While Microservices are a preferred choice for modern cloud-based applications, the migration and architectural refactoring of existing legacy systems is still a major challenge in industry. To address this, academia has proposed many strategies and approaches that aim to automate the process of decomposing a monolith into functional units. In this study, we review existing migration approaches regarding techniques used and tool support. From 91 publications, we extracted 22 tools, 7 of which address service decomposition. To assess them from an end-user perspective, we investigated their underlying techniques, installation, documentation, usability and support. For 5 of them, we generated service cuts using reference applications. The results of our preliminary work suggest that the inspected tools pursue promising concepts, but lack maturity and generalizability for reliable use by industry.

The residential sector is responsible for approximately 20 percent of the world's energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. In order to improve this reality, it is essential to help and support the leading actor in this scene, the homeowner. In general, buildings are complex objects as each home may have very particular parameters: different materials (windows, walls, types of roofs, etc.), uses, and habits. No two cases are identical. In this paper, we addressed this problem by proposing a method to obtain estimates of energy and carbon savings resulting from a class of retrofit projects and housing profiles. We applied our formulas to conduct a case study of the London residential sector, supported by the publicly available Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) dataset. As a result of a multi-project renovation of a house, including loft insulation, double-glazed windows, and energy-efficient lighting (LED), we found that the average family in the Greater London area could save approximately 9 MWh in energy consumption, 1,700 kgCO$_2$ in carbon emissions and more than GBP 800 on the energy bills, over a year, in contrast to a cost of around GBP 9,000 (or a return on investment of 11 years). In another example, applying the method to calculate what is needed to install heat pumps in each house in London, a total of GBP 16.9 billion would be spent, leading to savings of GBP 450 million per year (return on investment of 37 years). Finally, an overall upgrade to loft insulation would cost London households GBP 1.4 billion, generating GBP 290 million in annual savings (a 5-year return on investment).

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

Adopting DevOps practices is nowadays a recurring task in the industry. DevOps is a set of practices intended to reduce the friction between the software development (Dev) and the IT operations (Ops), resulting in higher quality software and a shorter development lifecycle. Even though many resources are talking about DevOps practices, they are often inconsistent with each other on the best DevOps practices. Furthermore, they lack the needed detail and structure for beginners to the DevOps field to quickly understand them.
In order to tackle this issue, this paper proposes four foundational DevOps patterns: Version Control Everything, Continuous Integration, Deployment Automation, and Monitoring. The patterns are both detailed enough and structured to be easily reused by practitioners and flexible enough to accommodate different needs and quirks that might arise from their actual usage context. Furthermore, the patterns are tuned to the DevOps principle of Continuous Improvement by containing metrics so that practitioners can improve their pattern implementations.

Context: Container orchestration tools supporting infrastructure-as-code allow new forms of collaboration between developers and operatives. Still, their text-based nature permits naive mistakes and is more difficult to read as complexity increases. We can find few examples of low-code approaches for defining the orchestration of containers, and there seems to be a lack of empirical studies showing the benefits and limitations of such approaches. Goal & method: We hypothesize that a complete visual notation for Docker-based orchestrations could reduce the effort, the error rate, and the development time. Therefore, we developed a tool featuring such a visual notation for Docker Compose configurations, and we empirically evaluated it in a controlled experiment with novice developers. Results: The results show a significant reduction in development time and error-proneness when defining Docker Compose files, supporting our hypothesis. The participants also thought the prototype easier to use and useful, and wanted to use it in the future.

Chaos enables the emergence of randomness in deterministic physical systems. Therefore it can be exploited for the conception of true random number generators (RNG) mandatory in classical cryptography applications. Meanwhile, nanomechanical oscillators, at the core of many on-board functionalities such as sensing, reveal as excellent candidates to behave chaotically. This is made possible thanks to intrinsic mechanical nonlinearities emerging at the nanoscale. Here we present a platform gathering a nanomechanical oscillator and its integrated capacitive actuation. Using a modulation of the resonant force induced by the electrodes, we demonstrate chaotic dynamics and study how it depends on the dissipation of the system. The randomness of a binary sequence generated from a chaotic time trace is evaluated and discussed such that the generic parameters enabling successful random number generation can be established. This demonstration makes use of concepts which are sufficiently general to be applied to the next generation of nano-electro-optomechanical systems.

