We propose a novel method in that quark-gluon tagging of the jets emitted as initial state radiation (ISR) can boost searches of invisible Higgs from gluon fusion processes against irreducible electroweak vector boson productions. While quark ISR typically takes up a dominant portion than gluon in the background processes mainly by frequent quark-gluon initiated hard scatterings at the LHC, gluon ISR portion in the gluon fusion can be significantly larger in the central region of detector. Focusing on invisible Higgs searches using jet substructure variables capturing the new features, we demonstrate that Higgs from gluon fusion constrains invisible Higgs decays the most, over vector boson fusion traditionally known as the most constraining, and the limit on the branching ratio is significantly improved. We summarize with emphasizing that our method has wider implications in search for new resonances from gluon fusion processes.

Multi-document question generation focuses on generating a question that covers the common aspect of multiple documents. Such a model is useful in generating clarifying options. However, a naive model trained only using the targeted ("positive") document set may generate too generic questions that cover a larger scope than delineated by the document set. To address this challenge, we introduce the contrastive learning strategy where given "positive" and "negative" sets of documents, we generate a question that is closely related to the "positive" set but is far away from the "negative" set. This setting allows generated questions to be more specific and related to the target document set. To generate such specific questions, we propose Multi-Source Coordinated Question Generator (MSCQG), a novel framework that includes a supervised learning (SL) stage and a reinforcement learning (RL) stage. In the SL stage, a single-document question generator is trained. In the RL stage, a coordinator model is trained to find optimal attention weights to align multiple single-document generators, by optimizing a reward designed to promote specificity of generated questions. We also develop an effective auxiliary objective, named Set-induced Contrastive Regularization (SCR) that improves the coordinator's contrastive learning during the RL stage. We show that our model significantly outperforms several strong baselines, as measured by automatic metrics and human evaluation. The source repository is publicly available at \url{www.github.com/woonsangcho/contrast_qgen}.

Ambiguous user queries in search engines result in the retrieval of documents that often span multiple topics. One potential solution is for the search engine to generate multiple refined queries, each of which relates to a subset of the documents spanning the same topic. A preliminary step towards this goal is to generate a question that captures common concepts of multiple documents. We propose a new task of generating common question from multiple documents and present simple variant of an existing multi-source encoder-decoder framework, called the Multi-Source Question Generator (MSQG). We first train an RNN-based single encoder-decoder generator from (single document, question) pairs. At test time, given multiple documents, the 'Distribute' step of our MSQG model predicts target word distributions for each document using the trained model. The 'Aggregate' step aggregates these distributions to generate a common question. This simple yet effective strategy significantly outperforms several existing baseline models applied to the new task when evaluated using automated metrics and human judgments on the MS-MARCO-QA dataset.

Generating coherent and cohesive long-form texts is a challenging task. Previous works relied on large amounts of human-generated texts to train neural language models. However, few attempted to explicitly improve neural language models from the perspectives of coherence and cohesion. In this work, we propose a new neural language model that is equipped with two neural discriminators which provide feedback signals at the levels of sentence (cohesion) and paragraph (coherence). Our model is trained using a simple yet efficient variant of policy gradient, called negative-critical sequence training, which is proposed to eliminate the need of training a separate critic for estimating baseline. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, showing improvements over the strong baseline -- recurrent attention-based bidirectional MLE-trained neural language model.

We develop a parameterized Primal-Dual $π$ Learning method based on deep neural networks for Markov decision process with large state space and off-policy reinforcement learning. In contrast to the popular Q-learning and actor-critic methods that are based on successive approximations to the nonlinear Bellman equation, our method makes primal-dual updates to the policy and value functions utilizing the fundamental linear Bellman duality. Naive parametrization of the primal-dual $π$ learning method using deep neural networks would encounter two major challenges: (1) each update requires computing a probability distribution over the state space and is intractable; (2) the iterates are unstable since the parameterized Lagrangian function is no longer linear. We address these challenges by proposing a relaxed Lagrangian formulation with a regularization penalty using the advantage function. We show that the dual policy update step in our method is equivalent to the policy gradient update in the actor-critic method in some special case, while the value updates differ substantially. The main advantage of the primal-dual $π$ learning method lies in that the value and policy updates are closely coupled together using the Bellman duality and therefore more informative. Experiments on a simple cart-pole problem show that the algorithm significantly outperforms the one-step temporal-difference actor-critic method, which is the most relevant benchmark method to compare with. We believe that the primal-dual updates to the value and policy functions would expedite the learning process. The proposed methods might open a door to more efficient algorithms and sharper theoretical analysis.

We discuss non-standard interpretations of the 750 GeV diphoton excess recently reported by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations which do not involve a new, relatively broad, resonance with a mass near 750 GeV. Instead, we consider the sequential cascade decay of a much heavier, possibly quite narrow, resonance into two photons along with one or more invisible particles. The resulting diphoton invariant mass signal is generically rather broad, as suggested by the data. We examine three specific event topologies - the antler, the sandwich, and the 2-step cascade decay, and show that they all can provide a good fit to the observed published data. In each case, we delineate the preferred mass parameter space selected by the best fit. In spite of the presence of invisible particles in the final state, the measured missing transverse energy is moderate, due to its anti- correlation with the diphoton invariant mass. We comment on the future prospects of discriminating with higher statistics between our scenarios, as well as from more conventional interpretations.

