In dense systems of hard-interacting colloidal particles with anisotropic shapes, crystallization pathways represent an interesting frontier since directional entropic forces often cause fascinating variations in the equilibrium crystal structures. At increasing densities, when the orientational excluded volumes of anisotropic particles start overlap**, their translational and rotational dynamics become coupled, introducing complexities in the kinetics of their configurational reorganization, which facilitates ordering. To elucidate this, we have studied a two-dimensional system of osmotically compressed corner-rounded Brownian square platelets, which are known to equilibrate into hexagonal and rhombic crystalline phases as the osmotic pressure is increased. By analyzing the translational and orientational dynamics of the particles and calculating their corresponding contributions to minimize the free energy, we have shown that the accessible range of orientational diffusion of particles governs the pathways of structural evolution and consequent optimal equilibrium ordering at a given osmotic pressure. As the accessible orientational excursion becomes wider, the rotational contribution to configurational entropy minimizes the total free energy, leading to hexagonal ordering. At higher osmotic pressures, the long collective translational fluctuations of side-aligned particles with restricted rotational diffusion maximize entropy, thereby inducing a free energetically favored rhombic crystalline structure. Intriguingly, the density, which solely governs the crystallization of hard spheres, does not have any direct effect on this process. Complementary Brownian dynamics simulations further corroborate these experimental observations and interpretations. Our findings are also relevant to other systems of hard interacting anisotropic shapes in two and three dimensions.

Despite the success of graph neural networks (GNNs) in various domains, they exhibit susceptibility to adversarial attacks. Understanding these vulnerabilities is crucial for develo** robust and secure applications. In this paper, we investigate the impact of test time adversarial attacks through edge perturbations which involve both edge insertions and deletions. A novel explainability-based method is proposed to identify important nodes in the graph and perform edge perturbation between these nodes. The proposed method is tested for node classification with three different architectures and datasets. The results suggest that introducing edges between nodes of different classes has higher impact as compared to removing edges among nodes within the same class.

Precise and timely fault diagnosis is a prerequisite for a distribution system to ensure minimum downtime and maintain reliable operation. This necessitates access to a comprehensive procedure that can provide the grid operators with insightful information in the case of a fault event. In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous multi-task learning graph neural network (MTL-GNN) capable of detecting, locating and classifying faults in addition to providing an estimate of the fault resistance and current. Using a graph neural network (GNN) allows for learning the topological representation of the distribution system as well as feature learning through a message-passing scheme. We investigate the robustness of our proposed model using the IEEE-123 test feeder system. This work also proposes a novel GNN-based explainability method to identify key nodes in the distribution system which then facilitates informed sparse measurements. Numerical tests validate the performance of the model across all tasks.

Calibrating agent-based models (ABMs) in economics and finance typically involves a derivative-free search in a very large parameter space. In this work, we benchmark a number of search methods in the calibration of a well-known macroeconomic ABM on real data, and further assess the performance of "mixed strategies" made by combining different methods. We find that methods based on random-forest surrogates are particularly efficient, and that combining search methods generally increases performance since the biases of any single method are mitigated. Moving from these observations, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL) scheme to automatically select and combine search methods on-the-fly during a calibration run. The RL agent keeps exploiting a specific method only as long as this keeps performing well, but explores new strategies when the specific method reaches a performance plateau. The resulting RL search scheme outperforms any other method or method combination tested, and does not rely on any prior information or trial and error procedure.

All present commercial colors are based on pigments. While such traditional pigment-based colorants offer a commercial platform for large-volume and angle-insensitiveness, they are limited by their instability in the atmosphere, color fading, and severe environmental toxicity. Commercial exploitation of artificial structural coloration has fallen short due to the lack of design ideas and impractical nanofabrication techniques. Here, we present a self-assembled subwavelength plasmonic cavity that overcomes these challenges while offering a tailorable platform for rendering angle and polarization-independent vivid structural colors. Fabricated through large-scale techniques we produce stand-alone paints ready to be used on any substrate. The platform offers full coloration with a single layer of pigment, surface density of 0.4 g/m2, making it the lightest paint in the world.

Manual interpretation and classification of ECG signals lack both accuracy and reliability. These continuous time-series signals are more effective when represented as an image for CNN-based classification. A continuous Wavelet transform filter is used here to get corresponding images. In achieving the best result generic CNN architectures lack sufficient accuracy and also have a higher run-time. To address this issue, we propose an ensemble method of transfer learning-based models to classify ECG signals. In our work, two modified VGG-16 models and one InceptionResNetV2 model with added feature extracting layers and ImageNet weights are working as the backbone. After ensemble, we report an increase of 6.36% accuracy than previous MLP-based algorithms. After 5-fold cross-validation with the Physionet dataset, our model reaches an accuracy of 99.98%.

Excitonic resonance and binding energies can be altered by controlling the environmental screening of the attractive Coulomb potential. Although this screening response is often assumed to be static, the time evolution of the excitonic quasiparticles manifests a frequency-dependence in its Coulomb screening efficacy. In this letter, we investigate a ground (1s) and first excited exciton state (2s) in a multi-layered transition metal dichalcogenide (MoS$_2$) upon ultrafast photo-excitation. We explore the dynamic screening effects on the latter and show its resonance frequency is the relevant frequency at which screening from the smaller-sized 1s counterparts is effective. Our finding sheds light on new avenues of external tuning on excitonic properties.

Extraordinary transmission through subwavelength metallic apertures has been extensively studied and demonstrated. At resonance, the coupling between surface plasmons on both surfaces of the metallic film tunnels the photon from the one side to the other through the subwavelength aperture with small transmission efficiency based on the metals dielectric parameters and aperture geometrical dimensions. Here, we report a completely different form of extraordinary transmission, where the two subwavelength complementary apertures when coupled with an optical cavity induce about 100% extraordinary transmission far away from the natural plasmon resonance of the constituent metallic apertures. Such unique cavity phase driven plasmon resonance enables tuning of the extraordinary transmission band across wide spectral range unlike previously reported geometry driven extraordinary transmission.
