We describe the design and commissioning of a simple prototype, low-cost 10$μ$m imaging instrument. The system is built using commercially available components including an uncooled microbolometer array as a detector. The incorporation of adjustable germanium reimaging optics rescale the image to the appropriate plate scale for the 2-m diameter Liverpool Telescope. From observations of bright solar system and stellar sources, we demonstrate a plate scale of 0.75$^{\prime\prime}$ per pixel and confirm the optical design allows diffraction limited imaging. We record a $\sim$ 10$\%$ photometric stability due to sky variability. We measure a $3 σ$ sensitivity of $7 \times 10^{3}$ Jy for a single, $\sim$ 0.11 second exposure. This corresponds to a sensitivity limit of $3 \times 10^{2}$ Jy for a 60 second total integration. We present an example science case from observations of the 2019 Jan total lunar eclipse and show that the system can detect and measure the anomalous cooling rate associated with the features Bellot and Langrenus during eclipse.

Inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed in an S=3/2 bilayer honeycomb lattice compound Bi3Mn4O12(NO3) at ambient and high magnetic fields. Relatively broad and monotonically dispersive magnetic excitations were observed at ambient field, where no long range magnetic order exists. In the magnetic field-induced long-range ordered state at 10 T, the magnetic dispersions become slightly more intense, albeit still broad as in the disordered state, and two excitation gaps, probably originating from an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy and intrabilayer interactions, develop. Analyzing the magnetic dispersions using the linear spin-wave theory, we estimated the intraplane and intrabilayer magnetic interactions, which are almost consistent with those determined by ab initio density functional theory calculations [M. Alaei et al., Phys. Rev. B 96, 140404(R) (2017)], except the 3rd and 4th neighbor intrabilayer interactions. Most importantly, as predicted by the theory, there is no significant frustration in the honeycomb plane but frustrating intrabilayer interactions probably give rise to the disordered ground state.

The fundamental excitations in an antiferromagnetic chain of spins-1/2 are spinons, de-confined fractional quasiparticles that when combined in pairs, form a triplet excitation continuum. In an Ising-like spin chain the continuum is gapped and the ground state is N{é}el ordered. Here, we report high resolution neutron scattering experiments, which reveal how a magnetic field closes this gap and drives the spin chains in \YPP\ to a critical, disordered Luttinger-liquid state. In \YPP\ the effective spins-1/2 describe the dynamics of large, Ising-like Yb magnetic moments, ensuring that the measured excitations are exclusively longitudinal, which we find to be well described by time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations. The inter-chain coupling leads to the confinement of spinons, a condensed matter analog of quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. Insensitive to transverse fluctuations, our measurements show how a gapless, dispersive longitudinal mode arises from confinement and evolves with magnetic order.

Spin-ice correlations are apparent within 0.2 meV of the Zeeman energy. A random phase approximation provides an excellent account of the data with a transverse field distribution $ρ(Δ)\propto (Δ^2+Γ^2)^{-1}$ where $ Γ=0.27(1)$ meV. Established during high temperature synthesis due to an underlying structural instability, it appears disorder in Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ actually induces a quantum spin liquid.

Exotic quantum states and fractionalized magnetic excitations, such as spinons in one-dimensional chains, are generally viewed as belonging to the domain of 3d transition metal systems with spins 1/2. Our neutron scattering experiments on the 4f-electron metal Yb$_2$Pt$_2$Pb overturn this common wisdom. We observe broad magnetic continuum dispersing in only one direction, which indicates that the underlying elementary excitations are spinons carrying fractional spin-1/2. These spinons are the quantum dynamics of the anisotropic, orbital-dominated Yb moments, and thus these effective quantum spins are emergent variables that encode the electronic orbitals. The unique birthmark of their unusual origin is that only longitudinal spin fluctuations are measurable, while the transverse excitations such as spin waves are virtually invisible to magnetic neutron scattering. The proliferation of these orbital-spinons strips the electrons of their orbital identity, and we thus report here a new electron fractionalization phenomenon, charge-orbital separation.

