X-ray imaging with GEMs using $100\,μ$m thick foils
Abstract: A simple X-ray imaging system using off-the-shelf electronics and simple reconstruction algorithms aiming a spatial resolution of 1.7 mm ($\sim 3\,\%$ of the detector length) is described in this work. For this, two 100 cm$^2$ Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils with a thickness of 100 μm (2-fold thicker than the standard ones) were immersed in a mixture of argon and carbon dioxide (70:30). The ch… ▽ More

Structure of trajectories of complex matrix eigenvalues in the Hermitian-non-Hermitian transition
Abstract: The statistical properties of trajectories of eigenvalues of Gaussian complex matrices whose Hermitian condition is progressively broken are investigated. It is shown how the ordering on the real axis of the real eigenvalues is reflected in the structure of the trajectories and also in the final distribution of the eigenvalues in the complex plane.

Deformed Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble description of Small-World networks
Abstract: The study of spectral behavior of networks has gained enthusiasm over the last few years. In particular, Random Matrix Theory (RMT) concepts have proven to be useful. In discussing transition from regular behavior to fully chaotic behavior it has been found that an extrapolation formula of the Brody type can be used. In the present paper we analyze the regular to chaotic behavior of Small World… ▽ More

Deformations of the Tracy-Widom distribution
Abstract: In random matrix theory (RMT), the Tracy-Widom (TW) distribution describes the behavior of the largest eigenvalue. We consider here two models in which TW undergoes transformations. In the first one disorder is introduced in the Gaussian ensembles by superimposing an external source of randomness. A competition between TW and a normal (Gaussian) distribution results, depending on the spreading o… ▽ More

Quantum reflection: The invisible quantum barrier
Abstract: We construct the invisible quantum barrier which represents the phenomenon of quantum reflection using the available data. We use the Abel equation to invert the data. The resulting invisible quantum barrier is double-valued in both axes. We study this invisible barrier in the case of atom and Bose-Einstein Condensate reflection from a solid silicon surface. A time-dependent, one-spatial dimensi… ▽ More

Optimal network topologies for information transmission in active networks
Abstract: This work clarifies the relation between network circuit (topology) and behavior (information transmission and synchronization) in active networks, e.g. neural networks. As an application, we show how to determine a network topology that is optimal for information transmission. By optimal, we mean that the network is able to transmit a large amount of information, it possesses a large number of… ▽ More

Symmetry Breaking Study with Random Matrix Ensembles
Abstract: A random matrix model to describe the coupling of $m$-fold symmetry is constructed. The particular threefold case is used to analyze data on eigenfrequencies of elastomechanical vibration of an anisotropic quartz block. It is suggested that such experimental/theoretical study may supply a powerful means to discern intrinsic symmetry of physical systems.

Disordered ensembles of random matrices
Abstract: It is shown that the families of generalized matrix ensembles recently considered which give rise to an orthogonal invariant stable Lévy ensemble can be generated by the simple procedure of dividing Gaussian matrices by a random variable. The nonergodicity of this kind of disordered ensembles is investigated. It is shown that the same procedure applied to random graphs gives rise to a family tha… ▽ More

Perturbative Treatment of Symmetry Breaking Within Random Matrix Theory
Abstract: We discuss the applicability, within the Random Matrix Theory, of perturbative treatment of symmetry breaking to the experimental data on the flip symmetry breaking in quartz crystal. We found that the values of the parameter that measures this breaking are different for the spacing distribution as compared to those for the spectral rigidity. We consider both twofold and threefold symmetries. Th… ▽ More

Level density for deformations of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble
Abstract: Formulas are derived for the average level density of deformed, or transition, Gaussian orthogonal random matrix ensembles. After some general considerations about Gaussian ensembles we derive formulas for the average level density for (i) the transition from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) to the Poisson ensemble and (ii) the transition from the GOE to $m$ GOEs.

Phase diagram of a random-anisotropy mixed-spin Ising model
Abstract: We investigate the phase diagram of a mixed spin-1/2--spin-1 Ising system in the presence of quenched disordered anisotropy. We carry out a mean-field and a standard self-consistent Bethe--Peierls calculation. Depending on the amount of disorder, there appear novel transition lines and multicritical points. Also, we report some connections with a percolation problem and an exact result in one di… ▽ More

Self-Organized Criticality in the Olami-Feder-Christensen model
Abstract: A system is in a self-organized critical state if the distribution of some measured events (avalanche sizes, for instance) obeys a power law for as many decades as it is possible to calculate or measure. The finite-size scaling of this distribution function with the lattice size is usually enough to assume that any cut off will disappear as the lattice size goes to infinity. This approach, howev… ▽ More
