The Open Databases Integration for Materials Design (OPTIMADE) application programming interface (API) empowers users with holistic access to a growing federation of databases, enhancing the accessibility and discoverability of materials and chemical data. Since the first release of the OPTIMADE specification (v1.0), the API has undergone significant development, leading to the upcoming v1.2 release, and has underpinned multiple scientific studies. In this work, we highlight the latest features of the API format, accompanying software tools, and provide an update on the implementation of OPTIMADE in contributing materials databases. We end by providing several use cases that demonstrate the utility of the OPTIMADE API in materials research that continue to drive its ongoing development.

Stimulated by a recent report of a giant magnetocaloric effect in HoB$_2$ found via machine-learning predictions, we have explored the magnetocaloric properties of a related compound ErB$_2$, that has remained the last ferromagnetic material among the rare-earth diboride (REB$_2$) family with unreported magnetic entropy change |ΔSM|. The evaluated $|ΔS_M|$ at field change of 5 T in ErB$_2$ turned out to be as high as 26.1 (J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$) around the ferromagnetic transition (${T_C}$) of 14 K. In this series, HoB$_2$ is found to be the material with the largest $|ΔS_M|$ as the model predicted, while the predicted values showed a deviation with a systematic error compared to the experimental values. Through a coalition analysis using SHAP, we explore how this rare-earth dependence and the deviation in the prediction are deduced in the model. We further discuss how SHAP analysis can be useful in clarifying favorable combinations of constituent atoms through the machine-learned model with compositional descriptors. This analysis helps us to perform materials design with aid of machine learning of materials data.

The automatic extraction of materials and related properties from the scientific literature is gaining attention in data-driven materials science (Materials Informatics). In this paper, we discuss Grobid-superconductors, our solution for automatically extracting superconductor material names and respective properties from text. Built as a Grobid module, it combines machine learning and heuristic approaches in a multi-step architecture that supports input data as raw text or PDF documents. Using Grobid-superconductors, we built SuperCon2, a database of 40324 materials and properties records from 37700 papers. The material (or sample) information is represented by name, chemical formula, and material class, and is characterized by shape, do**, substitution variables for components, and substrate as adjoined information. The properties include the Tc superconducting critical temperature and, when available, applied pressure with the Tc measurement method.

We investigate the magnetic, thermal, and magnetocaloric properties of the intermetallic HoAl$_{3}$ compounds with two different crystal structures. The room-temperature equilibrium trigonal phase HoAl$_{3}$ undergoes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at the Neel temperature $T^{\rm tri}_{\rm N} =$ 9.8 K. The AFM ordering of the compound is strong against the magnetic field, so that inverse magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is found even under a magnetic field change of 0-50 kOe. The high-pressure cubic phase HoAl3, prepared by a rapid-solidification process, is antiferromagnetically ordered below $T^{\rm cub}_{\rm N} =$ 15 K. Magnetic and specific heat measurements reveal that this long-range AFM state becomes unstable as the temperature drops and then it is replaced by a magnetic glassy state below a spin freezing temperature $T_{\rm f} =$ 11 K. The successive changes in magnetic state result in complicated temperature and field dependence of the MCE at low temperatures.

For performing successful measurements within limited experimental time, efficient use of preliminary data plays a crucial role. This work shows that a simple feedforward type neural networks approach for learning preliminary experimental data can provide quick access to simulate the experiment within the learned range. The approach is especially beneficial for physical properties measurements with scanning on multiple axes, where derivative or integration of data are required to obtain the objective quantity. Due to its simplicity, the learning process is fast enough for the users to perform learning and simulation on-the-fly by using a combination of open-source optimization techniques and deep-learning libraries. Here such a tool for augmenting the experimental data is proposed, aiming to help researchers to decide the most suitable experimental conditions before performing costly experiments in real. Furthermore, this tool can also be used from the perspective of taking advantage of reutilizing and repurposing previously published data, accelerating data-driven exploration of functional materials.

