We study the production of $J/ψ+c\bar{c}$ in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through two virtual photons. The cross section is estimated to be 23 fb at $\sqrt{s}=10.6$ GeV, which is smaller by a factor of six than the calculated cross section for the same process but through one virtual photon. As a result, while the annihilation into two photons may be important for certain exclusive production processes, the big gap between the inclusive production cross section $σ(e^+e^- \to J/ψ+ c\bar{c})\simeq$ 0.9pb observed by Belle and the current nonrelativistic QCD prediction of $\simeq$0.15pb still remains very puzzling. We find, however, as the center-of-mass energy increases ($\sqrt{s}>20$ GeV) the production through two virtual photons $e^+e^- \to 2γ^* \to J/ψ+ c\bar{c}$ will prevail over that through one virtual photon, because in the former process the photon fragmentation into $J/ψ$ and into the charmed quark pair becomes more important at higher energies.

Quantum oscillations of the spin conductance through regular and chaotic 2D quantum dots under the varying Rashba spin orbit interaction and at zero magnetic field have been numerically calculated by summing up the spin evolution matrices for classical transmitting trajectories. Fourier analysis of these oscillations showed power spectra strongly dependent on the dot geometry. For narrow rings the spectra are dominated by a single peak in accordance with previous analytic results. In other geometries the spectra are represented by multiple peaks for regular QD and quasicontinuum for chaotic QD.

We present a unified approach for calculating the properties of shallow donors inside or outside heterostructure quantum wells. The method allows us to obtain not only the binding energies of all localized states of any symmetry, but also the energy width of the resonant states which may appear when a localized state becomes degenerate with the continuous quantum well subbands. The approach is non-variational, and we are therefore also able to evaluate the wave functions. This is used to calculate the optical absorption spectrum, which is strongly non-isotropic due to the selection rules. The results obtained from calculations for Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ quantum wells allow us to present the general behavior of the impurity states, as the donor position is varied from the center of the well to deep inside the barrier. The influence on the donor ground state from both the central-cell effect and the strain arising from the lattice mismatch is carefully considered.

We consider both color-singlet and color-octet contributions, and give the analytical expressions for these cross sections. The complete color-singlet calculations are compared with the approximate fragmentation calculations as functions of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. We find that most of the fragmentation results substantially overestimate the cross sections (e.g. by a factor of $\sim$4 for $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$) at the Belle and BaBar energy $\sqrt{s}=10.6$GeV. The fragmentation results become a good approximation only when $\sqrt{s}$ is higher than about 100GeV. We further calculate the color-octet contributions to these cross sections with analytical expressions. We find that while the color-octet contribution to $J/ψ$ inclusive production via double charm is negligible (only about 3%), the color-octet contributions to $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ can be significant.

The calculated $J/ψ+η_c$ production rate is smaller than the recent Belle data by about an order of magnitude, which might indicate the failure of perturbative QCD calculation to explain the double-charmonium production data. The complete $\cal{O}$$(α^2_{s})$ color-singlet cross section for ${e^++e^-\to χ_{c0}+ c\bar {c}}$ is calculated. In addition, we also evaluate the ratio of exclusive to inclusive production cross sections. The ratio of $J/ψη_c$ production to $J/ψc\bar{c}$ production could be consistent with the experimental data.

