We report two fundamental inequalities in the Stoner-Wohlfarth model. Specifically, we investigate the theoretical limit for the initial magnetic susceptibility in a system described by the Stoner-Wohlfarth approach. We also find analytical solutions for the magnetization in the low-field regime and obtain the borderline value for the uniaxial anisotropy constant in such an ideal Stoner-Wohlfarth system. We go beyond and introduce a general mean-field theory for interacting Stoner-Wohlfarth-like systems, thus estimating how the initial magnetic susceptibility is affected by the dipolar and exchange interactions inside the system. By means of a simple insight from a fundamental inequality for the magnetic susceptibility of an ideal Stoner-Wohlfarth system, we show its violation is a signature of the existence of exchange interactions between nanoparticles in an interacting Stoner-Wohlfarth-like system.

Magnetic anisotropies have key role to taylor magnetic behavior in ferromagnetic systems. Further, they are also essential elements to manipulate the thermoelectric response in Anomalous Nernst (ANE) and Longitudinal Spin Seebeck systems (LSSE). We propose here a theoretical approach and explore the role of magnetic anisotropies on the magnetization and thermoelectric response of noninteracting multidomain ferromagnetic systems. The magnetic behavior and the thermoelectric curves are calculated from a modified Stoner Wohlfarth model for an isotropic system, a uniaxial magnetic one, as well as for a system having a mixture of uniaxial and cubic magnetocrystalline magnetic anisotropies. It is verified remarkable modifications of the magnetic behavior with the anisotropy and it is shown that the thermoelectric response is strongly affected by these changes. Further, the fingerprints of the energy contributions to the thermoelectric response are disclosed. To test the robustness of our theoretical approach, we engineer films having the specific magnetic properties and compare directly experimental data with theoretical results. Thus, experimental evidence is provided to confirm the validity of our theoretical approach. The results go beyond the traditional reports focusing on magnetically saturated films and show how the thermoelectric effect behaves during the whole magnetization curve. Our findings reveal a promising way to explore the ANE and LSSE effects as a powerful tool to study magnetic anisotropies, as well as to employ systems with magnetic anisotropy as sensing or elements in technological applications.

Specifically, we propose a theoretical approach to magnetic hyperthermia from a thermodynamic point of view. To test the robustness of the approach, we perform hyperthermia experiments and analyze the thermal behavior of magnetite and magnesium ferrite magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in water submitted to an alternating magnetic field. The core-cusp problem remains as a challenging discrepancy between observations and simulations in the standard $Λ$CDM model for the formation of galaxies. The problem is that $Λ$CDM simulations predict a steep power-law mass density profile at the center of galactic dark matter halos. However, observations of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group reveal a density profile consistent with a nearly flat distribution of dark matter near the center. A number of solutions to this dilemma have been proposed. Here, we summarize investigations into the possibility that the dark matter particles themselves self interact and scatter. Such self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) particles can smooth out the dark-matter profile in high-density regions. We also review the theoretical proposal that self-interacting dark matter may arise as an additional Higgs scalar in the 3-3-1 extension of the standard model. We present new simulations of galaxy formation and evolution for this formulation of self-interacting dark matter. Current constraints on this self-interacting dark matter are then summarized.

The anomalous Nernst effect in nanostructured magnetic materials is a key phenomenon to optimally control and employ the internal energy dissipated in electronic devices, being dependent on for instance the magnetic anisotropy of the active element. Thereby, here we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film with induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and under external stress. Specifically, we calculate the magnetization behavior and the thermoelectric voltage response from a theoretical approach for a planar geometry and with a magnetic free energy density which takes into account the induced uniaxial and magnetoelastic anisotropy contributions. Experimentally, we verify modifications of the effective magnetic anisotropy and thermoelectric voltage with the stress and explore the possibility of tailoring the anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film by modifying both, the magnetic field and external stress. We find quantitative agreement between experiment and numerical calculations, thus elucidating the magnetic and thermoelectric voltage behaviors, as well as providing evidence to confirm the validity of the theoretical approach to describe the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in ferromagnetic magnetostrictive films having uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and submitted to external stress. Hence, the results place flexible magnetostrictive systems as a promising candidate for active elements in functionalized touch electronic devices.

