Abstract:
An $SO(10)$ model where the $10_H$ and $120_H$ representations are used for generating fermion masses is quite predictive, though due to the absence of $SU(2)_{L,R}$ triplet/singlet fields it cannot give rise to neutrino masses through the usual type-I or type-II seesaw mechanisms. In this paper for neutrino masses we propose an extension of such an $SO(10)$ model by adding fermions in the adjoint representation (${45}_F$) and a symmetry breaking scalar $\bar{16}_H$. The $\bar{16}_H$ couples the adjoint fermions to the standard fermions in ${16}_F$ and induces neutrino masses through the `double seesaw' mechanism. In order to enhance the predictivity of the model we impose $μ-τ$ flavour symmetry on the Yukawa matrices for $10_H$ and $\bar{16}_H$ whereas for the $120_H$ it is assumed to be antisymmetric. We discuss the conditions that the mass matrices must obey so that the model can reproduce the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern.

We study a distinct supersymmetric signal of multi-photons in association with jets and missing transverse energy. At least one of these photons has the origin in displaced vertex, thus delayed and non-pointing. We consider a supersymmetric scenario in which the gravitino is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) (with a mass $\sim 1~{keV}$) and the lightest neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP). The NLSP decays dominantly into a photon and a gravitino within the detector with a decay length ranging from $cτ_{\tildeχ}\sim$ 50-100 cm. In addition, we assume that the second lightest neutralino and the lightest neutralino are nearly degenerate and this leads to a prompt radiative decay of the next-to-lightest neutralino into a photon and a lightest neutralino with a large branching ratio. Such degenerate neutralinos can be realised in various representations of the $SU(5)$, $SO(10)$, and $E(6)$ Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). The non-pointing photons can be reconstructed at the electromagnetic calorimeter of the ATLAS inner-detector, which have been designed with good timing and directional resolution. We find that with a centre-of-mass energy $E_{cm}=14 ~{TeV}$ at an integrated luminosity of 100 $fb^{-1}$ one may see evidence of hundreds of tri-photon events and a few four-photons events at the LHC, in addition to several thousands di-photon events. We also predict the event rates even at the early phase of LHC run.

Abstract:
Effective dimension-5 operators which modify the gauge kinetic term in Grand Unified Theories may arise as a consequence of quantum gravity or string compactification. We exhaustively calculate the modification of the gauge unification condition due to such operators for all viable rank-preserving symmetry breakings of SO(10) and E(6) grand unified models.

In this scenario B-L scale can be very low. This makes B-L gauge boson and the quasi-Dirac $heavy$ leptons very light. These TeV scale particles could have large impact on lepton flavor and CP violating processes. We also shed light on the phenomenological aspects of the model within the reach of the LHC.

Here we examine SU(5), SO(10), and E(6) GUTs in the light of all such permitted operators and calculate the impact on the intermediate scales and the unification programme. We show that in many cases at least one intermediate scale can be lowered to even 1-10 TeV, where a neutral Z' and possibly other states are expected.

In models with two sources of neutrino masses, we look at the possibility of generating maximal/large mixing angles in the total mass matrix, where both the sources have only small mixing angles. We show that in the two generation case, maximal mixing can naturally arise only when the total neutrino mass matrix has a quasi-degenerate pattern. The best way to demonstrate this is by decomposing the quasi-degenerate spectrum in to hierarchial and inverse-hierarchial mass matrices, both with small mixing. Such a decomposition of the quasi-degenerate spectra is in fact very general and can be done irrespective of the mixing present in the mass matrices. With three generations, and two sources, we show that only one or all the three small mixing angles in the total neutrino mass matrix can be converted to maximal/large mixing angles. The decomposition of the degenerate pattern in this case is best realised in to sub-matrices whose dominant eigenvalues have an alternating pattern. On the other hand, it is possible to generate two large and one small mixing angle if either one or both of the sub-matrices contain maximal mixing. We present example textures of this. With three sources of neutrino masses, the results remain almost the same as long as all the sub-matrices contribute equally. The Left-Right Symmetric model where Type I and Type II seesaw mechanisms are related provides a framework where small mixings can be converted to large mixing angles, for degenerate neutrinos.

We evaluate the ratios for the phenomenologically viable intermediate breaking chain $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R (G_{422})$. After a full calculation of the gaugino mass ratios, noting some errors in the earlier calculation for {\bf 54}, we obtain, using the renormalisation group equations (RGE), interesting low scale phenomenology of such breaking patterns. Here, we assume the breaking of the SO(10) GUT group to the intermediate gauge group and that to the Standard Model (SM) take place at the GUT scale itself. We also study the collider signatures in multilepton channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for some selected benchmark points allowed by the cold dark matter relic density constraint provided by the WMAP data and compare these results with the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) framework with similar gluino masses indicating their distinguishability in this regard.

We exhaustively discuss the group-theoretic nature of such operators for the popular SU(5), SO(10), and E(6) models. In particular, for SU(5) only a Higgs in the 200 representation can help bring the couplings to unification below the Planck scale and in consistency with proton decay limits while for a supersymmetric version 24, 75, or 200 representations are all acceptable. The results also have a direct application in non-universality of gaugino masses in a class of supersymmetric models where identical group-theoretic features obtain.

We consider the standard model extended by heavy right handed fermions transforming as triplets under SU(2)$_L$, which generate neutrino masses through the Type-III seesaw mechanism. At energies below their respective mass scales, the heavy fields get sequentially decoupled to give an effective dimension-5 operator. Above their mass thresholds, these fields also participate in the renormalization of the wavefunctions, masses and coupling constants. We compute the renormalization group evolution of the effective neutrino mass matrix in this model, with particular emphasis on the threshold effects. The evolution equations are obtained in a basis of neutrino parameters where all the quantities are well-defined everywhere, including at $θ_{13} = 0$. We also point out the important role of the threshold effects and Majorana phases in the evolution of mixing angles through illustrative examples.
