We propose a quantum plasmonic sensor using Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometry that measures the refractive index of an analyte, embedded in a plasmonic beam splitter composed of a dual-Kretschmann configuration, which serves as a frustrated total internal reflection beamsplitter. The sensing performance of the HOM interferometry, combined with single-photon detectors, is evaluated through Fisher information for estimation of the refractive index of the analyte. This is subsequently compared with the classical benchmark that considers the injection of a coherent state of light into the plasmonic beamsplitter. By varying the wavelength of the single photons and the refractive index of the analyte, we identify a wide range where a 50 % quantum enhancement is achieved and discuss the observed behaviors in comparison with the classical benchmark. We expect this study to provide a useful insight into the advancement of quantum-enhanced sensing technologies, with direct implications for a wide range of nanophotonic beamsplitter structures.

Kondo impurities provide a nontrivial probe to unravel the character of the excitations of a quantum spin liquid. In the S=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, Kondo impurities embedded in the spin-liquid host can be screened by itinerant Majorana fermions via gauge-flux binding. Here, we report experimental signatures of metallic-like Kondo screening at intermediate temperatures in the Kitaev honeycomb material α-RuCl3 with dilute Cr3+ (S=3/2) impurities. The static magnetic susceptibility, the muon Knight shift, and the muon spin-relaxation rate all feature logarithmic divergences, a hallmark of a metallic Kondo effect. Concurrently, the linear coefficient of the magnetic specific heat is large in the same temperature regime, indicating the presence of a host Majorana metal. This observation opens new avenues for exploring uncharted Kondo physics in insulating quantum magnets.

An important problem of the sequence-to-sequence neural models widely used in abstractive summarization is exposure bias. To alleviate this problem, re-ranking systems have been applied in recent years. Despite some performance improvements, this approach remains underexplored. Previous works have mostly specified the rank through the ROUGE score and aligned candidate summaries, but there can be quite a large gap between the lexical overlap metric and semantic similarity. In this paper, we propose a novel training method in which a re-ranker balances the lexical and semantic quality. We further newly define false positives in ranking and present a strategy to reduce their influence. Experiments on the CNN/DailyMail and XSum datasets show that our method can estimate the meaning of summaries without seriously degrading the lexical aspect. More specifically, it achieves an 89.67 BERTScore on the CNN/DailyMail dataset, reaching new state-of-the-art performance. Our code is publicly available at https://github.com/jeewoo1025/BalSum.

Transfer learning has been widely utilized to mitigate the data scarcity problem in the field of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Conventional transfer learning relies on re-using models trained on AD-irrelevant tasks such as natural image classification. However, it often leads to negative transfer due to the discrepancy between the non-medical source and target medical domains. To address this, we present evidence-empowered transfer learning for AD diagnosis. Unlike conventional approaches, we leverage an AD-relevant auxiliary task, namely morphological change prediction, without requiring additional MRI data. In this auxiliary task, the diagnosis model learns the evidential and transferable knowledge from morphological features in MRI scans. Experimental results demonstrate that our framework is not only effective in improving detection performance regardless of model capacity, but also more data-efficient and faithful.

3D-aware GANs aim to synthesize realistic 3D scenes such that they can be rendered in arbitrary perspectives to produce images. Although previous methods produce realistic images, they suffer from unstable training or degenerate solutions where the 3D geometry is unnatural. We hypothesize that the 3D geometry is underdetermined due to the insufficient constraint, i.e., being classified as real image to the discriminator is not enough. To solve this problem, we propose to approximate the background as a spherical surface and represent a scene as a union of the foreground placed in the sphere and the thin spherical background. It reduces the degree of freedom in the background field. Accordingly, we modify the volume rendering equation and incorporate dedicated constraints to design a novel 3D-aware GAN framework named BallGAN. BallGAN has multiple advantages as follows. 1) It produces more reasonable 3D geometry; the images of a scene across different viewpoints have better photometric consistency and fidelity than the state-of-the-art methods. 2) The training becomes much more stable. 3) The foreground can be separately rendered on top of different arbitrary backgrounds.

