High-momentum two-particle correlations are a useful tool for studying jet-quenching effects in the quark-gluon plasma. Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $Δ_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $Δφ$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These results better quantify how the yield of low-$p_T$ associated hadrons is enhanced at wide angle, which is crucial for studying energy loss as well as medium-response effects.

The multinucleon transfer (MNT) reaction approach was successfully employed for the first time to measure the isomeric ratios (IRs) of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$) isomer and its (9/2$^+$) ground state at the IGISOL facility using a 945 MeV $^{136}$Xe beam im**ed on $^{209}$Bi and $^{\rm nat}$Pb targets. The dominant production of isomers compared to the corresponding ground states was consistently revealed in the $α$-decay spectra. Deduced IR of $^{211}$Po populated through the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb reaction was found to enhance $\approx$1.8-times than observed for $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. State-of-the-art Langevin-type model calculations have been utilized to estimate the spin distribution of an MNT residue. The computations qualitatively corroborate with the considerable increase in IRs of $^{211}$Po produced from $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb compared to $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi. Theoretical investigations indicate a weak influence of target spin on IRs. The enhancement of the $^{211}$Po isomer in the $^{136}$Xe+$^{\rm nat}$Pb over $^{136}$Xe+$^{209}$Bi can be attributed to the different proton ($p$)-transfer production routes. Estimations demonstrate an increment in the angular momentum transfer, favorable for isomer production, with increasing projectile energy. Comparative analysis indicates the two entrance channel parameters, projectile mass and $p$-transfer channels, strongly influencing the population of the high-spin isomer of $^{211}$Po (25/2$^+$). This is the first experimental and theoretical investigation on the IRs of nuclei produced via different channels of MNT reactions, with the latter quantitatively underestimating the former by a factor of two.

At the FRS Ion Catcher (FRS-IC), projectile and fission fragments are produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, energy-bunched, slowed down, and thermalized in the ultra-pure helium gas-filled cryogenic stop** cell (CSC). Thermalized nuclei are extracted from the CSC using a combination of DC and RF electric fields and gas flow. This CSC also serves as the prototype CSC for the Super-FRS, where exotic nuclei will be produced at unprecedented rates making it possible to go towards the extremes of the nuclear chart. Therefore, it is essential to efficiently extract thermalized exotic nuclei from the CSC under high beam rate conditions, in order to use the rare exotic nuclei which come as cocktail beams. The extraction efficiency dependence on the intensity of the im**ing beam into the CSC was studied with a primary beam of 238U and its fragments. Tests were done with two different versions of the DC electrode structure inside the cryogenic chamber, the standard 1 m long and a short 0.5 m long DC electrode. In contrast to the rate capability of 10^4 ions/s with the long DC electrode, results show no extraction efficiency loss up to the rate of 2x10^5 ions/s with the new short DC electrode. This order of magnitude increase of the rate capability paves the way for new experiments at the FRS-IC, including exotic nuclei studies with in-cell multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The results further validate the design concept of the CSC for the Super-FRS, which was developed to effectively manage beams of even higher intensities.

Direct mass measurements of neutron-deficient nuclides around the $N=50$ shell closure below $^{100}$Sn were performed at the FRS Ion Catcher (FRS-IC) at GSI, Germany. The nuclei were produced by projectile fragmentation of $^{124}$Xe, separated in the fragment separator FRS and delivered to the FRS-IC. The masses of 14 ground states and two isomers were measured with relative mass uncertainties down to $1\times 10^{-7}$ using the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer of the FRS-IC, including the first direct mass measurements of $^{98}$Cd and $^{97}$Rh. A new $Q_\mathrm{EC} = 5437\pm67$ keV was obtained for $^{98}$Cd, resulting in a summed Gamow-Teller (GT) strength for the five observed transitions ($0^+\longrightarrow1^+$) as $B(\text{GT})=2.94^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$. Investigation of this result in state-of-the-art shell model approaches sheds light into a better understanding of the GT transitions in even-even isotones at $N=50$. The excitation energy of the long-lived isomeric state in $^{94}$Rh was determined for the first time to be $293\pm 21$ keV. This, together with the shell model calculations, allows the level ordering in $^{94}$Rh to be understood.

