In his Ph.D. thesis, Michal Szabados conjectured that for a not fully periodic configuration with a minimal periodic decomposition the nonexpansive lines are exactly the lines that contain a period for some periodic configuration in such decomposition. In this paper, we study Szabados's conjecture. First, we show that we may consider a minimal periodic decomposition where each periodic configuration is defined on a finite alphabet. Then we prove that Szabados's conjecture holds for a wide class of configurations, which includes all not fully periodic low convex pattern complexity configurations.

Nivat's conjecture is a famous open problem in symbolic dynamics. The existence of nonexpansive lines that when endowed with a given orientation are one-sided nonexpansive directions is at the heart of some advances. In his Ph.D. thesis, Michal Szabados conjectured that for a minimal periodic decomposition the nonexpansive lines are exactly the lines that contain a period of some periodic configuration in such decomposition. In this paper, we provide conditions where (i) Szabados's conjecture holds and (ii) a given line is nonexpansive if and only if the same line endowed with a given orientation is a one-sided nonexpansive direction. As a corollary of our main result, we get that Nivat's conjecture holds for low convex complexity configurations if and only if it holds for low convex complexity configurations satisfying (i) and (ii).

Abstract:
Since techniques used to address the Nivat's conjecture usually relies on Morse-Hedlund Theorem, an improved version of this classical result may mean a new step towards a proof for the conjecture. In this paper, considering an alphabetical version of the Morse-Hedlund Theorem, we show that, for a configuration $η\in A^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$ that contains all letters of a given finite alphabet $A$, if it…

In this paper, considering an alphabetical version of the Morse-Hedlund Theorem, we show that, for a configuration $η\in A^{\mathbb{Z}^2}$ that contains all letters of a given finite alphabet $A$, if its complexity with respect to a quasi-regular set $\mathcal{S} \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$ (a finite set whose convex hull on $\mathbb{R}^2$ is described by pairs of edges with identical size) is bounded from above by $\frac{1}{2}|\mathcal{S}|+|A|-1$, then $η$ is periodic.

Background: Exclusive two-nucleon knockout after electroexcitation of nuclei ($A(e,e'NN)$ in brief) is considered to be a primary source of information about short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei. For a proper interpretation of the data, final-state interactions (FSI) need to be theoretically controlled.
Purpose: Our goal is to quantify the role of FSI effects in exclusive $A(e,e'pN)$ reactions for four target nuclei representative for the whole mass region. Our focus is on processes that are SRC driven. We investigate the role of FSI for two characteristic detector setups corresponding with a "small" and "large" coverage of the available phase space.
Results: The transparency $T^{pN}_{A}$, defined as the ratio of exclusive $(e,e'pN)$ cross sections on nuclei to those on "free" nucleon pairs, drops from $ 0.2-0.3 $ for $^{12}$C to $0.04-0.07$ for $^{208}$Pb. For all considered kinematics, the mass dependence of the $T^{pN}_{A}$ can be captured by the power law $T^{pN}_{A} \propto A^{- λ}$ with $ 0.4 \lesssim λ\lesssim 0.5 $. Apart from an overall reduction factor, we find that FSI only modestly affects the distinct features of SRC-driven $A(e,e'pN)$ which are dictated by the c.m. distribution of close-proximity pairs.
Conclusion: The SCX mechanisms represent a relatively small (order of a few percent) contribution of SRC-driven $A(e,e'pN)$ processes. The mass dependence of FSI effects in exclusive $A(e,e'pN)$ can be captured in a robust power law and is in agreement with the predictions obtained in a toy model.

Abstract:
The nuclear mass dependence of the number of short-range correlated (SRC) proton-proton (pp) and proton-neutron (pn) pairs in nuclei is a sensitive probe of the dynamics of short-range pairs in the ground state of atomic nuclei. This work presents an analysis of electroinduced single-proton and two-proton knockout measurements off 12C, 27Al, 56Fe, and 208Pb in kinematics dominated by scattering off SRC pairs. The nuclear mass dependence of the observed A(e,e'pp)/12C(e,e'pp) cross-section ratios and the extracted number of pp- and pn-SRC pairs are much softer than the mass dependence of the total number of possible pairs. This is in agreement with a physical picture of SRC affecting predominantly nucleon-nucleon pairs in a nodeless relative-S state of the mean-field basis.

We investigate the factorization properties of the exclusive electroinduced two-nucleon knockout reaction $A(e,e'pN)$. A factorized expression for the cross section is derived and the conditions for factorization are studied. The $A(e,e'pN)$ cross section is shown to be proportional to the conditional center-of-mass (c.m.) momentum distribution for close-proximity pairs in a state with zero relative orbital momentum and zero radial quantum number. The width of this conditional c.m. momentum distribution is larger than the one corresponding with the full c.m. momentum distribution. It is shown that the final-state interactions (FSIs) only moderately affect the shape of the factorization function for the $A(e,e'pN)$ cross sections. Another prediction of the proposed factorization is that the mass dependence of the $A(e,e'pp)$ $[A(e,e'pn)]$ cross sections is much softer than $\frac{Z(Z-1)}{2}$ $[NZ]$.