Although machine learning (ML) has shown promise in numerous domains, there are concerns about generalizability to out-of-sample data. This is currently addressed by centrally sharing ample, and importantly diverse, data from multiple sites. However, such centralization is challenging to scale (or even not feasible) due to various limitations. Federated ML (FL) provides an alternative to train accurate and generalizable ML models, by only sharing numerical model updates. Here we present findings from the largest FL study to-date, involving data from 71 healthcare institutions across 6 continents, to generate an automatic tumor boundary detector for the rare disease of glioblastoma, utilizing the largest dataset of such patients ever used in the literature (25,256 MRI scans from 6,314 patients). We demonstrate a 33% improvement over a publicly trained model to delineate the surgically targetable tumor, and 23% improvement over the tumor's entire extent. We anticipate our study to: 1) enable more studies in healthcare informed by large and diverse data, ensuring meaningful results for rare diseases and underrepresented populations, 2) facilitate further quantitative analyses for glioblastoma via performance optimization of our consensus model for eventual public release, and 3) demonstrate the effectiveness of FL at such scale and task complexity as a paradigm shift for multi-site collaborations, alleviating the need for data sharing.

Because dialogues have the characteristics of high personal pronoun occurrences and low information density, and since most relational facts in dialogues are not supported by any single sentence, dialogue-based relation extraction requires a comprehensive understanding of dialogue. In this paper, we propose the TUrn COntext awaRE Graph Convolutional Network (TUCORE-GCN) modeled by paying attention to the way people understand dialogues. In addition, we propose a novel approach which treats the task of emotion recognition in conversations (ERC) as a dialogue-based RE. Experiments on a dialogue-based RE dataset and three ERC datasets demonstrate that our model is very effective in various dialogue-based natural language understanding tasks. In these experiments, TUCORE-GCN outperforms the state-of-the-art models on most of the benchmark datasets. Our code is available at https://github.com/BlackNoodle/TUCORE-GCN.

Determining the trajectories of cells and their lineages or ancestries in live-cell experiments are fundamental to the understanding of how cells behave and divide. This paper proposes novel online algorithms for jointly tracking and resolving lineages of an unknown and time-varying number of cells from time-lapse video data. Our approach involves modeling the cell ensemble as a labeled random finite set with labels representing cell identities and lineages. A spawning model is developed to take into account cell lineages and changes in cell appearance prior to division. We then derive analytic filters to propagate multi-object distributions that contain information on the current cell ensemble including their lineages. We also develop numerical implementations of the resulting multi-object filters. Experiments using simulation, synthetic cell migration video, and real time-lapse sequence, are presented to demonstrate the capability of the solutions.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) records electrical signals in a non-invasive way to observe the condition of the heart, typically looking at the heart from 12 different directions. Several types of the cardiac disease are diagnosed by using 12-lead ECGs Recently, various wearable devices have enabled immediate access to the ECG without the use of wieldy equipment. However, they only provide ECGs with a couple of leads. This results in an inaccurate diagnosis of cardiac disease due to lacking of required leads. We propose a deep generative model for ECG synthesis from two asynchronous leads to ten leads. It first represents a heart condition referring to two leads, and then generates ten leads based on the represented heart condition. Both the rhythm and amplitude of leads generated resemble those of the original ones, while the technique removes noise and the baseline wander appearing in the original leads. As a data augmentation method, our model improves the classification performance of models compared with models using ECGs with only one or two leads.

Motivated by this work, we are interested in a class of open subsets $U$ of a Banach space $X$ for which $\mathcal{H}^\infty (U)$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathcal{H}^\infty (B_{c_0})$. We prove that there exist polydisk type domains $U$ of any infinite dimensional Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis such that $\mathcal{H}^\infty (U)$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathcal{H}^\infty (B_{c_0})$, which generalizes the result by Cole and Gamelin. Furthermore, we study the analytic and algebraic structure of the spectrum of $\mathcal{H}^\infty (U)$ and show that the Cluster Value Theorem is true for $\mathcal{H}^\infty (U)$.

We propose an adapter based multi-domain Transformer based language model (LM) for Transformer ASR. The model consists of a big size common LM and small size adapters. The model can perform multi-domain adaptation with only the small size adapters and its related layers. The proposed model can reuse the full fine-tuned LM which is fine-tuned using all layers of an original model. The proposed LM can be expanded to new domains by adding about 2% of parameters for a first domain and 13% parameters for after second domain. The proposed model is also effective in reducing the model maintenance cost because it is possible to omit the costly and time-consuming common LM pre-training process. Using proposed adapter based approach, we observed that a general LM with adapter can outperform a dedicated music domain LM in terms of word error rate (WER).