Many systems crackle, from earthquakes and financial market to Barkhausen effect in ferromagnetic materials. Despite the diversity in essence, the noise emitted in these dynamical systems consists of avalanche-like events with broad range of sizes and durations, characterized by power-law avalanche distributions and typical average avalanche shape that are signatures dependent on the universality class of the underlying dynamics. Here we focus on the crackling noise in ferromagnets and scrutinize the traditional statistics of Barkhausen avalanches in polycrystalline and amorphous ferromagnetic films having different thicknesses. We show how scaling exponents and average shape of the avalanches evolve with the structural character of the materials and film thickness. We find quantitative agreement between experiment and theoretical predictions of models for the magnetic domain wall dynamics, and then elucidate the universality classes of Barkhausen avalanches in ferromagnetic films. Thereby, we observe for the first time the dimensional crossover in the domain wall dynamics, and the outcomes of the interplay between system dimensionality and range of interactions governing the domain wall dynamics on Barkhausen avalanches.

Barkhausen effect in ferromagnetic materials provides an excellent area for investigating scaling phenomena found in disordered systems exhibiting crackling noise. The critical dynamics is characterized by random pulses or avalanches with scale-invariant properties, power-law distributions, and universal features. However, the traditional Barkhausen avalanches statistics may not be sufficient to fully characterize the complex temporal correlation of the magnetic domain walls dynamics. Here we go beyond power laws and focus on the multifractal scenario to quantify the temporal scaling characteristics of Barkhausen avalanches in polycrystalline and amorphous ferromagnetic films with thicknesses from $50$ nm to $1000$ nm. We show that the multifractal properties are dependent on the film thickness, and insensitive to the structural character of the materials. Further, we observe for the first time the collapse of the multifractality in the domain walls dynamics as the thickness is reduced, and the multifractal behavior gives place to a monofractal one over the entire range of time scales. The reorganization in the temporal scaling characteristics of Barkhausen avalanches is understood as an universal restructuring associated to the dimensional transition, from three to two-dimensional magnetization dynamics.

We provide the first quantitative comparison between Barkhausen-noise experiments and recent predictions from the theory of avalanches for pinned interfaces, both in and beyond mean-field. We study different classes of soft magnetic materials: polycrystals and amorphous samples, characterized by long-range and short-range elasticity, respectively; both for thick and thin samples, i.e. with and without eddy currents. The temporal avalanche shape at fixed size, and observables related to the joint distribution of sizes and durations are analyzed in detail. Both long-range and short-range samples with no eddy currents are fitted extremely well by the theoretical predictions. In particular, the short-range samples provide the first reliable test of the theory beyond mean field. The thick samples show systematic deviations from the scaling theory, providing unambiguous signatures for the presence of eddy currents.

The Stoner-Wohlfarth model is a traditional and efficient tool to calculate magnetization curves and it can provides further insights on the fundamental physics associated to the magnetic properties and magnetization dynamics. Here, we perform a theoretical and experimental investigation of the quasi-static magnetic properties of anisotropic systems. We consider a theoretical approach which corresponds to a modified version of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model to describe anisotropic systems and a distribution function to express the magnetic anistropy dispersion. We propose a procedure to calculate the magnetic properties for the anisotropic case of the SW model from experimental results of the quadrature of magnetization curves, thus quantifying the magnetic anisotropy dispersion. To test the robustness of the approach, we apply the theoretical model to describe the quasi-static magnetic properties of amorphous FeCuNbSiB ferromagnetic films. We perform calculations and directly compare theoretical results with longitudinal and transverse magnetization curves measured for the films. Thus, our results provide experimental evidence to confirm the validity of the theoretical approach to describe the magnetic properties of anisotropic amorphous ferromagnetic films, revealed by the excellent agreement between numerical calculation and experimental results.

