We study scenarios of self-similar type blow-up for the incompressible Navier-Stokes and the Euler equations. The previous notions of the discretely (backward) self-similar solution and the asymptotically self-similar solution are generalized to the locally asymptotically discretely self-similar solution. We prove that there exists no such locally asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations if the blow-up profile is a time periodic function belonging to $C^1(\Bbb R ; L^3(\Bbb R^3)\cap C^2 (\Bbb R^3))$. For the 3D Euler equations we show that the scenario of asymptotically discretely self-similar blow-up is excluded if the blow-up profile satisfies suitable integrability conditions.

In this paper, we establish an optimal blow-up criterion for classical solutions to the incompressible resistive Hall-magnetohydrodynamic equations. We also prove two global-in-time existence results of the classical solutions for small initial data, the smallness conditions of which are given by the suitable Sobolev and the Besov norms respectively. Although the Sobolev space version is already an improvement of the corrresponding result in \cite{Chae-Degond-Liu}, the optimality in terms of the scaling property is achieved via the Besov space estimate.
The special property of the energy estimate in terms of $\dot{B}^s_{2,1}$ norm is essential for this result.
Contrary to the usual MHD the global well-posedness in the $2\frac12$ dimensional Hall-MHD is wide open.

We measure branching fractions for decays with intermediate $Σ_{c}$ baryons to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΣ_{c}(2455)^{++}\bar{p}π^{-}]=(21.3 \pm 1.0 \pm 1.0 \pm 5.5) \times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΣ_{c}(2520)^{++}\bar{p}π^{-}]=(11.5\pm 1.0 \pm 0.5 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΣ_{c}(2455)^{0}\bar{p}π^{+}]=(9.1 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.4 \pm 2.4)\times10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΣ_{c}(2520)^{0}\bar{p}π^{+}]= (2.2 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\pm 0.6) \times 10^{-5}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the $Λ_{c}^{+}\rightarrow\proton\Kmπ^{+}$ branching fraction, respectively. For decays without $Σ_{c}(2455)$ or $Σ_{c}(2520)$ resonances, we measure ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΛ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}π^{+}π^{-}]_{\mathrm{non-Σ_{c}}}=(79 \pm 4 \pm 4 \pm 20)\times10^{-5}$. The total branching fraction is determined to be ${\cal B}[\bar{B}^{0}\rightarrowΛ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}π^{+}π^{-}]_{\mathrm{total}}=(123 \pm 5 \pm 7 \pm 32)\times10^{-5}$. We examine multibody mass combinations in the resonant three-particle $Σ_{c}\bar{p}π$ final states and in the four-particle $Λ_{c}^{+}\bar{p}π^{+}π^{-}$ final state, and observe different characteristics for the $\bar{p}π$ combination in neutral versus doubly-charged $Σ_{c}$ decays.

Under suitable decay conditions at infinity for $(v,p)$ we prove that for almost all $α(t)$ and $β(t)$ defined on $(0, T)$ there holds
\bqn &&\int_{\{α(t)< Q(x,t)<β(t)\}} (1/2\frac{\partial}{\partial t} |v|^2+ν|ø|^2) dx
=ν\int_{Q(x,t)= β(t)} |\nabla Q|dS
&& {1.7in}-ν\int_{Q(x,t)= α(t)} |\nabla Q|dS,
\eqn where $ø=$ curl $v$ is the vorticity.
This shows that, in each region squeezed between two levels of the Bernoulli function, besides the energy dissipation due to the enstrophy, the energy flows into the region through the level hypersurface having the higher level, and the energy flows out of the region through the level hypersurface with the lower level. Passing $α(t)\downarrow\inf_{x\in \Bbb R^N} Q(x,t)$ and $ β(t)\uparrow\sup_{x\in \Bbb R^N} Q(x,t)$, we recover the well-known energy equality, $
1/2\frac{d}{dt} \int_{\Bbb R^N} |v|^2=-ν\int_{\Bbb R^N} |ø|^2 dx.$
A weaker version of the above equality under the weaker decay assumption of the solution at spatial infinity is also derived. The stationary version of the equality implies the previous Liouville type results on the Navier-Stokes equations.