Graphs are the natural data structure to represent relational and structural information in many domains. To cover the broad range of graph-data applications including graph classification as well as graph generation, it is desirable to have a general and flexible model consisting of an encoder and a decoder that can handle graph data. Although the representative encoder-decoder model, Transformer, shows superior performance in various tasks especially of natural language processing, it is not immediately available for graphs due to their non-sequential characteristics. To tackle this incompatibility, we propose GRaph-Aware Transformer (GRAT), the first Transformer-based model which can encode and decode whole graphs in end-to-end fashion. GRAT is featured with a self-attention mechanism adaptive to the edge information and an auto-regressive decoding mechanism based on the two-path approach consisting of sub-graph encoding path and node-and-edge generation path for each decoding step. We empirically evaluated GRAT on multiple setups including encoder-based tasks such as molecule property predictions on QM9 datasets and encoder-decoder-based tasks such as molecule graph generation in the organic molecule synthesis domain. GRAT has shown very promising results including state-of-the-art performance on 4 regression tasks in QM9 benchmark.

We introduce a weakened notion of norm attainment for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces which we call \emph{quasi norm attaining operators}. An operator $T\colon X \longrightarrow Y$ between the Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ is quasi norm attaining if there is a sequence $(x_n)$ of norm one elements in $X$ such that $(Tx_n)$ converges to some $u\in Y$ with $\|u\|=\|T\|$. Norm attaining operators in the usual sense (i.e.\ operators for which there is a point in the unit ball where the norm of its image equals the norm of the operator) and compact operators satisfy this definition. The main result of the paper is that strong Radon-Nikodým operators such as weakly compact operators can be approximated by quasi norm attaining operators (even by a stronger version of the definition), which does not hold for norm attaining operators. This allows us to give characterizations of the Radon-Nikodým property in term of the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators for both domain spaces and range spaces, extending previous results by Bourgain and Huff. We also present positive and negative results on the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators, characterize both finite dimensionality and reflexivity in terms of quasi norm attaining operators, discuss conditions to obtain that quasi norm attaining operators are actually norm attaining, study the relationship with the norm attainment of the adjoint operator, and present some stability properties. We finish the paper with some open questions.

The spin-Hall effect describes the interconversion of charge currents and spin currents, enabling highly efficient manipulation of magnetization for spintronics. Symmetry conditions generally restrict polarizations of these spin currents to be orthogonal to both the charge and spin flows. Spin polarizations can deviate from such direction in nonmagnetic materials only when the crystalline symmetry is reduced11. Here we experimentally show control of the spin polarization direction by using a non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$GaN, in which the triangular spin structure creates a low magnetic symmetry state while maintaining a high crystalline symmetry. We demonstrate that epitaxial Mn3GaN/Permalloy heterostructures can generate unique types of spinHall torques at room temperature corresponding to unconventional spin polarizations collinear to spin currents or charge currents which are forbidden in any sample with two-fold rotational symmetry. Our results demonstrate an approach based on spin-structure design for controlling spinorbit torque, paving the way for further progress in the emergent field of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

Classifying semantic relations between entity pairs in sentences is an important task in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Most previous models for relation classification rely on the high-level lexical and syntactic features obtained by NLP tools such as WordNet, dependency parser, part-of-speech (POS) tagger, and named entity recognizers (NER). In addition, state-of-the-art neural models based on attention mechanisms do not fully utilize information of entity that may be the most crucial features for relation classification. To address these issues, we propose a novel end-to-end recurrent neural model which incorporates an entity-aware attention mechanism with a latent entity ty** (LET) method. Our model not only utilizes entities and their latent types as features effectively but also is more interpretable by visualizing attention mechanisms applied to our model and results of LET. Experimental results on the SemEval-2010 Task 8, one of the most popular relation classification task, demonstrate that our model outperforms existing state-of-the-art models without any high-level features.

In this paper, we present a tool for analyzing spatio-temporal distribution of social anxiety. Twitter, one of the most popular social network services, has been chosen as data source for analysis of social anxiety. Tweets (posted on the Twitter) contain various emotions and thus these individual emotions reflect social atmosphere and public opinion, which are often dependent on spatial and temporal factors. The reason why we choose anxiety among various emotions is that anxiety is very important emotion that is useful for observing and understanding social events of communities. We develop a machine learning based tool to analyze the changes of social atmosphere spatially and temporally. Our tool classifies whether each Tweet contains anxious content or not, and also estimates degree of Tweet anxiety. Furthermore, it also visualizes spatio-temporal distribution of anxiety as a form of web application, which is incorporated with physical map, word cloud, search engine and chart viewer. Our tool is applied to a big tweet data in South Korea to illustrate its usefulness for exploring social atmosphere and public opinion spatio-temporally.

