A family of multispecies Ising models on generalized regular random graphs is investigated in the thermodynamic limit. The architecture is specified by class-dependent couplings and magnetic fields. We prove that the magnetizations, neighbours correlations and free energy converge to suitable functions evaluated at the solution of a belief propagation fixed point equation. In absence of magnetic fields, a phase transition is identified and the corresponding critical parameters are determined by the spectral radius of a low-dimensional matrix.

Two of the main factors sha** an individual's opinion are social coordination and personal preferences, or personal biases. To understand the role of those and that of the topology of the network of interactions, we study an extension of the voter model proposed by Masuda and Redner (2011), where the agents are divided into two populations with opposite preferences. We consider a modular graph with two communities that reflect the bias assignment, modeling the phenomenon of epistemic bubbles. We analyze the models by approximate analytical methods and by simulations. Depending on the network and the biases' strengths, the system can either reach a consensus or a polarized state, in which the two populations stabilize to different average opinions. The modular structure has generally the effect of increasing both the degree of polarization and its range in the space of parameters. When the difference in the bias strengths between the populations is large, the success of the very committed group in imposing its preferred opinion onto the other one depends largely on the level of segregation of the latter population, while the dependency on the topological structure of the former is negligible. We compare the simple mean-field approach with the pair approximation and test the goodness of the mean-field predictions on a real network.

In order to have an idea of what is coming we propose a model that simulate a Human-AI ecosystem. In particular we consider systems where agents present biases, peer-to-peer interactions and also three body interactions that are crucial and describe two humans interacting with an artificial agent and two artificial intelligence agents interacting with a human. We focus our analysis by exploring how the relative fraction of artificial intelligence agents affect that ecosystem. We find evidence that for suitable values of the interaction parameters, arbitrarily small changes in such percentage may trigger dramatic changes for the system that can be either in one of the two polarised states or in an undecided state.

The Wigner spiked model in a mismatched setting is studied with the finite temperature Statistical Mechanics approach through its representation as a Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model with added Mattis interaction. The exact solution of the model with Ising spins is rigorously proved to be given by a variational principle on two order parameters, the Parisi overlap distribution and the Mattis magnetization. The latter is identified by an ordinary variational principle and turns out to concentrate in the thermodynamic limit. The solution leads to the computation of the Mean Square Error of the mismatched reconstruction. The Gaussian signal distribution case is investigated and the corresponding phase diagram is identified.

We develop further the study of a system in contact with a multibath having different temperatures at widely separated timescales. We consider those systems that do not thermalize in finite times when in contact with an ordinary bath but may do so in contact with a multibath. Thermodynamic integration is possible, thus allowing one to recover the stationary distribution on the basis of measurements performed in a `multi-reversible' transformation. We show that following such a protocol the system is at each step described by a generalization of the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution, that has been studied in the past. Guerra's bound interpolation scheme for spin-glasses is closely related to this: by translating it into a dynamical setting, we show how it may actually be implemented in practice. The phase diagram plane of temperature vs "number of replicas", long studied in spin-glasses, in our approach becomes simply that of the two temperatures the system is in contact with. We suggest that this representation may be used to directly compare phenomenological and mean-field inspired models. Finally, we show how an approximate out of equilibrium probability distribution may be inferred experimentally on the basis of measurements along an almost reversible transformation.

A class of deep Boltzmann machines is considered in the simplified framework of a quenched system with Gaussian noise and independent entries. The quenched pressure of a $K$-layers spin glass model is studied allowing interactions only among consecutive layers. A lower bound for the pressure is found in terms of a convex combination of $K$ Sherrington-Kirkpatrick models and used to study the annealed and replica symmetric regimes of the system. A map with a one dimensional monomer-dimer system is identified and used to rigorously control the annealed region at arbitrary depth $K$ with the methods introduced by Heilmann and Lieb. The compression of this high noise region displays a remarkable phenomenon of localisation of the processing layers. Furthermore a replica symmetric lower bound for the limiting quenched pressure of the model is obtained in a suitable region of the parameters and the replica symmetric pressure is proved to have a unique stationary point.

