Abstract:
We show that $\Ext^2(\ell_2, \ell_2)\neq 0$ in the category of Banach spaces. This solves a sharpened version of Palamodov's problem and provides a solution to the second order version of Palais problem. We also show that $\Ext^2(\ell_1, \K)\neq 0$ in the category of quasi Banach spaces which solves the four-space problem for local convexity.

This is the third out of five chapters of the final report [1] of the Workshop on Physics at HL-LHC, and perspectives on HE-LHC [2]. It is devoted to the study of the potential, in the search for Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, of the High Luminosity (HL) phase of the LHC, defined as $3~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of $14~\mathrm{TeV}$, and of a possible future upgrade, the High Energy (HE) LHC, defined as $15~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$ of data at a centre-of-mass energy of $27~\mathrm{TeV}$. We consider a large variety of new physics models, both in a simplified model fashion and in a more model-dependent one. A long list of contributions from the theory and experimental (ATLAS, CMS, LHCb) communities have been collected and merged together to give a complete, wide, and consistent view of future prospects for BSM physics at the considered colliders. On top of the usual standard candles, such as supersymmetric simplified models and resonances, considered for the evaluation of future collider potentials, this report contains results on dark matter and dark sectors, long lived particles, leptoquarks, sterile neutrinos, axion-like particles, heavy scalars, vector-like quarks, and more. Particular attention is placed, especially in the study of the HL-LHC prospects, to the detector upgrades, the assessment of the future systematic uncertainties, and new experimental techniques. The general conclusion is that the HL-LHC, on top of allowing to extend the present LHC mass and coupling reach by $20-50\%$ on most new physics scenarios, will also be able to constrain, and potentially discover, new physics that is presently unconstrained. Moreover, compared to the HL-LHC, the reach in most observables will generally more than double at the HE-LHC, which may represent a good candidate future facility for a final test of TeV-scale new physics.

Translating to the language of $h$-vectors, there are finitely many simplicial complexes of bounded dimension with $h_1=k$ for any natural number $k$. In this paper we study the question at the other end of the $h$-vector: Are there only finitely many $(d-1)$-dimensional simplicial complexes with $h_d=k$ for any given $k$? The answer is no if we consider general complexes, but when focus on three cases coming from matroids: (i) independence complexes, (ii) broken circuit complexes, and (iii) order complexes of geometric lattices. We prove the answer is yes in cases (i) and (iii) and conjecture it is also true in case (ii).

In this work we analyze the spatial and time variation of the fine structure constant (α) upon the theoretical framework developed by Bekenstein [1]. We have computed the field ψrelated to αat first order of the weak field approximation and have also improved the estimation of the nuclear magnetic energy and, therefore, their contributions to the source term in the equation of motion of ψ. We obtained that the results are similar to the ones published in Ref. [2] which were computed using the zero order of the approximation, showing that one can neglect the first order contribution to the variation of the fine structure constant. By the comparison between our theoretical results and the observational data of the Eötvös-type experiments or the time variation of αover cosmological time-scale, we set constrains on the free parameter of the Bekenstein model, namely the Bekenstein length.

This overhead becomes larger for requests composed of several virtual machines to be started concurrently, and the illusion of flexibility and elasticity usually associated with the cloud computing model may vanish. This poses a problem for both the resource providers and the software developers, since tackling those overheads is not a trivial issue.
In this work we implement and evaluate several improvements for virtual machine image distribution problem in a cloud infrastructure and propose a method based on BitTorrent and local caching of the virtual machine images that reduces the transfer time when large requests are made

We present a method for drawing isolines indicating regions of equal joint exceedance probability for bivariate data. The method relies on bivariate regular variation, a dependence framework widely used for extremes. This framework enables drawing isolines corresponding to very low exceedance probabilities and these lines may lie beyond the range of the data. The method we utilize for characterizing dependence in the tail is largely nonparametric. Furthermore, we extend this method to the case of asymptotic independence and propose a procedure which smooths the transition from asymptotic independence in the interior to the first-order behavior on the axes. We propose a diagnostic plot for assessing isoline estimate and choice of smoothing, and a bootstrap procedure to visually assess uncertainty.

Generalized permutohedra are deformations of regular permutohedra, and arise in many different fields of mathematics. One important characterization of generalized permutohedra is the Submodular Theorem, which is related to the deformation cone of the Braid fan. We lay out general techniques for determining deformation cones of a fixed polytope and apply it to the Braid fan to obtain a natural combinatorial proof for the Submodular Theorem.
We also consider a refinement of the Braid fan, called the nested Braid fan, and construct usual (respectively, generalized) nested permutohedra which have the nested Braid fan as (respectively, refining) their normal fan. We extend many results on generalized permutohedra to this new family of polytopes, including a one-to-one correspondence between faces of nested permutohedra and chains in ordered partition posets, and a theorem analogous to the Submodular Theorem. Finally, we show that the nested Braid fan is the barycentric subdivision of the Braid fan, which gives another way to construct this new combinatorial object.