We report the results of a study of the exclusive charmless semileptonic decays, B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu, B^+ --> eta l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu, (l = e or mu) undertaken with approximately 462x10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. The analysis uses events in which the signal B decays are reconstructed with a loose neutrino reconstruction technique. We obtain partial branching fractions in several bins of q^2, the square of the momentum transferred to the lepton-neutrino pair, for B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu, B^+ --> pi^0 l^+ nu, B^+ --> omega l^+ nu and B^+ --> eta l^+ nu. From these distributions, we extract the form-factor shapes f_+(q^2) and the total branching fractions BF(B^0 --> pi^- l^+ nu) = (1.45 +/- 0.04_{stat} +/- 0.06_{syst})x10^-4 (combined pi^- and pi^0 decay channels assuming isospin symmetry), BF(B^+ --> omega l^+ nu) = (1.19 +/- 0.16_{stat} +/- 0.09_{syst})x10^-4 and BF(B^+ --> eta l^+ nu) = (0.38 +/- 0.05_{stat} +/- 0.05_{syst})x10^-4. We also measure BF(B^+ --> eta^' l^+ nu) = (0.24 +/- 0.08_{stat} +/- 0.03_{syst})x10^-4. We obtain values for the magnitude of the CKM matrix element V_{ub} by direct comparison with three different QCD calculations in restricted q^2 ranges of B --> pi l^+ nu decays. From a simultaneous fit to the experimental data over the full q^2 range and the FNAL/MILC lattice QCD predictions, we obtain |V_{ub}| = (3.25 +/- 0.31)x10^-3, where the error is the combined experimental and theoretical uncertainty.

Using 468 million $B\bar{B}$ pairs produced in $Υ(4S)$ decays collected by the BABAR detector at SLAC, we measure T-violating parameters in the time evolution of neutral B mesons, yielding $ΔS_T^+ = -1.37 \pm 0.14 (stat.) \pm 0.06 (syst.)$ and $ΔS_T^- = 1.17 \pm 0.18 (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)$. These nonzero results represent the first direct observation of T violation through the exchange of initial and final states in transitions that can only be connected by a T-symmetry transformation.

The possibilty of performing high-rate calorimetry with a slow scintillator crystal is studied. In this experimental situation, to avoid pulse pile-up, it can be necessary to base the energy measurement on only a fraction of the emitted light, thus spoiling the energy resolution. This effect was experimentally studied with a BGO crystal and a photomultiplier followed by an integrator, by measuring the peak amplitude of the signals. The experimental data show that the energy resolution is exclusively due to the statistical fluctuations of the number of photoelectrons contributing to the peak amplitude. When such number is small its fluctuations are even smaller than those predicted by Poisson statistics. These results were confirmed by a Monte Carlo simulation which allows to estimate, in a general case, the energy resolution, given the total number of photoelectrons, the scintillation time and the integration time.

For quantum systems with competing potentials, the conventional perturbation theory often yields an asymptotic series and the subsequent numerical outcome becomes uncertain. To tackle such kind of problems, we develop a general solution scheme based on a new energy dissection idea. Instead of dividing the potential energy into "unperturbed" and "perturbed" terms, a partition of the kinetic energy is performed. By distributing the kinetic energy term in part into each individual potential, the Hamiltonian can be expressed as the sum of the subsystem Hamiltonians with respective competing potentials. The total wavefunction is expanded by using a linear combination of the basis sets of respective subsystem Hamiltonians. We first illustrate the solution procedure using a simple system consisting of a particle under the action of double delta-function potentials. Next, this method is applied to the prototype systems of a charged harmonic oscillator in strong magnetic field and the hydrogen molecule ion. Compared with the usual perturbation approach, this new scheme converges much faster to the exact solutions for both eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. When properly extended, this new solution scheme can be very useful for dealing with strongly coupling quantum systems.

In particular, in $N$ dimensions if in self-similar variables $u \in L^p$ and $u \sim \frac{1}{t^{\a/(1+\a)}}$, then the blow-up does not occur provided $\a >N/2$ or $-1<\a\leq N/p$. This includes the $L^3$ case natural for the Navier-Stokes equations. For $\a = N/2$ we exclude profiles with an asymptotic power bounds of the form $ |y|^{-N-1+\d} \lesssim |u(y)| \lesssim |y|^{1-\d}$. Homogeneous near infinity solutions are eliminated as well except when homogeneity is scaling invariant.

This paper investigates the global (in time) regularity of solutions to a system of equations that generalize the vorticity formulation of the 2D Boussinesq-Navier-Stokes equations. The velocity $u$ in this system is related to the vorticity $ω$ through the relations $u=\nabla^\perp ψ$ and $Δψ= Λ^σ(\log(I-Δ))^γω$, which reduces to the standard velocity-vorticity relation when $σ=γ=0$. When either $σ>0$ or $γ>0$, the velocity $u$ is more singular. The "quasi-velocity" $v$ determined by $\nabla\times v =ω$ satisfies an equation of very special structure. This paper establishes the global regularity and uniqueness of solutions for the case when $σ=0$ and $γ\ge 0$. In addition, the vorticity $ω$ is shown to be globally bounded in several functional settings such as $L^2$ for $σ>0$ in a suitable range.

