Selective linear segmentation for detecting relevant parameter changes
Abstract: Change-point processes are one flexible approach to model long time series. We propose a method to uncover which model parameter truly vary when a change-point is detected. Given a set of breakpoints, we use a penalized likelihood approach to select the best set of parameters that changes over time and we prove that the penalty function leads to a consistent selection of the true model. Estimation… ▽ More

Genetic algorithm with a Bayesian approach for the detection of multiple points of change of time series of counting exceedances of specific thresholds
Abstract: Although the applications of Non-Homogeneous Poisson Processes to model and study the threshold overshoots of interest in different time series of measurements have proven to provide good results, they needed to be complemented with an efficient and automatic diagnostic technique to establish the location of the change-points, which, when taken into account, make the estimated model fit poorly in… ▽ More

On the Identifiability of Phylogenetic Networks under a Pseudolikelihood model
Abstract: The Tree of Life is the graphical structure that represents the evolutionary process from single-cell organisms at the origin of life to the vast biodiversity we see today. Reconstructing this tree from genomic sequences is challenging due to the variety of biological forces that shape the signal in the data, and many of those processes like incomplete lineage sorting and hybridization can produce… ▽ More

Compound Dirichlet Processes
Abstract: The compound Poisson process and the Dirichlet process are the pillar structures of Renewal theory and Bayesian nonparametric theory, respectively. Both processes have many useful extensions to fulfill the practitioners needs to model the particularities of data structures. Modeling failures times with dependent renewal type models via exchangeability
Abstract: Failure times of a machinery cannot always be assumed independent and identically distributed, e.g. if after reparations the machinery is not restored to a same-as-new condition. Framed within the renewal processes approach, a generalization that considers exchangeable inter-arrival times is presented. The resulting model provides a more realistic approach to capture the dependence among events oc… ▽ More

The compound product distribution; a solution to the distributional equation X=AX+1
Abstract: The solution of $ X=AX+1 $ is analyzed for a discrete variable $ A $ with $ \mathbb{P}\left[A=0\right]>0 $. Accordingly, a fast algorithm is presented to calculate the obtained heavy tail density. To exemplify, the compound product distribution is studied in detail for some particular families of distributions.

Properties of infrared extrapolations in a harmonic oscillator basis
Abstract: We continue our studies of infrared (ir) and ultraviolet (uv) regulators of no-core shell model calculations. We extend our results that an extrapolation in the ir cutoff with the uv cutoff above the intrinsic uv scale of the interaction is quite successful, not only for the eigenstates of the Hamiltonian but also for expectation values of operators considered long range. The latter results are ob… ▽ More

Anomalies in Quantum Mechanics: the 1/r^2 Potential
Abstract: An anomaly is said to occur when a symmetry that is valid classically becomes broken as a result of quantization. Although most manifestations of this phenomenon are in the context of quantum field theory, there are at least two cases in quantum mechanics--the two dimensional delta function interaction and the 1/r^2 potential. The former has been treated in this journal; in this article we discu… ▽ More

Isospin violation and meson-exchange models of the nucleon-nucleon interaction
Abstract: Traditionally isospin violation (charge symmetry breaking and charge dependence) has been modeled by the exchange of mesons between two nucleons.