We fabricate gas-atomized particles by inductively melting electrode rods of HoB2-x (x = -0.3, 0, 0.3, and 1.0) and investigate the effect of non-stoichiometry on the phase fraction, microstructure, and physical properties. Shifting the stoichiometric ratio of the electrode rod to the B (Ho)-rich side increases HoB4 (Ho) phase in the resulting atomized particles. Even if the atomized particles contain 15-20 weight percent (wt.%) of the impurity phase, the influence of which on the physical properties is less severe: the maximum value of the magnetic entropy change is only reduced by 10% compared to HoB2.0 particles. We further find that the ductile Ho phase exists so as to fill the space between the brittle HoB2 phases in the atomized particles, which may be beneficial to the mechanical properties of the particles. Our findings suggest that it would be better to use the Ho-rich electrode rods than the stoichiometric ones to produce HoB2-x particles with more suitable properties as a magnetic refrigerant for magnetic refrigeration systems.

The processing of promising magnetocaloric materials into spheres is one of the important issues on develo** high-performance magnetic refrigeration systems. In the present study, we achieved in producing spherical particles of a giant magnetocaloric compound HoB2 by a crucible-free gas atomization process, despite its high melting point of 2350 C. The particle size distribution ranges from 100 to 710 micrometers centered at 212-355 micrometers with the highest yield of 14-20wt% of total melted electrode, which is suitable for magnetic refrigeration systems. The majority of the resulting particles are mostly spherical with no contamination during the processing, while unique microstructures are observed on the surface and inside. These spherical particles exhibit sharp magnetic transitions and huge magnetic entropy change of 0.34 J cm^{-3} K^{-1} for a magnetic field change of 5 T at 15.5 K. The high sphericality and the high magnetocaloric performance suggest that the HoB2 gas-atomized particles have good potential as magnetic refrigerants for use in magnetic refrigerators for hydrogen liquefaction.

Analysis of XRD diffraction patterns is one of the keystones of materials science and materials research. With the advancement of data-driven methods for materials design, candidate materials can be quickly screened for the study of a desired physical property. Efficient methods to automatically analyze and identify phases present in a given pattern, are paramount for the success of this new paradigm. To aid this process, the open source python package Xray Estimation and Refinement Using Similarity (XERUS) for semi-automatic/automatic phase identification is presented. XERUS takes advantages of open crystal structure databases, not relying on proprietary databases, to obtain crystal structures on the fly, being then chemical space agnostic. By wrap** around GSASII, it can automatically simulate patterns and calculate similarity measures used for phase identification. Our approach is simple and quick but also applicable to multiphase identification, by coupling the similarity calculations with quick refinements followed by an iterative peak removal process. XERUS is shown in action in four different experimental datasets and also it is benchmarked against a recently proposed deep learning method for a mixture dataset covering the Li-Mn-O-F chemical space. XERUS will be freely available on https://www.github.com/pedrobcst/Xerus/

Extensively reported experimental observations indicate that on varying pressure ($p$) within the $\textit{T-p}$ phase diagram of most quantum critical heavy fermion (HF) superconductors, one identifies a cascade of distinct electronic states which may be magnetic, of Kondo-type, non-conventional superconducting, Fermi Liquid (FL), or non-FL character. Of particular interest to this work is the part of the phase diagram lying below a specific phase boundary, $T^{*}_\text{FL}(p^{*})$, across which the transport and thermodynamic properties switch over from non-FL into FL behavior. Remarkably, this nontrivial manifestation of FL phase is accompanied by (i) the characteristic $ρ_o + \textit{AT}^2$ dependence ($ρ_o$ = residual resistivity), (ii) a superconductivity below $T_{c} \leq T^{*}_\text{FL}(p^{*})$, and (iii) a universal scaling of $T_c$ and $A$: $ln\frac{T_{c}}θ\propto A^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ ($θ$ = characteristic energy scale). We consider that such features are driven by a fluctuation-mediated electron-electron scattering channel with the mediating quasiparticles being either spin fluctuations [Mathur et al., Nature 394,39 (1998)] or valence fluctuations [Miyake and Watanabe, Phil. Mag. 97, 3496 (2017)] depending on the character of the neighboring instability. On adopting such a scattering channel and applying standard theories of Migdal-Eliashberg (superconductivity) and Boltzmann (transport), we derive analytic expressions that satisfactorily reproduce the aforementioned empirical correlations in these heavy fermion superconductors.

