Abstract:
A non-invasive functional-brain-imaging system based on optically-pumped-magnetometers (OPM) is presented. The OPM-based magnetoencephalography (MEG) system features 20 OPM channels conforming to the subject's scalp. A non-invasive functional-brain-imaging system based on optically-pumped-magnetometers (OPM) is presented. The OPM-based magnetoencephalography (MEG) system features 20 OPM channels conforming to the subject's scalp. Due to proximity (12 mm) of the OPM channels to the brain, it is anticipated that this MEG system offers an enhanced spatial resolution as it can capture finer spatial features compared to traditional MEG systems employing superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). We have conducted two MEG experiments on three subjects: somatosensory evoked magnetic field (SEF) and auditory evoked magnetic field (AEF) using our OPM-based MEG system and a commercial SQUID-based MEG system. We have cross validated the robustness of our system by calculating the distance between the location of the equivalent current dipole (ECD) yielded by our OPM-based MEG system and the ECD location calculated by the commercial SQUID-based MEG system. We achieved sub-centimeter accuracy for both SEF and AEF responses in all three subjects.

Abstract:
We describe a multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG) system that uses optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) to sense the magnetic fields of the human brain. The system consists of an array of 20 OPM channels conforming to the human subject's head, a person-sized magnetic shield containing the array and the human subject, a laser system to drive the OPM array, and various control and data acquis…

We describe a multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG) system that uses optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) to sense the magnetic fields of the human brain. The system consists of an array of 20 OPM channels conforming to the human subject's head, a person-sized magnetic shield containing the array and the human subject, a laser system to drive the OPM array, and various control and data acquisitions systems. We conducted two MEG experiments: auditory evoked magnetic field (AEF) and somatosensory evoked magnetic field (SEF), on three healthy male subjects, using both our OPM array and a 306-channel Elekta-Neuromag superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) MEG system. The described OPM array measures the tangential components of the magnetic field as opposed to the radial component measured by all SQUID-based MEG systems. Herein we compare the results of the OPM- and SQUID-based MEG systems on the auditory and somatosensory data recorded in the same individuals on both systems.

Abstract:
We present results of spectral and timing analysis based on 11 RXTE PCA/HEXTE observations of the microquasar XTE J1550-564 during its last outburst in January 2002. The observed behaviour is comparable to most Black-Hole Candidates in the low/hard state. This is unlike the 1998-99 outburst, when it showed a much more complex feature, probably because of the higher luminosity. For each of the 11…

For each of the 11 observations we extracted energy spectra and power density spectra, finding typical features of a low/hard state.

Abstract:
We present the results of the analysis of 11 RXTE/PCA observations of the January 2002 outburst of the black-hole transient XTE J1550-564. The outburst was rather short, with an e-folding time of ~11 days in the PCA band 3-25 keV. The source was seen in an extreme low/hard state. The energy spectra could be fitted with a power law slightly steepening (Gamma ~ 1.4 to ~1.5) in time, with a high-en…

The energy spectra could be fitted with a power law slightly steepening (Gamma ~ 1.4 to ~1.5) in time, with a high-energy cutoff decreasing from ~300 keV to ~100 keV and some additional features between 6 and 7 keV, while the 3-150 keV flux decreased by a factor of 17. The power spectra were fitted with two broad Lorentzian components, whose characteristic frequencies decreased with the source flux, and whose fractional rms contribution was rather constant. The timing parameters derived can be identified with those observed in other systems. These results show that, although during previous, more luminous, outbursts, a very complex behavior was observed, at low luminosities XTE J1550-564 behaves in a way comparable to most Black-Hole Candidates.