We report on magnetization $M(H)$, dc/ac magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements of the Kitaev honeycomb iridate Cu$_2$IrO$_2$ with quenched disorder. In spite of the chemical disorders, we find no indication of spin glass down to 260~mK from the $C_{\mathrm{m}}(T)$ and $μ$SR data. Furthermore, a persistent spin dynamics observed by the zero-field muon spin relaxation evidences an absence of static magnetism. The remarkable observation is a scaling relation of $χ[H,T]$ and $M[H,T]$ in $H/T$ with the scaling exponent $α=0.26-0.28$, expected from bond randomness. However, $C_{\mathrm{m}}[H,T]/T$ disobeys the predicted universal scaling law, pointing towards the presence of low-lying excitations in addition to random singlets. Our results signify an intriguing role of quenched disorder in a Kitaev spin system in creating low-energy excitations possibly pertaining to Z$_2$ fluxes.

For scalar reaction-diffusion equations, a traveling wave is a front which transforms a higher energy state to a lower energy state. The same is true for a system of equations with a gradient structure. At the core of this phenomenon, the wave propagation results in an invasion of an equilibrium state from a different one. This paper is aimed at two questions:
(i) Can reaction-diffusion waves exhibit front propagation in both directions between two distinct equilibrium states? (ii) The co-existence of traveling fronts and pulses; a subject rarely studied.
Working on a FitzHugh-Nagumo model with the same physical parameters, we give positive answers to both questions.

We study it for classical operators on a complex Hilbert spaces such as self-adjoint, anti-symmetric, unitary, compact, normal, and Schatten-von Neumann operators. We also solve analogous problems by replacing the norm of an operator by its numerical radius.

A common theme in investigating such systems is to identify the intrinsic factors responsible for such self-organization. The $Γ$-convergence is a well-known technique applicable to variational formulation in studying the concentration phenomena of stable patterns. A geometric variational functional associated with the $Γ$-limit of standing waves of FitzHugh-Nagumo system has recently been built. This article studies the $Γ$-limit of traveling waves. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to expand the scope of applicability of $Γ$-convergence to cover non-stationary problems.

We report on thermodynamic, magnetization, and muon spin relaxation measurements of the strong spin-orbit coupled iridate Ba$_3$IrTi$_2$O$_9$, which constitutes a new frustration motif made up a mixture of edge- and corner-sharing triangles. In spite of strong antiferromagnetic exchange interaction of the order of 100~K, we find no hint for long-range magnetic order down to 23 mK. The magnetic specific heat data unveil the $T$-linear and -squared dependences at low temperatures below 1~K. At the respective temperatures, the zero-field muon spin relaxation features a persistent spin dynamics, indicative of unconventional low-energy excitations. A comparison to the $4d$ isostructural compound Ba$_3$RuTi$_2$O$_9$ suggests that a concerted interplay of compass-like magnetic interactions and frustrated geometry promotes a dynamically fluctuating state in a triangle-based iridate.

We report an experimental investigation of the two-dimensional ${J}_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Mott insulator by varying the interlayer exchange coupling in [(SrIrO$_3$)$_1$, (SrTiO$_3$)$_m$] ($m$ = 1, 2 and 3) superlattices. Although all samples exhibited an insulating ground state with long-range magnetic order, temperature-dependent resistivity measurements showed a stronger insulating behavior in the $m$ = 2 and $m$ = 3 samples than the $m$ = 1 sample which displayed a clear kink at the magnetic transition. This difference indicates that the blocking effect of the excessive SrTiO$_3$ layer enhances the effective electron-electron correlation and strengthens the Mott phase. The significant reduction of the Neel temperature from 150 K for $m$ = 1 to 40 K for $m$ = 2 demonstrates that the long-range order stability in the former is boosted by a substantial interlayer exchange coupling. Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering revealed that the interlayer exchange coupling has a switchable sign, depending on the SrTiO$_3$ layer number $m$, for maintaining canting-induced weak ferromagnetism. The nearly unaltered transition temperature between the $m$ = 2 and the $m$ = 3 demonstrated that we have realized a two-dimensional antiferromagnet at finite temperatures with diminishing interlayer exchange coupling.

The fractionalization of elementary excitations in quantum spin systems is a central theme in current condensed matter physics. The Kitaev honeycomb spin model provides a prominent example of exotic fractionalized quasiparticles, composed of itinerant Majorana fermions and gapped gauge fluxes. However, identification of the Majorana fermions in a three-dimensional honeycomb lattice remains elusive. Here we report spectroscopic signatures of fractional excitations in the harmonic-honeycomb iridates $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Using polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy, we find that the dynamical Raman response of $β$- and $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ features a broad scattering continuum with distinct polarization and composition dependence. The temperature dependence of the Raman spectral weight is dominated by the thermal dam** of fermionic excitations. These results suggest the emergence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in a three-dimensional Kitaev-Heisenberg system.

