The effect of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in quantum wires with hard-wall boundaries is discussed. The exact wave function and eigenvalue equation are worked out pointing out the mixing between the spin and spatial parts. The spectral properties are also studied within the perturbation theory with respect to the strength of the spin-orbit interaction and diagonalization procedure. A comparison is done with the results of a simple model, the two-band model, that takes account only of the first two sub-bands of the wire. Finally, the transport properties within the ballistic regime are analytically calculated for the two-band model and through a tight-binding Green function for the entire system. Single and double interfaces separating regions with different strengths of spin-orbit interaction are analyzed injecting carriers into the first and the second sub-band. It is shown that in the case of a single interface the spin polarization in the Rashba region is different from zero, and in the case of two interfaces the spin polarization shows oscillations due to spin selective bound states.

Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements were performed on La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 thin films both at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature. While no inhomogeneities were recorded at liquid nitrogen temperature on any sample, a clear evidence of spectroscopic inhomogeneities was evident in tunnelling conductance maps collected at room temperature. The investigated films exhibit a transition from a ferromagnetic-metallic to a paramagnetic-insulating state around room temperature, so that the observed spectroscopic features can be interpreted within a phase separation scenario. A quantitative analysis of the observed spectroscopic features is reported pointing out the occurrence of phase modulation and its possible correlation with the properties of the system.

The model is able to reproduce observed features of landslide events, such as power-law distributions, as experimentally reported. We analyze the key role of the driving rate and show that, as it is increased, a crossover from power-law to non power-law behaviors occurs. Finally, a systematic investigation of the model on varying its anisotropy factors is performed and the full diagram of its dynamical behaviors is presented.

Landslide inventories show that the statistical distribution of the area of recorded events is well described by a power law over a range of decades. To understand these distributions, we consider a cellular automaton to model a time and position dependent factor of safety. The model is able to reproduce the complex structure of landslide distribution, as experimentally reported. In particular, we investigate the role of the rate of change of the system dynamical variables, induced by an external drive, on landslide modeling and its implications on hazard assessment. As the rate is increased, the model has a crossover from a critical regime with power-laws to non power-law behaviors. We suggest that the detection of patterns of correlated domains in monitored regions can be crucial to identify the response of the system to perturbations, i.e., for hazard assessment.

In this paper we study the quantum phase transition between the insulating and the globally coherent superfluid phases in the Bose-Hubbard model with T_3 structure, the "dice lattice". Even in the absence of any frustration the superfluid phase is characterized by modulation of the order parameter on the different sublattices of the T_3 structure. The zero-temperature critical point as a function of a magnetic field shows the characteristic "butterfly" form. At fully frustration the superfluid region is strongly suppressed. In addition, due to the existence of the Aharonov-Bohm cages at f=1/2, we find evidence for the existence of an intermediate insulating phase characterized by a zero superfluid stiffness but finite compressibility. In this intermediate phase bosons are localized due to the external frustration and the topology of the T_3 lattice. We name this new phase the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) insulator. In the presence of charge frustration the phase diagram acquires the typical lobe-structure. The form and hierarchy of the Mott insulating states with fractional fillings, is dictated by the particular topology of the T_3 lattice. The results presented in this paper were obtained by a variety of analytical methods: mean-field and variational techniques to approach the phase boundary from the superconducting side, and a strongly coupled expansion appropriate for the Mott insulating region. In addition we performed Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the corresponding (2+1)D XY model to corroborate the analytical calculations with a more accurate quantitative analysis. We finally discuss experimental realization of the T_3 lattice both with optical lattices and with Josephson junction arrays.

We present a formalism to study quantum networks made up by single-channel quantum wires in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and magnetic field. In particular, linear transport through one-dimensional and two-dimensional finite-size networks is studied by means of the scattering formalism. In some particular quantum networks, the action of the magnetic field or of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induces localization of the electron wave function. This phenomenon, which relies on both the quantum-mechanical interference and the geometry of the network, is manifested through the suppression of the conductance for specific values of the spin-orbit-coupling strength or of the magnetic field. Furthermore, the interplay of the Aharonov-Bohm phases and of the non-Abelian phases introduced by spin-orbit coupling, is discussed in a number of cases.

