Here, we present a study of the influence of microstructure on the magnetic properties of polycrystalline samples of the La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 double perovskite, with primary attention to the spontaneous exchange bias effect, a fascinating recently discovered phenomena for which some materials exhibit unidirectional magnetic anisotropy after being cooled in zero magnetic fields. By sintering La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 at different temperatures, we obtained samples with distinct average grain sizes, ranging from 1.54 to 6.65 mu_m. A detailed investigation of the material's structural, morphologic, electronic, and magnetic properties using X-ray powder diffraction, powder neutron diffraction, X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and AC and DC magnetometry has revealed a systematic enhancement of the exchange bias effect with increasing the average grain size. This evolution is discussed in terms of changes in the material's porosity and grain morphology and its influence on the exchange couplings at the magnetic interfaces.

Magnetic properties of A2BB'O6 (A = rare or alkaline earth ions; B,B' = transition metal ions) double perovskites are of great interest due to their potential spintronic applications. Particularly fascinating is the zero field cooled exchange bias (ZEB) effect observed for the hole doped La2-xAxCoMnO6 polycrystalline samples. In this work we synthesize La2CoMnO6, La1.5Ca0.5CoMnO6, and La1.5Sr0.5CoMnO6 single crystals by the floating zone method and study their magnetic behavior. The three materials are ferromagnetic. Surprisingly, we observe no zero or even conventional exchange bias effect for the Ca and Sr doped single crystals, in sharp contrast to polycrystalline samples. This absence indicates that the lack of grain boundaries and spin glass-like behavior, not observed in our samples, might be key ingredients for the spontaneous exchange bias phenomena seen in polycrystalline samples.

We investigate the thermal-driven charge density wave (CDW) transition of two cubic superconducting intermetallic systems Lu(Pt1-xPdx)2In and (Sr1-xCax)3Ir4Sn13 by means of x-ray diffraction technique. A detailed analysis of the CDW modulation superlattice peaks as function of temperature is performed for both systems as the CDW transition temperature T_CDW is suppressed to zero by an non-thermal control parameter. Our results indicate an interesting crossover of the classical thermal-driven CDW order parameter critical exponent from a three-dimensional universality class to a mean-field tendency, as T_CDW vanishes. Such behavior might be associated with presence of quantum fluctuations which influences the classical second-order phase transition, strongly suggesting the presence of a quantum critical point (QCP) at T_CDW = 0. This also provides experimental evidence that the effective dimensionality exceeds its upper critical dimension due to a quantum phase transition.

We explore the evolution of the structural phase transition of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$, a model system to study the interplay between structural quantum criticality and superconductivity, by means of high-energy x-ray diffraction measurements at high pressures and low temperatures. Our results confirm a rapid suppression of the superlattice transition temperature $T^*$ against pressure, which extrapolates to zero at a critical pressure of $\approx 1.79(4)$ GPa. The temperature evolution of the superlattice Bragg peak in $\rm{Ca_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ reveals a drastic decrease of the intensity and an increase of the linewidth when $T \rightarrow 0$ K and $p \rightarrow p_c$. Such anomaly is likely associated to the emergence of quantum fluctuations that disrupt the formation of long-range superlattice modulation. The revisited temperature-pressure phase diagram of $\rm{(Sr, Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}}$ thus highlights the intertwined nature of the distinct order parameters present in this system and demonstrates some similarities between this family and the unconventional superconductors.

La3Co4Sn13 is a superconducting material with transition temperature at Tc = 2.70 K, which presents a superlattice structural transition at T* ~ 150 K, a common feature for this class of compounds. However, for this material, it is not clear that at T* the lattice distortions arise from a charge density wave (CDW) or from a distinct microscopic origin. Interestingly, it has been suggested in isostructural non-magnetic intermetallic compounds that T* can be suppressed to zero temperature, by combining chemical and external pressure, and a quantum critical point is argued to be observed near these critical do**/pressure. Our study shows that application of pressure on single-crystalline La3Co4Sn13 enhances Tc and decreases T*. We observe thermal hysteresis loops for cooling/heating cycles around T* for P > 0.6 GPa, in electrical resistivity measurements, which are not seen in x-ray diffraction data. The hysteresis in electrical measurements may be due to the pinning of the CDW phase to impurities/defects, while the superlattice structural transition maintains its ambient pressure second-order transition nature under pressure. From our experiments we estimate that T* vanishes at around 5.5 GPa, though no quantum critical behavior is observed up to 2.53 GPa.