In 2D simply connected domains, we prove that if the magnetic field and velocity field are never commensurate, the only possible domain for any such equilibria is a disk, and the velocity and magnetic field are circular. We give examples of non-symmetric equilibria occupying a domain of any shape by imposing an external magnetic field generated by a singular current sheet charge distribution (external coils). Some results carry over to 3D axisymmetric solutions. These results highlight the importance of external magnetic fields for the existence of asymmetric equilibria.

A very intense gamma beam of the Gamma Factory facility proposed at CERN can be used to generate radioactive ion beams (RIBs) with high production yields and study the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei. The radioactive nuclides are generated via photo-fission in several actinide targets and thermalized in high-purity cryogenic helium, filling a gas cell which is enclosing the targets. Electric fields are used to extract heavy ions and form RIBs which can be sent to various selection and measurement stations. Estimates for the production and extraction yields of exotic neutron-rich nuclei with such a setup are provided. A study of the impact of space charge, build-up inside the gas cell, on the extraction properties is presented and it is demonstrated that the beam needs to be chopped for achieving optimal extraction yields.

We consider the limit of vanishing Debye length for ionic diffusion in fluids, described by the Nernst-Planck-Navier-Stokes system. In the asymptotically stable cases of blocking (vanishing normal flux) and uniform selective (special Dirichlet) boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, we prove that the ionic charge density $ρ$ converges in time to zero in the interior of the domain, in the limit of vanishing Debye length ($ε\to 0$). For the unstable regime of Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, we prove bounds that are uniform in time and $ε$. We also consider electroneutral boundary conditions, for which we prove that electroneutrality $ρ\to 0$ is achieved at any fixed $ε> 0$, exponentially fast in time in $L^p$, for all $1\le p<\infty$. The results hold for two oppositely charged ionic species with arbitrary ionic diffusivities, in bounded domains with smooth boundaries.

Mass measurements of the $^{69}$As, $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes, produced via fragmentation of a $^{124}$Xe primary beam at the FRS at GSI, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with an unprecedented mass resolving power of almost 1,000,000. For the $^{69}$As isotope, this is the first direct mass measurement. A mass uncertainty of 22 keV was achieved with only 10 events. For the $^{70}$Se isotope, a mass uncertainty of 2.6 keV was obtained, corresponding to a relative accuracy of $δ$m/m = 4.0$\times 10^{-8}$, with less than 500 events. The masses of the $^{71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes were measured with an uncertainty of 23 and 16 keV, respectively. Our results for the $^{70,71}$Se and $^{71}$Br isotopes agree with the 2016 Atomic Mass Evaluation, and our result for the $^{69}$As isotope resolves the discrepancy between previous indirect measurements. We measured also the mass of $^{14}$N$^{15}$N$^{40}$Ar (A=69) with a relative accuracy of $δ$m/m = 1.7$\times 10^{-8}$, the highest yet achieved with a MR-TOF-MS. Our results show that the measured restrengthening of the proton-neutron interaction ($δ$V$_{pn}$) for odd-odd nuclei at the N=Z line above Z=29 (recently extended to Z=37) is hardly evident at N-Z=2, and not evident at N-Z=4. Nevertheless, detailed structure of $δ$V$_{pn}$ along the N-Z=2 and N-Z=4 lines, confirmed by our mass measurements, may provide a hint regarding the ongoing $\approx$500 keV discrepancy in the mass value of the $^{70}$Br isotope, which prevents including it in the world average of ${Ft}$-value for superallowed 0$^+\rightarrow$ 0$^+$ $β$ decays. The reported work sets the stage for mass measurements with the FRS Ion Catcher of nuclei at and beyond the N=Z line in the same region of the nuclear chart, including the $^{70}$Br isotope.

The solutions are also `nearly' quasisymmetric. The primary idea is, given a desired quasisymmetry direction $ξ$, to change the smooth structure on space so that the vector field $ξ$ is Killing for the new metric and construct $ξ$--symmetric solutions of the magnetohydrostatic equations on that background by solving a generalized Grad-Shafranov equation. If $ξ$ is close to a symmetry of Euclidean space, then these are solutions on flat space up to a small forcing.

