In heavy quarkonium production, the measured ratio $R_{c \bar c}=σ[J/ψ+ c\bar c + X]/σ[J/ψ+X]$ at B factories is much larger than existing theoretical predictions. In heavy quarkonium production, the measured ratio $R_{c \bar c}=σ[J/ψ+ c\bar c + X]/σ[J/ψ+X]$ at B factories is much larger than existing theoretical predictions. To clarify this discrepancy, in nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) we find the next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD correction to $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+gg$ can enhance the cross section by about 20%. Together with the calculated NLO result for $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+c\bar c$, we show that the NLO corrections can significantly improve the fit to the ratio $R_{c \bar c}$. The effects of leading logarithm resummation near the end point on the $J/ψ$ momentum distribution and total cross section are also considered. Comparison of the calculated cross section for $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+gg$ with observed cross section for $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+non(c\bar c)$ is expected to provide unique information on the issue of color-octet contributions.

Non-uniform shaped nanoparticles (diameter ~ 20-70 nm) are also observed at an annealing temperature of 950 oC with lower gases flow rate (Ar = 100 ml/min and H2 = 75 ml/min). Nanoparticles are characterized in detail by field-emission electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques. HRTEM study shows well resolved (110) fringes corresponding to <alpha>-Fe2O3, and selected area diffraction pattern (SADP) confirms the crystalline nature of <alpha>-Fe2O3 polyhedral nanoparticles. It is observed that polyhedral formation of <alpha>-Fe2O3 nano crystals depends upon annealing temperature and the surface morphology highly rely on the gas flow rate inside the reaction chamber.

We study galaxy evolution from z=1 to z=0 as a function of velocity dispersion sigma for galaxies with sigma > 95 km/s based on the measured and Monte Carlo realised local velocity dispersion functions (VDFs) of galaxies and the revised statistical properties of 30 strongly-lensed sources. We assume that the total (luminous plus dark) mass profile of a galaxy is isothermal in the optical region for 0 < z < 1 as suggested by mass modelling of lensing galaxies. For the evolutionary behaviours of the VDFs we find that: (1) the number density of massive (mostly early-type) galaxies with sigma > 200 km/s evolves differentially in the way that the number density evolution is greater at a higher velocity dispersion; (2) the number density of intermediate and low mass early-type galaxies (95 km/s < sigma < 200 km/s) is nearly constant; (3) the late-type VDF transformed from the Monte Carlo realised circular velocity function is consistent with no evolution in its shape or integrated number density consistent with galaxy survey results. These evolutionary behaviours of the VDFs are strikingly similar to those of the dark halo mass function (DMF) from N-body simulations and the stellar mass function (SMF) predicted by recent semi-analytic models of galaxy formation under the current LambdaCDM hierarchical structure formation paradigm. Interestingly, the VDF evolutions appear to be qualitatively different from ``stellar mass-downsizing'' evolutions obtained by many galaxy surveys. The coevolution of the DMF, the VDF and the SMF is investigated in quantitative detail in a following paper. We consider several possible systematic errors for the lensing analysis and find that they are not likely to alter the conclusions.(abridged)

By the latest result of Chan \cite{Chan}, $T(n')=O(n'^3 \frac{(\log\log n')^3}{(\log n')^2})$, so our algorithm runs in subquadratic time $O(nL_s\frac{(\log\log L_s)^3}{(\log L_s)^2})$.

We find that the short distance coefficient of the color-octet piece is much larger than the color-singlet piece, and that the QCD correction will change the endpoint behavior of the charm quark jet. The color-singlet piece is strongly affected by the one-loop QCD correction. In contrast, the QCD correction to the color-octet piece is weak. Once the experiment can measure the branching ratio and energy distribution of the two-charm quark jets in the $Υ$ decay, the result can be used to test the color octet mechanism or give a strong constraint on the color-octet matrix elements.