Recent low temperature heat capacity (C$_P$) measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$ have shown a strong sensitivity to the precise Tb concentration $x$, with a large anomaly exhibited for $x \sim 0.005$ at $T_C \sim 0.5$ K and no such anomaly and corresponding phase transition for $x \le 0$. We have grown single crystal samples of Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$, with approximate composition $x=-0.001, +0.0042$, and $+0.0147$, where the $x=0.0042$ single crystal exhibits a large C$_P$ anomaly at $T_C$=0.45 K, but neither the $x=-0.001$ nor the $x=+0.0147$ single crystals display any such anomaly. We present new time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on the $x=-0.001$ and the $x=+0.0147$ samples which show strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks at low temperatures characteristic of short range antiferromagnetic spin ice (AFSI) order at zero magnetic field but only under field-cooled conditions, as was previously observed in our $x = 0.0042$ single crystal. These results show that the strong $\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2}\right)$ quasi-Bragg peaks and gapped AFSI state at low temperatures under field cooled conditions are robust features of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and are not correlated with the presence or absence of the C$_P$ anomaly and phase transition at low temperatures. Further, these results show that the ordered state giving rise to the C$_P$ anomaly is confined to $0 \leq x \leq 0.01$ for Tb$_{2+x}$Ti$_{2-x}$O$_{7+δ}$, and is not obviously connected with conventional order of magnetic dipole degrees of freedom.

Since the discovery of spin glasses in dilute magnetic systems, their study has been largely focused on understanding randomness and defects as the driving mechanism. The same paradigm has also been applied to explain glassy states found in dense frustrated systems. Recently, however, it has been theoretically suggested that different mechanisms, such as quantum fluctuations and topological features, may induce glassy states in defect-free spin systems, far from the conventional dilute limit. Here we report experimental evidence for the existence of a glassy state, that we call a spin jam, in the vicinity of the clean limit of a frustrated magnet, which is insensitive to a low concentration of defects. We have studied the effect of impurities on SrCr9pGa12-9pO19 (SCGO(p)), a highly frustrated magnet, in which the magnetic Cr3+ (s=3/2) ions form a quasi-two-dimensional triangular system of bi-pyramids. Our experimental data shows that as the nonmagnetic Ga3+ impurity concentration is changed, there are two distinct phases of glassiness: a distinct exotic glassy state, which we call a "spin jam", for high magnetic concentration region (p>0.8) and a cluster spin glass for lower magnetic concentration, (p<0.8). This observation indicates that a spin jam is a unique vantage point from which the class of glassy states in dense frustrated magnets can be understood.

Methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) based solar cells have shown impressive power conversion efficiencies of above 20%. However, the microscopic mechanism of the high photovoltaic performance is yet to be fully understood. Particularly, the dynamics of CH3NH3+ cations and their impact on relevant processes such as charge recombination and exciton dissociation are still poorly understood. Here, using elastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering techniques and group theoretical analysis, we studied rotational modes of the CH3NH3+ cation in CH3NH3PbI3. Our results show that, in the cubic (T > 327K) and tetragonal (165K < T < 327K) phases, the CH3NH3+ ions exhibit four-fold rotational symmetry of the C-N axis (C4) along with three-fold rotation around the C-N axis (C3), while in orthorhombic phase (T < 165K) only C3 rotation is present. Around room temperature, the characteristic relaxation times for the C4 rotation is found to be ps while for the C3 rotation ps. The -dependent rotational relaxation times were fitted with Arrhenius equations to obtain activation energies. Our data show a close correlation between the C4 rotational mode and the temperature dependent dielectric permittivity. Our findings on the rotational dynamics of CH3NH3+ and the associated dipole have important implications on understanding the low exciton binding energy and slow charge recombination rate in CH3NH3PbI3 which are directly relevant for the high solar cell performance.