This paper deals with the \emph{Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property} (\emph{BPBp} for short) on bounded closed convex subsets of a Banach space $X$, not just on its closed unit ball $B_X$. We firstly prove that the \emph{BPBp} holds for bounded linear functionals on arbitrary bounded closed convex subsets of a real Banach space. We show that for all finite dimensional Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ the pair $(X,Y)$ has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed convex subset $D$ of $X$, and also that for a Banach space $Y$ with property $(β)$ the pair $(X,Y)$ has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed absolutely convex subset $D$ of an arbitrary Banach space $X$. For a bounded closed absorbing convex subset $D$ of $X$ with positive modulus convexity we get that the pair $(X,Y)$ has the \emph{BPBp} on $D$ for every Banach space $Y$. We further obtain that for an Asplund space $X$ and for a locally compact Hausdorff $L$, the pair $(X, C_0(L))$ has the \emph{BPBp} on every bounded closed absolutely convex subset $D$ of $X$. Finally we study the stability of the \emph{BPBp} on a bounded closed convex set for the $\ell_1$-sum or $\ell_{\infty}$-sum of a family of Banach spaces.

For domain spaces, we study Banach spaces $X$ such that $(X,Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBp) for every Banach space $Y$. We show that in this case, there exists a universal function $η_X(\varepsilon)$ such that for every $Y$, the pair $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp with this function. This allows us to prove some necessary isometric conditions for $X$ to have the property. We also prove that if $X$ has this property in every equivalent norm, then $X$ is one-dimensional. For range spaces, we study Banach spaces $Y$ such that $(X,Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for every Banach space $X$. In this case, we show that there is a universal function $η_Y(\varepsilon)$ such that for every $X$, the pair $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp with this function. This implies that this property of $Y$ is strictly stronger than Lindenstrauss property B. The main tool to get these results is the study of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for $c_0$-, $\ell_1$- and $\ell_\infty$-sums of Banach spaces.

The original prioritized list of object classes resulted from a needs assessment involving 8 motor-impaired patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and targeted, in-person interviews of 15 motor-impaired ALS patients. All of these participants were drawn from the Emory ALS Center.
The prioritized object list consists of 43 object classes ranked by how important the participants considered each class to be for retrieval by an assistive robot. We intend for this list to be used by researchers to inform the design and benchmarking of robotic systems, especially research related to autonomous mobile manipulation.

Let $K$ be a Hausdorff space and $C_b(K)$ be the Banach algebra of all complex bounded continuous functions on $K$. We study the Gâteaux and Fréchet differentiability of subspaces of $C_b(K)$. Using this, we show that the set of all strong peak functions in a nontrivial separating separable subspace $H$ of $C_b(K)$ is a dense $G_δ$ subset of $H$, if $K$ is compact. This gives a generalized Bishop's theorem, which says that the closure of the set of strong peak point for $H$ is the smallest closed norming subset of $H$. The classical Bishop's theorem was proved for a separating subalgebra $H$ and a metrizable compact space $K$.
In the case that $X$ is a complex Banach space with the Radon-Nikodým property, we show that the set of all strong peak functions in $A_b(B_X)=\{f\in C_b(B_X) : f|_{B_X^\circ} {is holomorphic}\}$ is dense. As an application, we show that the smallest closed norming subset of $A_b(B_X)$ is the closure of the set of all strong peak points for $A_b(B_X)$. This implies that the norm of $A_b(B_X)$ is Gâteaux differentiable on a dense subset of $A_b(B_X)$, even though the norm is nowhere Fréchet differentiable when $X$ is nontrivial. We also study the denseness of norm attaining holomorphic functions and polynomials. Finally we investigate the existence of numerical Shilov boundary.

We investigate solutions to a nonlinear integral equation which has a central role in implementing the non-Abelian Gauss's Law and in constructing gauge-invariant quark and gluon fields. Here we concern ourselves with solutions to this same equation that are not operator-valued, but are functions of spatial variables and carry spatial and SU(2) indices. We obtain an expression for the gauge-invariant gauge field in two-color QCD, define an index that we will refer to as the ``winding number'' that characterizes it, and show that this winding number is invariant to a small gauge transformation of the gauge field on which our construction of the gauge-invariant gauge field is based. We discuss the role of this gauge field in determining the winding number of the gauge-invariant gauge field. We also show that when the winding number of the gauge field is an integer $\ell{\neq}0$, the gauge-invariant gauge field manifests winding numbers that are not integers, and are half-integers only when $\ell=0$.