Extensive analyses of statistical strong gravitational lensing are performed based on the final Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey (CLASS) well-defined statistical sample of flat spectrum radio sources and current estimates of galaxy luminosity functions per morphological type. The analyses are done under the assumption that galactic lenses are well-approximated by singular isothermal ellipsoids and early-type galaxies evolved passively since redshift $z \sim 1$. Depending on how the late-type galaxy population is treated (i.e., whether its characteristic velocity dispersion is constrained or not), we find for a flat universe with a cosmological constant that the present matter fraction of the present critical density $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.31^{+0.27}_{-0.14}$ (68%) for the unconstrained case or $0.40^{+0.28}_{-0.16}$ (68%) for the constrained case, with an additional systematic uncertainty of $\approx 0.11$ arising from the present uncertainty in the distribution of CLASS sources in redshift and flux density. For a flat universe with a constant equation of state for dark energy w = $p_x$(pressure)/$ρ_x$(energy density), we find that $w < -0.55^{+0.18}_{-0.11}$ (68%) for the unconstrained case or $w < -0.41^{+0.28}_{-0.16}$ (68%) for the constrained case. For the equal frequencies of oblates and prolates, we find that $σ_{*}^{(e)} = 198^{+22}_{-18}$ km s$^{-1}$ (68%) for a `steep' $α^{(e)}=-1$ or $σ_{*}^{(e)} = 181^{+18}_{-15}$ km s$^{-1}$ (68%) for a `shallow' $α^{(e)}=-0.54$. Finally, from the relative frequencies of doubly-imaged sources and quadruply-imaged sources, we find that a mean projected mass ellipticity of early-type galaxies $\barε_{\rm mass} = 0.42$ with a 68% lower limit of 0.28. We report the final results of the search for gravitationally lensed flat-spectrum radio sources found in the combination of CLASS (Cosmic Lens All Sky Survey) and JVAS (Jodrell-Bank VLA Astrometric Survey). VLA observations of 16,503 sources have been made, resulting in the largest sample of arcsec-scale lens systems available. Contained within the 16,503 sources is a complete sample of 11,685 sources having two-point spectral indices between 1.4 and 5 GHz flatter than -0.5 and 5 GHz flux densities $\geq$30 mJy. A subset of 8,958 sources form a well-defined statistical sample suitable for analysis of the lens statistics. We describe the systematic process by which 149 candidate lensed sources were picked from the statistical sample on the basis of possessing multiple compact components in the 0.2 arcsec-resolution VLA maps. Candidates were followed up with 0.05 arcsec resolution MERLIN and 0.003 arcsec VLBA observations at 5 GHz and rejected as lens systems if they failed well-defined surface brightness and/or morphological tests. Maps for all the candidates can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/research/gravlens/index.html We summarize the properties of each of the 22 gravitational lens systems in JVAS/CLASS. Twelve are double-image systems, nine are four-image systems and one is a six-image system. Thirteen constitute a statistically well-defined sample giving a point-source lensing rate of 1:690$\pm$190. The interpretation of the results in terms of the properties of the lensing galaxy population and cosmological parameters will be published elsewhere. (Abridged)

VLBA observations at 5 GHz reveal structures that are consistent with the gravitational lens hypothesis. The brighter of the two images is resolved into a linear string of at least six sub-components whilst the weaker image is radially stretched towards the lens galaxy. UKIRT K-band imaging detects an 18.7 mag extended object, but the resolution of the observations is not sufficient to resolve the lensed images and the lens galaxy. Mass modelling has not been possible with the present data and the acquisition of high-resolution optical data is a priority for this system.

The others have only one horizon, a black hole horizon. Using this model, we calculate all thermodynamic quantities containing the background geometric effect and show that entropy is proportional to area of each boundary. Furthermore, we show that the Cardy-Verlinde formula can be rederived from the physical quantities of the brick wall method and this fact becomes a evidence of the dS/CFT correspondence.

For $B\to χ_{c0} K$ decay, we find that aside from the logarithmic divergences arising from spectator interactions at leading-twist order, more importantly, the factorization will break down due to the infrared divergence arising from nonfactorizable vertex corrections, which is independent of the specific form of the light-cone distribution functions. Our results may indicate that QCD factorization in the present form may not be safely applied to $B$-meson exclusive decays to charmonium states.

We have also discovered a quantized universal spin relaxation in a 2D reservoir connected to such a semiconductor loop.

Fourier series solutions to the deflection and magnification by a family of three-dimensional cusped two power-law ellipsoidal mass distributions are presented. The cusped two power-law ellipsoidal mass distributions are characterized by inner and outer power-law radial indices and a break (or, transition) radius. The model family includes mass models mimicking Jaffe, Hernquist, and $η$ models and dark matter halo profiles from numerical simulations. The Fourier series solutions for the cusped two power-law mass distributions are relatively simple, and allow a very fast calculation even for a chosen small fractional calculational error (e.g. $10^{-5}$). These results will be particularly useful for studying lensed systems which provide a number of accurate lensing constraints and for systematic analyses of large numbers of lenses. Subroutines employing these results for the two power-law model and the results by Chae, Khersonsky, & Turnshek for the generalized single power-law mass model are made publicly available.

