2007 August 28. In this paper, we present the mid-infrared part (9um and 18um b ands) of the survey carried out with one of the on-board instruments, the Infrar ed Camera (IRC). Aims : We present unprecedented observational results of the 9 and 18um AKARI al l-sky survey and detail the operation and data processing leading to the point s ource detection and measurements. Methods : The raw data are processed to produce small images for every scan and point sources candidates, above the 5-sigma noise level per single scan, are der ived. The celestial coordinates and fluxes of the events are determined statisti cally and the reliability of their detections is secured through multiple detect ions of the same source within milli-seconds, hours, and months from each other. Results : The sky coverage is more than 90% for both bands. A total of 877,091 s ources (851,189 for 9um, 195,893 for 18um) are confirmed and included in the cur rent release of the point source catalogue. The detection limit for point source s is 50mJy and 90mJy for the 9um and 18um bands, respectively. The position accu racy is estimated to be better than 2". Uncertainties in the in-flight absolute flux calibration are estimated to be 3% for the 9um band and 4% for the 18um ban d. The coordinates and fluxes of detected sources in this survey are also compar ed with those of the IRAS survey and found to be statistically consistent.

By various methods, we obtained L$_{disk}$ $\sim$ 70 L$_{\odot}$ and $\dot{M}$ $\sim$1.1 $\times$ 10$^{-8}$ M$_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$. These values were about twice as high in the pre-1966-outburst epoch. This allowed the first direct estimate of the total mass accreted before outburst, M$_{accr}$=$\dot{M}_{pre-OB}$ $\cdot Δ$t, and its comparison with the critical ignition mass M$_{ign}$. We found M$_{accr}$ and M$_{ign}$ to be in perfect agreement (with a value close to 5 $\times$ 10$^{-7}$M$_{\odot}$) for M$_1$ $\sim$ 1.37 M$_{\odot}$, which provides a confirmation of the thermonuclear runaway theory. The comparison of the observed parameters of the eruption phase, with the corresponding values in the grid of models by Yaron and collaborators, provides satisfactory agreement for values of M$_1$ close to 1.35 M$_{\odot}$ and log$\dot{M}$ between -8.0 and -7.0, but the observed value of the decay time t$_3$ is higher than expected. The long duration of the optically thick phase during the recorded outbursts of T Pyx, a spectroscopic behavior typical of classical novae, and the persistence of P Cyg profiles, constrains the ejected mass M$_{ign}$ to within 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$. Therefore, T Pyx ejects far more material than it has accreted, and the mass of the white dwarf will not increase to the Chandrasekhar limit as generally believed in recurrent novae. A detailed study based on the UV data excludes the possibility that T Pyx belongs to the class of the supersoft X-ray sources, as has been postulated. XMM-NEWTON observations have revealed a weak, hard source and confirmed this interpretation.

We present a unified model of infrared (IR), optical, ultraviolet (UV), and X-ray light curves for the 1983 outburst of GQ Muscae (Nova Muscae 1983) and estimate its white dwarf (WD) mass. Based on an optically thick wind model of nova outbursts, we model the optical and IR light curves with free-free emission, and the UV 1455 Åand supersoft X-ray light curves with blackbody emission. The best fit model that reproduces simultaneously the IR, optical, UV 1455 Å, and supersoft X-ray observations is a 0.7 \pm 0.05 M_\sun WD for an assumed chemical composition of the envelope, X=0.35-0.55, X_{CNO} =0.2-0.35, and Z = 0.02, by mass weight. The mass lost by the wind is estimated to be ΔM_{wind} \sim 2 \times 10^{-5} M_\sun. We provide a new determination of the reddening, E(B-V) = 0.55 \pm 0.05, and of the distance, \sim 5 kpc. Finally, we discuss the strong UV flash that took place on JD 2,445,499 (151 days after the outburst).