The widths of the $η$ transitions of $Υ(5S)$ are found to be sensitive to the coupling constants $g_{Υ(5S)B^{(*)}B^{(*)}}$ due to a large cancelation between contributions from the $B\bar{B}$, $B^*\bar{B}+c.c.$, and $B^*\bar{B}^*$ channels, and only a rough estimate $Γ(Υ(5S)\toΥ(1S,2S)η)=10{-}200$ KeV can be given. The widths of the $η'$ transitions of $Υ(4S,5S)$ are also discussed, and they could be much smaller than that of the corresponding $η$ transitions mainly due to the tiny phase space.

We find that the energy distributions of $Υ(1S,2S,3S)π^+π^-$ markedly differ from that of $Υ(5S)\to B^{(*)}\bar{B}^{(*)}$. In particular, the resonance peak will be pushed up by about 7-20 MeV for these dipion transitions relative to the main hadronic decay modes. These predictions can be used to test the final state rescattering mechanism in hadronic transitions for heavy quarkonia above the open flavor thresholds.

In contrast to the failure of factorization in most cases involving P-wave states, e.g. in B decays, we find that factorization holds in this process at next to leading order (NLO) in $α_s$ and leading order (LO) in $v$, where the associated S-wave state plays a crucial rule in canceling the infrared (IR) divergences. We also give some general analyses for factorization in various double charmonium production. The NLO corrections in $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ(ψ(2S)) +χ_{c0}$ at $\sqrt{s}=10.6$ GeV are found to substantially enhance the cross sections by a factor of about 2.8; hence crucially reduce the large discrepancy between theory and experiment. With $m_c=1.5{\rm GeV}$ and $μ=2m_c$, the NLO cross sections are estimated to be $17.9(11.3)$ fb for $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ(ψ(2S))+ χ_{c0}$, which reach the lower bounds of experiment.

In order to explain the observed unusually large dipion transition rates of $Υ(10870)$, the scalar resonance contributions in the re-scattering model to the dipion transitions of $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ are studied. Since the imaginary part of the re-scattering amplitude is expected to be dominant, the large ratios of the transition rates of $Υ(10870)$, which is identified with $Υ(5S)$, to that of $Υ(4S)$ can be understood as mainly coming from the difference between the $p$-values in their decays into open bottom channels, and the ratios are estimated numerically to be about 200-600 with reasonable choices of parameters. The absolute and relative rates of $Υ(5S)\toΥ(1S,2S,3S)π^+π^-$ and $Υ(5S)\toΥ(1S)K^+K^-$ are roughly consistent with data. We emphasize that the dipion transitions observed for some of the newly discovered $Y$ states associated with charmonia may have similar features to the dipion transitions of $Υ(5S)$. Measurements on the dipion transitions of $Υ(6S)$ could provide further test for this mechanism.

Belle Collaboration has recently observed a new state, the X(4160), in the process of double charm production $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+X(4160)$ followed by $X(4160)\to D^*\bar{D^*}$. We discuss possible interpretations for the X(4160) based on the NRQCD calculations and the potential model estimates for the charmonium spectrum. We first focus on the D-wave spin-singlet $2^{-+}$ charmonium $^1D_2(2D)$, which is estimated to have a small production rate of about 5% of that for $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+η_c(1S)$, and therefore is incompatible with the observed data for X(4160). We then discuss the possibility that the X(4160) is the known $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ charmonium state $ψ(4160)$, which can be produced via two photon fragmentation, but the production rate is much smaller than observed for $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+X(4160)$. In contrast to above two possibilities, the $η_c(4S)$ assignment is a likely one, which is supported by the observed relatively large production rate and non-observation of $D\bar D$ decay of X(4160), but we have to understand why $η_c(4S)$ has such a low mass, which deserves further studies. The P-wave excited state $χ_{c0}(3P)$ is also an interesting candidate, if the observed broad peak around 3.8-3.9 GeV in the recoil mass of $D\bar D$ against $J/ψ$ in $e^++e^-\to J/ψ+D\bar D$ is due to the $χ_{c0}(2P)$ state. Measurements of production angular distributions will be helpful to distinguish between $η_c(4S)$ and $χ_{c0}(3P)$ assignments. Production mechanisms in nonrelativistic QCD are emphasized.