As another step towards understanding the long-term evolution of the magnetic field in neutron stars, we provide the first simulations of ambipolar diffusion in a spherical star. Restricting ourselves to axial symmetry, we consider a charged-particle fluid of protons and electrons carrying the magnetic flux through a motionless, uniform background of neutrons that exerts a collisional drag force on the former. We also ignore the possible impact of beta decays, proton superconductivity, and neutron superfluidity. All initial magnetic field configurations considered are found to evolve on the analytically expected time-scales towards "barotropic equilibria" satisfying the "Grad-Shafranov equation", in which the magnetic force is balanced by the degeneracy pressure gradient, so ambipolar diffusion is choked. These equilibria are so-called "twisted torus" configurations, which include poloidal and toroidal components, the latter restricted to the toroidal volumes in which the poloidal field lines close inside the star. In axial symmetry, they appear to be stable, although they are likely to undergo non-axially symmetric instabilities.

Abstract:
It is shown that, when there is a magnetic field present, in the framework of classical or quantum mechanics, the active translations differ from the passive ones and that the canonical momentum is not the generator of them. It is also shown that an infinitesimal generator of passive translations or rotations exists only if the magnetic field is invariant under these transformations.

We investigate complex structures on twisted Hilbert spaces, with special attention paid to the Kalton-Peck $Z_2$ space and to the hyperplane problem. We consider (nontrivial) twisted Hilbert spaces generated by centralizers obtained from an interpolation scale of Köthe function spaces. We show there are always complex structures on the Hilbert space that cannot be extended to the twisted Hilbert space. If, however, the scale is formed by rearrangement invariant Köthe function spaces then there are complex structures on it that can be extended to a complex structure of the twisted Hilbert space. Regarding the hyperplane problem we show that no complex structure on $\ell_2$ can be extended to a complex structure on an hyperplane of $Z_2$ containing it.

Generalizing a conjecture by De Loera et al., we conjecture that integral generalized permutohedra all have positive Ehrhart coefficients. Berline and Vergne construct a valuation that assigns values to faces of polytopes, which provides a way to write Ehrhart coefficients of a polytope as positive sums of these values. Based on available results, we pose a stronger conjecture: Berline-Vergne's valuation is always positive on permutohedra, which implies our first conjecture.
This article proves that our strong conjecture on Berline-Vergne's valuation is true for dimension up to 6, and is true if we restrict to faces of codimension up to 3. In addition to investigating the positivity conjectures, we study the Berline-Vergne's valuation, and show that it is the unique construction for McMullen's formula used to describe number of lattice points in permutohedra under certain symmetry constraints. We also give an equivalent statement to the strong conjecture in terms of mixed valuations.

We present new methods to obtain singular twisted sums $X\oplus_ΩX$ (i.e., exact sequences $0\to X\to X\oplus_ΩX \to X\to 0$ in which the quotient map is strictly singular), in which $X$ is the interpolation space arising from a complex interpolation scheme and $Ω$ is the induced centralizer.
Although our methods are quite general, in our applications we are mainly concerned with the choice of $X$ as either a Hilbert space, or Ferenczi's uniformly convex Hereditarily Indecomposable space. In the first case, we construct new singular twisted Hilbert spaces, including the only known example so far: the Kalton-Peck space $Z_2$. In the second case we obtain the first example of an H.I. twisted sum of an H.I. space. We then use Rochberg's description of iterated twisted sums to show that there is a sequence $\mathcal F_n$ of H.I. spaces so that $\mathcal F_{m+n}$ is a singular twisted sum of $\mathcal F_m$ and $\mathcal F_n$, while for $l>n$ the direct sum $\mathcal F_n \oplus \mathcal F_{l+m}$ is a nontrivial twisted sum of $\mathcal F_l$ and $\mathcal F_{m+n}$.
We also introduce and study the notion of disjoint singular twisted sum of Köthe function spaces and construct several examples involving reflexive $p$-convex Köthe function spaces, which include the function version of the Kalton-Peck space $Z_2$.

Furthermore, we claim through an example that flatness is not a sufficient condition to establish the absence of interactions in the underlying microscopic model of a thermodynamic system, which poses a limitation on the usefulness of Ruppeiner's metric and conjecture. Finally, we address the problem of the choice of coordinates in black hole thermodynamics. We propose an alternative energy representation for Kerr-Newman black holes that mimics fully Weinhold's approach. The corresponding Ruppeiner's metrics become degenerate only at absolute zero and have non-vanishing scalar curvatures.