We prove that the system has global smooth solutions for arbitrary smooth data: arbitrary positive Dirichlet boundary conditions for the ionic concentrations, arbitrary Dirichlet boundary conditions for the potential, arbitrary positive initial concentrations, and arbitrary regular divergence-free initial velocities. The result holds for any positive diffusivities of ions, in bounded domains with smooth boundary in three space dimensions, in the case of two ionic species, coupled to Stokes equations for the fluid. The result also holds in the case of Navier-Stokes coupling, if the velocity is regular. The global smoothness of solutions is also true for arbitrarily many ionic species, if all their diffusivities are the same.

We prove global existence of solutions in bounded domains in three dimensions with either blocking (no-flux) or uniform selective (special Dirichlet) boundary conditions for ion concentrations. The global existence of strong solutions is established for initial conditions that are sufficiently small perturbations of steady state solutions. The solutions remain close to equilibrium in strong norms. The main two steps of the proof are (1) the decay of the sum of relative entropies (Kullback-Leibler divergences) and (2) the control of $L^2$ norms of deviations by the sum of relative entropies.

Gas-filled stop** cells are used at accelerator laboratories for the thermalization of high-energy radioactive ion beams. Common challenges of many stop** cells are a high molecular background of extracted ions and limitations of extraction efficiency due to space-charge effects. At the FRS Ion Catcher at GSI, a new technique for removal of ionized molecules prior to their extraction out of the stop** cell has been developed. This technique utilizes the RF carpet for the separation of atomic ions from molecular contaminant ions through their difference in ion mobility. Results from the successful implementation and test during an experiment with a 600~MeV/u $^{124}$Xe primary beam are presented. Suppression of molecular contaminants by three orders of magnitude has been demonstrated. Essentially background-free measurement conditions with less than $1~\%$ of background events within a mass-to-charge range of 25 u/e have been achieved. The technique can also be used to reduce the space-charge effects at the extraction nozzle and in the downstream beamline, thus ensuring high efficiency of ion transport and highly-accurate measurements under space-charge-free conditions.

Specifically, certain Liouville-type theorems are established which show that suitable steady solutions with no stagnation points occupying a two-dimensional periodic channel, or axisymmetric solutions in (hollowed out) cylinder, must have certain structural symmetries. It is additionally shown that such solutions can be deformed to occupy domains which are themselves small perturbations of the base domain. As application of the general scheme, Arnol'd stable solutions are shown to be structurally stable.

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au$+$Au, $d$$+$Au and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, for direct photon $p_T$ from 5--12 GeV/$c$, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in $d$$+$Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au$+$Au compared to $p$$+$$p$ and $d$$+$Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au$+$Au increases to an excess over the yield in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron $p_T$ and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

We give a small data global well-posedness result for an incompressible Oldroyd-B model with wave number dissipation in the equation of stress tensor. The result is uniform in solvent Reynolds numbers, and requires only fractional wave-number dependent dissipation $(-Δ)^β$, $β\ge \frac{1}{2}$ in the added stress.

Abstract:
We obtain estimates near the boundary for the critical dissipative SQG equation in bounded domains, with the square root of the Dirichlet Laplacian dissipation. We prove that global regularity up to the boundary holds if and only if a certain quantitative vanishing of the scalar at the boundary is maintained.

Here we report on the characterization of one of the large-volume LaBr$_{3}$:Ce detectors for the ELIGANT project at ELI-NP. The main focus of this work is the response function for high-energy $γ$ rays of such detectors. In particular, we compare a selection of unfolding methods to resolve small structures in $γ$-ray spectra with high-energies. Three methods have been compared using $γ$-ray spectra with energies up to 12 MeV obtained in an experiment at the 3 MV Tandetron\texttrademark\ facility at IFIN-HH. The results show that the iterative unfolding approach gives the best qualitative reproduction of the emitted $γ$-ray spectrum. Furthermore, the correlation fluctuations in high-energy regime from the iterative method are two orders of magnitude smaller than when using the matrix inversion approach with second derivative regularization. In addition, the iterative method is computationally faster as it does not contain large matrix inversions. The matrix inversion method does, however, give more consistent results over the full energy range and in the low-statistics limit. Our conclusion is that the performance of the iterative approach makes it well suitable for semi-online analysis of experimental data. These results will be important, both for experiments with the ELIGANT setup, and for on-line diagnostics of the energy spread of the $γ$-ray beam which is under implementation at ELI-NP.