Our perturbations include as special cases the Euler equations with a `single signed' nonlinear term, the self-similar Euler equations, and the steady Navier-Stokes equations. For these equations show that suitable decay assumptions at infinity on the solution or its derivatives, imposed by the $L^q$ conditions imply that the only possible solution is zero.

Abstract:
This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. This paper establishes several existence and uniqueness results for two families of active scalar equations with velocity fields determined by the scalars through very singular integrals. The first family is a generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with the velocity field $u$ related to the scalar $θ$ by $u=\nabla^\perpΛ^{β-2}θ$, where $1<β\le 2$ and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$ is the Zygmund operator. The borderline case $β=1$ corresponds to the SQG equation and the situation is more singular for $β>1$. We obtain the local existence and uniqueness of classical solutions, the global existence of weak solutions and the local existence of patch type solutions. The second family is a dissipative active scalar equation with $u=\nabla^\perp (\log(I-Δ))^μθ$ for $μ>0$, which is at least logarithmically more singular than the velocity in the first family. We prove that this family with any fractional dissipation possesses a unique local smooth solution for any given smooth data. This result for the second family constitutes a first step towards resolving the global regularity issue recently proposed by K. Ohkitani \cite{Oh}.

We investigate the role of electron-hole correlations in the absorption of freestanding monolayer and bilayer graphene using optical transmission spectroscopy from 1.5 to 5.5 eV. Line shape analysis demonstrates that the ultraviolet region is dominated by an asymmetric Fano resonance. We attribute this to an excitonic resonance that forms near the van-Hove singularity at the saddle point of the band structure and couples to the Dirac continuum. The Fano model quantitatively describes the experimental data all the way down to the infrared. In contrast, the common non-interacting particle picture cannot describe our data. These results suggest a profound connection between the absorption properties and the topology of the graphene band structure.

The 2D Navier-Stokes vorticity equations correspond to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation to $P(Λ) =Λ$. We obtain the global regularity for a class of equations for which $P(Λ)$ and the fractional power of the dissipative Laplacian are required to satisfy an explicit condition. In particular, the active scalar equations with any fractional dissipation and with $P(Λ)= (\log(I-Δ))^γ$ for any $γ>0$ are globally regular.

Any classical solution of the 2D incompressible Euler equation is global in time. However, it remains an outstanding open problem whether classical solutions of the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation preserve their regularity for all time. This paper studies solutions of a family of active scalar equations in which each component $u_j$ of the velocity field $u$ is determined by the scalar $θ$ through $u_j =\mathcal{R} Λ^{-1} P(Λ) θ$ where $\mathcal{R}$ is a Riesz transform and $Λ=(-Δ)^{1/2}$. The 2D Euler vorticity equation corresponds to the special case $P(Λ)=I$ while the SQG equation to the case $P(Λ) =Λ$. We develop tools to bound $\|\nabla u||_{L^\infty}$ for a general class of operators $P$ and establish the global regularity for the Loglog-Euler equation for which $P(Λ)= (\log(I+\log(I-Δ)))^γ$ with $0\le γ\le 1$. In addition, a regularity criterion for the model corresponding to $P(Λ)=Λ^β$ with $0\le β\le 1$ is also obtained.

Phonon carrier interactions can have significant impact on device performance. They can be probed by measuring the phonon lifetime, which reflects the interaction strength of a phonon with other quasi-particles in particular charge carriers as well as its companion phonons. The carrier phonon and phonon-phonon contributions to the phonon lifetime can be disentangled from temperature dependent studies. Here, we address the importance of phonon carrier interactions in Joule-heated graphene constrictions in order to contribute to the understanding of energy dissipation in graphene based electronic devices. We demonstrate that gapless graphene grants electron phonon interactions uncommon significance in particular at low carrier density. In conventional semiconductors, the bandgap usually prevents the decay of phonons through electron-hole generation and also in metals or other semimetals the Fermi temperature is excessively large to enter the regime where electron phonon coupling plays such a dominant role as in graphene in the investigated phonon temperature regime from 300 to 1600 K.

High throughput genoty** experiments have been performed to study genomic instability in diseases. The output of such experiments can be summarized as high dimensional binary vectors, where each binary variable records aberration status at one marker locus. It is of keen interest to understand how these aberrations interact with each other. In this paper, we propose a novel method, \texttt{LogitNet}, to infer the interactions among aberration events. The method is based on penalized logistic regression with an extension to account for spatial correlation in the genomic instability data. We conduct extensive simulation studies and show that the proposed method performs well in the situations considered. Finally, we illustrate the method using genomic instability data from breast cancer samples.

In this paper we prove nonexistence of stationary weak solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations and the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^N$, $N\geq 2$, under suitable assumptions of integrability for the density, velocity and the potential of the force field. For the time dependent Euler-Poisson equations we prove nonexistence result assuming additionally temporal asymptotic behavior near infinity of the second moment of density. For a class of time dependent Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations this asymptotic behavior of the density can be proved if we assume the standard energy inequality, and therefore the nonexistence of global weak solution follows from more plausible assumption in this case.