World Space Observatory UltraViolet (WSO-UV) is a multipurpose space observatory, made by a 170 cm aperture telescope, capable of UV high-resolution spectroscopy, long slit low-resolution spectroscopy, and deep UV and optical imaging. With a nominal mission life time of 5 years, and a planned extension to 10 years, from a geosynchronous orbit with an inclination of 51.8 degrees, WSO-UV will provide observations of exceptional importance for the study of many unsolved astrophysical problems. WSO-UV is implemented in the framework of a collaboration between Russia (chair), China, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Ukraine. This book illustrates the results of the feasibility study for the Field Camera Unit (FCU), a multi-spectral radial instrument on the focal plane of WSO-UV. The book provides an overview of the key science topics that are drivers to the participation of the Italian astronomical community in the WSO-UV project. The science drivers here illustrated have been used to define the technical requirements for the conceptual and architectural design of the Field Camera Unit (FCU) focal plane instrument. In Chapter I we show that WSO-UV will give a significant contribution to solve the key astronomical problems individuated by the ASTRONET consortium, and which are driving the European Space Agency Cosmic Vision program. Chapter II elucidates the scientific requirements for WSO-UV FCU instrument, discussed in Chapter I, which are translated in a list of verifiable top level requirements usable to make the conceptual design of the FCU instrument. Chapter III is dedicated to the Field Camera Unit opto-mechanical design, its detectors and electronics subsystems. Finally, Chapter IV outlines the AIV and GSE plans and activities for the FCU instrument.

We have carried out a detailed analysis of the IUE archival high resolution spectra of the classical nova V1974 Cyg 1992. In addition to the P Cygni and emission lines, two shortward shifted absorption systems are present. Evidence is given that these absorptions originate in two separate expanding shells, outside the wind layers where the emission lines are formed. The outer main shell, containing most of the matter ejected at outburst, produces the so-called ``principal absorption line system'', and the inner faster moving second shell produces the so-called ``diffuse--enhanced absorption line system''. The outflow velocity of the two shells increases exponentially with time reaching a value of about 1750 km/s and 2900 km/s, respectively. We suggest that the acceleration of the shells is the result of increasing line-radiation pressure due to the UV-brightening of the star as the effective radius decreases. Around day 60 the second shell has overtaken the slower moving principal system shell, and merged with it. This explains: the sudden disappearance of the diffuse line system near that date, the upward jump of 240 km/s in velocity of the principal system and the first detection of hard X-ray emission on day 63. This velocity jump indicates that the main shell is about 4 times more massive than the second shell. The deceleration suffered by the diffuse-enhanced system after the shock provides a shock temperature of about 1.6 KeV, in fairly good agreement with the temperature of the observed hard X-ray emission.

We carry out an analysis of the Mg II 2796.34 A emission line in RS CVn stars and make a comparison with the normal stars studied in a previous paper (Paper I). The sample of RS CVn stars consists of 34 objects with known HIPPARCOS parallaxes and observed at high resolution with IUE. We confirm that RS CVn stars tend to possess wider Mg II lines than normal stars having the same absolute visual magnitude. However, we could not find any correlation between the logarithmic line width log Wo and the absolute visual magnitude Mv (the Wilson--Bappu relationship) for these active stars, contrary to the case of normal stars addressed in Paper I. On the contrary, we find that a strong correlation exists in the (Mv, log L) plane (L is the absolute flux in the line). In this plane, normal and RS CVn stars are distributed along two nearly parallel straight lines with RS CVn stars being systematically brighter by about 1 dex. Such a diagram provides an interesting tool to discriminate active from normal stars. We finally analyse the distribution of RS CVn and of normal stars in the (log L, log Wo) plane, and find a strong linear correlation for normal stars, which can be used for distance determinations.

No evidence has been found for a possible dependence of the WB effect on stellar metallicity and effective temperature.

