Topological defects
Abstract: This is a survey article for the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics, 2nd Edition. Topological defects are described in the context of the 2-dimensional Ising model on the lattice, in 2-dimensional quantum field theory, in topological quantum field theory in arbitrary dimension, and in higher-dimensional quantum field theory with a focus on 4-dimensional quantum electrodynamics.

Orbifolds of topological quantum field theories
Abstract: The orbifold construction via topological defects in quantum field theory can either be understood as a state sum construction internal to a given ambient theory, or as the procedure of (identifying and) gauging ordinary and "non-invertible" symmetries. Here we explain how this is rigorously understood in the case of topological QFTs. We provide various examples and outline general features, also… ▽ More

Orbifold completion of 3-categories
Abstract: We develop a general theory of 3-dimensional ``orbifold completion'', to describe (generalised) orbifolds of topological quantum field theories as well as all their defects. Given a semistrict 3-category $\mathcal{T}$ with adjoints for all 1- and 2-morphisms (more precisely, a Gray category with duals), we construct the 3-category $\mathcal{T}_{\textrm{orb}}$ as a Morita category of certain $E_1$-… ▽ More

Truncated affine Rozansky--Witten models as extended defect TQFTs
Abstract: We apply the cobordism hypothesis with singularities to the case of affine Rozansky--Witten models, providing a construction of extended TQFTs that includes all line and surface defects. On a technical level, this amounts to proving that the associated homotopy 2-category is pivotal, and to systematically employing its 3-dimensional graphical calculus. This in particular allows us to explicitly ca… ▽ More

Invariants of r-spin TQFTs and non-semisimplicity
Abstract: For a positive integer r, an r-spin topological quantum field theory is a 2-dimensional TQFT with tangential structure given by the r-fold cover of SO_2 . In particular, such a TQFT assigns a scalar invariant to every closed r-spin surface Sigma. Given a sequence of scalars indexed by the set of diffeomorphism classes of all such Sigma, we construct a symmetric monoidal category C and a C-valued r… ▽ More

Looking for structure in the cobordism conjecture
Abstract: The cobordism conjecture of the swampland program states that the bordism group of quantum gravity must be trivial. Truncated affine Rozansky--Witten models as extended TQFTs
Abstract: We construct extended TQFTs associated to Rozansky--Witten models with target manifolds $T^*\mathbb{C}^n$. The starting point of the construction is the 3-category whose objects are such Rozansky--Witten models, and whose morphisms are defects of all codimensions. Homologically smooth dg algebras also form a 2-category to which the construction of `equivariant completion' can be applied. In this theory two objects are called `orbifold equiva… ▽ More