In this paper we study the properties of the quenched pressure of a multi-layer spin-glass model (a deep Boltzmann Machine in artificial intelligence jargon) whose pairwise interactions are allowed between spins lying in adjacent layers and not inside the same layer nor among layers at distance larger than one. We prove a theorem that bounds the quenched pressure of such a K-layer machine in terms of K Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glasses and use it to investigate its annealed region. The replica-symmetric approximation of the quenched pressure is identified and its relation to the annealed one is considered. The paper also presents some observation on the model's architectural structure related to machine learning. Since esca** the annealed region is mandatory for a meaningful training, by squeezing such region we obtain thermodynamical constraints on the form factors. Remarkably, its optimal escape is achieved by requiring the last layer to scale sub-linearly in the network size.

It includes a Gaussian representation for the partition function that is shown to considerably simplify the proofs. The solutions of the quenched diluted case and the random monomer case are explained. The presence of the attractive component of the Van der Waals potential is considered and the coexistence phase coexistence transition analysed. In particular the breakdown of the central limit theorem is illustrated at the critical point where a non Gaussian, quartic exponential distribution is found for the number of monomers centered and rescaled with the volume to the power 3/4.

Following a newly introduced approach by Rasetti and Merelli we investigate the possibility to extract topological information about the space where interacting systems are modelled. From the statistical datum of their observable quantities, like the correlation functions, we show how to reconstruct the activities of their constitutive parts which embed the topological information. The procedure is implemented on a class of polymer models on hypergraphs with hard-core interactions. We show that the model fulfils a set of iterative relations for the partition function that generalise those introduced by Heilmann and Lieb for the monomer-dimer case. After translating those relations into structural identities for the correlation functions we use them to test the precision and the robustness of the inverse problem. Finally the possible presence of a further interaction of peer-to-peer type is considered and a criterion to discover it is identified.

We study the structure of a social network of strong ties (trust network) investigating its property of connectedness versus fragmentation. To this purpose we analyse an extensive set of census data, about marrying or having children with immigrants, collected by Italian national statistical institute for all Italian municipalities from 2001 to 2011. Not using neither obtaining personal local information but only average ones, our method fully complies with privacy and confidentiality. Our findings show that large cities display the behaviour of highly fragmented trust networks where individuals face possible phenomena of alienation. Smaller cities and villages instead behave like fully connected social systems with a rich tie structure, where isolation is rare or completely absent. While confirming classical sociological theories on alienation in large urban areas our approach provides a quantitative method to test them and a predictive tool for policy makers.

Winner selection by majority, in an election between two candidates, is the only rule compatible with democratic principles. Instead, when the candidates are three or more and the voters rank candidates in order of preference, there are no univocal criteria for the selection of the winning (consensus) ranking and the outcome is known to depend sensibly on the adopted rule. Building upon XVIII century Condorcet theory, whose idea was to maximize total voter satisfaction, we propose here the addition of a new basic principle (dimension) to guide the selection: satisfaction should be distributed among voters as equally as possible. With this new criterion we identify an optimal set of rankings. They range from the Condorcet solution to the one which is the most egalitarian with respect to the voters. We show that highly egalitarian rankings have the important property to be more stable with respect to fluctuations and that classical consensus rankings (Copeland, Tideman, Schulze) often turn out to be non optimal. The new dimension we have introduced provides, when used together with that of Condorcet, a clear classification of all the possible rankings. By increasing awareness in selecting a consensus ranking our method may lead to social choices which are more egalitarian compared to those achieved by presently available voting systems.