Documenting frameworks provides its users and maintainers useful information on that software's architecture, design, and customization. Despite documentation's importance, the process of creating and maintaining it is considered to imply considerable effort, to be tedious, and expensive.
In this work, we mine patterns from open source frameworks to uncover good solutions used to document them that had not yet been described as patterns. This process resulted in four new patterns.
"Contribution Guidelines" helps developers to become contributors to a project, hel** them follow the good practices that have been adopted by its maintainers. "Documentation Versioning" consists of having separate documentation for older versions of the framework, to answer needs of the users on such versions. "Migration Handbook" helps users migrating from previous versions of the framework to newer ones. "Multi-language Support" allows translated documents in several languages to support a wider range of users for the framework.

Software analytics is a data-driven approach to decision making, which allows software practitioners to leverage valuable insights from data about software to achieve higher development process productivity and improve different aspects of software quality. In previous work, a set of patterns for adopting a lean software analytics process was identified through a literature review. This paper presents two patterns to add to the original set, forming a pattern language for adopting software analytics practices that aims to inform decision-making activities of software practitioners. The writing of these two patterns was informed by the solutions employed in the context of two case studies on software analytics practices, and the patterns were further validated by searching for their occurrence in the literature. The pattern Broad-Spectrum Diagnostic proposes to conduct more broad analysis based on common metrics when the team does not have the expertise to understand the kind of problems that software analytics can help to solve; and the pattern Embedded Improvements suggests adding improvement tasks as part of other routine activities.

The promise of increased agility, autonomy, scalability, and reusability has made the microservices architecture a \textit{de facto} standard for the development of large-scale and cloud-native commercial applications. Software patterns are an important design tool, and often they are selected and combined with the goal of obtaining a set of desired quality attributes. However, from a research standpoint, many patterns have not been widely validated against industry practice, making them not much more than interesting theories. To address this, we investigated how practitioners perceive the impact of 14 patterns on 7 quality attributes. Hence, we conducted 9 semi-structured interviews to collect industry expertise regarding (1) knowledge and adoption of software patterns, (2) the perceived architectural trade-offs of patterns, and (3) metrics professionals use to measure quality attributes. We found that many of the trade-offs reported in our study matched the documentation of each respective pattern, and identified several gains and pains which have not yet been reported, leading to novel insight about microservice patterns.

Data privacy is a trending topic in the internet era. Given such importance, many challenges emerged in order to collect, manage, process, and publish data. In this sense, personal data have got attention, and many regulations emerged, such as GDPR in the European Union and LGPD in Brazil. This regulation model aims to protect users' data from misusage and leakage and allow users to request an explanation from companies when needed. In pandemic situations, such as the COVID-19 and Ebola outbreak, the action related to sharing health data between different organizations is/ was crucial to develop a significant movement to avoid the massive infection and decrease the number of deaths. However, the data subject, i.e., the users, should have the right to request the purpose of data use, anonymization, and data deletion. In this sense, permissioned blockchain technology emerges to empower users to get their rights providing data ownership, transparency, and security through an immutable, unified, and distributed database ruled by smart contracts. The governance model discussed in blockchain applications is usually regarding the first layer governance, i.e., public and permissioned models. However, this discussion is too superficial, and they do not cover compliance with the data regulations. Therefore, in order to organize the relationship between data owners and the stakeholders, i.e., companies and governmental entities, we developed a second layer data governance model for permissioned blockchains based on the Governance Analytical Framework principles applied in pandemic situations preserving the users' privacy and their duties. From the law perspective, we based our model on the UE GDPR in regard to data privacy concerns.

A number of approaches have been proposed to identify service boundaries when decomposing a monolith to microservices. However, only a few use systematic methods and have been demonstrated with replicable empirical studies.
We describe a systematic approach for refactoring systems to microservice architectures that uses static analysis to determine the system's structure and dynamic analysis to understand its actual behavior. A prototype of a tool was built using this approach (MonoBreaker) and was used to conduct a case study on a real-world software project.
The goal was to assess the feasibility and benefits of a systematic approach to decomposition that combines static and dynamic analysis. The three study participants regarded as positive the decomposition proposed by our tool, and considered that it showed improvements over approaches that rely only on static analysis.