We evaluate the dispersive part, as well as the absorptive one, of the re-scattering amplitude and find that the contribution from the dispersive part is dominant even when X(3872) lies above the threshold of the neutral channel $th_n=m_{D^0}+m_{D^{*0}}$. We predict $R_{ρ/ω}\simeq 1$ for the $m_X$ region scanned by experiments. Meanwhile, we also estimate the rate of $X\to D^0\bar{D}^{0}π^0$. Our results favor a charmonium interpretation of X(3872) when it lies slightly below the threshold of $D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$. Furthermore, we evaluated the width of $X\to J/ψρ$ with the help of a phenomenological effective coupling constant $g_X$, and find the total width of X(3872) to be in the range of 1-2 MeV.

In order to clarify the puzzling problems in double charm production, relativistic corrections at order $v^{2}$ to the processes $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+η_{c}$ and $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+c\bar{c}$ at B factories are studied in non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics. The short-distance parts of production cross sections are calculated perturbatively, while the long-distance matrix elements are estimated from $J/ψ$ and $η_c$ decays up to errors of order $v^4$. Our results show that the relativistic correction to the exclusive process $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+η_{c}$ is significant, which, when combined together with the next-to-leading order $α_{s}$ corrections, could resolve the large discrepancy between theory and experiment; whereas for the inclusive process $e^{+}e^{-}\to J/ψ+c\bar{c}$ the relativistic correction is tiny and negligible. The physical reason for the above difference between exclusive and inclusive processes largely lies in the fact that in the exclusive process the relative momentum between quarks in charmonium substantially reduces the virtuality of the gluon that converts into a charm quark pair, but this is not the case for the inclusive process, in which the charm quark fragmentation $c\to J/ψ+c$ is significant, and QCD radiative corrections can be more essential.

As a phenomenological model study, we further extend our calculation to the radiative decays of bottomonia into light mesons by assuming the $f_2(1270)$, $f_2'(1525)$ and other light mesons to be described by nonrelativistic $q\bar q ~(q=u,d,s)$ bound states with constituent quark masses. The calculated branching ratios for $Υ\to f_2(1270)γ$ and $Υ\to f_2'(1525)γ$ are roughly consistent with the CLEO data. Comparisons with radiative decays of charmonium into light mesons such as $J/ψ\to f_2(1270)γ$ are also given. In all calculations the QED contributions are taken into account and found to be significant in some processes.

The observed cross section of this double charm production process is larger than existing leading order (LO) QCD predictions by a factor of 5. In the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD virtual and real corrections to this process, and find that these corrections can substantially enhance the cross section with a $K$ factor of about 1.8. We further take into account the feeddown contributions from higher charmonium states (mainly the $ψ(2S)$ as well as $χ_{cJ}$) and the two-photon contributions, and find that the discrepancy between theory and experiment can be largely removed.

With the jet energy cut of about 1 GeV, and the jet angle cut of about $36^\circ$, the branching ratio for $Υ\toγq\bar q$ is found to be $8.2\times 10^{-4}$ from color singlet contributions. The color octet contributions could be much larger than that of color singlet, depending on the estimate of the color octet matrix elements. We study this puzzling process in the QCD factorization approach with the effect of S-D mixing considered. We find that the soft scattering effects in the spectator interactions play an essential role. With a proper parametrization for the higher twist soft end-point singularities associated with kaon, and with the S-D mixing angle $θ=-12^{\circ}$, the calculated decay rates can be close to the data. Implications of these soft spectator effects to other charmonium production in $B$ exclusive decays are also emphasized.

