Water-soluble sacrificial layers based on epitaxially-grown, single crystalline (Ca, Sr, Ba)3Al2O6 layer are widely used for creating free-standing perovskite oxide membranes. However, obtaining these sacrificial layers with intricate stoichiometry remains a challenge, especially for molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In this study, we demonstrate the hybrid MBE growth of epitaxial, single crystalline SrTiO3 films using a solution processed, amorphous SrCa2Al2O6 sacrificial layer onto SrTiO3 (001) substrates. Prior to the growth, the oxygen plasma exposure was used to first create the crystalline SrCa2Al2O6 layer with well-defined surface crystallinity. Utilizing reflection high energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, we observe an atomic layer-by-layer growth of epitaxial, single crystalline SrTiO3 film on the SrCa2Al2O6 layer with atomically smooth surfaces. The SrCa2Al2O6 layer was subsequently dissolved in de-ionized water to create free-standing SrTiO3 membranes that were transferred onto a metal-coated Si wafer. Membranes created with Sr-deficiency revealed ferroelectric-like behavior measured using piezo force microscopy whereas stoichiometric films remained paraelectric-like. These findings underscore the viability of using ex-situ deposited amorphous SrCa2Al2O6 for epitaxial, single crystalline growth, as well as the importance of point defects in determining the ferroic properties in membranes.

Piezoresponse Force Microscopy is a powerful but delicate nanoscale technique that measures the mechanical response resulting from the application of a highly localized electric field. Though mechanical response is normally due to piezoelectricity, other physical phenomena, especially electrostatic interaction, can contribute to the signal read. We address this problematic through the use of longer ultra-stiff probes providing state of the art sensitivity, with the lowest electrostatic interaction and avoiding working in high frequency regime. In order to find this solution we develop a theoretical description addressing the effects of electrostatic contributions in the total cantilever vibration and its quantification for different setups. The theory is subsequently tested in a Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) crystal, a sample with well-defined 0deg and 180deg domains, using different commercial available conductive tips. We employ the theoretical description to compare the electrostatic contribution effects into the total phase recorded. Through experimental data our description is corroborated for each of the tested commercially available probes. We propose that a larger probe length can be a solution to avoid electrostatic forces, so the cantilever-sample electrostatic interaction is reduced. For hard oxide samples we propose an ultra-stiff cantilever which avoids the use of high frequency voltage but still diminishing electrostatic forces. Our proposed commercially available solution have great implications into avoiding artifacts while studying soft biological samples, multiferroic oxides, and thin film ferroelectric materials and it opens a new window into tip engineering.

Conditor is a software tool which works with textual documents containing historical information. The purpose of this work two-fold: firstly to show the validity of the developed engine to correctly identify and label the entities of the universe of discourse with a labelled-combined XTM-DITA model. Secondly to explain the improvements achieved in the information retrieval process thanks to the use of a object-oriented database (JPOX) as well as its integration into the Lucene-type database search process to not only accomplish more accurate searches, but to also help the future development of a recommender system. We finish with a brief demo in a 3D-graph of the results of the aforementioned search.