Synchronization and chaos are two well known and ubiquitous phenomena in nature. Interestingly, under specific conditions, coupled chaotic systems can display synchronization in some of their observables. Here, we experimentally investigate bichromatic synchronization on the route to chaos of two non-identical mechanically coupled optomechanical nanocavities. Electromechanical near-resonant excitation of one of the resonators evidences hysteretic behaviors of the coupled mechanical modes which can, under amplitude modulation, reach the chaotic regime. The observations, allowing to measure directly the full phase space of the system, are accurately modeled by coupled periodically forced Duffing resonators thanks to a complete calibration of the experimental parameters. This shows that, besides chaos transfer from the mechanical to the optical frequency domain, spatial chaos transfer between the two nonidentical subsystems occurs. Upon simultaneous excitations of the coupled membranes modes, we also demonstrate bichromatic chaos synchronization between quadratures at the two distinct carrier frequencies of the normal modes. Their respective quadrature amplitudes are consistently synchronized thanks to the modal orthogonality breaking induced by the nonlinearity.
Meanwhile, their phases show complex dynamics with imperfect synchronization in the chaotic regime. Our generic model agrees again quantitatively with the observed synchronization dynamics. These results set the ground for the experimental study of yet unexplored collective dynamics of e.g synchronization in arrays of strongly coupled, nanoscale nonlinear oscillators for applications ranging from precise measurements to multispectral chaotic encryption and random bit generation, and to analog computing, to mention a few.

We consider experimental constraints in the MeV region in order to determine the parameter space for the $U(1)_X$ extension of the Standard Model, presented in the first part of our work. In particular, we focus on the model UV-completed by cold WIMPs. We conclude that the electron anomalous magnetic moment, the neutrino trident production and the relic abundance $Ω_{CDM}$ provide the most stringent bounds and, in particular cases, they are sufficient to exclude dark-photon ($A'$) models. By allowing the axial-vector coupling of the dark gauge boson $Z'$, the interference effect with the SM gauge bosons may reduce the bounds coming from the trident neutrino production. At the same time, such coupling allows a region of the parameter space already favored both by the relic abundance and by the discrepancy between experimental result and theoretical prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We emphasize that light-$Z'$ interactions, non-universal for the two first lepton families, necessarily create a difference in the proton charge radius measured in the Lamb shift of the $e$-hydrogen and $μ$-hydrogen. Finally, we determine the effects of the new gauge boson on the forward-backward asymmetry in $e^+ e^- \rightarrow \bar{f} f$, $f = μ, τ$, and on the leptonic decays $M \rightarrow j ν_j l^+ l^-$, where $M = π, K, D, D_s, B$ and $j,l = e, μ$.

We examine theoretical features of $U(1)_X$ extensions of the Standard Model whose quantum anomalies are canceled per generation. Similarly to other versions, the theory consists of a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model plus a scalar singlet embedded into the $SM \otimes U(1)_X$ gauge group, and introduces small modifications to the $Z$-boson interactions. These changes can be minimized by exclusively charging right-handed fermions under the new Abelian symmetry, and are compensated by the neutral $X$-boson exchange. Non-universality of fermion couplings can also be achieved by requiring one single $X$-charged family. In general, $X$ gauge bosons can be separated into $A'$ (dark photons) and $Z'$ subsets, distinguished by the presence of axial-vector currents. $A'$ physics is commonly simpler to constrain and therefore favored by experimental tests. Finally, the model can be UV completed both by stable $χ$ fermions or by right-handed neutrinos. The prior case may provide cold WIMPs in the theory.

To find how distributed ledgers solve existing problems, this study looks for blockchain frameworks in the academic world. Identifying the existing frameworks can demonstrate where the interest in the technology exists and where it can be miss-ing. This study encountered several blockchain frameworks in development. However, there are few references to operational needs, testing, and deploy of the technology. With the widespread use of the technology, either integrating with pre-existing solutions, replacing legacy systems, or new implementations, the need for testing, deploying, exploration, and maintenance is expected to in-tensify.