A consequence is that vorticity distribution functions converge to their inviscid counterparts. As a byproduct of the proof, we establish continuity of the Euler solution map for Yudovich solutions in the $L^p$ vorticity topology. The main tool in these proofs is a uniformly controlled loss of regularity property of the linear transport by Yudovich solutions. Our results provide a partial foundation for the Miller--Robert statistical equilibrium theory of vortices as it applies to slightly viscous fluids.

We obtain a series of global well-posedness results for state laws in previously uncovered cases including $p(ρ) = c_p ρ$. As an application we prove global well-posedness of collective behavior models with pressure arising from agent-based Cucker-Smale system.

A novel method for simultaneous measurement of masses, Q-values, isomer excitation energies, half-lives and decay branching ratios of exotic nuclei has been demonstrated. The method includes first use of a stop** cell as an ion trap, combining containment of precursors and decay-recoils for variable durations in a cryogenic stop** cell (CSC), and afterwards the identification and counting of them by a multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS). Feasibility has been established by recording the decay and growth of $^{216}$Po and $^{212}$Pb (alpha decay) and of $^{119m2}$Sb (t$_{1/2}$ = 850$\pm$90 ms) and $^{119g}$Sb (isomer transition), obtaining half-lives and branching ratios consistent with literature values. Hardly any non-nuclear-decay losses have been observed in the CSC for up to $\sim$10 seconds, which exhibits its extraordinary cleanliness. For $^{119}$Sb, this is the first direct measurement of the ground and second isomeric state masses, resolving the discrepancies in previous excitation energy data. These results pave the way for the measurement of branching ratios of exotic nuclei with multiple decay channels.

Mass measurements of fission and projectile fragments, produced via $^{238}$U and $^{124}$Xe primary beams, have been performed with the multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) of the FRS Ion Catcher with a mass resolving powers (FWHM) up to 410,000 and an uncertainty of $6\cdot 10^{-8}$. The nuclides were produced and separated in-flight with the fragment separator FRS at 300 to 1000 MeV/u and thermalized in a cryogenic stop** cell. The data-analysis procedure was developed to determine with highest accuracy the mass values and the corresponding uncertainties for the most challenging conditions: down to a few events in a spectrum and overlap** distributions, characterized only by a broader common peak shape. With this procedure, the resolution of low-lying isomers is increased by a factor of up to three compared to standard data analysis. The ground-state masses of 31 short-lived nuclides of 15 different elements with half-lives down to 17.9~ms and count rates as low as 11 events per nuclide were determined. This is the first direct mass measurement for seven nuclides. The excitation energies and the isomer-to-ground state ratios of six isomeric states with excitation energies down to about 280~keV were measured. For nuclides with known mass values, the average relative deviation from the literature values is $(2.9 \pm 6.2) \cdot 10^{-8}$. The measured two-neutron separation energies and their slopes near and at the N=126 and Z=82 shell closures indicate a strong element-dependent binding energy of the first neutron above the closed proton shell Z=82. The experimental results deviate strongly from the theoretical predictions, especially for N=126 and N=127.

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4<p_T<3$ GeV/$c$) direct-photon yields from Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=39 and 62.4 GeV. For both beam energies the direct-photon yields are substantially enhanced with respect to expectations from prompt processes, similar to the yields observed in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200. Analyzing the photon yield as a function of the experimental observable $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ reveals that the low-momentum ($>$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_γ^{\rm dir}/dη$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/dη)^α$ with $α{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield.

We have measured direct photons for $p_T<5~$GeV/$c$ in minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events at midrapidity for Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The $e^{+}e^{-}$ contribution from quasi-real direct virtual photons has been determined as an excess over the known hadronic contributions in the $e^{+}e^{-}$ mass distribution. A clear enhancement of photons over the binary scaled $p$$+$$p$ fit is observed for $p_T<4$ GeV/$c$ in Cu$+$Cu data. The $p_T$ spectra are consistent with the Au$+$Au data covering a similar number of participants. The inverse slopes of the exponential fits to the excess after subtraction of the $p$$+$$p$ baseline are 285$\pm$53(stat)$\pm$57(syst)~MeV/$c$ and 333$\pm$72(stat)$\pm$45(syst)~MeV/$c$ for minimum bias and 0\%--40\% most central events, respectively. The rapidity density, $dN/dy$, of photons demonstrates the same power law as a function of $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ observed in Au$+$Au at the same collision energy.

