Abstract:
We focus on a behavioral model, that has been recently proposed in the literature, whose rational can be traced back to the Half-Full/Half-Empty glass metaphor. More precisely, we generalize the Half-Full/Half-Empty approach to the context of positive and negative lotteries and give financial and behavioral interpretations of the Half-Full/Half-Empty parameters. We develop a portfolio selection model based on the Half-Full/Half-Empty strategy, resulting in a nonconvex optimization problem, which, nonetheless, is proven to be equivalent to an alternative Mixed-Integer Linear Programming formulation. By means of the ensuing empirical analysis, based on three real-world datasets, the Half-Full/Half-Empty model is shown to be very versatile by appropriately varying its parameters, and to provide portfolios displaying promising performances in terms of risk and profitability, compared with Prospect Theory, risk minimization approaches and Equally-Weighted portfolios.

Stochastic ordering in multivariate extremes
Authors:

Abstract:
The article considers the multivariate stochastic orders of upper orthants, lower orthants and positive quadrant dependence (PQD) among simple max-stable distributions and their exponent measures. It is shown for each order that it holds for the max-stable distribution if and only if it holds for the corresponding exponent measure. The finding is non-trivial for upper orthants (and hence PQD order…

The finding is non-trivial for upper orthants (and hence PQD order). From dimension $d\geq 3$ these three orders are not equivalent and a variety of phenomena can occur. However, every simple max-stable distribution PQD-dominates the corresponding independent model and is PQD-dominated by the fully dependent model. Among parametric models the asymmetric Dirichlet family and the Hüsler-Reiss family turn out to be PQD-ordered according to the natural order within their parameter spaces. For the Hüsler-Reiss family this holds true even for the supermodular order.

Abstract:
The effect of the energy deposition inside the human body made by radioactive substances is discussed. For the first time, we stress the importance of the recoiling nucleus in such reactions, particularly concerning the damage caused on the DNA structure.

We report here experimental evidence of the reflection of a large fraction of a beam of low energy antiprotons by an aluminum wall. This derives from the analysis of a set of annihilations of antiprotons that come to rest in rarefied helium gas after hitting the end wall of the apparatus. A Monte Carlo simulation of the antiproton path in aluminum indicates that the observed reflection occurs primarily via a multiple Rutherford-style scattering on Al nuclei, at least in the energy range 1-10 keV where the phenomenon is most visible in the analyzed data. These results contradict the common belief according to which the interactions between matter and antimatter are dominated by the reciprocally destructive phenomenon of annihilation.

Abstract:
We present an analytical expression for the local field factor G(q) of the homogeneous electron gas which reproduces recently published Quantum Monte--Carlo data by S. Moroni, D.M. Ceperley, and G. Senatore [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 689 (1995)], reflects the theoretically known asymptotic behaviours for both small and large q limits, and allows to express the exchange-correlation kernel K_{xc} analy…

The last property is particularly useful in numerical applications to real solids
