficient in the outer disk, inducing a radial quenching in the star formation activity, as observed and reproduced by the model. This observational result, consistent with theoretical predictions that a galaxy-cluster IGM interaction is able to modify structural disk parameters without gravitational perturbations, is discussed in the framework of the origin of lenticulars in clusters.

The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) is one of several HI surveys utilising the new Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) fitted to the 305m radio telescope at Arecibo. The survey is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments to higher sensitivity, higher velocity resolution and higher spatial resolution than previous fully sampled, 21 cm multibeam surveys. The emphasis is on making detailed observations of nearby objects although the large system bandwidth (100 MHz) will allow us to quantify the HI properties over a large instantaneous velocity range.
In this paper we describe the survey and its goals and present the results from the precursor observations of a 5 degree x 1 degree region containing the nearby (~10 Mpc) NGC 628 group. We have detected all the group galaxies in the region including the low mass (M{HI}~10^7Mo) dwarf, dw0137+1541 (Briggs, 1986). The fluxes and velocities for these galaxies compare well with previously published data. There is no intra-group neutral gas detected down to a limiting column density of 2x10^{18}cm^{-2}. In addition to the group galaxies we have detected 22 galaxies beyond the NGC 628 group, 9 of which are previously uncatalogued.(Abridged)

We present a multiwavelength analysis of a compact group of galaxies infalling at high speed into the dynamically young cluster Abell 1367. Peculiar morphologies and unusually high Halpha emission are associated with two giant galaxies and at least ten dwarfs/extragalactic HII regions, making this group the region with the highest density of star formation activity ever observed in the local clusters. Moreover Halpha imaging observations reveal extraordinary complex trails of ionized gas behind the galaxies, with projected lengths exceeding 150 kpc. These unique cometary trails mark the gaseous trajectory of galaxies, witnessing their dive into the hot cluster intergalactic medium. Under the combined action of tidal forces among group members and the ram-pressure by the cluster ambient medium, the group galaxies were fragmented and the ionized gas was blown out. The properties of this group suggest that environmental effects within infalling groups may have represented a preprocessing step of the galaxy evolution during the high redshift cluster assembly phase.

Taking advantage of the completeness of the data set, the dependence of Halpha properties on the Hubble type was determined for late-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster. Differences in the gaseous content partly account for the large scatter of the Halpha E.W. within each Hubble-type class. We studied the radial distributions of the Halpha E.W. around Coma+A1367 and the Virgo clusters in two luminosity bins. Luminous galaxies show a decrease in their average Halpha E.W. in the inner 1 virial radius, while low-luminosity galaxies do not show this trend.

We analyze the dust attenuation properties of a volume-limited, optically-selected sample of normal star forming galaxies in nearby clusters as observed by GALEX. The internal attenuation is estimated using three independent indicators, namely: the ratio of the total infrared to far-ultraviolet emission, the ultraviolet spectral slope beta and the Balmer decrement. We confirm that normal galaxies follow a L_TIR/L_FUV-beta relation offset from the one observed for starburst galaxies. This offset is found to weakly correlate with the birthrate parameter, thus with the galaxy star formation history. We study the correlations of dust attenuation with other global properties, such as the metallicity, dynamical mass, ionized gas attenuation, Halpha emission and mass surface density. Metal-rich, massive galaxies are, as expected, more heavily extinguished in the UV than are small systems. For the same gas metallicity normal galaxies have lower L_TIR/L_FUV ratio than starbursts, in agreement with the difference observed in the L_TIR/L_FUV-beta relation. Unexpectedly we find however that normal star forming galaxies follow exactly the same relationship between metallicity and ultraviolet spectral slope beta determined for starbursts, complicating our understanding of dust properties. This result might indicate a different dust geometry between normal galaxies and starbursts, but it could also be due to aperture effects eventually present in the IUE starbursts dataset. The present multiwavelength study allows us to provide some empirical relations from which the total infrared to far ultraviolet ratio (L_TIR/L_FUV) can be estimated when far infrared data are absent.