Based on them, we computed the thermodynamic convex hull and pressure-dependent phase diagram of Mg$_x$Sc$_y$H$_z$ for $z/(x+y) < 4$. We have identified the stable crystal structures of four thermodynamically stable compounds with the higher hydrogen content, i.e., $R\bar{3}m$-MgScH$_{6}$, $C2/m$-Mg$_{2}$ScH$_{10}$, $Immm$-MgSc$_{2}$H$_{9}$ and $Pm\bar{3}m$-Mg(ScH$_{4}$)$_{3}$. Their superconducting transition temperatures were computationally predicted by the McMillan-Allen-Dynes formula combined with first-principles phonon calculations. They were found to exhibit superconductivity; among them, $R\bar{3}m$-MgScH$_{6}$ was predicted to have the highest $T_{c}$ (i.e. 23.34 K) at 200 GPa.

Motivated by recent discovery of yttrium-based high-temperature ternary superconducting hydrides (e.g., CaYH$_{12}$, LaYH$_{12}$, and ScYH$_{6}$), we have employed evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations to comprehensively examine the structural stability and superconductivity of the YMgH$_{x}$ system at high pressure. The hydrogen content $x$ and the pressure are both important factors in the stability of these candidate structures. We find that the stability of hydrogen-rich materials frequently necessitates higher pressure. For instance, the pressures to stabilize $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$ and $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$ are both more than 250 GPa. Hydrogen-less materials, such as $I4_{1}/amd$-YMgH$_{2}$ and $P6_{3}/mmc$-YMgH$_{3}$, can be stable at pressures as low as 100 GPa. In addition, we find a metastable structure for YMgH$_{6}$ with the same space group as the $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$. A metastable sodalite-like face-centered cubic (FCC) structure is also found in YMgH$_{12}$. These four clathrate structures of $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{6}$, $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$, $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$, and $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ is made up of H14, H18, H24, and H24 cages, respectively, in which the H-H pair exhibits weak covalent bonding. According to phonon calculations, $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{6}$ and $P4/mmm$-YMgH$_{8}$ require a pressure of 300 GPa to maintain dynamic stability, however $Cmmm$-YMgH$_{12}$ and $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ can maintain dynamic stability at pressures of 200 GPa and 250 GPa, respectively. Electron-phonon coupling calculations indicate that they might be potential high-temperature superconductors, with superconductivity intimately linked to the H cage structure. The sodalite structure $Fd\bar{3}m$-YMgH$_{12}$ has a $T_\mathrm{c}$ value of 190 K and a strong electron-phonon coupling constant of 2.18.

Our evaluation showed that the $Pm\bar{3}m$-LaYH$_{12}$ reported in the previous study was unstable during decomposition into $R\bar{3}c$-LaH$_{6}$ + $Im\bar{3}m$-YH$_{6}$. We also discovered new crystal structures, namely $Cmmm$-LaYH$_{12}$ ($y=1$), $R\bar{3}c$-LaYH$_{12}$ ($y=1$), $Cmmm$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$ ($y=3$), and $R\bar{3}$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$ ($y=3$), showing stability against such decomposition. While $R\bar{3}c$ ($y=1$) and $R\bar{3}$ ($y=3$) did not exhibit superconductivity owing to the extremely low density of states at the Fermi level, $Cmmm$ phases exhibited a $T_{c}$ of approximately 140~K at around 200~GPa owing to the extremely high electron--phonon coupling constant ($λ$ = 1.876 for LaYH$_{12}$). By the twice longer stacking for $Cmmm$-LaY$_3$H$_{24}$, the coupling constant increased owing to the chemical pressure of Y, leading to a slightly increased $T_{c}$.

The search for hydride compounds that exhibit high $T_c$ superconductivity has been extensively studied. Within the range of binary hydride compounds, the studies have been developed well including data-driven searches as a topic of interest. Toward the search for the ternary systems, the number of possible combinations grows rapidly, and hence the power of data-driven search gets more prominent. In this study, we constructed various regression models to predict $T_c$ for ternary hydride compounds and found the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) regression giving the best performance. The best performed regression predicts new promising candidates realizing higher $T_c$, for which we further identified their possible crystal structures. Confirming their lattice and thermodynamical stabilities, we finally predicted new ternary hydride superconductors, YKH$_{12}$ [$C2/m$ (No.12), $T_c$=143.2 K at 240 GPa] and LaKH$_{12}$ [$R\bar{3}m$ (No.166), $T_c$=99.2 K at 140 GPa] from first principles.

