Magnetoresistance and anisotropic susceptibility measurements further support this model for the electronic ground state.

Structure and lattice dynamics of the (001) surface of Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ have been studied by helium atom scattering (HAS). Analysis of diffraction patterns obtained by elastic HAS revealed a surface periodicity consistent with bulk termination, and confirms that the surface is non-polar and stable which favors a SrCl surface termination. Bulk and surface lattice dynamical calculations based on the shell-model were carried out to characterize the experimental phonon dispersions obtained by inelastic HAS. No experimental surface mode was observed above 200 cm$^{-1}$. Comparison between the experimental data and theoretical results for two different slabs with SrCl and CuO$_2$ terminations showed that the experimental data conforms exclusively with the SrCl surface modes.

We report an electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the s=1/2-Heisenberg pseudo-ladder magnet CaCu2O3 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. At sub-Terahertz frequencies we observe an ESR signal originating from a small amount of uncompensated spins residing presumably at the imperfections of the strongly antiferromagnetically correlated host spin lattice. The data give evidence that these few percent of ''extra'' spin states are coupled strongly to the bulk spins and are involved in the antiferromagnetic ordering at T_N = 25 K. By map** the frequency/resonance field diagram we have determined a small gap for magnetic excitations below T_N of the order of 0.3 - 0.8 meV. Such a small value of the gap explains the occurrence of the spin-flop transition in CaCu2O 3 at weak magnetic fields H_{sf} ~ 3 T. Qualitative changes of the ESR response with increasing the field strength give indications that strong magnetic fields reduce the antiferromagnetic correlations and may even suppress the long-range magnetic order in CaCu2O3. ESR data support scenarios with a significant role of the ''extra'' spin states for the properties of low-dimensional quantum magnets.

There is a clear connection of the observed transition temperatures to the distortion of the octahedra and the layer separation. Band structure calculations point to a relation of the local coordinations and the dimensionality of the magnetic properties. While from magnetic Raman scattering only a small decrease of the magnetic exchange by -5-10% is derived comparing TiOCl with TiOBr, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility favors a much bigger change.

These small Fermi surface (FS) pockets indicate that most of the original FS vanishes at the charge ordering (CO) transition. Furthermore, in-plane magnetic fields strongly suppress the CO state. For fields rotating within the conducting planes we observe angular magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO), whose periodicity changes from two- to six-fold at the transition, suggesting that a reconstructed hexagonal FS emerges at a field of about 40 T.

We report neutron powder diffraction measurements on a series of NaxCoO2 samples with x near 0.75 which were prepared under different synthesis conditions. Two different crystal structures for the samples are observed at room temperature. The two structures differ primarily by a shift of a large fraction of the Na ions from a high-symmetry position to a lower-symmetry position. Close inspection of the refinement parameters indicates that the presence of either structure depends sensitively on the Na content x, with x = 0.75 as the critical concentration separating the two phases. By raising the temperature to around T = 323 K, the high-symmetry structure can be converted to the lower-symmetry structure. The transition is reversible, but there is significant hysteresis. We discuss the effects of this structural transition on the bulk magnetic and transport properties.

We present infrared ab-plane conductivity data for the layered cobaltate Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at three different do** levels ($x=0.25, 0.50$, and 0.75). The Drude weight increases monotonically with hole do**, $1-x$. At the lowest hole do** level $x$=0.75 the system resembles the normal state of underdoped cuprate superconductors with a scattering rate that varies linearly with frequency and temperature and there is an onset of scattering by a bosonic mode at 600 \cm. Two higher hole doped samples ($x=0.50$ and 0.25) show two different-size gaps (110 \cm and 200 \cm, respectively) in the optical conductivities at low temperatures and become insulators. The spectral weights lost in the gap region of 0.50 and 0.25 samples are shifted to prominent peaks at 200 \cm and 800 \cm, respectively. We propose that the two gapped states of the two higher hole doped samples ($x$=0.50 and 0.25) are pinned charge ordered states.