Semi-analytical models of galaxy formation can be used to predict the evolution of the number density of early-type galaxies as a function of the circular velocity at the virial radius, v_{c,vir}. Gravitational lensing probability and separation distribution on the other hand are sensitive to the velocity dispersion (or circular velocity) at about the effective radius. We adopt the singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) lens model to estimate the velocity dispersion at the effective radius. We use radio lenses from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey and the PMN-NVSS Extragalactic Lens Survey to study how the velocity dispersions, σ_SIE, are related to v_{c,vir}. When we include both the lensing probability and separation distribution as our lensing constraints, we find σ_SIE /(200\kms) =
[(1.17_{-0.26}^{+0.40}) v_{c,vir}/ (200\kms)]^{0.22^{+0.05}_{-0.04}} for 200\kms \la σ_SIE \la 260\kms; at σ_SIE = 200\kms, the ratio \sqrt{2} σ_SIE / v_{c,vir} is about 1.65^{+0.57}_{-0.37} (68% CL) but decreases to 0.65_{-0.12}^{+0.15} (68% CL) for σ_SIE = 260\kms. These results are consistent with those of Seljak (2002) obtained from galaxy-galaxy weak lensing for galaxies of around L_*. However, our results clearly suggest that the ratio must vary significantly as σ_SIE is varied and are marginally discrepant with the Seljak results at σ_SIE = 260\kms. The scaling σ_SIE \propto v_{c,vir}^{0.22\pm 0.05} is broadly consistent with those from galaxy occupation statistics studies and the most recent galaxy-galaxy weak lensing study. (Abridged)

Just below the susceptibility peak there is a regime exhibiting rejuvenation but little memory. At lower temperature, there is a regime with mainly cumulative aging, expected for simple domain-growth. At still lower temperature, there is a regime with both rejuvenation and memory, reminiscent of spin glasses. PMN/PT (88/12) is also found to exhibit some of these aging regimes. This qualitative aging behavior is reminiscent of that seen in reentrant ferromagnets, which exhibit a crossover from a domain-growth ferromagnetic regime into a reentrant spin glass regime at lower temperatures. These striking parallels suggest a picture of competition in PMN/PT (90/10) between ferroelectric correlations formed in the domain-growth regime with glassy correlations formed in the spin glass regime. PMN/PT (90/10) is also found to exhibit frequency-aging time scaling of the time-dependent part of the out-of-phase susceptibility for temperatures 260 K and below. The stability of aging effects to thermal cycles and field perturbations is also reported.

Abstract:
BES Collaboration has recently observed an enhancement near the $ωφ$ threshold in the double OZI suppressed decay $J/ψ\toγωφ$. This $ωφ$ enhancement is probably due to a new $J^{PC}=0^{++}$ X(1812) state. We discuss a possible assignment that the X(1812) is a $ 1/\sqrt{2}(u\bar u+d\bar d)g$ (or $s\bar sg$) hybrid meson. We suggest further measurements to test these assignments.

We study two body decays of a scalar glueball. We show that in QCD a spin-0 pure glueball (a state only with gluons) cannot decay into a pair of light quarks if chiral symmetry holds exactly, i.e., the decay amplitude is chirally suppressed. However, this chiral suppression does not materialize itself at the hadron level such as in decays into $π^+π^-$ and $K^+K^-$, because in perturbative QCD the glueball couples to two (but not one) light quark pairs that hadronize to two mesons. Using QCD factorization based on an effective Lagrangian, we show that the difference of hadronization into $ππ$ and $KK$ already leads to a large difference between ${\rm Br} (π^+π^-)$ and ${\rm Br}(K^+K^-)$, even the decay amplitude is not chirally suppressed. Moreover, the small ratio of $R={\rm Br}(ππ)/{\rm Br}(K\bar K)$ of $f_0(1710)$ measured in experiment does not imply $f_0(1710)$ to be a pure glueball. With our results it is helpful to understand the partonic contents if ${\rm Br}(ππ)$ or ${\rm Br}(K\bar K)$ is measured reliably.

