Abstract:
Yellow supergiants (YSGs) are rare and poorly understood, and studying them is critical to constraining massive star evolution. We obtained flux-calibrated Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) high-resolution spectra of 40 YSGs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC); this sample likely contains post-red supergiants (RSGs). Fitting these data with ATLAS9 model atmospheres, we determined fundamental…

Fitting these data with ATLAS9 model atmospheres, we determined fundamental parameters for these stars. We measure the first spectroscopic luminosities for YSGs above 20 $M_\odot$, providing us a novel probe of the luminosity-to-mass ratio. Many stars in our sample appear to have anomalously high surface gravities, despite being confirmed LMC supergiants. We manually inspected our data finding evidence for binary companions and ongoing mass loss. Our work demonstrates the valuable role of high-resolution spectroscopy in interpreting the evolutionary status of cool supergiants.

Abstract:
Topological Hall effect (THE), an electrical transport signature of systems with chiral spin textures like skyrmions, has been observed recently in topological insulator (TI)-based magnetic heterostructures. However, the intriguing interplay between the topological surface state and THE is yet to be fully understood. In this work, we report a large THE of ~10 ohm (~4 micro-ohm*cm) at 2 K with an e…

Topological Hall effect (THE), an electrical transport signature of systems with chiral spin textures like skyrmions, has been observed recently in topological insulator (TI)-based magnetic heterostructures. However, the intriguing interplay between the topological surface state and THE is yet to be fully understood. In this work, we report a large THE of ~10 ohm (~4 micro-ohm*cm) at 2 K with an electrically reversible sign in a top-gated 4 nm TI (Bi0.3Sb0.7)2Te3 (BST) grown on a ferrimagnetic insulator (FI) europium iron garnet (EuIG). Temperature, external magnetic field angle, and top gate bias dependences of magnetotransport properties were investigated and consistent with a skyrmion-driven THE. Most importantly, a sign change in THE was discovered as the Fermi level was tuned from the upper to the lower parts of the gapped Dirac cone and vice versa. This discovery is anticipated to impact technological applications in ultralow power skyrmion-based spintronics.

Device-free wireless indoor localization is a key enabling technology for the Internet of Things (IoT). Fingerprint-based indoor localization techniques are a commonly used solution. This paper proposes a semi-supervised, generative adversarial network (GAN)-based device-free fingerprinting indoor localization system. The proposed system uses a small amount of labeled data and a large amount of unlabeled data (i.e., semi-supervised), thus considerably reducing the expensive data labeling effort. Experimental results show that, as compared to the state-of-the-art supervised scheme, the proposed semi-supervised system achieves comparable performance with equal, sufficient amount of labeled data, and significantly superior performance with equal, highly limited amount of labeled data. Besides, the proposed semi-supervised system retains its performance over a broad range of the amount of labeled data. The interactions between the generator, discriminator, and classifier models of the proposed GAN-based system are visually examined and discussed. A mathematical description of the proposed system is also presented.
