Edge computing is a popular target for accelerating machine learning algorithms supporting mobile devices without requiring the communication latencies to handle them in the cloud. Edge deployments of machine learning primarily consider traditional concerns such as SWaP constraints (Size, Weight, and Power) for their installations. However, such metrics are not entirely sufficient to consider environmental impacts from computing given the significant contributions from embodied energy and carbon. In this paper we explore the tradeoffs of convolutional neural network acceleration engines for both inference and on-line training. In particular, we explore the use of processing-in-memory (PIM) approaches, mobile GPU accelerators, and recently released FPGAs, and compare them with novel Racetrack memory PIM. Replacing PIM-enabled DDR3 with Racetrack memory PIM can recover its embodied energy as quickly as 1 year. For high activity ratios, mobile GPUs can be more sustainable but have higher embodied energy to overcome compared to PIM-enabled Racetrack memory.

A fully self-consistent density-functional theory (DFT) with improved functionals is used to provide a comprehensive account of structural, electronic, and optical properties of C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ polymorphs. Using our recently developed van Leeuwen-Baerends (vLB) corrected local-density approximation (LDA), we implemented LDA+vLB within full-potential N$^{th}$-order muffin-tin orbital (FP-NMTO) method and show that it improves structural properties and band gaps compared to semi-local functionals (LDA/GGA). We demonstrate that the LDA+vLB predicts band-structure and work-function for well-studied 2D-graphene and bulk-Si in very good agreement with experiments, and more exact hybrid functional (HSE) calculations as implemented in the Quantum-Espresso (QE) package. The structural and electronic-structure (band gap) properties of C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ polymorphs calculated using FP-NMTO-LDA+vLB is compared with more sophisticated hybrid-functional calculations. We also perform detailed investigation of photocatalytic behavior using QE-HSE method of C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ polymorphs through work-function, band (valence and conduction) position with respect to water reduction and oxidation potential. Our results show $γ$-C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ as the best candidate for photocatalysis among all the C$_{3}$N$_{4}$~polymorphs but it is dynamically unstable at `zero' pressure. We show that $γ$-C$_{3}$N$_{4}$ can be stabilized under hydrostatic-pressure, which improves its photocatalytic behavior relative to water reduction and oxidation potentials.

In this communication, we report a theoretical attempt to understand the electronic and optical properties of germagraphene, a two-dimensional graphene analogue. We study two different structures, C$_{17}$Ge and C$_{16}$Ge. In the C$_{17}$Ge structure, a germanium atom replaces a carbon atom while in C$_{16}$Ge structure, a carbon-carbon bond is replaced by a single germanium atom. These two types of do** have been experimentally made possible by Tripathi \etal [{\it{ACS Nano (2018) 1254641-4647}}]. We find that C$_{16}$Ge has a planar structure, whereas, the Ge atom in C$_{17}$Ge settles in an out-of-the plane position, resulting in a buckled structure. Due to Ge do**, the band-gaps open up in both. The 1.227 eV direct gap of C$_{17}$Ge is ideal for effective light absorbance and optoelectronic devices. Further study of optical properties supports this claim as well.

We study the coupled atom-molecular quantized ring vortices of 87Rb Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC) trapped in a rotating three dimensional (3D) anisotropic cylindrical trap both in time independent and time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii approaches. For atom to molecular conversion and vice-versa two-photon Raman photoassociation scheme has been used. Atomic and molecular stationary state solutions show that the different number of nodes and crests formed in the density profile (as a function of r and z) for different combinations of radial (n) and axial (nz) quantum numbers at a fixed azimuthal quantum number l=2, give rise to different structure around the 3D ring vortex centered at r=0. We have considered both spontaneous and induced decays and compared the results with those without considering the decays. The out of phase oscillation of atomic and molecular numbers in two vortex states both in presence and absence of external decays is the signature of coherence due to the atom-molecular coupling. This coherence is also implemented in the evolution of coupled atomic and molecular vortices. Intensity of molecular ring vortices grows with progress in time in expense of that of atomic ring vortices and vice versa. It is found that the intensity of the coupled atomic and molecular ring vortices starts oscillation out of phase during evolution. Dependence of the atom-molecular conversion efficiency and the lifetime of the system on the laser intensity of photoassociation lasers and the total number of atoms in two different vortex states reveals that formation of atom-molecular coupled vortices and the efficiency of formation can be controlled by varying these parameters. Linear stability analysis of vortex states as a function of different system parameters shows that the atomic vortices are more stable than molecular vortices.