We consider a class of one dimensional compressible systems with degenerate diffusion coefficients. We establish the fact that the solutions remain smooth as long as the diffusion coefficients do not vanish, and give local and global existence results. The models include the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations, shallow water systems and the lubrication approximation of slender jets. In all these models the momentum equation is forced by the gradient of a solution-dependent potential: the active potential. The method of proof uses the Bresch-Desjardins entropy and the analysis of the evolution of the active potential.

We present measurements of azimuthal correlations of charged hadron pairs in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV Au$+$Au collisions for the trigger and associated particle transverse-momentum ranges of $1<p_T^t<10$~GeV/$c$ and $0.5<p_T^a<10$~GeV/$c$. After subtraction of an underlying event using a model that includes higher-order azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$, $v_3$, and $v_4$, the away-side yield of the highest trigger-\pt ($p_T^t>4$~GeV/$c$) correlations is suppressed compared to that of correlations measured in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. At the lowest associated particle $p_T$ ($0.5<p_T^a<1$ GeV/$c$), the away-side shape and yield are modified relative to those in $p$$+$$p$ collisions. These observations are consistent with the scenario of radiative-jet energy loss. For the low-$p_T$ trigger correlations ($2<p_T^t<4$ GeV/$c$), a finite away-side yield exists and we explore the dependence of the shape of the away-side within the context of an underlying-event model. Correlations are also studied differentially versus event-plane angle $Ψ_2$ and $Ψ_3$. The angular correlations show an asymmetry when selecting the sign of the difference between the trigger-particle azimuthal angle and the $Ψ_2$ event plane. This asymmetry and the measured suppression of the pair yield out of plane is consistent with a path-length-dependent energy loss. No $Ψ_3$ dependence can be resolved within experimental uncertainties.

We discuss a lubrication approximation model of the interface between two immiscible fluids in a Hele-Shaw cell, derived in \cite{CDGKSZ93} and widely studied since. The model consists of a single one dimensional evolution equation for the thickness $2h = 2h(x,t)$ of a thin neck of fluid, \[ \partial_t h + \partial_x( h \, \partial_x^3 h) = 0\, , \] for $x\in (-1,1)$ and $t\ge 0$. The boundary conditions fix the neck height and the pressure jump: \[ h(\pm 1,t) = 1, \qquad \partial_{x}^2 h(\pm 1,t) = P>0. \] We prove that starting from smooth and positive $h$, as long as $h(x,t) >0$, for $x\in [-1,1], \; t\in [0,T]$, no singularity can arise in the solution up to time $T$. As a consequence, we prove for any $P>2$ and any smooth and positive initial datum that the solution pinches off in either finite or infinite time, i.e., $\inf_{[-1,1]\times[0,T_*)} h = 0$, for some $T_* \in (0,\infty]$. These facts have been long anticipated on the basis of numerical and theoretical studies.

We prove that any weak space-time $L^2$ vanishing viscosity limit of a sequence of strong solutions of Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain of ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ satisfies the Euler equation if the solutions' local enstrophies are uniformly bounded. We also prove that $t-a.e.$ weak $L^2$ inviscid limits of solutions of 3D Navier-Stokes equations in bounded domains are weak solutions of the Euler equation if they locally satisfy a scaling property of their second order structure function. The conditions imposed are far away from boundaries, and wild solutions of Euler equations are not a priori excluded in the limit.

Abstract:
We prove local well-posedness for the inviscid surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation in bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^2$. When fractional Dirichlet Laplacian dissipation is added, global existence of strong solutions is obtained for small data for critical and supercritical cases. Global existence of strong solutions with arbitrary data is obtained in the subcritical cases.