The measured cross section of $e^+ e^- \to J/ψ+ η_c$ is much larger than leading order (LO) theoretical predictions. With the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD correction to this process. Taking all one-loop self-energy, triangle, box, and pentagon diagrams into account, and factoring the Coulomb-singular term into the $c\bar c$ bound state wave function, we get an ultraviolet and infrared finite correction to the cross section of $e^+e^-\to J/ψ+ η_c$ at $\sqrt{s} =10.6$ GeV. We find that the NLO QCD correction can substantially enhance the cross section with a K factor (the ratio of NLO to LO) of about 1.8-2.1; hence it greatly reduces the large discrepancy between theory and experiment. With $m_c=1.4{\rm GeV}$ and $μ=2m_c$, the NLO cross section is estimated to be 18.9 fb, which reaches to the lower bound of experiment.

We study the unexpectedly large rate for the factorization-forbidden decay $B\to χ_{c0}K$ within the QCD factorization approach. We use a non-zero gluon mass to regularize the infrared divergences in vertex corrections. The end-point singularities arising from spectator corrections are regularized and carefully estimated by the off-shellness of quarks. We find that the contributions arising from the vertex and leading-twist spectator corrections are numerically small, and the twist-3 spectator contribution with chiral enhancement and linear end-point singularity becomes dominant. With reasonable choices for the parameters, the branching ratio for $B\toχ_{c0}K$ decay is estimated to be in the range $(2-4)\times 10^{-4}$, which is compatible with the Belle and BaBar data.

We use the distribution of gravitationally-lensed image separations observed in the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) and the PMN-NVSS Extragalactic Lens Survey (PANELS), which are (nearly) complete for the image separation range $0''.3 \le Δθ\le 6''$, to constrain a model velocity dispersion function (VF) of early-type galaxies. Assuming a current concordance cosmological model and adopting a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) model for galactic potentials, we consider constraining both a characteristic velocity dispersion (parameter $σ_*$) and the shape of the function (parameters $α$ and $β$; Sheth et al. 2003) for $0.3 \la z \la 1 $. If all three parameters are allowed to vary, then none of the parameters can be tightly constrained by the lensing data because of the small size of the sample. If we fix the shape of the function by either the SDSS local stellar VF or an inferred local stellar VF based on the SSRS2 galaxy sample, then the constrained values of $σ_*$ are nearly equal to the corresponding stellar values; we have $f_{\rm SIE/center} (\equiv σ_{*{\rm SIE}}/σ_{*{\rm center}})= 0.90\pm 0.18 {\rm (SDSS)}$ or $1.04 \pm 0.19 {\rm (SSRS2)}$ assuming non-evolution of the function between the present epoch and $z \sim 0.6$. Finally, using only the CLASS statistical sample (Browne et al. 2003) and thus including an absolute multiple-imaging probability, we find that the SDSS stellar VF may have significantly underestimated the abundance of morphologically early-type galaxies.

Mechanisms and conditions for obtaining the stationary spin density and the induced rectified DC spin current are studied.

The spin-Hall conductivity of a disordered 2D electron gas has been calculated for an arbitrary spin-orbit interaction. We have found that in the diffusive regime of electron transport, in accordance with previous calculations, the dc spin-Hall conductivity of a homogeneous system turns to zero due to impurity scattering when the spin-orbit coupling is represented only by the Rashba interaction. However, when the Dresselhaus interaction is taken into account, the spin-Hall current is not zero. We also considered the spin-Hall currents induced by an inhomogeneous electric field. It is shown that a time dependent electric charge induces a vortex of spin-Hall currents.