The temperature evolution of the phonon anomalies indicates, like in \cl, an extended fluctuation regime, extending well above T$_{C1}$. At low frequencies, the spectral weight is progressively suppressed by decreasing the temperature, suggesting the formation of a spin-gap and a considerable electron-phonon coupling. A comparison of the two oxyhalides shows a weaker interplane coupling and reduced dimensionality for TiOBr that enhances fluctuations and shifts the ordering temperatures to lower values. In the fluctuation regime the temperature dependencies of some phonon parameters track the temperature evolution of the magnetic susceptibility.

We report neutron scattering measurements of the structure and magnetism of stage-4 La_2CuO_{4+y} with T_c ~42 K. Our diffraction results on a single crystal sample demonstrate that the excess oxygen dopants form a three-dimensional ordered superlattice within the interstitial regions of the crystal. The oxygen superlattice becomes disordered above T ~ 330 K, and a fast rate of cooling can freeze-in the disordered-oxygen state. Hence, by controlling the cooling rate, the degree of dopant disorder in our La_2CuO_{4+y} crystal can be varied. We find that a higher degree of quenched disorder reduces T_c by ~ 5 K relative to the ordered-oxygen state. At the same time, the quenched disorder enhances the spin density wave order in a manner analogous to the effects of an applied magnetic field.

The Fano-like shape of a few selected infrared active phonons suggests an interaction between lattice vibrations and a continuum of low frequency (spin) excitations. The temperature dependence of the phonon mode parameters extends over a broad temperature range well above $T_{c1}$, indicating the presence of an extended fluctuation regime. In the temperature interval between 200 $K$ and $T_{c1}$ there is a progressive dimensionality crossover (from two to one), as well as a spectral weight shift from low towards high frequencies. This allows us to identify a characteristic energy scale of about 430 $K$, ascribed to a pseudo spin-gap.

Superconducting single crystal samples of Na_xCoO_2 + yH_2O have been produced using an electrochemical technique which dispenses with the usual bromine chemical de-intercalation step and permits much more precise control of the Na content. After careful hydration, nearly single-phase crystals have been obtained in which over 90% of the sample's volume corresponds to the superconducting Na_{0.3}CoO_2 + 1.3H_2O structure. Susceptibility and specific heat measurements confirm that bulk superconductivity has been achieved. The extracted normal state density of states indicates Fermi-liquid behavior with strong mass enhancement and a modest Wilson ratio. Measurements of H_{c2} for H||c and H||ab reveal significant anisotropy. The estimated value of H_{c2} for H||c yields a coherence length of ~100 A, consistent with an extremely narrow bandwidth.

Three excitations, which show little dependence on momentum transfer, are observed in our measurements. The lowest energy excitation at ~2.1 eV is dispersionless and is attributed to a localized d-d orbital excitation. We also observe two excitations at ~5.4 eV and ~7.6 eV which we assign to charge-transfer excitations. These high-energy excitations are also dispersionless along the copper-oxygen chain direction. However, in each case we observe a small energy dispersion along the direction perpendicular to the copper-oxygen ribbons, suggesting a significant interchain coupling in this system. We also discuss the possible implications of ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor intrachain coupling on the charge excitation spectra.

This temperature, T*, decreases with additional do** and is correlated with the magnetic crossover from the spin gap regime to the paramagnetic regime. We demonstrate that these changes in ^{17}ν_{Q} are consistent with an increase in the effective hole concentration in the Cu_{2}O_{3} two-leg ladder above T*. The effective hole concentration increases primarily in the oxygen 2pσorbitals.

By performing a photon energy dependent study on Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2 we are able to distinguish between features which are intrinsic and those which are a result of the photoemission matrix elements. We find that the dispersion is independent of photon energy, while an asymmetry in the electron occupation probability across the antiferromagnetic zone boundary is robust to variations in photon energy. Finally, we show that the d-wave-like dispersion which exists in the insulator along the antiferromagnetic zone boundary does not precisely fit the simple d-wave functional form near the nodal direction.

They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism. These results also indicate that inhomogeneous electronic states, such as charge stripes and oxygen ordering, are strongly connected to underlying lattice instabilities.

