The Duality Symmetric String at Two-loops
Abstract: The Tseytlin duality symmetric string makes manifest the $O(n,n)$ T-duality symmetry on the worldsheet at the expense of manifest Lorentz invariance. Here we consider the two-loop renormalisation of this model in the context of "cosmological" spacetimes consisting of an internal $n$-dimensional torus fibred over a one-dimensional base manifold. The lack of manifest Lorentz symmetry introduces a ra… ▽ More

Superconformal Yang-Mills quantum mechanics and Calogero model with OSp(N|2,R) symmetry
Abstract: In spacetime dimension two, pure Yang-Mills possesses no physical degrees of freedom, and consequently it admits a supersymmetric extension to couple to an arbitrary number, N say, of Majorana-Weyl gauginos. This results in (N,0) super Yang-Mills. Further, its dimensional reduction to mechanics doubles the number of supersymmetries, from N to N+N, to include conformal supercharges, and leads to a… ▽ More

A Double Sigma Model for Double Field Theory
Abstract: We define a sigma model with doubled target space and calculate its background field equations. These coincide with generalised metric equation of motion of double field theory, thus the double field theory is the effective field theory for the sigma model.

Connecting T-duality invariant theories
Abstract: We show that the vanishing of the one-loop beta-functional of the doubled formalism (which describes string theory on a torus fibration in which the fibres are doubled) is the same as the equation of motion of the recently proposed generalised metric formulation of double field theory restricted to this background: both are the vanishing of a generalised Ricci tensor. That this tensor arises in bo… ▽ More

Holographic Thermalization
Abstract: Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we probe the scale-dependence of thermalization in strongly coupled field theories following a quench, via calculations of two-point functions, Wilson loops and entanglement entropy in d=2,3,4. In the saddlepoint approximation these probes are computed in AdS space in terms of invariant geometric objects - geodesics, minimal surfaces and minimal volumes. Our calcu… ▽ More

Introductory Lectures on Multiple Membranes
Abstract: These lecture notes introduce the multiple membrane theories known as BLG and ABJM. We assume the reader is familiar with string theory, but not with M-theory, 11-dimensional supergravity or membranes. We therefore start with a background on M-theory and its extended objects before discussing BLG and ABJM. The link to string theory via dimensional reduction will be maintained throughout.

Background Field Equations for the Duality Symmetric String
Abstract: This paper describes the background field equations for strings in T-duality symmetric formalisms in which the dimension of target space is doubled and the sigma model supplemented with constraints. These are calculated by demanding the vanishing of the beta-functional of the sigma model couplings in the doubled target space. We demonstrate the equivalence with the background field equations of… ▽ More

Aspects of M-Theory Brane Interactions and String Theory Symmetries
Abstract: The dissertation consists of two parts. The first presents an account of the effective worldvolume description of $N$ coincident M2-branes ending on an M5-brane in M-theory. It reviews Basu and Harvey's recent description of the worldvolume theory of the M2-branes in terms of a Bogomol'nyi equation, and its solution via a fuzzy (three-) funnel. Tests of the consistency of this picture are then p… ▽ More

The string partition function in Hull's doubled formalism
Abstract: T-duality is one of the essential elements of string theory. Recently, Hull has developed a formalism where the dimension of the target space is doubled so as to make T-duality manifest. This is then supplemented with a constraint equation that allows the connection to the usual string sigma model. This paper analyses the partition function of the doubled formalism by interpreting the constraint… ▽ More

A note on the M2-M5 brane system and fuzzy spheres
Abstract: This note covers various aspects of recent attempts to describe membranes ending on fivebranes using fuzzy geometry. In particular, we examine the Basu-Harvey equation and its relation to the Nahm equation as well as the consequences of using a non-associative algebra for the fuzzy three-sphere. This produces the tantalising result that the fuzzy funnel solution corresponding to Q coincident mem… ▽ More