Abstract:
The large decay rate observed by Belle for $B^+\toψ(3770)K^+$, which is comparable to $B^+\toψ(3686)K^+$, might indicate either an unexpectedly large S-D mixing angle $|θ|\approx 40^o$ or the leading role of the color-octet mechanism in D-wave charmonium production in B decay. By calculating the production rate of $ψ(3770)$ in the continuum $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=10.6$ GeV with these two possible approaches (i.e. the large S-D mixing and the color-octet mechanism), we show that the measurement for this process at Belle and BaBar may provide a clear cut clarification for the two approaches. In addition, the radiative E1 transition ratio $Γ(ψ(3770)\to γχ_{c2})/Γ(ψ(3770)\to γχ_{c1})$ may dramatically change from $\sim$ 0.04 (for $θ\approx 0^o$) to $\sim$ 200 (for $θ\approx -40^o$) due to the large S-D interference effect, thus the E1 transition measurement of $ψ(3770)$ at BES and CLEO-c will also be very useful in clarifying this issue.

We performed path integral simulations of spin evolution controlled by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the semiclassical regime for chaotic and regular quantum dots. The spin polarization dynamics have been found to be strikingly different from the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) spin relaxation in bulk systems. Also an important distinction have been found between long time spin evolutions in classically chaotic and regular systems. In the former case the spin polarization relaxes to zero within relaxation time much larger than the DP relaxation, while in the latter case it evolves to a time independent residual value. The quantum mechanical analysis of the spin evolution based on the exact solution of the Schroedinger equation with Rashba SOI has confirmed the results of the classical simulations for the circular dot, which is expected to be valid in general regular systems. In contrast, the spin relaxation down to zero in chaotic dots contradicts to what have to be expected from quantum mechanics. This signals on importance at long time of the mesoscopic echo effect missed in the semiclassical simulations.

The calculated cross sections for $D^{*+}D^{*-}$ and $D^+D^{*-}$ production are roughly in agreement with the recent Belle data. The helicity decomposition for $D^{*}$ meson production is also calculated. The fraction of the $D^{*\pm}_LD^{*\mp}_T$ final state in $e^+e^-\to D^{*+}D^{*-}$ process is found to be 65%. The fraction of $DD^*_T$ production is 100% and $DD^*_L$ is forbidden in $e^+e^-$ annihilation through one virtual photon. We further consider $e^+e^-$ annihilation through two virtual photons, and then find the fraction of $DD^{*}_T$ in $e^+e^-\to DD^{*}$ process to be about 91%.

We use gravitational lenses from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) to constrain the evolution of galaxies since redshift $z \sim 1$ in the current $\LCDM$ cosmology. This constraint is unique as it is based on a mass-selected lens sample of galaxies. Our method of statistical analysis is the same as in Chae (2003). We parametrise the early-type number density evolution in the form of $(1+z)^{ν_n}$ and the velocity dispersion as $(1+z)^{ν_v}$. We find that $ν_n=-0.11^{+0.82}_{-0.89}$ ($1σ$) if we assume $ν_v =0$, implying that the number density of early-type galaxies is within 50% to 164% of the present-day value at redshift $z=1$. Allowing the velocity dispersion to evolve, we find that $ν_v=-0.4^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ ($1σ$), indicating that the velocity dispersion must be within 57% and 107% of the present-day value at $z=1$. These results are consistent with the early formation and passive evolution of early-type galaxies. More stringent limits from lensing can be obtained from future large lens surveys and by using very high-redshift quasars ($z \ga 5$) such as those found from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

In the framework of QCD factorization, we study the $B$ meson exclusive decays $B\to χ_{cJ}K$ where the spin-triplet P-wave charmonium states $χ_{cJ}(J=0,1,2)$ are described by the color-singlet non-relativistic wave functions. We find that for these decays (except $χ_{c1}$) there are infrared divergences arising from nonfactorizable vertex corrections as well as logarithmic end-point singularities arising from nonfactorizable spectator interactions at leading-twist order. The infrared divergences due to vertex corrections will explicitly break down QCD factorization within the color-singlet model for charmonia. Unlike in the inclusive decays where the higher Fock states with color-octet $c \bar c$ pair and soft gluon can make contributions to remove the infrared divergences, their contributions can not be accommodated in the exclusive two body decays. As a result, the infrared divergences encountered in exclusive processes involving charmonia may raise a new question to the QCD factorization and NRQCD factorization in B exclusive decays.