The $e^+e^-$ pair yield from $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ is separated by exploiting a double differential fit done simultaneously in dielectron invariant mass and $p_T$. We used three different event generators, {\sc pythia}, {\sc mc@nlo}, and {\sc powheg}, to simulate the $e^+e^-$ spectra from $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ production. The data can be well described by all three generators within the detector acceptance. However, when using the generators to extrapolate to $4π$, significant differences are observed for the total cross section. These difference are less pronounced for $b\bar{b}$ than for $c\bar{c}$. The same model dependence was observed in already published $d$+$A$ data. The $p$+$p$ data are also directly compared with $d$+$A$ data in mass and $p_T$, and within the statistical accuracy no nuclear modification is seen.

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured 2nd and 3rd order Fourier coefficients of the azimuthal distributions of direct photons emitted at midrapidity in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV for various collision centralities. Combining two different analysis techniques, results were obtained in the transverse momentum range of $0.4<p_{T}<4.0$ GeV/$c$. At low $p_T$ the second-order coefficients, $v_2$, are similar to the ones observed in hadrons. Third order coefficients, $v_3$, are nonzero and almost independent of centrality. These new results on $v_2$ and $v_3$, combined with previously published results on yields, are compared to model calculations that provide yields and asymmetries in the same framework. Those models are challenged to explain simultaneously the observed large yield and large azimuthal anisotropies.

Measurements of the fractional momentum loss ($S_{\rm loss}\equivδp_T/p_T$) of high-transverse-momentum-identified hadrons in heavy ion collisions are presented. Using $π^0$ in Au$+$Au and Cu$+$Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 200 GeV measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and and charged hadrons in Pb$+$Pb collisions measured by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, we studied the scaling properties of $S_{\rm loss}$ as a function of a number of variables: the number of participants, $N_{\rm part}$, the number of quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the charged-particle density, $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, and the Bjorken energy density times the equilibration time, $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$. We find that the $p_T$ where $S_{\rm loss}$ has its maximum, varies both with centrality and collision energy. Above the maximum, $S_{\rm loss}$ tends to follow a power-law function with all four scaling variables. The data at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$=200 GeV and 2.76 TeV, for sufficiently high particle densities, have a common scaling of $S_{\rm loss}$ with $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$ and $\varepsilon_{\rm Bj}τ_{0}$, lending insight on the physics of parton energy loss.

Centrality-dependent distributions at midrapidity are presented in terms of the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, and the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{q{\rm p}}$. For all $A$$+$$A$ collisions down to $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=7.7$ GeV, it is observed that the midrapidity data are better described by scaling with $N_{q{\rm p}}$ than scaling with $N_{\rm part}$. Also presented are estimates of the Bjorken energy density, $\varepsilon_{\rm BJ}$, and the ratio of $dE_T/dη$ to $dN_{\rm ch}/dη$, the latter of which is seen to be constant as a function of centrality for all systems.

We present the first measurement of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in high-multiplicity $^{3}$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. Two-particle correlations, where the particles have a large separation in pseudorapidity, are compared in $^{3}$He$+$Au and in $p$$+$$p$ collisions and indicate that collective effects dominate the second and third Fourier components for the correlations observed in the $^{3}$He$+$Au system. The collective behavior is quantified in terms of elliptic $v_2$ and triangular $v_3$ anisotropy coefficients measured with respect to their corresponding event planes. The $v_2$ values are comparable to those previously measured in $d$$+$Au collisions at the same nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy. Comparison with various theoretical predictions are made, including to models where the hot spots created by the impact of the three $^{3}$He nucleons on the Au nucleus expand hydrodynamically to generate the triangular flow. The agreement of these models with data may indicate the formation of low-viscosity quark-gluon plasma even in these small collision systems.

We consider the 2D Muskat equation for the interface between two constant density fluids in an incompressible porous medium, with velocity given by Darcy's law. We establish that as long as the slope of the interface between the two fluids remains bounded and uniformly continuous, the solution remains regular. The proofs exploit the nonlocal nonlinear parabolic nature of the equations through a series of nonlinear lower bounds for nonlocal operators. These are used to deduce that as long as the slope of the interface remains uniformly bounded, the curvature remains bounded. The nonlinear bounds then allow us to obtain local existence for arbitrarily large initial data in the class $W^{2,p}$, $1<p\leq \infty$. We provide furthermore a global regularity result for small initial data: if the initial slope of the interface is sufficiently small, there exists a unique solution for all time.