We report about investigations of time-dependent structural modifications in single crystal graphene due to laser irradiation even at moderate power levels of 1mW in a diffraction limited spot. The structural modifications have been characterized by in situ scanning confocal Raman spectroscopy, atomic force height microscopy and transport studies. The time evolution of the Raman spectrum reveals two different effects: on a short time scale, dopants, initially present on the flake, are removed. The longer time scale behavior points to a laser induced gradual local decomposition of single crystal graphene into a network of interconnected nano-crystallites with a characteristic length scale of approximately 10 nm due to bond-breaking. The broken bonds offer additional docking sites for adsorbates as confirmed in transport and AFM height studies. These controlled structural modifications may for instance be valuable for enhancing the local reactivity and trimming graphene based gas sensors.

We examine the effects of the additional term of the type $\sim e^{- λ' N_pN_n}$ on the recently proposed empirical formula for the lowest excitation energy of the $2^+$ states in even-even nuclei. This study is motivated by the fact that this term carries the favorable dependence of the valence nucleon numbers dictated by the $N_pN_n$ scheme. We show explicitly that there is not any improvement in reproducing $E_x(2_1^+)$ by including the extra $N_pN_n$ term. However, our study also reveals that the excitation energies $E_x(2_1^+)$, when calculated by the $N_pN_n$ term alone (with the mass number $A$ dependent term), are quite comparable to those calculated by the original empirical formula.

We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} estimates for the 3D Euler and the Navier-Stokes equations.

On the apparition of singularities of vector fields transported by volume preserving diffeomorphisms
Authors:

We consider possible generation of singularities of a vector field transported by diffeomorphisms with derivatives of uniformly bounded determinants. A particular case of volume preserving diffeomrphism is the most important, since it has direct applications to the incompressible, inviscid hydrodynamics. We consider possible generation of singularities of a vector field transported by diffeomorphisms with derivatives of uniformly bounded determinants. A particular case of volume preserving diffeomrphism is the most important, since it has direct applications to the incompressible, inviscid hydrodynamics. We find relations between the directions of the vector field and the eigenvectors of the derivative of the back-to-label map near the singularity. We also find an invariant when we follow the motion of the integral curves of the vector field. For the 3D Euler equations these results have immediate implications about the directions of the vortex stretching and the material stretching near the possible singularities. We also have similar applications to the other inviscid, incompressible fluid equations such as the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation and the 3D magnetohydrodynamics equations.

Abstract:
We present a new expression for the energy of the lowest collective states in even-even nuclei throughout the entire periodic table. Our empirical formula is extremely valid and holds universally for all of the natural parity even multipole states. This formula depends only on the mass number and the valence nucleon numbers with six parameters. These parameters are determined easily and unambigu…

We present a new expression for the energy of the lowest collective states in even-even nuclei throughout the entire periodic table. Our empirical formula is extremely valid and holds universally for all of the natural parity even multipole states. This formula depends only on the mass number and the valence nucleon numbers with six parameters. These parameters are determined easily and unambiguously from the data for each multipole state. We discuss the validity of our empirical formula by comparing our results with those of other studies and also by estimating the average and the dispersion of the logarithmic errors of the calculated excitation energies with respect to the measured ones.

Remarks on regularity conditions of the Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:
Let $v$ and $ø$ be the velocity and the vorticity of the a suitable weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes equations in a space-time domain containing $z_0 =(x_0, t_0)$, and $Q_{z_0, r} =B_{x_0, r}\times (t_0-r^2, t_0)$ be a parabolic cylinder in the domain. We show that if $v\times \fracø{|ø|}\in L^{γ, α}_{x,t} (Q_{z_0, r})$ or $ø\times \frac{v}{|v|}\in L^{γ, α}_{x,t} (Q_{z_0, r})$, where…

This refines previous local regularity criteria for the suitable weak solutions.

We demonstrate explicitly that the $N_p N_n$ scheme for the excitation energy emerges from the separate exponential dependence of the excitation energy on the valence nucleon numbers $N_p$ and $N_n$ together with the fact that only a limited set of numbers is allowed for the $N_p$ and $N_n$ of the existing nuclei.

It has been shown recently that a simple formula in terms of the valence nucleon numbers and the mass number can describe the essential trends of excitation energies of the first $2^+$ states in even-even nuclei. By evaluating the first order energy shift due to the zero-range residual interaction, we find that the factor which reflects the effective particle number participating in the interaction from the Fermi orbit governs the main dependence of the first $2^+$ excitation energy on the valence nucleon numbers.