The work is a brief review of the theory based on the $SU(3)_c \otimes SU(3)_L \otimes U(1)_X$ gauge group in the presence of Heavy Leptons. Recent analysis have established a set of four possible variants for the 3-3-1HL, whose content arises according to the so-denoted variable $β$. Since it has been argued about the presence of stable charged particles in this sort of models, we divide the different sectors of the Lagrangian between universal and specific vertices, and conclude that the omission of $β$-dependent terms in the potential may induce to a discrete symmetry for the versions defined by $|β|=\sqrt{3}$. In the context of $|β|=\frac{1}{\sqrt{3}}$, where the new degrees of freedom have the same standard electric charges, additional Yukawa interactions may create decay channels into the SM sector. Furthermore, we introduce a method of diagonalization by parts in the Scalar sector motivated by a general consequence of the Goldstone theorem. In summary, we develop the most complete set of terms allowed by the symmetry group and resolve their definitive pieces in order to justify the model description present in the literature.

We investigate a spontaneously broken $U(1)_d$ gauge symmetry with a muon-specific dark Higgs. Our first goal is to verify how the presence of a new dark Higgs, $φ$, and a dark gauge boson, $V$, can simultaneously face the anomalies from the muon magnetic moment and the proton charge radius. Secondly, by assuming that $V$ must decay to an electron-positron pair, we explore the corresponding parameter space determined with the low energy constraints coming from $ K \to μX$, electron $(g-2)_e$, $K \to μν_μe^+ e^-$, $K \to μν_μμ^+ μ^-$, $τ\to ν_τμν_μe^+ e^-$. We focus in the scenario where the $V$ mass is below $ \sim 2 m_μ$ and the $φ$ mass runs from few MeV till $250$ MeV, with V-photon mixing of the order $ \sim\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$. Among weak process at low energies, we check the influence of the new light vector on kaon decays as well as on the scattering $e^+ e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- e^+ e^-$ and discuss the impact of the dark Higgs on $e^+ e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^- $. Finally, we consider contributions of the V-photon mixing in the decays $π^0 \to γe^+ e^-$, $η\to γe^+ e^-$, $ρ\to πe^+ e^-$, $K^* \to K e^+ e^-$ and $φ(1020) \to ηe^+ e^-$.

In particular, we include the effects of a real scalar with mass near 125 GeV but with non-diagonal couplings to quarks. We show that, as in the tree level case, there are ranges of the parameters in which these contributions can be enough suppressed by negative interference among several amplitudes. Hence, in this model these $ΔF=2$ processes may be dominated by the standard model contributions. In addition, our results are valid in the minimal 3-3-1 model without the sextet.

Motivated by recent cosmological observations of a possibly unsuppressed primordial tensor component $r$ of inflationary perturbations, we reanalyse in detail the 5D conformal SUGRA originated natural inflation model of Ref. [1]. The model is a supersymmetric variant of 5D extra natural inflation, also based on a shift symmetry, and leads to the potential of natural inflation. Coupling the bulk fields generating the inflaton potential via a gauge coupling to the inflaton with brane SM states we necessarily obtain a very slow gauge inflaton decay rate and a very low reheating temperature $T_r\stackrel{<}{_\sim }{\cal O}(100)$~GeV. Analysis of the required number of e-foldings (from the CMB observations) leads to values of $n_s$ in the lower range of present Planck 2015 results. We are especially focused on what the software developer context encompasses at the project level and how it can be captured. The experimental work done so far show that useful context information can be extracted from project management tools. The extraction, analysis and availability of this context information can be used to enrich the work environment of the developer with additional knowledge to support her/his work.

