Background: Neutron transfer measurements for the $^{18}$O + $^{28}$Si system have shown that the experimental one-neutron and two-neutron transfer cross sections are well reproduced with spectroscopic amplitudes from two different shell model interactions for the Si isotopes: \textit{psdmod} for the two-neutron transfer, and \textit{psdmwkpn} for the one-neutron transfer.
Purpose: The origin of this ambiguity can be related to a more complex mechanism in the one-neutron transfer that requires the unpairing of neutrons prior to its transfer in the ($^{18}$O,$^{17}$O) reaction. Studying a nucleus where this characteristic is absent ($^{13}$C) should help to elucidate this question.
Method: One-neutron transfer cross sections were measured for the $^{13}$C + $^{28}$Si at E$_{lab}$ = 30, and 34 MeV, and compared with coupled reaction channel calculations using spectroscopic amplitudes derived from the \textit{psdmod} and \textit{psdmwkpn} shell model interactions.
Results: The spectroscopic amplitudes from the \textit{psdmod} interaction for the relevant states in $^{29}$Si provide a good description of the experimental data and the corresponding values agree with previous estimates obtained from the (d,p) reaction.
Conclusions: The experimental data for the one-neutron transfer to $^{28}$Si induced by ($^{13}$C,$^{12}$C) reaction is well reproduced using spectroscopic amplitudes from the \textit{psdmod}.

Coupled reaction channel (CRC) calculations have been performed in the context of the double-folding São Paulo potential. The theoretical calculations result in a good overall description of the experimental angular distributions. The effect on the theoretical elastic-scattering angular distributions of couplings to the inelastic and transfer states (through the CRC calculations) and to the continuum states (through continuum-discretized coupled-channels calculations) has been investigated.

Using the Sao Paulo potential and the barrier penetration formalism we have calculated the astrophysical factor S(E) for 946 fusion reactions involving stable and neutron-rich isotopes of C, O, Ne, and Mg for center-of-mass energies E varying from 2 MeV to 18-30 MeV (covering the range below and above the Coulomb barrier). We have parameterized the energy dependence S(E) by an accurate universal 9-parameter analytic expression and present tables of fit parameters for all the reactions. We also discuss the reduced 3-parameter version of our fit which is highly accurate at energies below the Coulomb barrier, and outline the procedure for calculating the reaction rates. The results can be easily converted to thermonuclear or pycnonuclear reaction rates to simulate various nuclear burning phenomena, in particular, stellar burning at high temperatures and nucleosynthesis in high density environments.

We investigate the effect of Pauli non-locality in the heavy-ion optical potential on sub-barrier fusion reactions. The São Paulo potential, which takes into account the Pauli non-locality and has been widely used in analyzing elastic scattering, has also recently been applied to heavy-ion fusion. However, the approximation employed in deriving the São Paulo potential, based on the Perey-Buck semi-classical treatment of neutron induced reactions, must be assessed for charged particles tunneling through a barrier. It is the purpose of this note to look into this question. We consider the widely studied system $^{16}$O + $^{208}$Pb at energies that span the barrier region from 10 MeV below to 10 MeV above. It seems that the non-locality plays a minor role. We find the São Paulo potential to be quite adequate throughout the region.

In this paper we analyze the nuclear fusion rate between equal nuclei for all five different nuclear burning regimes in dense matter (two thermonuclear regimes, two pycnonuclear ones, and the intermediate regime). The rate is determined by Coulomb barrier penetration in dense environments and by the astrophysical S-factor at low energies. We evaluate previous studies of the Coulomb barrier problem and propose a simple phenomenological formula for the reaction rate which covers all cases. The parameters of this formula can be varied, taking into account current theoretical uncertainties in the reaction rate. The results are illustrated for the example of the ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion reaction. This reaction is very important for the understanding of nuclear burning in evolved stars, in exploding white dwarfs producing type Ia supernovae, and in accreting neutron stars. The S-factor at stellar energies depends on a reliable fit and extrapolation of the experimental data. We calculate the energy dependence of the S-factor using a recently developed parameter-free model for the nuclear interaction, taking into account the effects of the Pauli nonlocality. For illustration, we analyze the efficiency of carbon burning in a wide range of densities and temperatures of stellar matter with the emphasis on carbon ignition at densities rho > 10^9 g/cc.

It is pointed out that the usual threshold anomaly, found operative in the energy behavior of the imaginary and real parts of the optical potential representing the elastic scattering of tightly bound nuclei at near- and below-barrier energies, suffers a drastic qualitative change in the case of the elastic scattering of weakly bound nuclei. Owing to the strong coupling to the breakup channel even at sub-barrier energies, the imaginary potential strength seems to increase as the energy is lowered down to below the natural, barrier, threshold, accompanied by a decrease in the real potential strength. This feature is consistent with the dispersion relation. The system $^{6}$Li + $^{208}$Pb is analyzed to illustrate this new phenomenon.

We present fusion and elastic scattering data with the tightly bound $^{16}$O and the stable weakly bound $^{6}$Li, $^{7}$Li and $^{9}$Be projectiles. The data were analyzed by coupled channel calculations. The total fusion cross sections for these systems are not affected by the break-up process at energies above the barrier. The elastic (non-capture) break-up cross section is important at energies close and above the Coulomb barrier and increases the reaction cross sections. In addition we also show that the break-up process at near and sub-barrier energies is responsible for the vanishing of the usual threshold anomaly of the optical potential and give rise to a new type of anomaly.

The study of Coulomb excitation of 11Be to the first excited state in intermediate energy collisions with heavy targets is presented. The existing experimental data are reanalised by including the probability of projectile survival into the calculation of Coulomb excitation cross sections. The survival probabilities are calculated using a recently developed global optical model potential tailored in line with the double folding model. The extracted B(E1) values for the transition 1/2+ --> 1/2- in 11Be are found to be slightly larger than those obtained so far using the b_0-recipe in Coulomb excitation theory.

The off-shell $ $cross sections for the quasi free reaction stage have been calculated within the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation (PWIA), using a Macroscopic -Microscopic description of the proton and neutron single particle momentum distributions. Electron wave function distortion corrections were included using the effective momentum approximation, and the Final State Interaction (FSI) effects were calculated using an optical potential. The fissility for the proton single hole excited states of the residual nucleus $^{237}$Pa was calculated both without and with contributions of the pre-equilibrium emission of the particles. The fissility for $^{237,238}U$ residual nuclei was calculated within the compound nucleus model. The $(e,e^{\prime}f)-$cross sections thus obtained were compared with available experimental data.

Extensive systematization of theoretical and experimental nuclear densities and of optical potential strengths exctracted from heavy-ion elastic scattering data analyses at low and intermediate energies are presented. The energy-dependence of the nuclear potential is accounted for within a model based on the nonlocal nature of the interaction. The systematics indicate that the heavy-ion nuclear potential can be described in a simple global way through a double-folding shape, which basically depends only on the density of nucleons of the partners in the collision. The poissibility of extracting information about the nucleon-nucleon interaction from the heavy-ion potential is investigated.