The calculation of these variables generally involves constrained minimization in a large parameter space, which is numerically challenging. We provide a C++ code, OPTIMASS, which interfaces with the MINUIT library to perform this constrained minimization using the Augmented Lagrangian Method. The code can be applied to arbitrarily general event topologies and thus allows the user to significantly extend the existing set of kinematic variables. We describe this code and its physics motivation, and demonstrate its use in the analysis of the fully leptonic decay of pair-produced top quarks using the $M_2$ variables.

The search for light stops is of paramount importance, both in general as a promising path to the discovery of beyond the standard model physics and more specifically as a way of evaluating the success of the naturalness paradigm. While the LHC experiments have ruled out much of the relevant parameter space, there are "stop gaps", i.e., values of sparticle masses for which existing LHC analyses have relatively little sensitivity to light stops. We point out that techniques involving on-shell constrained M_2 variables can do much to enhance sensitivity in this region and hence help close the stop gaps. We demonstrate the use of these variables for several benchmark points and describe the effect of realistic complications, such as detector effects and combinatorial backgrounds, in order to provide a useful toolkit for light stop searches in particular, and new physics searches at the LHC in general.

We consider a class of on-shell constrained mass variables that are 3+1 dimensional generalizations of the Cambridge $M_{T2}$ variable and that automatically incorporate various assumptions about the underlying event topology. The presence of additional on-shell constraints causes their kinematic distributions to exhibit sharper endpoints than the usual $M_{T2}$ distribution. We study the mathematical properties of these new variables, e.g., the uniqueness of the solution selected by the minimization over the invisible particle 4-momenta. We then use this solution to reconstruct the masses of various particles along the decay chain. We propose several tests for validating the assumed event topology in missing energy events from new physics. The tests are able to determine: 1) whether the decays in the event are two-body or three-body, 2) if the decay is two-body, whether the intermediate resonances in the two decay chains are the same, and 3) the exact sequence in which the visible particles are emitted from each decay chain.

We consider the decay of a generic resonance to two visible particles and any number of invisible particles. We show that the shape of the invariant mass distribution of the two visible particles is sensitive to both the mass spectrum of the new particles, as well as the decay topology. We provide the analytical formulas describing the invariant mass shapes for the nine simplest topologies (with up to two invisible particles in the final state). Any such distribution can be simply categorized by its endpoint, peak location and curvature, which are typically sufficient to discriminate among the competing topologies. In each case, we list the effective mass parameters which can be measured by experiment. In certain cases, the invariant mass shape is sufficient to completely determine the new particle mass spectrum, including the overall mass scale.

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

In quantum computation, information is processed by gates that must coherently couple separate qubits. In many systems the qubits are naturally coupled, but such an always-on interaction limits the algorithms that may be implemented. Coupling interactions may also be directed in devices and circuits that are provided with additional control wiring. This can be achieved by adjusting the gate voltage in a semiconductor device or an additional flux in a superconducting device. Such control signals must be applied adiabatically (limiting the speed) and the additional wiring provides pathways for noise, which leads to decoherence. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach to coupling by exploiting the nonlinear behaviour of a degenerately doped silicon transistor. A single transistor can exhibit a large number of individual resonances, which are seen as changes in the source-drain current of a dc-biased device. These resonances may be addressed in frequency space due to their high quality factors. Two widely separated resonances are addressed and coupled in three-frequency spectroscopy by ensuring that the third frequency corresponds to the difference between the two individual resonances. The nonlinearity causes the generation of additional driving signals with appropriate frequency and phase relationships to ensure coupling, resulting in additional spectroscopic features that could be exploited for rapid state manipulation and gate operations.

It is a mixture of `stransverse mass(MT2)' and `contransverse mass(MCT)' variables, where the usual endpoint structure of MT2 distribution can be amplified in the MCT2 basis by large Jacobian factor which is controlled by trial missing particle mass. Thus the MCT2 projection of events increases our observability to measure several important endpoints from new particle decays, which are usually expected to be buried by irreducible backgrounds with various systematic uncertainties at the LHC. In this paper we explain the phenomenology of endpoint amplification in MCT2 projection, and describe how one may employ this variable to measure several meaningful mass constraints of new particles.

We propose a scheme to assign a 4-momentum to each WIMP in new physics event producing a pair of mother particles each of which decays to an invisible weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) plus some visible particle(s). The transverse components are given by the value that determines the event variable M_T2, while the longitudinal component is determined by the on-shell condition on the mother particle. Although it does not give the true WIMP momentum in general, this M_T2-assisted on-shell reconstruction of missing momenta provides kinematic variables well correlated to the true WIMP momentum, and thus can be useful for an experimental determination of new particle properties. We apply this scheme to some processes to measure the mother particle spin, and find that spin determination is possible even without a good knowledge of the new particle masses.

We study LHC phenomenology of mirage mediation scenario in which anomaly and modulus contributions to soft SUSY breaking terms are comparable to each other. A Monte Carlo study of mirage mediation, with model parameters $α=1$,$ M_0=500$ GeV, $n_M=1/2$, $n_H=1$ and $\rm{tan}β=10$, is presented. It is shown that masses of supersymmetric particles can be measured in a model independent way, providing information on SUSY breaking sector. In particular, the mass ratio of gluino to the lightest neutralino for the benchmark scenario is determined to be $1.9 \lesssim m_{\tildeg}/m_{\tildeχ_1^0} \lesssim 3.1$, well reproducing theoretical input value of $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tildeχ_1^0} \simeq 2.5$ which is quite distinctive from the predictions $m_{\tilde g}/m_{\tildeχ_1^0} \gtrsim 6$ of other SUSY scenarios in which gaugino masses are unified at the GUT scale. The model parameters of mirage mediation can be also determined from various kinematic distributions.