The addition of spherical S$^{7/2}$ Gd$^{3+}$ moments prompts an enhancement in Curie temperature, a reduction in peak value of the magnetic entropy change while still being relatively high, and a broadening of the magnetic entropy change curves. The overall influence is a relatively high refrigerant capacity and relative cooling power, and an extension of the thermal working range to higher temperatures; thus, electing Ho$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{2}$(as potential candidates for cryogenic refrigeration applications.

Over the past few years, different computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed to tackle skin lesion analysis. Most of these systems work only for dermoscopy images since there is a strong lack of public clinical images archive available to design them. To fill this gap, we release a skin lesion benchmark composed of clinical images collected from smartphone devices and a set of patient clinical data containing up to 22 features. The dataset consists of 1,373 patients, 1,641 skin lesions, and 2,298 images for six different diagnostics: three skin diseases and three skin cancers. In total, 58.4% of the skin lesions are biopsy-proven, including 100% of the skin cancers. By releasing this benchmark, we aim to aid future research and the development of new tools to assist clinicians to detect skin cancer.

Abstract:
Recently, a massive magnetocaloric effect near the liquefaction temperature of hydrogen has been reported in the ferromagnetic material HoB$_{2}$. Here we investigate the effects of Dy substitution in the magnetocaloric properties of Ho$_{1-x}$Dy$_{x}$B$_{2}$ alloys ($\textit{x}$ = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0). We find that the Curie temperature ($\textit{T}$$_{C}$) gradually increases upon Dy substitution, while the magnitude of the magnetic entropy change |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$| at $\textit{T}$ = $\textit{T}_{C}$ decreases from 0.35 to 0.15 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$ for a field change of 5 T. Due to the presence of two magnetic transitions in these alloys, despite the change in the peak magnitude of |$Δ\textit{S}_{M}$|, the refrigerant capacity ($\textit{RC}$) and refrigerant cooling power ($\textit{RCP}$) remains almost constant in all do** range, which as large as 5.5 J cm$^{-3}$ and 7.0 J cm$^{-3}$ for a field change of 5 T. These results imply that this series of alloys could be an exciting candidate for magnetic refrigeration in the temperature range between 10-50 K.

Magnetic refrigeration exploits the magnetocaloric effect which is the entropy change upon application and removal of magnetic fields in materials, providing an alternate path for refrigeration other than the conventional gas cycles. While intensive research has uncovered a vast number of magnetic materials which exhibits large magnetocaloric effect, these properties for a large number of compounds still remain unknown. To explore new functional materials in this unknown space, machine learning is used as a guide for selecting materials which could exhibit large magnetocaloric effect. By this approach, HoB$_{2}$ is singled out, synthesized and its magnetocaloric properties are evaluated, leading to the experimental discovery of gigantic magnetic entropy change 40.1 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ (0.35 J cm$^{-3}$ K$^{-1}$) for a field change of 5 T in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic second-order phase transition with a Curie temperature of 15 K. This is the highest value reported so far, to our knowledge, near the hydrogen liquefaction temperature thus it is a highly suitable material for hydrogen liquefaction and low temperature magnetic cooling applications.

We report the fabrication of ErAl2 magnetocaloric wires by a powder-in-tube method (PIT) and the evaluation of magnetic entropy change through magnetization measurements. The magnetic entropy change of ErAl2 PIT wires exhibits similar behavior to the bulk counterpart, while its magnitude is reduced by the decrease in the volume fraction of ErAl2 due to the surrounding non-magnetic sheaths. We find that another effect reduces the magnetic entropy change of the ErAl2 PIT wires around the Curie temperature, and discuss its possible origin in terms of a correlation between magnetic properties of ErAl2 and mechanical properties of sheath material.

The sample resistance under pressure was measured using an originally designed diamond anvil cell with boron-doped diamond electrodes. The pressure dependence of the resistance has been measured up to 32.6 GPa. The superconducting transition of SnSb2Te4 appeared at 2.1 K(Tconset) under 8.1 GPa, which was further increased with applied pressure to a maximum onset transition temperature 7.4K under 32.6 GPa.