Neutron diffraction measurements were carried out on single crystals and powders of Yb2Pt2Pb, where Yb moments form planes of orthogonal dimers in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Yb2Pt2Pb orders antiferromagnetically at TN=2.07 K, and the magnetic structure determined from these measurements features the interleaving of two orthogonal sublattices into a 5*5*1 magnetic supercell that is based on stripes with moments perpendicular to the dimer bonds, which are along (110) and (-110). Magnetic fields applied along (110) or (-110) suppress the antiferromagnetic peaks from an individual sublattice, but leave the orthogonal sublattice unaffected, evidence for the Ising character of the Yb moments in Yb2Pt2Pb. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements concur with neutron elastic scattering results that the longitudinal critical fluctuations are gapped with E about 0.07 meV.

In this paper, we investigate the crossover from localized to itinerant regimes in the spinel system Mn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$V$_2$O$_4$. At low Co do**, orbital order (OO) of the localized electrons on the V3+ ions suppresses magnetic frustration by triggering a tetragonal distortion. With Co do**, electronic itinerancy melts the OO and suppresses the structural phase transition while the reduced spin-lattice coupling produces magnetic frustration. Neutron scattering measurements and first-principles-guided spin models reveal that the non-collinear state at high Co do** is produced by weakened local anisotropy and enhanced Co-V spin interactions.

Magnetic excitations in three distinct regimes of magnetization are probed through inelastic neutron scattering at low temperatures. At low and high fields there are three and two long-lived magnon-like modes, respectively. The number of modes and the anti-phase relationship between the wave-vector dependent energy and intensity of magnon scattering reflect the distinct ground states: A singlet ground state at low fields $μ_0H < μ_0H_{c1} = 2.8$~T and an $S_z=1/2$ product state at high fields $μ_0H > μ_0H_{c2} = 4.2$~T. In the intermediate field regime, a continuum of scattering for $\hbarω\approx J_1$ is indicative of a strongly correlated gapless quantum state without coherent magnons.

The recent determination of a robust spin Hamiltonian for the anti-ferromagnetic XY pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7 reveals a most convincing case of the "order by quantum disorder" (ObQD) mechanism for ground state selection. This mechanism relies on quantum fluctuations to remove an accidental symmetry of the magnetic ground state, and selects a particular ordered spin structure below T_N=1.2K. The removal of the continuous degeneracy results in an energy gap in the spectrum of spin wave excitations, long wavelength pseudo-Goldstone modes. We have measured the ObQD spin wave gap at a zone center in Er2Ti2O7, using low incident energy neutrons and the time-of-flight inelastic scattering method. We report a gap of Delta =0.053 +/- 0.006 meV, which is consistent with upper bounds placed on it from heat capacity measurements and roughly consistent with theoretical estimate of ~ 0.02 meV, further validating the spin Hamiltonian that led to that prediction. The gap is observed to vary with square of the order parameter, and goes to zero for T ~ T_N.

We present a parametric study of the diffuse magnetic scattering at (1/2,1/2,1/2) positions in reciprocal space, ascribed to a frozen antiferromagnetic spin ice state in single crystalline Tb2Ti2O7. Our high-resolution neutron scattering measurements show that the elastic (-0.02 meV < E < 0.02 meV) (1/2,1/2,1/2) scattering develops strongly below ~275 mK, and correlates with the opening of a spin gap of ~0.06-0.08 meV over most of the Brillouin zone. The concomitant low-lying magnetic spin excitations are weakly dispersive and appear to soften near the (1/2,1/2,1/2) wave vector at 80 mK. The nature of the transition at 275 mK has many characteristics of spin glass behavior, consistent with ac-susceptibility measurements. The application of a magnetic field of 0.075 T applied along the [1-10] direction destroys the (1/2,1/2,1/2) elastic scattering, revealing the fragility of this short-range ordered ground state. We construct a refined H-T phase diagram for Tb2Ti2O7 and [1-10] fields which incorporates this frozen spin ice regime and the antiferromagnetic long-range order previously known to be induced in relatively large fields. Specific heat measurements on the same crystal reveal a sharp anomaly at Tc~450 mK and no indication of a transition near ~275 mK. We conclude that the higher temperature specific heat peak is not related to the magnetic ordering but is likely a signal of other, nonmagnetic, correlations.

