On the Structure of Permutation Invariant Parking
Authors:

Abstract:
We continue the study of parking assortments, a generalization of parking functions introduced by Chen, Harris, Martínez, Pabón-Cancel, and Sargent. Given $n$ cars of lengths $\mathbf{y}=(y_1,y_2,\dots,y_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$, we focus on the sets $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$ and $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})$ of permutation invariant (resp. nondecreasing) parking…

We continue the study of parking assortments, a generalization of parking functions introduced by Chen, Harris, Martínez, Pabón-Cancel, and Sargent. Given $n$ cars of lengths $\mathbf{y}=(y_1,y_2,\dots,y_n) \in \mathbb{N}^n$, we focus on the sets $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$ and $\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})$ of permutation invariant (resp. nondecreasing) parking assortments for $\mathbf{y}$. For $\mathbf{x} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$, we introduce the degree of $\mathbf{x}$, the number of non-$1$ entries of $\mathbf{x}$, and the characteristic $χ(\mathbf{y})$ of $\mathbf{y}$, the greatest degree of $\mathbf{z} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y})$. We establish direct necessary conditions for $\mathbf{y}$ with $χ(\mathbf{y})=0$ and a characterization for $\mathbf{y}$ with $χ(\mathbf{y})=n-1$. For the latter, we derive a closed form for its invariant parking set and enumerate its size using properties of the Pitman-Stanley polytope. Next, we prove closure and embedding properties of the invariant parking set. We apply these results to study the degree as a function and the characteristic under sequences of successive prefix length vectors. We then examine the invariant solution set $\mathcal{W}(\mathbf{y})=\{ w \in \mathbb{N}:(1^{n-1},w) \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv}}_n(\mathbf{y}) \}$. We obtain tight upper bounds of this set and prove that its size is at most $2^{n-1}$, providing constraints on the subsequence sums of $\mathbf{y}$ for equality to hold. Finally, we show that if $\mathbf{x} \in \mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})$, then $\mathbf{x} \in \{ 1 \}^{n-χ(\mathbf{y})} \times \mathcal{W}(\mathbf{y})^{χ(\mathbf{y})}$, which implies a new upper bound on $|\mathsf{PA}^{\mathrm{inv},\uparrow}_n(\mathbf{y})|$. Our results generalize several theorems by Chen et al.

These are delta matroids whose feasible sets are in bijection with lattice paths which are symmetric along the main diagonal. We describe deletion, contraction, envelo** matroids, and the homogeneous components of these delta matroids in terms of the combinatorics of symmetric lattice paths.
In the second half, we study the convex geometry of the feasible polytopes of lattice path delta matroids. We show that these polytopes decompose into the feasible polytope of special lattice paths corresponding to intervals in the type $C_n$ Gale order whose related Richardson variety is a toric variety. Further, these special polytopes inherit a unimodular triangulation from Stanley's Eulerian triangulation of the hypercube. As a consequence, the volume of these polytopes is the proportion of permutations with specific ascent sets.

Abstract:
We introduce parking assortments, a generalization of parking functions with cars of assorted lengths. In this setting, there are $n\in\mathbb{N}$ cars of lengths $\mathbf{y}=(y_1,y_2,\ldots,y_n)\in\mathbb{N}^n$ entering a one-way street with $m=\sum_{i=1}^ny_i$ parking spots. The cars have parking preferences $\mathbf{x}=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)\in[m]^n$, where $[m]:=\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$, and enter the…

The cars have parking preferences $\mathbf{x}=(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_n)\in[m]^n$, where $[m]:=\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$, and enter the street in order. Each car $i \in [n]$, with length $y_i$ and preference $x_i$, follows a natural extension of the classical parking rule: it begins looking for parking at its preferred spot $x_i$ and parks in the first $y_i$ contiguously available spots thereafter, if there are any. If all cars are able to park under the preference list $\mathbf{x}$, we say $\mathbf{x}$ is a parking assortment for $\mathbf{y}$. Parking assortments also generalize parking sequences, introduced by Ehrenborg and Happ, since each car seeks for the first contiguously available spots it fits in past its preference. Given a parking assortment $\mathbf{x}$ for $\mathbf{y}$, we say it is permutation invariant if all rearrangements of $\mathbf{x}$ are also parking assortments for $\mathbf{y}$. While all parking functions are permutation invariant, this is not the case for parking assortments in general, motivating the need for characterization of this property. Although obtaining a full characterization for arbitrary $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbf{y}\in\mathbb{N}^n$ remains elusive, we do so for $n=2,3$. Given the technicality of these results, we introduce the notion of minimally invariant car lengths, for which the only invariant parking assortment is the all ones preference list. We provide a concise, oracle-based characterization of minimally invariant car lengths for any $n\in\mathbb{N}$. Our results around minimally invariant car lengths also hold for parking sequences.

Abstract:
Transport characteristics of single crystal bismuth films on Si(111)-7 \times 7 are found to be metallic or insulating at temperature below or above TC, respectively. The transition temperature TC decreases as the film thickness increases. Transport characteristics of single crystal bismuth films on Si(111)-7 \times 7 are found to be metallic or insulating at temperature below or above TC, respectively. The transition temperature TC decreases as the film thickness increases. By combining thickness dependence of the films resistivity, we find the insulating behavior results from the states inside film, while the metallic behavior originates from the interface states. We show that quantum size effect in a Bi film, such as the semimetal-to-semiconductor transition, is only observable at a temperature higher than TC. In addition, the metallic interface state is shown to result from the large SO-splitting at interfaces.

Quantum wells made of simple polyvalent metals represent a novel family of doped 2D Mott-Hubbard insulators. As scanning tunneling microscopy experiments show, these systems exhibit an anisotropic form of metal-insulator transition. Their elementary excitations possess coherent wave-like properties along the normal axis, and show an incoherent behavior in-plane. The development of such an anisotropic coherence is most likely related to Coulomb interaction between localized and delocalized thin film electronic states - 2D Kondo screening.
