Norm-resolvent convergence for Neumann Laplacians on manifolds thinning to graphs
Abstract: Norm-resolvent convergence with order-sharp error estimate is established for Neumann Laplacians on thin domains in $\mathbb{R}^d,$ $d\ge2,$ converging to metric graphs in the limit of vanishing thickness parameter in the resonant case. The vertex matching conditions of the limiting quantum graph are revealed as being closely related to $δ'$ type.

Asymptotic analysis of operator families and applications to resonant media
Abstract: We give an overview of operator-theoretic tools that have recently proved useful in the analysis of boundary-value and transmission problems for second-order partial differential equations, with a view to addressing, in particular, the asymptotic behaviour of resolvents of physically motivated parameter-dependent operator families. We demonstrate the links of this rich area, on the one hand, to fu… ▽ More

Functional model for generalised resolvents and its application to time-dispersive media
Abstract: Motivated by recent results concerning the asymptotic behaviour of differential operators with highly contrasting coefficients, which have involved effective descriptions involving generalised resolvents, we construct the functional model for a typical example of the latter. This provides a spectral representation for the generalised resolvent, which can be utilised for further analysis, in partic… ▽ More

Operator-norm resolvent asymptotic analysis of continuous media with high-contrast inclusions
Abstract: Using a generalisation of the classical notion of Dirichlet-to-Neumann map and the related formulae for the resolvents of boundary-value problems, we analyse the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to a "transmission problem" for a high-contrast inclusion in a continuous medium, for which we prove the operator-norm resolvent convergence to a limit problem of "electrostatic" type for functions that a… ▽ More

Functional model for boundary-value problems
Abstract: We develop a functional model for operators arising in the study of boundary-value problems of materials science and mathematical physics. We then provide explicit formulae for the resolvents of the associated extensions of symmetric operators in terms of the associated generalised Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps, which can be utilised in the analysis of the properties of parameter-dependent problems as… ▽ More

Scattering theory for a class of non-selfadjoint extensions of symmetric operators
Abstract: This work deals with the functional model for a class of extensions of symmetric operators and its applications to the theory of wave scattering. In terms of Boris Pavlov's spectral form of this model, we find explicit formulae for the action of the unitary group of exponentials corresponding to almost solvable extensions of a given closed symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices. On the b… ▽ More

Functional model for extensions of symmetric operators and applications to scattering theory
Abstract: On the basis of the explicit formulae for the action of the unitary group of exponentials corresponding to almost solvable extensions of a given closed symmetric operator with equal deficiency indices, we derive a new representation for the scattering matrix for pairs of such extensions. We use this representation to explicitly recover the coupling constants in the inverse scattering problem for a… ▽ More

Homogenisation of thin periodic frameworks with high-contrast inclusions
Abstract: We analyse a problem of two-dimensional linearised elasticity for a two-component periodic composite, where one of the components consists of disjoint soft inclusions embedded in a rigid framework. We consider the case when the contrast between the elastic properties of the framework and the inclusions, as well as the ratio between the period of the composite and the framework thickness increase a… ▽ More

Norm-resolvent convergence of one-dimensional high-contrast periodic problems to a Kronig-Penney dipole-type model
Abstract: We prove operator-norm resolvent convergence estimates for one-dimensional periodic differential operators with rapidly oscillating coefficients in the non-uniformly elliptic high-contrast setting, which has been out of reach of the existing homogenisation techniques. Our asymptotic analysis is based on a special representation of the resolvent of the operator in terms of the $M$-matrix of an asso… ▽ More

Full two-scale asymptotic expansion and higher-order constitutive laws in the homogenisation of the system of Maxwell equations
Abstract: For the system of Maxwell equations of electromagnetism in an $l$-periodic composite medium of overall size $L$ ($0<l<L<\infty$), in the low-frequency quasistatic approximation, we develop an electromagnetic version of strain-gradient theories, where the magnetic field is not a function of the magnetic induction alone but also of its spatial gradients, and the electric field depends not only on th… ▽ More

Spectral analysis of one-dimensional high-contrast elliptic problems with periodic coefficients
Abstract: We study the behaviour of the spectrum of a family of one-dimensional operators with periodic high-contrast coefficients as the period goes to zero, which may represent e.g. the elastic or electromagnetic response of a two-component composite medium. Compared to the standard operators with moderate contrast, they exhibit a number of new effects due to the underlying non-uniform ellipticity of the… ▽ More