With this at hand, we can consider compactifications of ten dimensional SO(32) supergravity (arising as the low energy limit of the heterotic string) on the resolved spaces in the presence of non-Abelian bundles. We provide explicit examples in the resolved C^2/Z_3 case, and give a complete classification of all possible effective six dimensional models where the instantons are combined with Abelian gauge fluxes in order to fulfil the local Bianchi identity constraint. We compare these models with the corresponding C^2/Z_3 orbifold models, and find that all of these gauge backgrounds can be related to configurations of vacuum expectation values (VEV's) of twisted and sometimes untwisted states. Gauge groups and spectra are identical from both the orbifold and the smooth bundle perspectives.

We reconsider the ingredients of moduli stabilization in heterotic M-theory. On this line we close a gap in the literature deriving the Kaehler potential dependence on vector bundle moduli and charged matter. Crucial in this derivation is our superspace formulation of 5d heterotic M-theory taking into account the Bianchi identities modified by brane terms. Likewise, we obtain the Fayet-Iliopolous terms due to brane localised anomalous U(1)'s. After assembling perturbative and non-perturbative contributions to the superpotential, we study supersymmetric (adS) vacua. It is found that the susy condition decouples the bundle moduli from the geometric moduli. We show that M-theory supersymmetric vacua without five-branes can be found, albeit not at phenomenologically interesting values of the geometric moduli. This result is fairly independent of the choice of vector bundle at the observable brane.

We construct a class of toric Kahler manifolds, M_4, of real dimension four, a subset of which corresponds to the Kahler bases of all known 5D asymptotically AdS_5 supersymmetric black-holes. In a certain limit, these Kahler spaces take the form of cones over Sasaki spaces, which, in turn, are fibrations over toric manifolds of real dimension two. The metric on M_4 is completely determined by a single function H(x), which is the conformal factor of the two dimensional space. We study the solutions of minimal five dimensional gauged supergravity having this class of Kahler spaces as base and show that in order to generate a five dimensional solution H(x) must obey a simple sixth order differential equation. We discuss the solutions in detail, which include all known asymptotically AdS_5 black holes as well as other spacetimes with non-compact horizons. Moreover we find an infinite number of supersymmetric deformations of these spacetimes with less spatial isometries than the base space. These deformations vanish at the horizon, but become relevant asymptotically.

We present a detailed study of the reduction to 4D of 5D supergravity compactified on the S^1/Z_2 orbifold. For this purpose we develop and employ a recently proposed N=1 conformal superfield description of the 5D supergravity couplings to abelian vector and hypermultiplets. In particular, we obtain a unique relation of the "radion" to chiral superfields as in global 5D SUSY and we can embed the universal hypermultiplet into this formalism. In our approach, it is transparent how the superconformal structure of the effective 4D actions is inherited from the one of the original 5D supergravity. We consider both ungauged and gauged 5D supergravities. This includes compactifications in unwarped geometries, generalizations of the supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum (RS) model as well as 5D heterotic M-theory. In the unwarped case, after obtaining the effective Kaehler potentials and superpotentials, we demonstrate that the tree-level 4D potentials have flat and/or tachyonic directions. One-loop corrections to the Kaehler potential and gaugino condensation are presented as suitable tools for moduli stabilization to be discussed in subsequent work. Turning to the RS-like models, we obtain a master formula for the Kaehler potential for an arbitrary number of vector and hyper moduli, which we evaluate exactly for special cases. Finally, we formulate the superfield description of 5D heterotic M-theory and obtain its effective 4D description for the universal (h^(1,1)=1) case, in the presence of an arbitrary number of bulk 5-branes. We present, as a check of our expressions, time-dependent solutions of 4D heterotic M-theory, which uplift to 5D solutions generalizing the ones recently found in hep-th/0502077.

We use our off shell superfield formulation and give a detailed description of the issue of SUSY breaking by the F-component of the radion superfield. By a suitably gauged U(1)R symmetry and including couplings with compensator supermultiplets and a linear multiplet, we achieve a self consistent radion mediated SUSY breaking of no scale type. The inflaton 1-loop effective potential has attractive features needed for successful inflation. An interesting feature of both presented inflationary scenarios are the red tilted spectra with ns~0.96. For gauge inflation we obtain a significant tensor to scalar ratio r~0.1 of the density perturbations, while for the modulus inflation r is strongly suppressed.

