This paper studies an optimal control problem governed by a semilinear elliptic equation, in which the control acts in a multiplicative or bilinear way as the reaction coefficient of the equation. We focus on the numerical discretization of the problem. The discretization is carried out by using the finite element method, with piecewise constant functions for the control and continuous piecewise linear functions for the state and the adjoint state. We first prove convergence of the solutions of the discrete problems to solutions of the continuous problem. We also demonstrate that strict local solutions of the continuous problem can be approximated by local solutions of the discrete problems. Next we obtain an error estimate of order $O(h)$ for the difference between continuous and discrete locally optimal controls. To obtain this result we assume no-gap second order sufficient optimality conditions. As it is usual in this kind of discretization, a superconvergence phenomenon of order $O(h^2)$ is observed in numerical experiments for the error estimates of the state and adjoint state. The last part of the paper is dedicated to explain this behaviour. A numerical experiment confirming these results is included.

The linear differential operator of the equation is neither monotone nor coercive due to the presence of a convection term. The control appears only linearly, or even it can not appear in an explicit form in the objective functional. This work concentrates on a class of optimal control problems for semilinear parabolic equations subject to control constraint of the form $\|u(t)\|_{L^1(Ω)} \le γ$ for $t \in (0,T)$. This limits the total control that can be applied to the system at any instant of time. The $L^1$-norm of the constraint leads to sparsity of the control in space, for the time instants when the constraint is active. Due to the non-smoothness of the constraint, the analysis of the control problem requires new techniques. Existence of a solution, first and second order optimality conditions, and regularity of the optimal control are proved. Further, stability of the optimal controls with respect to $γ$ is investigated on the basis of different second order conditions.

The EarthFinder concept is based on a dramatic shift in our understanding of how PRV measurements should be made. We propose a new paradigm which brings the high precision, high cadence domain of transit photometry as demonstrated by Kepler and TESS to the challenges of PRV measurements at the cm/s level. This new paradigm takes advantage of: 1) broad wavelength coverage from the UV to NIR which is only possible from space to minimize the effects of stellar activity; 2) extremely compact, highly stable, highly efficient spectrometers (R>150,000) which require the diffraction-limited imaging possible only from space over a broad wavelength range; 3) the revolution in laser-based wavelength standards to ensure cm/s precision over many years; 4) a high cadence observing program which minimizes sampling-induced period aliases; 5) exploiting the absolute flux stability from space for continuum normalization for unprecedented line-by-line analysis not possible from the ground; and 6) focusing on the bright stars which will be the targets of future imaging missions so that EarthFinder can use a ~1.5 m telescope.

This work presents a Green's function approach, originally implemented in graphene with well-defined edges, to the surface of a strong 3D Topological Insulator (TI) with a sequence of proximitized superconducting (S) and ferromagnetic (F) surfaces. This consists of the derivation of the Green's functions for each region by the asymptotic solutions method, and their coupling by a tight-binding Hamiltonian with the Dyson equation to obtain the full Green's functions of the system. These functions allow the direct calculation of the momentum-resolved spectral density of states, the identification of subgap interface states, and the derivation of the differential conductance for a wide variety of configurations of the junctions. We illustrate the application of this method for some simple systems with two and three regions, finding the characteristic chiral state of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect (QAHE) at the NF interfaces, and chiral Majorana modes at the NS interfaces. Finally, we discuss some geometrical effects present in three-region junctions such as weak Fabry-Pérot resonances and Andreev bound states.

In this paper, we analyze optimal control problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. Box constraints for the controls are imposed and the cost functional involves the state and possibly a sparsity-promoting term, but not a Tikhonov regularization term. Unlike finite dimensional optimization or control problems involving Tikhonov regularization, second order sufficient optimality conditions for the control problems we deal with must be imposed in a cone larger than the one used to obtain necessary conditions. Different extensions of this cone have been proposed in the literature for different kinds of minima: strong or weak minimizers for optimal control problems. After a discussion on these extensions, we propose a new extended cone smaller than those considered until now. We prove that a second order condition based on this new cone is sufficient for a strong local minimum.

PDS 110 is a young disk-hosting star in the Orion OB1A association. Two dimming events of similar depth and duration were seen in 2008 (WASP) and 2011 (KELT), consistent with an object in a closed periodic orbit. In this paper we present data from a ground-based observing campaign designed to measure the star both photometrically and spectroscopically during the time of predicted eclipse in September 2017. Despite high-quality photometry, the predicted eclipse did not occur, although coherent structure is present suggesting variable amounts of stellar flux or dust obscuration. We also searched for RV oscillations caused by any hypothetical companion and can rule out close binaries to 0.1 $M_\odot$. A search of Sonneberg plate archive data also enabled us to extend the photometric baseline of this star back more than 50 years, and similarly does not re-detect any deep eclipses. Taken together, they suggest that the eclipses seen in WASP and KELT photometry were due to aperiodic events. It would seem that PDS 110 undergoes stochastic dimmings that are shallower and shorter-duration than those of UX Ori variables, but may have a similar mechanism.

We show that this phase can be induced on a thin film of a topological insulator like Bi$_2$Se$_3$ in proximity to a single s-wave superconductor. In our analysis we take into account the parity degree of freedom of the electronic states which is not included in effective Dirac-like surface theories. We find that the topological phase can be reached when the induced interparity pairing dominates over the intraparity one. Application of an electric field perpendicular to the film extends the range of parameters where the topological phase occurs.

The two-dimensional nature of graphene makes it an ideal platform to explore proximity-induced unconventional planar superconductivity and the possibility of topological superconductivity. Using Green's functions techniques, we study the transport properties of a finite size ballistic graphene layer placed between a normal state electrode and a graphene lead with proximity-induced unconventional superconductivity. Our microscopic description of such a junction allows us to consider the effect of edge states in the graphene layer and the imperfect coupling to the electrodes. The tunnel conductance through the junction and the spectral density of states feature a rich interplay between graphene's edge states, interface bound states formed at the graphene-superconductor junction, Fabry-Pérot resonances originated from the finite size of the graphene layer, and the characteristic Andreev surface states of unconventional superconductors. Within our analytical formalism, we identify the separate contribution from each of these subgap states to the conductance and density of states. Our results show that graphene provides an advisable tool to determine experimentally the pairing symmetry of proximity-induced unconventional superconductivity.