Spin polarization is created in the quantum well by radiative electron-hole recombination when the conduction electron momentum distribution is shifted with respect to the momentum distribution of holes in the spin split valence subbands. Spin current appears when the spin polarization is injected from the quantum well into the $n$-doped region of the $pn$ junction. The accompanied emission of circularly polarized light from the quantum well can serve as a spin polarization detector.

We report the results of HST WFPC2 broadband F555W and F702W photometric and F555W polarimetric observations of the "Cloverleaf" QSO H1413+1143. This is a four-component gravitationally-lensed broad absorption line (BAL) QSO. Observations were obtained at two epochs in March 1999 and June 1999 separated by about 100 days. The goal of our program was to detect any relative changes among the components and between the two epochs. Over this time baseline we detected an approximately 0.07 mag dimming in component D of the lensed image, which we interpret as evidence for microlensing. In March 1999 we find significant evidence for a difference in the relative linear polarization of component D in comparison to the other three components; in June 1999 the combined polarization of the Cloverleaf components was lower. In March 1999 the apparently microlensed component D has a rotated polarization position angle and a somewhat higher degree of polarization than the other three components. We suggest that this difference in polarization is due to microlensing magnification of part of a scattered-light (i.e. polarized) continuum-producing region. The results indicate that in the Cloverleaf the size-scale of the polarized scattered-light region exceeds about 10^{16} cm but lies interior to the region producing the broad emission lines (< 10^{18} cm).

For our investigation, we use possible lensing constraints derived from a wealth of data on the radio sources obtained with VLA, MERLIN, VLBA and EVN as well as HST imaging data on the two galaxies, which are presented in Augusto et al. In the present study, we focus on reproducing the widest separated, observationally similar radio components A and D as lensed images. We first treat G2 (which is the more distant one from the geometric centre) as a shear term, and then consider two plane lensing explicitly including G2's potential at the $z_2$ plane as the first case of two plane lens modelling. Our modelling results not only support the hypothesis that the system includes gravitationally lensed images of a higher redshift extragalactic object, but they also show that the explicit inclusion of G2's potential at the second lens plane is necessary in order to fit the data with astrophysically plausible galaxy parameters. Finally, we illustrate a natural consequence of a two-plane lens system, namely the prediction of distortion as well as shift and stretching of G2's isophotes by G1's potential, which can in principle be measured by subtracting out G1's light distribution in a high S/N and good angular resolution image, especially a multi-colour one.

Within the considered parameter space, we find that: (a) the new physics effects from new gluonic penguin diagrams strongly dominate over those from the new $γ$- and $Z^0$- penguin diagrams; (b) in models I and II, new physics contributions to most studied B meson decay channels are rather small in size: from -15% to 20%; (c) in model III, however, the new physics enhancements to the penguin-dominated decay modes can be significant, $\sim (30 -200)%$, and therefore are measurable in forthcoming high precision B experiments; (d) the new physics enhancements to ratios ${\cal B}(B \to K \etap)$ are significant in model III, $\sim (35 -70)%$, and hence provide a simple and plausible new physics interpretation for the observed unexpectedly large $B \to K \etap $ decay rates; (e) the theoretical predictions for ${\cal B}(B \to K^+ π)$ and ${\cal B}(B \to K^0 π^+)$ in model III are still consistent with the data within $2σ$ errors; (f) the significant new physics enhancements to the branching ratios of $B \to K^0 π^0, K^* η, K^{*+} π^-, K^+ φ, K^{*0} ω, K^{*+} φ$ and $K^{*0} φ$ decays are helpful to improve the agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions; (g) the theoretical predictions of ${\cal B}(B \to PP, PV, VV)$ in the 2HDM's are generally consistent with experimental measurements and upper limits ($90% C.L.$)

In the color-singlet $k_t$ factorization approach, for both $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ productions, the helicity $h=0$ states dominate over other helicity states at large $p_T$. These properties are very useful in distinguishing between the two production mechanisms which are related to the interesting issue of $Jψ$ and $ψ'$ polarizations, and may provide a crucial test for the $k_t$ factorization approach.