The magnetoimpedance effect is a versatile tool to investigate ferromagnetic materials, revealing aspects on the fundamental physics associated to magnetization dynamics, broadband magnetic properties, important issues for current and emerging technological applications for magnetic sensors, as well as insights on ferromagnetic resonance effect at non-saturated magnetic states. Here, we perform a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetoimpedance effect for the thin film geometry in a wide frequency range. We calculate the longitudinal magnetoimpedance for single layered, multilayered or exchange biased systems from an approach that considers a magnetic permeability model for planar geometry and the appropriate magnetic free energy density for each structure. From numerical calculations and experimental results found in literature, we analyze the magnetoimpedance behavior, and discuss the main features and advantages of each structure. To test the robustness of the approach, we directly compare theoretical results with experimental magnetoimpedance measurements obtained in a wide range of frequencies for an exchange biased multilayered film. We investigate the statistical properties of the Barkhausen noise in amorphous ferromagnetic films with thicknesses in the range between $100$ and $1000$ nm. From Barkhausen noise time series measured with the traditional inductive technique, we perform a wide statistical analysis and establish the scaling exponents $τ$, $α$, $1/σνz$, and $\vartheta$. We also focus on the average shape of the avalanches, which gives further indications on the domain wall dynamics. Based on experimental results, we group the amorphous films in a single universality class, characterized by scaling exponents $τ\sim 1.27$, $α\sim 1.5$, $1/σνz \sim \vartheta \sim 1.77$, values similar to that obtained for several bulk amorphous magnetic materials. Besides, we verify that the avalanche shape depends on the universality class. By considering the theoretical models for the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall driven by an external magnetic field through a disordered medium found in literature, we interpret the results and identify an experimental evidence that these amorphous films, within this thickness range, present a typical three-dimensional magnetic behavior with predominant short-range elastic interactions governing the domain wall dynamics. Moreover, we provide experimental support for the validity of a general scaling form for the average avalanche shape for non-mean-field systems.

We apply the statistical treatment usually employed for bulk materials in experimental Barkhausen noise time series measured with the traditional inductive technique in polycrystalline ferromagnetic films having different thickness from 100 up to 1000 nm, and investigate the scaling exponents. Based on this procedure, we can group the samples in a single universality class, characterized by exponents τ\sim 1.5, α\sim 2.0, and 1/σνz \sim \vartheta \sim 2.0. We interpret these results in terms of theoretical models and provide experimental evidence that a well-known mean-field model for the dynamics of a ferromagnetic domain wall in three-dimensional ferromagnets can be extended for films. We identify that the films present an universal three-dimensional magnetization dynamics, governed by long-range dipolar interactions, even at the smallest thicknesses, indicating that the two-dimensional magnetic behavior commonly verified for films cannot be generalized for all thickness ranges.

The present paper theoretically investigates magnetoresistance curves in quasiperiodic magnetic multilayers for two different growth directions, namely [110] and [100]. We considered identical ferromagnetic layers separated by non-magnetic layers with two different thicknesses chosen based on the Fibonacci sequence. Using parameters for Fe/Cr multilayers, four terms were included in our description of the magnetic energy: Zeeman, cubic anisotropy, bilinear and biquadratic couplings. The minimum energy was determined by the gradient method and the equilibrium magnetization directions found were used to calculate magnetoresistance curves. By choosing spacers with a thickness such that biquadratic coupling is stronger than bilinear coupling, unusual behaviors for the magnetoresistance were observed: (i) for the [110] case there is a different behavior for structures based on even and odd Fibonacci generations; and more interesting, (ii) for the [100] case we found magnetic field ranges for which the magnetoresistance increases with magnetic field.

We studied the dynamics of magnetization through an investigation of the magnetoimpedance effect in CoFeB/(Ta, Ag, Cu) multilayered thin films grown by magnetron sputtering. Impedance measurements were analyzed in terms of the mechanisms responsible for their variations at different frequency intervals and the magnetic and structural properties of the multilayers. Analysis of the mechanisms responsible for magnetoimpedance according to frequency and external magnetic field showed that for the CoFeB/Cu multilayer, ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) contributes significantly to the magnetoimpedance effect at frequencies close to 470 MHz. This frequency is low when compared to the results obtained for CoFeB/Ta and CoFeB/Ag multilayers and is a result of the anisotropy distribution and non-formation of regular bilayers in this sample. The MImax values occurred at different frequencies according to the used non-magnetic metal. Variations between 25% and 30% were seen for a localized frequency band, as in the case of CoFeB/Ta and CoFeB/Ag, as well as for a wide frequency range, in the case of CoFeB/Cu.