This is done using Getzler's relationship among cohomology classes of certain codimension 2 cycles in $\overline{M}_{1,4}$ and recursively computing the genus-one Gromov-Witten invariants of del Pezzo surfaces. Using completely different methods, this problem has been solved earlier by Bertram and Abramovich, Ravi Vakil, Dubrovin and Zhang and more recently using Tropical geometric methods by M. Shoval and E. Shustin. We also subject our formula to several low degree checks and compare them to the numbers obtained by the earlier authors.

We show that more complete and compact basis set is critical in improving the electronic and structural properties. We exemplify the self-consistent FP-NMTO calculations on group IV and III-V semiconductors. Notably, predicted bandgaps, lattice constants, and bulk moduli are in good agreement with experiments (e.g., we find for Ge $0.86~e$V, $5.57$~Å, $75$~GPa vs. measured $0.74~e$V, $5.66$~Å, $77.2$~GPa). We also showcase its application to the electronic properties of 2-dimensional $h-$BN and $h-$SiC, again finding good agreement with experiments.

We have successfully applied this to zigzag and armchair tubes. The methodology involves no intrinsic mean-field like assumptions or external parameter fitting. As defects proliferate, the low density of states near the Fermi levels of the pristine tubes is filled with defect states. The increase of DOS at the Fermi level leads to enhanced conduction, which indicates enhanced metallicity due to SW defects in the nanotubes.

Character segmentation has long been one of the most critical areas of optical character recognition process. Through this operation, an image of a sequence of characters, which may be connected in some cases, is decomposed into sub-images of individual alphabetic symbols. In this paper, segmentation of cursive handwritten script of world's fourth popular language, Bengali, is considered. Unlike English script, Bengali handwritten characters and its components often encircle the main character, making the conventional segmentation methodologies inapplicable. Experimental results, using the proposed segmentation technique, on sample cursive handwritten data containing 218 ideal segmentation points show a success rate of 97.7%. Further feature-analysis on these segments may lead to actual recognition of handwritten cursive Bengali script.

A, 52, 1137 (1995)] close-coupled treatments of He2+-He single and double charge transfer collisions is made in this paper with a larger, 27-state close-coupled calculation. The calculations have been done using the diabatic molecular basis set used in the earlier work extended by adding excited orbitals leading to higher excitation channels up to 3s and 3p. For such molecular basis functions that go to the correct separated-atom limits used in this work, the present results show that without the inclusion of the electron translation factors (ETFs) the quantitative cross-section calculations up to velocity ~1.1 a.u. (~30 keV/amu) are in good agreement with both experiment and other calculations. This suggests that if ETFs are properly incorporated into the charge transfer collision studies at low energies this diabatic molecular basis can be used for benchmark calculations. With the aid of the Wannier's picture of the ground state correlations, a combined detailed analysis and comparison has been carried out to find a connection with the dynamic two-electron correlation picture in charge transfer collision processes which involve sequential/simultaneous two-electron exchange. If ETFs are included, the model approach of the present work may open up opportunities to investigate dynamic two-electron correlation effect in charge transfer ion-atom collision processes with benchmark accuracy.

The currently supported back-ends are the tableau prover Zenon and Isabelle/TLA+, an axiomatisation of TLA+ in Isabelle/Pure.