Chandra images of the elliptical galaxy NGC4261 have revealed an anisotropy in the spatial distribution of the off-nuclear X-ray sources, interpreted by Zezas et al. as evidence of an association with a young stellar population. Our independent analysis of archive X-ray (Chandra) and optical (INT and HST) observations confirms the anisotropy of the X-ray sources but conducts to a different interpretation for their origin. We find that nearly half of the X-ray sources are associated to a globular cluster (optical counterpart) suggesting that they are accreting low-mass X-ray binaries. Where color index information is available, the X-ray sources are found to reside in red (metal-rich) systems. The luminosity function of the X-ray sources is also consistent with the one drawn from a population of Low Mass X-ray Binaries. We further investigate the properties of the sample of point-like sources obtained from archival optical images that we suggest are good globular cluster candidates and for which we find that the projected spatial distribution is non-homogeneous. In addition, we show that the distributions of the optical and X-ray populations are very similar, which leads us to conclude that the spatial anisotropy of the X-ray sources in NGC4261 is mostly a reflection of the anisotropy of the globular cluster population.

We study the UV properties of a volume limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Virgo cluster combining new GALEX far- (1530 A) and near-ultraviolet (2310 A) data with spectro-photometric data available at other wavelengths. The sample includes 264 ellipticals, lenticulars and dwarfs spanning a large range in luminosity (M(B)<-15). While the NUV to optical or near-IR color magnitude relations (CMR) are similar to those observed at optical wavelengths, with a monotonic reddening of the color index with increasing luminosity, the (FUV-V) and (FUV-H) CMRs show a discontinuity between massive and dwarf objects. An even more pronounced dichotomy is observed in the (FUV-NUV) CMR. For ellipticals the (FUV-NUV) color becomes bluer with increasing luminosity and with increasing reddening of the optical or near-IR color indices. For the dwarfs the opposite trend is observed. These observational evidences are consistent with the idea that the UV emission is dominated by hot, evolved stars in giant systems, while in dwarf ellipticals residual star formation activity is more common.

Using spectro-photometric optical data we select out star-forming systems from quiescent galaxies and study their separate contributions to the cluster luminosity function. We find that the UV luminosity function of cluster star-forming galaxies is consistent with the field. The difference between the cluster and field LF is entirely due to the contribution at low luminosities (M_AB >-16 mag) of non star-forming, early-type galaxies that are significantly over dense in clusters.

We present GALEX NUV (2310 A) and FUV (1530 A) images of the interacting galaxy NGC 4438 (Arp 120) in the center of the Virgo cluster. These images show an extended (20 kpc) tidal tail at the north-west edge of the galaxy previously undetected at other wavelengths, at 15-25 kpc from its nucleus. Except in the nucleus, the UV morphology of NGC 4438 is totally different from the Halpha+[NII] one, more similar to the X-ray emission, confirming its gas cooling origin. We study the star formation history of NGC 4438 combining spectro-photometric data in the UV-visible-near-IR wavelength range with population synthesis and galaxy evolution models. The data are consistent with a recent (~ 10 Myr), instantaneous burst of star formation in the newly discovered UV north-western tail which is significantly younger than the age of the tidal interaction with NGC 4435, dated by dynamical models at ~ 100 Myr ago. Recent star formation events are also present at the edge of the northern arm and in the southern tail, while totally lacking in the other regions, which are dominated by the old stellar population perturbed during the dynamical interaction with NGC 4435. The contribution of this recent starburst to the total galaxy stellar mass is lower than 0.1%, an extremely low value for such a violent interaction. High-velocity, off-center tidal encounters such as that observed in Arp 120 are thus not sufficient to significantly increase the star formation activity of cluster galaxies.

We present a dynamical analysis of the central ~1.3 square degrees of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1367, based on 273 redshift measurements (of which 119 are news). From the analysis of the 146 confirmed cluster members we derive a significantly non-Gaussian velocity distribution, with a mean location C_{BI} = 6484+/-81 km/s and a scale S_{BI} = 891+/-58 km/s. The cluster appears elongated from the North-West to the South-East with two main density peaks associated with two substructures. The North-West subcluster is probably in the early phase of merging into the South-East substructure (~ 0.2 Gyr before core crossing). A dynamical study of the two subclouds points out the existence of a group of star-forming galaxies infalling into the core of the South-East subcloud and suggests that two other groups are infalling into the NW and SE subclusters respectively. These three subgroups contain a higher fraction of star-forming galaxies than the cluster core, as expected during merging events. Abell 1367 appears as a young cluster currently forming at the intersection of two filaments.

