In this paper, we study an application of deep learning to uplink multiuser detection (MUD) for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme based on Welch bound equality spread multiple access (WSMA). Several non-cooperating users, each with its own preassigned NOMA signature sequence (SS), transmit over the same resource. These SSs have low correlation among them and aid in the user separation at the receiver during MUD. Several subtasks such as equalizing, combining, slicing, signal reconstruction and interference cancellation are involved in MUD. The neural network (NN) considered in this paper replaces these well-defined receiver blocks with a single black box, i.e., the NN provides a one-shot approximation for these modules. We consider two different supervised feed-forward NN implementations, namely, a deep NN and a 2D-Convolutional NN, for MUD. Performance of these two NNs is compared with the conventional receivers. Simulation results show that by proper selection of the NN parameters, it is possible for the black box approximation to provide faster and better performance, compared to conventional MUD schemes, and it achieves almost the same symbol error rate as the ultimate one obtained by the complex maximum likelihood-based detectors.

Abstract:
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered as a study-item in 3GPP for 5G new radio (NR). However, it was decided not to continue with it as a work-item, and to leave it for possible use in beyond 5G. In this paper, we first review the discussions that ended in such decision. Particularly, we present simulation comparisons between the NOMA and multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO), where the possible gain of NOMA, compared to MU-MIMO, is negligible. Then, we propose a number of methods to reduce the implementation complexity and delay of both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) NOMA-based transmission, as different ways to improve its efficiency. Here, particular attention is paid to reducing the receiver complexity, the cost of hybrid automatic repeat request as well as the user pairing complexity. As demonstrated, different smart techniques can be applied to improve the energy efficiency and the end-to-end transmission delay of NOMA-based systems.

In this paper, we consider a wireless communication system where a large intelligent surface (LIS) is deployed comprising a number of small and distributed LIS-Units. Each LIS-Unit has a separate signal process unit (SPU) and is connected to a central process unit (CPU) that coordinates the behaviors of all the LIS-Units. With such a LIS system, we consider the user assignments both for sum-rate and minimal user-rate maximizations. That is, assuming $M$ LIS-Units deployed in the LIS system, the objective is to select $K$ ($K\!\leq\!M$) best LIS-Units to serve $K$ autonomous users simultaneously. Based on the nice property of effective inter-user interference suppression of the LIS-Units, the optimal user assignments can be effectively found through classical linear assignment problems (LAPs) defined on a bipartite graph. To be specific, the optimal user assignment for sum-rate and user-rate maximizations can be solved by linear sum assignment problem (LSAP) and linear bottleneck assignment problem (LBAP), respectively. The elements of the cost matrix are constructed based on the received signal strength (RSS) measured at each of the $M$ LIS-Units for all the $K$ users. Numerical results show that, the proposed user assignments are close to optimal user assignments both under line-of-sight (LoS) and scattering environments.