For the inclusive production distributions, we find that the color-singlet contributions are consistent with the experimental data in the major region of z (z>0.4). Only in low z regions, there are some hints of the need of the color-octet contributions to describe the experimental data. For the polarization of J/psi in DIS processes, we find the parameter alpha changes with Q^2. Especially, at higher Q^2, difference on alpha between color-singlet and color-octet contributions become more distinctive. In the two regions of lower and larger z, the polarization parameter alpha have different features. These properties can provide important information on the polarization mechanism for J/psi production.

The dominant contribution comes from the color-octet ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ subprocess. The nonperturbative color-octet matrix element of ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ of $η_c$ is related to that of ${}^3S_1^{(8)}$ of $J/ψ$ by heavy quark spin symmetry, and the latter can be determined from the direct production of $J/ψ$ at large transverse momentum at the Fermilab Tevatron. In the framework of general two-Higgs-doublet models, we calculate the branching ratios of various inclusive charmless b decays by using the low energy effective Hamiltonian including next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and examine the current status and the new physics effects on the determination of the charm multiplicity $n_c$ and semileptonic branching ratio $B_{SL}$. Within the considered parameter space, the enhancement to the ratio $BR(b \to s g)$ due to the charged-Higgs penguins can be as large as a factor of 8 (3) in the model III (II), while the ratio $BR(b \to no charm)$ can be increased from the standard model prediction of 2.49% to 4.91% (2.99%) in the model III (II). Consequently, the value of $B_{SL}$ and $n_c$ can be decreased simultaneously in the model III. The central value of $B_{SL}$ will be lowered slightly by about 0.003, but the ratio $n_c$ can be reduced significantly from the theoretical prediction of $n_c= 1.28 \pm 0.05$ in the SM to $n_c= 1.23 \pm 0.05$, $1.18 \pm 0.05$ for $m_{H^+}=200, 100$ GeV, respectively. We find that the predicted $n_c$ and the measured $n_c$ now agree within roughly one standard deviation after taking into account the effects of gluonic charged Higgs penguins in the model III with a relatively light charged Higgs boson.

The unusual hybridization of the conduction band states in InAs layers with the valence band states in GaSb layers has been analyzed in details. We have studied the dependence of optical matrix elements on the degree of conduction-valence hybridization, the tuning of hybridization by varying the width of the GaSb layers and/or InAs layers, and the sensitivity of quantized levels to this tuning. Large spin-orbit splitting in energy bands has been demonstrated. Our calculation can serve as a theoretical modeling for infrared lasers based on broken gap quantum well heterostructures.

The gravitational lens 0957+561 is modeled utilizing recent observations of the galaxy and the cluster as well as previous VLBI radio data which have been re-analyzed recently. The galaxy is modeled by a power-law elliptical mass density with a small core while the cluster is modeled by a non-singular power-law sphere as indicated by recent observations. Using all of the current available data, the best-fit model has a reduced chi-squared of approximately 6 where the chi-squared value is dominated by a small portion of the observational constraints used; this value of the reduced chi-squared is similar to that of the recent FGSE best-fit model by Barkana et al. However, the derived value of the Hubble constant is significantly different from the value derived from the FGSE model. We find that the value of the Hubble constant is given by H_0 = 69 +18/-12 (1-K) and 74 +18/-17 (1-K) km/s/Mpc with and without a constraint on the cluster's mass, respectively, where K is the convergence of the cluster at the position of the galaxy and the range for each value is defined by Delta chi-squared = reduced chi-squared. Presently, the best achievable fit for this system is not as good as for PG 1115+080, which also has recently been used to constrain the Hubble constant, and the degeneracy is large. Possibilities for improving the fit and reducing the degeneracy are discussed.

We find that for the gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for this process at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution function by the usual diagonal gluon distribution.

We also use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the diffractive charm jet production at hadron colliders, by which we reproduce the leading logarithmic approximation result of this process we previously calculated.