This paper deals with the definition of the input fluxes used for the calibration of the IUE Final Archive. The method adopted consists on the determination of the shape of the detector's sensitivity curves using IUE low resolution observations with model fluxes of the DA white dwarf G191-B2B. A scale factor was then determined so that the IUE observations of some bright OAO-2 standards match the original measurements from Meade (1978) in the spectral region 2100-2300 A. The ultraviolet fluxes of six standard stars used as input for the Final Archive photometric calibration together with the model fluxes of G191-B2B normalized to the OAO-2 scale are given. A comparison with the independent FOS calibration shows that the IUE flux scale for the Ultraviolet is 7.2% lower. We consider this mainly to be caused by the different normalization procedures. It is shown that the present flux calibration applies to spectra processed with the INES low resolution extraction software.

In this paper we document the results of the study which led to the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms applied to the high resolution spectra processed with the NEWSIPS software for the Final Archive of the IUE Project. In this analysis, based on a very large number of spectra, we find that both K and the alpha parameters (not only the former as previously believed) vary with order number. This fact, together with the finding that the central peaks of the blaze function vary also as a function of the THDA temperature (for the SWP camera) and of the date of observations (for the LWP and LWR cameras), makes the ripple correction algorithm more complex than previously considered but, at the same time, considerably more reliable. As for the high resolution absolute calibration, the method followed is similar to the one implemented in IUESIPS. The internal accuracy of the high resolution calibration is about 4%. We note that the ripple correction and absolute calibration algorithms here described apply also to IUE data processed and distributed with the INES system.

This paper discusses the overall quality of IUE high resolution data processed with the NEWSIPS software in terms of flux and wavelength accuracy. It also describes the processing of NEWSIPS high resolution spectra within the framework of the ESA ``IUE Newly Extracted Spectra'' (INES) System. This system provides the IUE high resolution data in two formats: the high resolution ``concatenated'' spectra, in which the spectral orders are connected, eliminating the overlap regions through a procedure designed to optimize the signal-to-noise ratio at the edges of the orders, and the ``rebinned'' spectra, i.e. the high resolution concatenated spectra resampled into the low resolution wavelength domain. Our study reveals the existence of a significant discrepancy in the wavelength scales of short and long wavelength NEWSIPS high resolution spectra. The INES processing applies a correction of +17.7 km/s to the wavelength scale of the high resolution SWP spectra in order to provide an internally consistent velocity scale. Similarly, suitable corrections have been applied to long wavelength small aperture spectra. The new wavelength scale is, within the errors, in good agreement with the optical velocity scale.

The presence of narrow high-temperature emission lines from nitrogen-rich gas close to SN 1987A has been the principal observational constraint on the evolu- tionary status of the supernova's progenitor. A new analysis of the complete five-year set of low and high resolution IUE ultraviolet spectra of SN 1987A (1987.2--1992.3) provide fluxes for the N V 1240, N IV] 1486, He II 1640, OIII] 1665, NIII] 1751, and CIII] 1908 lines with significantly reduced random and systematic errors and reveals significant short-term fluctuations in the light curves. The N V, N IV] and N III] lines turn on sequentially over 15 to 20 days and show a progression from high to low ionization potential, implying an ioni- zation gradient in the emitting region. The line emission turns on suddenly at 83+/-4 days after the explosion, as defined by N IV]. The N III] line reaches peak luminosity at 399+/-15 days. A ring radius of (6.24+/-0.20)E{17} cm and inclination of 41.0+/-3.9 is derived from these times, assuming a circular ring. The probable role of resonant scattering in the N V light curve introduces systematic errors that leads us to exclude this line from the timing analysis. A new nebular analysis yields improved CNO abundance ratios N/C=6.1+/-1.1 and N/O=1.7+/-0.5, confirming the nitrogen enrichment found in our previous paper. From the late-time behavior of the light curves we find that the emission origi- nates from progressively lower density gas. We estimate the emitting mass near maximum (roughly 400 days) to be roughly 4.7E{-2} solar masses, assuming a filling factor of unity and an electron density of 2.6E4 cm^{-3}. These results are discussed in the context of current models for the emission and hydrodynamics of the ring.