We present neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of lightly doped $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0 \leq x \leq? 0.035$. These reveal the evolution of the magnetism in this prototypical doped Mott insulator from a three dimensional (3D) commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic ground state, which orders at a relatively high TN, to a two dimensional (2D) incommensurate (IC) ground state with finite ranged static correlations, which appear below a relatively low effective TN. At low temperatures, the 2D IC magnetism co-exists with the 3D C magnetism for do** concentrations as low as ? 0.0125. We find no signal of a 3D C magnetic ground state by x $\sim$? 0.025, consistent with the upper limit of x $\sim$? 0.02 observed in the sister family of doped Mott insulators, $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. The 2D IC ground states observed for $0.0125 \leq x \leq 0.035$ are diagonal, and are rotated by 45 degrees within the orthorhombic basal plane compared with those previously reported for samples with superconducting ground states: $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0.05 \leq? x \leq? 0.095. We construct a phase diagram based solely on magnetic order parameter measurements, which displays much of the complexity of standard high temperature superconductivity phase diagrams discussed in the literature. Analysis of high energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering at moderately low temperatures shows a progressive depletion of the very low energy dynamic magnetic susceptibility as x increases from 0.0125 to 0.035. This low energy, dynamic susceptibility falls off? with increasing temperature on a scale much higher than the effective 2D IC TN appropriate to these materials. Appreciable dynamic 2D IC magnetic fluctuations inhabit much of the "pseudogap" regime of the phase diagram.

Co3V2O8 is an orthorhombic magnet in which S=3/2 magnetic moments reside on two crystallographically inequivalent Co2+ sites, which decorate a stacked, buckled version of the two dimensional kagome lattice, the stacked kagome staircase. The magnetic interactions between the Co2+ moments in this structure lead to a complex magnetic phase diagram at low temperature, wherein it exhibits a series of five transitions below 11 K that ultimately culminate in a simple ferromagnetic ground state below T~6.2 K. Here we report magnetization measurements on single and polycrystalline samples of (Co(1-x)Mg(x))3V2O8 for x<0.23, as well as elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of magnetically dilute (Co(1-x)Mg(x))3V2O8 for x=0.029 and x=0.194, in which non-magnetic Mg2+ ions substitute for magnetic Co2+. We find that a dilution of 2.9% leads to a suppression of the ferromagnetic transition temperature by ~15% while a dilution level of 19.4% is sufficient to destroy ferromagnetic long-range order in this material down to a temperature of at least 1.5 K. The magnetic excitation spectrum is characterized by two spin-wave branches in the ordered phase for (Co(1-x)Mg(x))3V2O8 (x=0.029), similar to that of the pure x=0 material, and by broad diffuse scattering at temperatures below 10 K in (Co(1-x)Mg(x))3V2O8 (x=0.194). Such a strong dependence of the transition temperatures to long range order in the presence of quenched non-magnetic impurities is consistent with two-dimensional physics driving the transitions. We further provide a simple percolation model that semi-quantitatively explains the inability of this system to establish long-range magnetic order at the unusually-low dilution levels which we observe in our experiments.

In this paper detailed neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitation spectrum of CuCrO$_2$ in the ordered state below $T_{\rm{N1}}=24.2$ K are presented. The spectra are analyzed using a model Hamiltonian which includes intralayer-exchange up to the next-next-nearest neighbor and interlayer-exchange. We obtain a definite parameter set and show that exchange interaction terms beyond the next-nearest neighbor are important to describe the inelastic excitation spectrum. The magnetic ground state structure generated with our parameter set is in agreement with the structure proposed for CuCrO$_2$ from the results of single crystal diffraction experiments previously published. We argue that the role of the interlayer exchange is crucial to understand the incommensurability of the magnetic structure as well as the spin-charge coupling mechanism.

For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons.