We apply stochastic process theory to the analysis of immigrant integration. Using a unique and detailed data set from Spain, we study the relationship between local immigrant density and two social and two economic immigration quantifiers for the period 1999-2010. As opposed to the classic time-series approach, by letting immigrant density play the role of "time", and the quantifier the role of "space" it become possible to analyze the behavior of the quantifiers by means of continuous time random walks. Two classes of results are obtained. First we show that social integration quantifiers evolve following pure diffusion law, while the evolution of economic quantifiers exhibit ballistic dynamics. Second we make predictions of best and worst case scenarios taking into account large local fluctuations. Our stochastic process approach to integration lends itself to interesting forecasting scenarios which, in the hands of policy makers, have the potential to improve political responses to integration problems. For instance, estimating the standard first-passage time and maximum-span walk reveals local differences in integration performance for different immigration scenarios. Thus, by recognizing the importance of local fluctuations around national means, this research constitutes an important tool to assess the impact of immigration phenomena on municipal budgets and to set up solid multi-ethnic plans at the municipal level as immigration pressure build.

The critical point and exponents are computed and show that the model is in the mean-field ferromagnetic universality class.

The existence of the thermodynamic limit is proved for all densities values under a convexity condition on the interaction. The annealed approximation is proved to be exact under a high temperature condition. We show that the replica symmetric solution has negative entropy at low temperatures. How does immigrant integration in a country change with immigration density? Guided by a statistical mechanics perspective we propose a novel approach to this problem. The analysis focuses on classical integration quantifiers such as the percentage of jobs (temporary and permanent) given to immigrants, mixed marriages, and newborns with parents of mixed origin. We find that the average values of different quantifi?ers may exhibit either linear or non-linear growth on immigrant density and we suggest that social action, a concept identified by Max Weber, causes the observed non- linearity. Using the statistical mechanics notion of interaction to quantitatively emulate social action, a unified mathematical model for integration is proposed and it is shown to explain both growth behaviors observed. The linear theory instead, ignoring the possibility of interaction effects would underestimate the quantifiers up to 30% when immigrant densities are low, and overestimate them as much when densities are high. The capacity to quantitatively isolate different types of integration mechanisms makes our framework a suitable tool in the quest for more efficient integration policies.

A specific type of neural network, the Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM), is implemented for classification and feature detection in machine learning. RBM is characterized by separate layers of visible and hidden units, which are able to learn efficiently a generative model of the observed data. We study a "hybrid" version of RBM's, in which hidden units are analog and visible units are binary, and we show that thermodynamics of visible units are equivalent to those of a Hopfield network, in which the N visible units are the neurons and the P hidden units are the learned patterns. We apply the method of stochastic stability to derive the thermodynamics of the model, by considering a formal extension of this technique to the case of multiple sets of stored patterns, which may act as a benchmark for the study of correlated sets. Our results imply that simulating the dynamics of a Hopfield network, requiring the update of N neurons and the storage of N(N-1)/2 synapses, can be accomplished by a hybrid Boltzmann Machine, requiring the update of N+P neurons but the storage of only NP synapses. In addition, the well known glass transition of the Hopfield network has a counterpart in the Boltzmann Machine: It corresponds to an optimum criterion for selecting the relative sizes of the hidden and visible layers, resolving the trade-off between flexibility and generality of the model. The low storage phase of the Hopfield model corresponds to few hidden units and hence a overly constrained RBM, while the spin-glass phase (too many hidden units) corresponds to unconstrained RBM prone to overfitting of the observed data.

We consider both the case of pair-wise (p=2) and multiple (p>2) interactions among agents and we study the behavior of the resulting system by means of the energy-entropy scheme, typical of statistical mechanics methods. We show, analytically and numerically, that the connectivity of the social network plays a non-trivial role: while for pair-wise interactions (p=2) the connectivity weights linearly, when interactions involve contemporary a number of agents larger than two (p>2), its weight gets more and more important. As a result, when p is large, a full consensus within the system, can be reached at relatively small critical couplings with respect to the p=2 case usually analyzed, or, otherwise stated, relatively small coupling strengths among agents are sufficient to orient most of the system.

