Determination of the species generated in atmospheric-pressure laser-induced plasmas by mass spectrometry techniques
Abstract: We present temporal information obtained by mass spectrometry techniques about the evolution of plasmas generated by laser filamentation in air. The experimental setup used in this work allowed us to study not only the dynamics of the filament core but also of the energy reservoir that surrounds it. Furthermore, valuable insights about the chemistry of such systems like the photofragmentation and/… ▽ More

A novel technique to achieve atomic macro-coherence as a tool to determine the nature of neutrinos
Abstract: The photon spectrum in macrocoherent atomic de-excitation via radiative emission of neutrino pairs (RENP) has been proposed as a sensitive probe of the neutrino mass spectrum, capable of competing with conventional neutrino experiments. In this paper we revisit this intriguing possibility, presenting an alternative method for inducing large coherence in a target based on adiabatic techniques. More… ▽ More

In-trap fluorescence detection of atoms in a microscopic dipole trap
Abstract: We investigate fluorescence detection using a standing wave of blue-detuned light of one or more atoms held in a deep, microscopic dipole trap. The blue-detuned standing wave realizes a Sisyphus laser cooling mechanism so that an atom can scatter many photons while remaining trapped. When imaging more than one atom, the blue detuning limits loss due to inelastic light-assisted collisions. Using th… ▽ More

Dynamics of two atoms undergoing light-assisted collisions in an optical microtrap
Abstract: We study the dynamics of atoms in optical traps when exposed to laser cooling light that induces light-assisted collisions. We experimentally prepare individual atom pairs and observe their evolution. Due to the simplicity of the system (just two atoms in a microtrap) we can directly simulate the pair's dynamics, thereby revealing detailed insight into it. We find that often only one of the collis… ▽ More

High efficiency preparation of single trapped atoms using blue detuned light assisted collisions
Abstract: We report on a procedure by which we obtain a 91% loading efficiency of single 85Rb atoms in an optical microtrap. This can be achieved within a total preparation time of 542 ms. We employ blue detuned light assisted collisions to realize a process in which only one of the collision partners is lost. We explain the mechanism for efficiently loading a single atom and discuss the factors that limit… ▽ More

Coherent atomic soliton molecules for matter-wave switching
Abstract: We discuss the dynamics of interacting dark-bright two-dimensional vector solitons in multicomponent immiscible bulk Bose-Einstein condensates. We describe matter-wave molecules without a scalar counterpart that can be seen as bound states of vector objects. We also analyze the possibility of using these structures as building blocks for the design of matter-wave switchers.

Filamentation processes and dynamical excitation of light condensates in optical media with competing nonlinearities
Abstract: We analyze both theoretically and by means of numerical simulations the phenomena of filamentation and dynamical formation of self-guided nonlinear waves in media featuring competing cubic and quintic nonlinearities. We provide a theoretical description of recent experiments in terms of a linear stability analysis supported with simulations, showing the possibility of experimental observation of… ▽ More

Continuous atom laser with Bose-Einstein condensates involving three-body interactions
Abstract: We demonstrate, through numerical simulations, the emission of a coherent continuous matter wave of constant amplitude from a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a shallow optical dipole trap. The process is achieved by spatial control of the variations of the scattering length along the trap** axis, including elastic three body interactions due to dipole interactions. In our approach, the outcoupling… ▽ More

Laser tweezers for atomic solitons
Abstract: We describe a controllable and precise laser tweezers for Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atomic gases. In our configuration, a laser beam is used to locally modify the sign of the scattering length in the vicinity of a trapped BEC. The induced attractive interactions between atoms allow to extract and transport a controllable number of atoms. We analyze, through numerical simulations, th… ▽ More

A ring accelerator for matter-wave solitons
Abstract: We describe a new technique to accelerate and control a confined cloud of ultracold neutral atoms. In our configuration, a Bose-Einstein Condensate trapped in a ring is accelerated by using an amplitude-modulated optical potential. The spreading of the atomic cloud is avoided by an adequate tuning of the scattering length. We also discuss other variations that offer new possibilities of robust c… ▽ More

Analysis of an atom laser based on the spatial control of the scattering length
Abstract: In this paper we analyze atom lasers based on the spatial modulation of the scattering length of a Bose-Einstein Condensate. We demonstrate, through numerical simulations and approximate analytical methods, the controllable emission of matter-wave bursts and study the dependence of the process on the spatial dependence of the scattering length along the axis of emission. We also study the role o… ▽ More