Rods of scattering along < 111 > directions due to these 2D spin correlations imply a magnetic decomposition of the cubic pyrochlore system into decoupled kagome planes. A magnetic field of ~0.5 T applied along the [1-10] direction induces a transition to a 3D LRO state characterized by long-lived, dispersive spin waves. Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on the pyrochlore magnet Ho2Ti2O7. Measurements in zero applied magnetic field show that the disordered spin ice ground state of Ho2Ti2O7 is characterized by a pattern of rectangular diffuse elastic scattering within the [HHL] plane of reciprocal space, which closely resembles the zone boundary scattering seen in its sister compound Dy2Ti2O7. Well-defined peaks in the zone boundary scattering develop only within the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K. In contrast, the overall diffuse scattering pattern evolves on a much higher temperature scale of ~ 17 K. The diffuse scattering at small wavevectors below [001] is found to vanish on going to Q=0, an explicit signature of expectations for dipolar spin ice. Very high energy-resolution inelastic measurements reveal that the spin ice ground state below ~ 2 K is also characterized by a transition from dynamic to static spin correlations on the time scale of 10^{-9} seconds. Measurements in a magnetic field applied along the [1${\bar1}$0] direction in zero-field cooled conditions show that the system can be broken up into orthogonal sets of polarized alpha chains along [1${\bar1}$0] and quasi-one-dimensional beta chains along [110]. Three dimensional correlations between beta chains are shown to be very sensitive to the precise alignment of the [1${\bar1}$0] externally applied magnetic field.

We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals, subject to magnetic fields applied along the crystallographic [110] direction, reveal unconventional low energy states. Er$^{3+}$ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excitations previously believed to be absent. The application of finite magnetic fields tunes the ground state continuously through a landscape of non-collinear phases, divided by a zero temperature phase transition at $μ_0 H_c \sim$ 1.5 T. The characteristic energy scale for spin fluctuations is seen to vanish at the critical point, as expected for a second order quantum phase transition driven by quantum fluctuations.

By means of neutron scattering we show that the high-temperature precursor to the hidden order state of the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ exhibits heavily damped incommensurate paramagnons whose strong energy dispersion is very similar to that of the long-lived longitudinal f-spin excitations that appear below T$_{0}$. Since the underlying local f-exchange is preserved we expect only the f-d interactions to change across the phase transition and to cause the paramagnetic dam**. The dam** exhibits single-ion behavior independent of wave vector and vanishes below the hidden order transition. We suggest that this arises from a transition from valence fluctuations to a hybridized f-d state below T$_{0}$. Here we present evidence that the itinerant excitations, like those in chromium, are due to Fermi surface nesting of hole and electron pockets so that the hidden order phase likely originates from a Fermi-surface instability. We identify wave vectors that span nested regions of a band calculation and that match the neutron spin crossover from incommensurate to commensurate on approach to the hidden order phase.

While our inelastic measurements offer no constraints on the spin dynamic response from d-wave pairing, an upper limit for the magnetic resonance peak predicted from an extended s-wave pairing mechanism is provided. Our measurements also support the energy scale of the calculated phonon spectrum which is used in electron-phonon coupling theory, and fails to produce the high observed Tc.

Recent theoretical and experimental work on solid He-4 has focused on vacancies, or other lattice defects and whether these can form a Bose-Einstein condensate within the solid. The earliest suggestion that this could happen was based on the conjecture that the ground state of the solid at T = 0 K would include vacancies. Although no direct evidence for zero point vacancies has been presented, a variety of experimental observations have been interpreted as being due to thermally activated vacancies. Here we directly probe the excitation spectrum of hcp solid He-4 using inelastic neutron scattering. We identify a branch of delocalized excitations, with both longitudinal and transverse dispersion that coexist with acoustic phonons. While the energy gap is larger and the characteristic wavevector is shifted to coincide with the position of the (100) Bragg peak, the longitudinal effective mass of this mode is within 15% of that for rotons in superfluid He-4. The dispersion relation intersects the longitudinal acoustic phonon half way to the zone boundary, and this distinguishes the mode from a conventional optic phonon. Our results provide direct evidence for coherent delocalized non-phonon excitations in solid helium, which we identify as delocalized vacancy modes.