Migration phenomena and all the related issues, like integration of different social groups, are intrinsically complex problems since they strongly depend on several competitive mechanisms as economic factors, cultural differences and many others. By identifying a few essential assumptions, and using the statistical mechanics of complex systems, we propose a novel quantitative approach that provides a minimal theory for those phenomena. We show that the competitive interactions in decision making among a population of $N$ host citizens and $P$ immigrants, a bi-partite spin-glass, give rise to a "social consciousness" inside the host community in the sense of the associative memory of neural networks. The theory leads to a natural quantitative definition of migrant's "integration" inside the community. From the technical point of view this minimal picture assumes, as control parameters, only general notions like strength of the random interactions, the ratio among the two party sizes and the cultural influence. Few steps forward, toward more refined models, which include some structure on the random interaction topology (as dilution to avoid the plain mean field approach) and correlations of experiences felt among the two parties (biasing the distribution of the coupling) are discussed at the end, where we show the robustness of our approach.

In this work we review some recent development in the mathematical modelling of quantitative sociology by means of statistical mechanics. After a short pedagogical introduction to static and dynamic properties of many body systems, we develop a theory for agents interactions on random graph.
Our approach is based on describing a social network as a graph whose nodes represent agents and links between two of them stand for a reciprocal interaction. Each agent has to choose among a dichotomic option (i.e. agree or disagree) with respect to a given matter and he is driven by external influences (as media) and peer to peer interactions. These mimic the imitative behavior of the collectivity and may possibly be zero if the two nodes are disconnected. For this scenario we work out both the dynamics and the corresponding equilibria (statics). Once the 2-body theory is completely explored, we analyze, on the same random graph, a "diffusive strategic dynamics" with pairwise interactions, where detailed balance constraint is relaxed. The dynamic encodes some relevant processes which are expected to play a crucial role in the approach to equilibrium in social systems, i.e. diffusion of information and strategic choices. We observe numerically that such a dynamics reaches a well defined steady state that fulfills a "shift property": the critical interaction strength for the phase transition is lower with respect to the one expected from canonical equilibrium.
Finally, we show how the stationary states obtained with this dynamics can be described by statistical mechanics equilibria of a diluted p-spin model, for a suitable non-integer real p>2. Several implications from a sociological perspective are discussed together with some general outlooks.

In this work we compare two different random dilution of a mean field ferromagnet: the first model is built on a Bernoulli-diluted network while the second lives on a Poisson-diluted network. While it is known that the two models have in the thermodynamic limit the same free energy we investigate on the structural constraints that the two models must fulfill. We rigorously derive for each model the set of identities for the multi-overlaps distribution using different methods for the two dilutions: constraints in the former model are obtained by studying the consequences of the self-averaging of the internal energy density, while in the latter are obtained by a stochastic-stability technique. Finally we prove that the identities emerging in the two models are the same, showing "robustness" of the ferromagnetic properties of diluted networks with respect to the details of dilution.

We propose a model for the dynamics of a social system, which includes diffusive effects and a biased rule for spin-flips, reproducing the effect of strategic choices. This model is able to mimic some phenomena taking place during marketing or political campaigns. Using a cost function based on the Ising model defined on the typical quenched interaction environments for social systems (Erdos-Renyi graph, small-world and scale-free networks), we find, by numerical simulations, that a stable stationary state is reached, and we compare the final state to the one obtained with standard dynamics, by means of total magnetization and magnetic susceptibility. Our results show that the diffusive strategic dynamics features a critical interaction parameter strictly lower than the standard one. We discuss the relevance of our findings in social systems.

A class of simple mean field discrete models is introduced and discussed both from the theoretical and phenomenological point of view. We propose a parameter evaluation procedure and test it by fitting our model against three families of data coming from different cases: the estimated interaction parameters are found to have similar positive values establishing a quantitative confirmation of the peer imitation behavior found in social psychology. Moreover all the values of the interaction parameters belong to the phase transition regime suggesting its possible role in the study of social systems.