The paper makes the first steps into the study of extensions ("twisted sums") of noncommutative $L^p$-spaces regarded as Banach modules over the underlying von Neumann algebra $\mathcal M$.
Our approach combines Kalton's description of extensions by centralizers (these are certain maps which are, in general, neither linear nor bounded) with a general principle, due to Rochberg and Weiss saying that whenever one finds a given Banach space $Y$ as an intermediate space in a (complex) interpolation scale, one automatically gets a self-extension $ 0\longrightarrow Y\longrightarrow X\longrightarrow Y \longrightarrow 0. $
For semifinite algebras, considering $L^p=L^p(\mathcal M,τ)$ as an interpolation space between $\mathcal M$ and its predual $\mathcal M_*$ one arrives at a certain self-extension of $L^p$ that is a kind of noncommutative Kalton-Peck space and carries a natural bimodule structure. Some interesting properties of these spaces are presented.
For general algebras, including those of type III, the interpolation mechanism produces two (rather than one) extensions of one sided modules, one of left-modules and the other of right-modules. Whether or not one can find (nontrivial) self-extensions of bimodules in all cases is left open.

A Banach space $E$ is said to be injective if for every Banach space $X$ and every subspace $Y$ of $X$ every operator $t:Y\to E$ has an extension $T:X\to E$. We say that $E$ is $\aleph$-injective (respectively, universally $\aleph$-injective) if the preceding condition holds for Banach spaces $X$ (respectively $Y$) with density less than a given uncountable cardinal $\aleph$. We perform a study of $\aleph$-injective and universally $\aleph$-injective Banach spaces which extends the basic case where $\aleph=\aleph_1$ is the first uncountable cardinal. When dealing with the corresponding "isometric" properties we arrive to our main examples: ultraproducts and spaces of type $C(K)$. We prove that ultraproducts built on countably incomplete $\aleph$-good ultrafilters are $(1,\aleph)$-injective as long as they are Lindenstrauss spaces. We characterize $(1,\aleph)$-injective $C(K)$ spaces as those in which the compact $K$ is an $F_\aleph$-space (disjoint open subsets which are the union of less than $\aleph$ many closed sets have disjoint closures) and we uncover some projectiveness properties of $F_\aleph$-spaces.

We study some structural properties of those sequences; in particular, we show that nontriviality, having strictly singular quotient map, or having strictly cosingular embedding depend only on the basic case $n=k=1$. If we focus on the case of Hilbert spaces obtained from the interpolation scale of $\ell_p$ spaces, then $\mathscr Z^{(2)}$ becomes the well-known Kalton-Peck $Z_2$ space; we then show that $\mathscr Z^{(n)}$ is (or embeds in, or is a quotient of) a twisted Hilbert space only if $n=1,2$, which solves a problem posed by David Yost; and that it does not contain $\ell_2$ complemented unless $n=1$. We construct another nontrivial twisted sum of $Z_2$ with itself that contains $\ell_2$ complemented.

The rate constants required to model the OH$^+$ observations in different regions of the interstellar medium have been determined using state of the art quantum methods.
First, state-to-state rate constants for the H$_2(v=0,J=0,1)$+ O$^+$($^4S$) $\rightarrow$ H + OH$^+(X ^3Σ^-, v', N)$ reaction have been obtained using a quantum wave packet method. The calculations have been compared with time-independent results to asses the accuracy of reaction probabilities at collision energies of about 1 meV. The good agreement between the simulations and the existing experimental cross sections in the $0.01-$1 eV energy range shows the quality of the results.
The calculated state-to-state rate constants have been fitted to an analytical form. Second, the Einstein coefficients of OH$^+$ have been obtained for all astronomically significant ro-vibrational bands involving the $X^3Σ^-$ and/or $A^3Π$ electronic states.
For this purpose the potential energy curves and electric dipole transition moments for seven electronic states of OH$^+$ are calculated with {\it ab initio} methods at the highest level and including spin-orbit terms, and the rovibrational levels have been calculated including the empirical spin-rotation and spin-spin terms. Third, the state-to-state rate constants for inelastic collisions between He and OH$^+(X ^3Σ^-)$ have been calculated using a time-independent close coupling method on a new potential energy surface. All these rates have been implemented in detailed chemical and radiative transfer models. Applications of these models to various astronomical sources show that inelastic collisions dominate the excitation of the rotational levels of OH$^+$. In the models considered the excitation resulting from the chemical formation of OH$^+$ increases the line fluxes by about 10 % or less depending on the density of the gas.