The role of the electron-phonon interaction in the Holstein-Hubbard model is investigated in the metallic phase close to the Mott transition and in the insulating Mott phase. The model is studied by means of a variational slave boson technique. At half-filling, mean-field static quantities are in good agreement with the results obtained by numerical techniques. By taking into account gaussian fluctuations, an analytic expression of the spectral density is derived in the Mott insulating phase showing that an increase of the electron-phonon coupling leads to a sensitive reduction of the Mott gap through a reduced effective repulsion. The relation of the results with recent experimental observations in strongly correlated systems is discussed.

The ground-state energy, the spectral weight, the average kinetic energy, the mean number of phonons, and the electron-lattice correlation function are discussed for the system with coupling to local and nearest neighbor lattice displacements comparing the results with the long range case. For large values of the coupling with nearest neighbor sites, most physical quantities show a strong resemblance with those obtained for the long range electron-phonon interaction. Moreover, for intermediate values of interaction strength, the correlation function between electron and nearest neighbor lattice displacements is characterized by an upturn as function of the electron-phonon coupling constant.

The resistivity of thin $La_{0.7}A_{0.3}MnO_{3}$ films ($A=Ca, Sr$) is investigated in a wide temperature range. The comparison of the resistivities is made among films grown by different techniques and on several substrates allowing to analyze samples with different amounts of disorder. In the low-temperature nearly half-metallic ferromagnetic state the prominent contribution to the resistivity scales as $T^α$ with $α\simeq 2.5$ for intermediate strengths of disorder supporting the theoretical proposal of single magnon scattering in presence of minority spin states localized by the disorder. For large values of disorder the low-temperature behavior of the resistivity is well described by the law $T^{3}$ characteristic of anomalous single magnon scattering processes, while in the regime of low disorder the $α$ exponent tends to a value near 2. In the high temperature insulating paramagnetic phase the resistivity shows the activated behavior characteristic of polaronic carriers. Finally in the whole range of temperatures the experimental data are found to be consistent with a phase separation scenario also in films doped with strontium ($A=Sr$).

We demonstrate how the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor heterostructures can produce and control a spin-polarized current without ferromagnetic leads. Key idea is to use spin-double refraction of an electronic beam with a nonzero incidence angle. A region where the spin-orbit coupling is present separates the source and the drain without spin-orbit coupling. We show how the transmission and the beam spin-polarization critically depend on the incidence angle. The transmission halves when the incidence angle is greater than a limit angle and a significant spin-polarization appears. Increasing the spin-orbit coupling one can obtain the modulation of the intensity and of the spin-polarization of the output electronic current when the input current is unpolarized. Our analysis shows the possibility to realize a spin-field-effect transistor based on the propagation of only one mode with the region with spin-orbit coupling. Where the original Datta and Das device [Appl.Phys.Lett. {\bf 56}, 665 (1990)] use the spin-precession that originates from the interference between two modes with orthogonal spin.

Thickness dependence and strain effects in films of $La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3$ perovskites are analyzed in the colossal magnetoresistance regime. The calculations are based on a generalization of a variational approach previously proposed for the study of manganite bulk. It is found that a reduction in the thickness of the film causes a decrease of critical temperature and magnetization, and an increase of resistivity at low temperatures. The strain is introduced through the modifications of in-plane and out-of-plane electron hop** amplitudes due to substrate-induced distortions of the film unit cell. The strain effects on the transition temperature and transport properties are in good agreement with experimental data only if the dependence of the hop** matrix elements on the $Mn-O-Mn$ bond angle is properly taken into account. The optical properties of the charge-ordering ($CO$) phase of the one-dimensional (1D) half-filled spinless Holstein model are derived at zero temperature within a well-known variational approach improved including second-order lattice fluctuations. Within the $CO$ phase, the static lattice distortions give rise to the optical interband gap, that broadens as the strength of the electron-phonon ($el-ph$) interaction increases. The lattice fluctuation effects induce a long subgap tail in the infrared conductivity and a wide band above the gap energy. The first term is due to the multi-phonon emission by the charge carriers, the second to the interband transitions accompanied by the multi-phonon scattering. The results show a good agreement with experimental spectra.