We report a neutron scattering study of the long-wavelength dynamic spin correlations in the model two-dimensional $S=1/2$ square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ and Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$. The characteristic energy scale, $ω_0 (T/J)$, is determined by measuring the quasielastic peak width in the paramagnetic phase over a wide range of temperature ($0.2 \alt T/J \alt 0.7$). The obtained values for $ω_0 (T/J)$ agree {\it quantitatively} between the two compounds and also with values deduced from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The combined data show scaling behavior, $ω\sim ξ^{-z}$, over the entire temperature range with $z=1.0(1)$, in agreement with dynamic scaling theory.

Temperature versus dopant concentration phase diagrams are mapped out for both Zn and Si dopants. The phase diagrams of both Cu_{1-x}Zn_xGeO_3 and CuGe_{1-y}Si_yO_3 closely resemble that of Cu_{1-x}Mg_xGeO_3, including the observation that the spin gap is established at a much higher temperature than the temperature at which the spin-Peierls dimerization attains long-range order. The spin-Peierls transitions in doped samples exhibit unusual phase transition behavior, characterized by highly rounded phase transitions, Lorentzian squared lineshapes, and very long relaxation times. Phenomenological explanations for these observations are given by considering the effects of competing random bond interactions as well as random fields generated by the dopants. We have also confirmed the reentrance of the spin-Peierls phase when the temperature is lowered through the antiferromagnetic ordering transition. The low temperature re-entrance of the spin-Peierls phase has been explained speculatively using a local phase separation scheme between the spin-Peierls phase and the Neel phase.

We report a neutron scattering study on the tetragonal compound Sr_2Cu_3O_4Cl_2, which has two-dimensional (2D) interpenetrating Cu_I and Cu_{II} subsystems, each forming a S=1/2 square lattice quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLQHA). The mean-field ground state is degenerate, since the inter-subsystem interactions are geometrically frustrated. Magnetic neutron scattering experiments show that quantum fluctuations lift the degeneracy and cause a 2D Ising ordering of the Cu_{II} subsystem. Due to quantum fluctuations a dramatic increase of the Cu_I out-of-plane spin-wave gap is also observed. The temperature dependence and the dispersion of the spin-wave energy are quantitatively explained by spin-wave calculations which include quantum fluctuations explicitly. The values for the nearest-neighbor superexchange interactions between the Cu_I and Cu_{II} ions and between the Cu_{II} ions are determined experimentally to be J_{I-II} = -10(2)meV and J_{II}= 10.5(5)meV, respectively. Due to its small exchange interaction, J_{II}, the 2D dispersion of the Cu_{II} SLQHA can be measured over the whole Brillouin zone with thermal neutrons, and a novel dispersion at the zone boundary, predicted by theory, is confirmed. The instantaneous magnetic correlation length of the Cu_{II} SLQHA is obtained up to a very high temperature, T/J_{II}\approx 0.75. This result is compared with several theoretical predictions as well as recent experiments on the S=1/2 SLQHA.

At low temperatures, this material undergoes an x-ray induced structural transition at which charge ordering of Mn^3+ and Mn^4+ ions characteristic to the low-temperature state of this compound is destroyed. The transition is persistent but the charge-ordered state can be restored by heating above the charge-ordering transition temperature and subsequently cooling. The charge-ordering diffraction peaks, which are broadened at all temperatures, broaden more upon x-ray irradiation, indicating the finite correlation length of the charge-ordered state. Together with the recent reports on x-ray induced transitions in Pr_(1-x)Ca_xMnO_3, our results demonstrate that the photoinduced structural change is a common property of the charge-ordered perovskite manganites.

We examine the low-temperature magnetic properties of moderately doped LaSrCuO paying particular attention to the spin-glass (SG) phase and the C-IC transition as they are affected by Sr impurity disorder. New measurements of the low-temperature susceptibility in the SG phase show an increase of an anomalously small Curie constant with do**. This behaviour is explained in terms of our theoretical work that finds small clusters of AFM correlated regions separated by disordered domain walls. The domain walls lead to a percolating sequence of paths connecting the impurities. We predict that for this spin morphology the Curie constant should scale as $1/(2 ξ(x,T=0)^2)$, a result that is quantitatively in agreement with experiment. Also, we find that the magnetic correlations in the ground states in the SG phase are commensurate, and that this behaviour should persist at higher temperatures where the holes should move along the domain walls. However, our results show that incommensurate correlations develop continuously around 5 % do**, consistent with recent measurements by Yamada.

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.