Static incommensurate magnetic order is observed in the La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.05 and 0.025) compounds with ordering wavevectors which are rotated by 45 degree about the commensurate (0.5,0.5,0) position, with respect to that in the superconducting x=0.08 material. These spin modulations are one dimensional in the x=0.05 and 0.025 samples, with ordering wavevectors lying along the orthorhombic b* direction. Such a rotation in the orientation of the static spin ordering as a function of increasing Ba do**, from diagonal to collinear, is roughly coincident with the transition from an insulating to a superconducting ground state and is similar to that observed in the related La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system. This phenomenon is therefore a generic property of underdoped La-214 cuprates.

One of the primary goals of modern condensed matter physics is to elucidate the nature of the ground state in various electronic systems. Many correlated electron materials, such as high temperature superconductors, geometrically frustrated oxides, and low-dimensional magnets are still the objects of fruitful study because of the unique properties which arise due to poorly understood many-body effects. Heavy fermion metals - materials which have high effective electron masses due to these effects - represent a class of materials with exotic properties, such as unusual magnetism, unconventional superconductivity, and "hidden order" parameters. The heavy fermion superconductor URu2Si2 has held the attention of physicists for the last two decades due to the presence of a "hidden order" phase below 17.5 K. Neutron scattering measurements indicate that the ordered moment is 0.03 $μ_{B}$, much too small to account for the large heat capacity anomaly at 17.5 K. We present recent neutron scattering experiments which unveil a new piece of this puzzle - the spin excitation spectrum above 17.5 K exhibits well-correlated, itinerant-like spin excitations up to at least 10 meV emanating from incommensurate wavevectors. The gap** of these excitations corresponds to a large entropy release and explains the reduction in the electronic specific heat through the transition.

In zero field at T=0.4 K, terbium titanate is a highly correlated cooperative paramagnet with disordered spins residing on a pyrochlore lattice of corner-sharing tetrahedra. Application of a small field condenses much of the magnetic diffuse scattering, characteristic of the disordered spins, into a new Bragg peak characteristic of a polarized paramagnet. At higher fields, a magnetically ordered phase is induced, which supports spin wave excitations indicative of continuous, rather than Ising-like spin degrees of freedom.

With hole do** as in La1-xSrxCoO3, the FM correlations between Co spins become static and isotropically distributed due to the formation of FM droplets. The correlation length and condensation temperature of these droplets increase rapidly with metallicity due to the double exchange mechanism.

High resolution, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on SrCu2(BO3)2 reveal the dispersion of the three single triplet excitations continuously across the (H,0) direction within its tetragonal basal plane. These measurements also show distinct Q dependencies for the single and multiple triplet excitations, and that these excitations are largely dispersionless perpendicular to this plane. The temperature dependence of the intensities of these excitations is well described as the complement of the dc-susceptibility of SrCu2(BO3)2.

Abstract:
We have performed elastic diffuse neutron scattering studies on the relaxor Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_3$ (PMN). The measured intensity distribution near a (100) Bragg peak in the (hk0) scattering plane assumes the shape of a butterfly with extended intensity in the (110) and (1$\bar{1}$0) directions. The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering shows that both the size of the polar nano…

The measured intensity distribution near a (100) Bragg peak in the (hk0) scattering plane assumes the shape of a butterfly with extended intensity in the (110) and (1$\bar{1}$0) directions. The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering shows that both the size of the polar nanoregions (PNR) and the integrated diffuse intensity increase with cooling even for temperatures below the Curie temperature $T_C \sim 213$ K.

Abstract:
We used inelastic neutron scattering to show that well below its Néel temperature, $T_{\rm N}$, the two-dimensional (2D) XY nearly-triangular antiferromagnet YMnO$_{3}$ has a prominent {\it central peak} associated with 2D antiferromagnetic fluctuations with a characteristic life time of 0.55(5) ps, coexisting with the conventional long-lived spin-waves. Existence of the two time scales suggests…

Existence of the two time scales suggests competition between the Néel phase favored by weak interplane interactions, and the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase intrinsic to the 2D XY spin system.