This point-like source has a recessional velocity of ~ 200 km/s, and is associated with the giant galaxy VCC873 (NGC 4402). It has a higher luminosity, star formation rate and metallicity than the extragalactic HII region recently discovered near the Virgo galaxy VCC836 by Gerhard et al. (2002).

Two giant and ten dwarf/HII galaxies, members to a group, are simultaneously undergoing a burst of star formation. Redshift measurements suggest that the group galaxies are in the process of falling into the cluster at very high speed. We explore two possible mechanisms that could have triggered the short-lived stellar burst we are witnessing: the first, internal to the group itself, via tidal interactions among its members, the hypothesis favoured by Sakai et al. (2002); the second associated with the high velocity infall of the group galaxies into the cluster intergalactic medium. We present evidences in favour and against the two hypotheses.

Optical spectroscopy of 93 galaxies, 60 projected in the direction of Abell 1367, 21 onto the Coma cluster and 12 on Virgo, is reported. The targets were selected either because they were detected in previous Hα, UV or r' surveys. The present observations bring to 100% the redshift completeness of Hαselected galaxies in the Coma region and to 75% in Abell 1367. All observed galaxies except one show Hαemission and belong to the clusters. This confirms previous determinations of the Hαluminosity function of the two clusters that were based on the assumption that all Hαdetected galaxies were cluster members. Using the newly obtained data we re-determine the UV luminosity function of Coma and we compute for the first time the UV luminosity function of A1367. Their faint end slopes remain uncertain (-2.00 < α< -1.35) due to insufficient knowledge of the background counts. If 90% of the UV selected galaxies without redshift will be found in the background (as our survey indicates), the slope of UV luminosity function will be α~ -1.35, in agreement with the UV luminosity function of the field (Sullivan et al. 2000) and with the H$α$ luminosity functions of the two clusters (Iglesias-Paramo et al. 2002). We discover a point like Hαsource in the Virgo cluster, associated with the giant galaxy VCC873, possibly an extragalactic HII region similar to the one recently observed in Virgo by Gerhard et al. (2002).

We made a large (approximately 1degr x 1degr) r'-band imaging survey of the central regions of the two nearby clusters of galaxies, Abell1367 and Coma. The data, presented as a catalog, are used to construct the r'-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in these two clusters, by subtracting the Yasuda et al. (2001) galaxy counts from our cluster counts. Our Coma luminosity function is consistent with previous determinations, i.e. providing a faint end slope alpha = -1.47_-0.09^+0.08, significantly steeper than the one we find for Abell1367 (alpha = -1.07_-0.16^+0.20). The counts in Abell1367 show a relative minimum at r' ~ 19, followed by a steep increase faintward. The difference between the two clusters appears significant, given the consistency of the experimental conditions in the two clusters. Whereas for Coma we find a significant increase of the slope of the LF outwards, no such effect is found for Abell1367.

We present a deep wide field Halpha imaging survey of the central regions of the two nearby clusters of galaxies Coma and Abell1367, taken with the WFC at the INT2.5m telescope. We determine for the first time the Schechter parameters of the Halpha luminosity function (LF) of cluster galaxies. The Halpha LFs of Abell1367 and Coma are compared with each other and with that of Virgo, estimated using the B band LF by Sandage et al. (1985) and a L(Halpha) vs M_B relation. Typical parameters of phi^* ~ 10^0.00+-0.07 Mpc^-3, L^* ~ 10^41.25+- 0.05 erg sec^-1 and alpha ~ -0.70+-0.10 are found for the three clusters. The best fitting parameters of the cluster LFs differ from those found for field galaxies, showing flatter slopes and lower scaling luminosities L^*. Since, however, our Halpha survey is significantly deeper than those of field galaxies, this result must be confirmed on similarly deep measurements of field galaxies. By computing the total SFR per unit volume of cluster galaxies, and taking into account the cluster density in the local Universe, we estimate that the contribution of clusters like Coma and Abell1367 is approximately 0.25% of the SFR per unit volume of the local Universe.