As in the rigid case, the FI terms induce odd masses for charged hypermultiplets, leading to the (de)localisation of the KK wave-functions near the fix-point branes. In the case of ungauged U(1)_R symmetry, we present also supersymmetric warped solutions in the presence of non-trivial profiles of charged hyperscalars.

We propose that the radion chiral supermultiplet of five dimensional compactified supergravity is obtained by reduction of the graviphoton gauge multiplet to N=1 superfields in the off shell 5D superconformal gravity formalism of Fujita, Kugo and Ohashi. We present a superfield Lagrangian of Chern-Simons type (similar to global SUSY), which reproduces all component couplings of gauge fields and the radion. A hypermultiplet superspace action is also proposed which correctly accounts for the coupling of matter multiplets with gauge and radion superfields. 4D supergravity enters by the coupling to the 4D Weyl multiplet, an even orbifold parity multiplet embedded in the 5D Weyl multiplet. We apply this formalism to a discussion of Fayet-Iliopolous terms, and the gauging of orbifold SUGRA to obtain warped solutions.

A one-loop inflaton effective 4D potential is generated, with the inflaton being a 'Wilson-line field'. It relies on a SUSY breaking. We first consider SUSY breaking to occur spontaneously within a 'no-scale' model by a non zero $F$-term of the radion superfield which transmits SUSY breaking into the 'visible' sector. As an alternative, we study $D$-term SUSY breaking originating directly from the 5D gauge supermultiplet. Together with the usual KK resummation method, we present a calculation with the world-line formalism. The latter allows one to get the resulting effective potential directly as a sum over all winding modes. For both presented scenarios, the generated effective potentials have suitable forms for realizing successful inflation, i.e. are flat enough and give the needed number of ${\rm e}$-foldings. In addition, there is a natural way to get strongly suppressed values for the potentials, which then could be associated with dark energy/quintessence.

For a low compactification scale (large radius), there is a significant non universal logarithmic contribution in the relative running of gauge couplings. This within 5D SU(5), with the minimal field content, gives wrong prediction for $\al_3(M_Z)$ unless one goes beyond the minimal setting. The realization of the light precursors' idea thus requires some specific extensions. As a scenario alternative to SU(5) we also consider an SU(6) orbifold GUT, whose minimal non SUSY version gives natural unification. In all the presented unification scenarios with light precursors, various GUT scales are realized. This allows the model to be naturally embedded in either heterotic or Type ${\rm I}$ string theories.

Additional symmetries play a crucial role for the generation of $μ$ and $Bμ$ terms of appropriate values: with a $SU(2)_{cus}$ custodial symmetry the Higgs doublets naturally emerge as massless pseudo-Goldstone bosons in the unbroken SUSY limit. After SUSY breaking they get masses of the order of the weak scale. If instead of $SU(2)_{cus}$ a discrete $Z_5$ symmetry is applied the Higgs doublet's masses are still adequately suppressed, but they are not pseudo-Goldstones. The $Z_5$ discrete symmetry also can be very important for GUT scale generation and an all order hierarchy. Fermion masses are naturally generated and nicely blend with additional symmetries. In the considered scenario unification of the three gauge couplings occurs near $10^{16}$ GeV.

The 5D MSSM on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2$ orbifold with 'minimal' field content does not lead to low scale unification, while some of its extensions can give unification near the multi TeV scale. Within the orbifold SU(5) GUT, low scale unification can not be realized due to full SU(5) multiplets participating in the renormalization above the compactification scale. As alternative examples, we construct 5D N=1 SUSY Pati-Salam $SU(4)_c\tm SU(2)_L\tm SU(2)_R\equiv G_{422}$ and flipped $SU(5)\tm U(1)\equiv G_{51}$ GUTs [both maximal subgroups of SO(10)] on an $S^{(1)}/Z_2\tm Z_2'$ orbifold. New examples of low scale unifications within $G_{422}$ are presented. For $G_{51}$ the unification scale is shown to be necessarily close to $\sim 10^{16}$ GeV. The possible influence of brane couplings on the gauge coupling unification is also outlined. For the resolution of the various phenomenological problems extensions with a discrete ${\cal Z}$ symmetry turn out to be very effective.