We find that: (a) the unit-charged top-pion $\tildeπ^\pm$ and b-pion $\tilde{H}^\pm$ can provide large contributions to the rare K-decays if they are relatively light; (b) the size of mixing elements $D_{L,R}^{ij}$ ($i \neq j$) is strongly constrained by the data of $B^0$ meson mixing: $|a_R^{ts}|, |a_R^{td}| < 0.01$ for $a_L^{td}=a_L^{ts}=1/2$ and $m_{\tilde{H}^0}\leq 600GeV$; (c) the enhancements to the branching ratios of rare K-decays from new scalars can be as large as one order of magnitude; (d) there is a strong cancellation between the short- and long-distance dispersive part of the decay $K_L \to μ^+ μ^-$, the constraint on the new short-distance part from this decay mode is thus not strong; (e) the typical TC2 model under study is generally consistent with the available rare K-decay data.

We have used the method of generating functional in imaginary time to derive the current-voltage characteristics of a tunnel junction with arbitrary tunneling conductance, connected in series with an external impedance and a voltage source. We have shown that via the renormalized charging energy and the renormalized environment conductance, our nonperturbative expressions of the total action can be mapped onto the corresponding perturbative formulas. This provides a straightforward way to go beyond the perturbation theory. For the impedance being a pure resistance, we have calculated the conductance for various voltages and temperatures, and the results agree very well with experiments.

We present a calculation for the photoproduction of $η_c$ under the framework of NRQCD factorization formalism. We find a quite unique feature that the color-singlet contribution to this process vanishes at not only the leading order but also the next to leading order perturbative QCD calculations and that the dominant contribution comes from the color-octet ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ subprocess. The nonperturbative color-octet matrix element of ${}^1S_0^{(8)}$ of $η_c$ is related to that of ${}^3S_1^{(8)}$ of $J/ψ$ by the heavy quark spin symmetry, and the latter can be determined from the direct production of $J/ψ$ at large transverse momentum at the Fermilib Tevatron. We then conclude that the measurement of this process may clarify the existing conflict between the color-octet prediction and the experimental result on the $J/ψ$ photoprodution.

Taking into account the spin precession caused by the spin-orbit splitting of the conduction band in semiconductor quantum wells, we have calculated the Fourier spectra of conductance and state-density correlators in a 2D ring, in order to investigate the structure of the main peak corresponding to Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. In narrow rings the peak structure is determined by the competition between the spin-orbit and the Zeeman couplings. The latter leads to a peak broadening, and produces the peak splitting in the state-density Fourier spectrum. We have found an oscillation of the peak intensity as a function of the spin-orbit coupling constant, and this effect of the quantum interference caused by the spin geometric phase is destroyed with increasing Zeeman coupling.

We present a calculation of diffractive charm jet production at hadron colliders in perturbative QCD based on the two-gluon exchange model. Differing from the previous calculations, we abandon the use of the effective color-singlet vitual gluon simplification, and use the real gluon in the calculations for the partonic process. We find the final result is free of the linear singularities due to the small transverse momenta of the exchanged two gluons. In the leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) in QCD, this process is related to the off-diagonal gluon density in the proton. As a result, this process may provide a wide window for testing the two-gluon exchange model, and may be particularly useful in studying the small $x$ physics. In comparison, the diffractive bottom jet production is also discussed, and is found to be important only for large transverse momentum of the jet.

We investigate gravitational lens models for the quadruply-lensed Cloverleaf BAL QSO H1413+1143 based on the HST WFPC/WFPC2 astrometric and photometric data of the system by Turnshek et al. and the HST NICMOS-2 data by Falco et al. The accurate image positions and the dust-extinction-corrected relative amplifications, along with a possible detection of the lensing galaxy in the infrared, permit more accurate lens models than were previously possible. While more recent models are qualitatively consistent with the HST data, none of the previous models considered the dust-extinction-corrected relative amplifications of the image components. We use the power-law elliptical mass model to fit the HST data. We find that a single elliptical galaxy perturbed by an external shear can fit the image positions within the observational uncertainties; however, the predicted relative magnifications are only roughly consistent with the observational relative amplifications. We find that a primary galaxy combined with a secondary galaxy in the vicinity of the Cloverleaf or a cluster centered (south-)west of the Cloverleaf can fit both the image positions and relative amplifications within the observational uncertainties. We discuss future observations which could be used to test and/or further constrain lens models of the Cloverleaf.