The phase diagram of the half-filled spinless Holstein model for electrons interacting with quantum phonons is derived in three dimensions extending at finite temperature $T$ a variational approach introduced for the one-dimensional T=0 case. Employing the variational scheme, the spectral and optical properties of the system are evaluated in the different regimes that characterize the normal and ordered state. The effects of the charge-ordering ($CO$) induce a transfer of spectral weight from low to high energies in the conductivity spectra, as the temperature decreases or the strength of the electron-phonon ($el-ph$) interaction increases. The inclusion of effects of lattice fluctuations is able to smooth the inverse square-root singularity expected for the case of the mean-field approach and determines a subgap tail absorption. Moreover, in the weak to intermediate coupling regime, a two-component structure is obtained within the $CO$ phase at low frequency: the remnant Drude-like term and the incipient absorption band centered around the gap energy.

In both cases the array unedrgoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless like phase transition. For the fully frustrated array, $f=1/2$, we find evidence of a {\em glassy behavior} although the system has {\em no disorder}. For comparison we study dynamics of the array at a different value of frustration ($f=1/3$) and find no trace of glassy dynamics.

Abstract:
Within a recently proposed variational approach it has been shown that, in $La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3$ perovskites with $0<x<0.5$, near the metal-insulator transition, the combined effect of the magnetic and electron-phonon interactions pushes the system toward a regime of two coexisting phases: a low electron density one made by itinerant large polarons forming ferromagnetic domains and a high electron…

Within a recently proposed variational approach it has been shown that, in $La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3$ perovskites with $0<x<0.5$, near the metal-insulator transition, the combined effect of the magnetic and electron-phonon interactions pushes the system toward a regime of two coexisting phases: a low electron density one made by itinerant large polarons forming ferromagnetic domains and a high electron density one made by localized small polarons giving rise to paramagnetic or antiferromagnetic domains depending on temperature. Employing the above-mentioned variational scheme, in this paper spectral and optical properties of manganites are derived for $x=0.3$ at different temperatures. It is found that the phase separation regime induces a robust pseudogap in the excitation spectrum of the system. Then the conductivity spectra are characterized by a transfer of spectral weight from high to low energies, as the temperature $T$ decreases. In the metallic ferromagnetic phase, at low $T$ two types of infrared absorption come out: a Drude term and a broad absorption band due respectively to the coherent and incoherent motion of large polarons. The obtained results turn out in good agreement with experiments.

The results for electron-phonon and electron-electron correlation functions show that a negative value of $t^{\prime}$ induces a strong anisotropy in the lattice distortions favoring the formation of nearest neighbor intersite bipolaron. The role of $t^{\prime}$, electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions is briefly discussed in view of the formation of charged striped domains.

Both critical temperatures decrease with increasing $x$. For $x > 1/\sqrt{2}$ the array undergoes a sequence of two transitions. On raising the temperature first the two sublattices decouple from each other and then, at higher temperatures, each sublattice becomes disorderd.

A new variational technique is developed to investigate the polaronic features of the Holstein Molecular Crystal Model. It is based on a linear superposition of Bloch states that describe large and small polaron wave functions. It is shown that this method provides a very good description of the regime characterized by intermediate values of the electron-phonon coupling constant (the so-called intermediate polaron) for any value of the adiabatic parameter $ω_0/t$. The polaron ground state energy in one and two dimensions is calculated and successfully compared with the best estimates available providing a clear physical interpretation of the intermediate polaron. The band structure, the spectral weight of the ground state and the lattice displacement associated to the polaron are also calculated and discussed. The new method has the advantage to require a very little computational effort.

We study the properties of the q-state frustrated bond percolation model by a Monte Carlo "bond flip" dynamics, using an algorithm originally devised by Sweeny and suitably modified to treat the presence of frustration. We analyze the percolation transition of the model, and find that it falls in the universality class of the q/2-state ferromagnetic Potts model. We then investigate the bond flip dynamics of the model, and find that for temperatures lower than the percolation transition Tp the relaxation functions show a two step decay, reminiscent of the relaxation of glass forming liquids. The long time decay (alpha-relaxation) is well fitted for T<Tp by a stretched exponential function, showing that in this model the relevant mechanism for the appearing of stretched exponentials is the percolation transition. At very low temperatures the relaxation functions develop a long plateau, as observed in glass forming liquids.

A general scheme for devising efficient cluster dynamics proposed in a previous letter [Phys.Rev.Lett. 72, 1541 (1994)] is extensively discussed. In particular the strong connection among equilibrium properties of clusters and dynamic properties as the correlation time for magnetization is emphasized. The general scheme is applied to a number of frustrated spin model and the results discussed.
