Highly dense MgB2 policrystalline bulk materials, obtained by reactive liquid infiltration, have been characterized in their superconducting transport and magnetic properties in magnetic field and in a temperature range of interest for the MgB2 compound. The products have a granular morphology of composite nature and their overall density affects their properties. The irreversibility line, Bc1(T) values, magnetically measured current densities and the trapped magnetic field are evaluated by susceptibility curves and hysteresis curves, both obtained by SQUID magnetometry for samples of different density, up to 35K and up to 5T applied magnetic field. The experimental results have been compared with the best values reported in the literature for other bulk sintering techniques.

MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promising results are obtained, which indicate the possibility of application of these wires as superconductors in the temperature range of 15-30 K and at medium-high values of magnetic field.

We present a study of the electrodynamic response of MgB2 pellets and thin film samples exhibiting critical temperatures ranging between 26 and 38 K. We have performed accurate measurements of the surface impedance ZS =RS+iXS as a function of the temperature and of the magnitude of the electromagnetic field. The temperature variation and the field dependence of ZS was measured by a dielectric resonator cavity technique in the microwave region. In particular, the temperature variation of the magnetic penetration depth was also determined in the RF region by a single coil mutual inductance method. In the case of the films, for T<TC/2 a clear exponential behavior of the penetration depth is observed, which can be explained by a simple BCS s-wave model with a reduced value of the energy gap. On the contrary, pellets show no evidence of saturation, and the experimental results strictly follow a quadratic dependence down to the lowest temperatures. This behavior can be induced by the presence of metallic Mg inclusions that may locally depress the gap. The analysis of the field dependence of the surface impedance in the microwave region confirms that the electrodynamic response of MgB2 is dominated by different sources of dissipation, depending on the sample history, likely to be ascribed to the predominance of grain boundaries or normal regions on its surface.

We studied the voltage and temperature dependency of the dynamic conductance of normal metal-MgB2 junctions obtained either with the point-contact technique (with Au and Pt tips) or by making Ag-paint spots on the surface of high-quality single-crystal-like MgB2 samples. We studied the voltage and temperature dependency of the dynamic conductance of normal metal-MgB2 junctions obtained either with the point-contact technique (with Au and Pt tips) or by making Ag-paint spots on the surface of high-quality single-crystal-like MgB2 samples. The fit of the conductance curves with the generalized BTK model gives evidence of pure s-wave gap symmetry. The temperature dependency of the gap, measured in Ag-paint junctions (dirty limit), follows the standard BCS curve with 2Delta/kTc = 3.3. In out-of-plane, high-pressure point contacts we obtained almost ideal Andreev reflection characteristics showing a single small s-wave gap Delta = 2.6 +/- 0.2 (clean limit). These results support the two-gap model of superconductivity, the presence of a modified layer at the surface of the crystals and an important and non-conventional role of the impurities in MgB2.

We present the first observation of the DC and AC Josephson effect in MgB_2 break junctions. The junctions, obtained at 4.2 K in high-quality, high-density polycrystalline metallic MgB_2 samples, show a non-hysteretic DC Josephson effect. We present the first observation of the DC and AC Josephson effect in MgB_2 break junctions. The junctions, obtained at 4.2 K in high-quality, high-density polycrystalline metallic MgB_2 samples, show a non-hysteretic DC Josephson effect. By irradiating the junctions with microwaves we observe clear Shapiro steps spaced by the ideal $ΔV$ value. The temperature dependence of the DC Josephson current and the dependence of the height of the steps on the microwave power are obtained. These results are a direct prove for the existence of pairs with charge 2e in this new metallic superconductor and give evidence of the superconductor-normal metal-superconductor weak link character of these junctions.

We measured the complex dynamic elastic modulus of MgB2 between 1.3 and 650 K at frequencies included between 5 and 70 kHz. The main purpose of this work is to search for possible lattice instabilities, which could contribute to enhance the electron-phonon coupling. The Young's modulus indeed presents an anomalous softening on cooling below 400 K, and hysteresis between cooling and heating. Such anomalies, however, can be accounted for by intense relaxation processes with maxima between 50 and 150 K, whose nature is not yet clarified, and by geometric defects generated by the anisotropic thermal expansion between the grains during thermal cycling. Additional intense relaxation processes are observed above room temperature, and their possible origin is discussed. The influence of the highly anharmonic in-plane vibration modes of the B atoms on the elastic and anelastic properties of MgB2 is discussed in detail.

An extended magneto-optical (MO) analysis of samples cut from high-density pellets of MgB2 is reported. For sake of comparison some magnetic measurements and critical values are also shown. Notwithstanding the fact that the optical and SEM images exhibit grains with different shape and size, all the samples investigated by MO analysis (three specimens of different shape and size) enter as a whole into a critical state. The current at different temperatures and fields, in a phase zone accessible to MO are calculated by means of a quantitative analysis. The analysis, based on the inversion of the Biot-Savart law, corresponds to three regimes: under-critical, critical and over-critical, respectively. A possible qualitative interpretation of the absence of magnetic granularity is given in the framework of a critical state likely reached by a network of strongly coupled Josephson Junctions.
