In this paper, we investigate the gravitational effects of a global monopole that couples nonminimally to gravity. Considering a coupling parameter of arbitrary strength, we have obtained an analytical solution for the field equations of the model in the asymptotic region outside the monopole's core, thus generalizing previous results. Within the weak coupling regime, we have also analyzed how this matter-geometry interplay affects some physical properties of the monopole, such as its radius and the mass enclosed in its core, which are explicitly computed and expressed in terms of the parameter of the theory. Using the Hahari-Loustó toy model, we have also found that the modification of general relativity (GR) may render a positive sign to the monopole mass, which means a global monopole able to exert attractive gravitational force on matter particles surrounding it. Next, we have studied some properties of a hairy black hole carrying such a global monopole charge. In this vein, we verified that the deviation from GR may provide such a spacetime with both event and Cauchy horizons, thus emulating a Reissner-Nordström framework. Finally, we have performed a study of the geodesic motion of timelike particles around this black hole by setting the conditions for stable circular orbits. We also examined the gravitational bending experienced by photons traveling through this geometry, taking into account finite-distance corrections on the deflection angle. Additionally, we make an order-of-magnitude estimate for this extra contribution considering the light bending caused by Sagittarius A*.

Apart from the familiar structure firmly-rooted in the general relativistic field equations where the energy--momentum tensor has a null divergence i.e., it conserves, there exists a considerable number of extended theories of gravity allowing departures from the usual conservative framework. Many of these theories became popular in the last few years, aiming to describe the phenomenology behind dark matter and dark energy. However, within these scenarios, it is common to see attempts to preserve the conservative property of the energy--momentum tensor. Most of the time, it is done by means of some additional constraint that ensures the validity of the standard conservation law, as long as this option is available in the theory. However, if no such extra constraint is available, the theory will inevitably carry a non-trivial conservation law as part of its structure. In this work, we review some of such proposals discussing the theoretical construction leading to the non-conservation of the energy--momentum tensor.

We investigate a braneworld model generated by a global monopole in the context of Brans-Dicke gravity. After solving the dynamical equations we found a model capable to alleviate the so-called hierarchy problem. The obtained framework is described by a hybrid compactification scheme endowed with a seven-dimensional spacetime, in which the brane has four non-compact dimensions and two curled extra dimensions. The relevant aspects of the resulting model are studied and the requirements to avoid the well known seesaw-like behavior are discussed. We show that under certain conditions it is possible to circumvent such a pathological behavior that characterizes most of the models that exhibit hybrid compactification. Lastly, we deepen our analysis by considering possible extensions of this model to a setup with multiple branes and orbifold-like extra dimension. For this, we compute the consistency conditions to be obeyed by this more general configuration as predicted by the braneworld sum rules formalism. This study indicates the possibility of exclusively positive brane tensions in the model.

This white paper summarizes the activities of the Brazilian community concerning dark matter physics and highlights the importance of financial support to Brazilian groups that are deeply involved in experimental endeavours. The flagships of the Brazilian dark matter program are the Cherenkov Telescope Array, DARKSIDE, SBN and LHC experiments, but we emphasize that smaller experiments such as DAMIC and CONNIE constitute important probes to dark sectors as well and should receive special attention. Small experimental projects showing the potential to probe new regions of parameter space of dark matter models are encouraged. On the theoretical and phenomenological side, some groups are devoted to astrophysical aspects such as the dark matter density profile while others explore the signature of dark matter models at colliders, direct and indirect detection experiments. In summary, the Brazilian dark matter community that was born not long ago has grown tremendously in the past years and now plays an important role in the hunt for a dark matter particle.

We develop a cosmological model based on action-dependent Lagrangian theories. The main feature here is the nonconservation of the energy momentum tensor due to the nontrivial geometrical construction of the theory. We provide the basic set of equations necessary to study both the cosmological background expansion as well as the linear matter perturbation growth. We show that the simplest realization of the Universe as described by only one component is not viable as expected from the existing correspondence between this model and the case of viscous cosmological fluids. However, modeling the energy content of the Universe as composed by two pressureless fluids, i.e., one a typical cold dark matter fluid and the other a pressureless dark energy fluid which is responsible for driving the late-time acceleration expansion, is qualitatively compatible with observational data.

We investigate some consequences of a specific non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor on the physics of certain cosmic string configurations. This non-conservation is induced by a new gravitational theory recently introduced as an attempt to incorporate dissipative systems in the gravity description. This model of gravity is endowed with a variational principle, where an action-dependence on the geometric sector is assumed. For the Abelian-Higgs string we derive the dynamical equations and provide the numerical solutions describing the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields as well as the profile of the metric functions for different cases of the parameter that characterises the model. Additionally, from this numerical approach we find how the inner structure of the cosmic string is affected by this underlying gravitational theory, by analyzing the deviations both on the mass per unit length and the deficit angle of the string. Next, we proceed with an analytical treatment obtaining the solution close to the string axis and also the corresponding vacuum solution. Our analytical results are also complemented with the study of a thick cosmic string model, where the defect is endowed with finite core. In this case we have obtained the proper interior solution which joined together with the vacuum metric outside provides an exact solution for the exterior geometry which generalizes previous results and leads to a decreasing of the mass per unit length of the cosmic string.

The novel feature where comparing with previous implementations of dissipative effects in gravity is the possible arising of such phenomena from a least action principle, so they are of a purely geometric nature. We derive the dynamical equations describing the behaviour of the cosmic background, considering a single fluid model composed by pressureles matter, whereas the dark energy is conceived as an outcome of the "geometric" dissipative process emerging in the model. Besides, adopting the synchronous gauge we obtain the first-order perturbative equations which shall describe the evolution of the matter perturbations within the linear regime.

In this paper the $f(R)$ global monopole is reexamined. We provide an exact solution for the modified field equations in the presence of a global monopole for regions outside its core, generalizing previous results. Additionally, we discuss some particular cases obtained from this solution. We consider a setup consisting of a possible Schwarzschild black hole that absorbs the topological defect, giving rise to a static black hole endowed with a monopole's charge. Besides, we demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs field far from the monopole's core is shaped by a class of spacetime metrics which includes those ones analyzed here. In order to assess the gravitational properties of this system, we analyse the geodesic motion of both massive and massless test particles moving in the vicinity of such configuration. For the material particles we set the requirements they have to obey in order to experience stable orbits. On the other hand, for the photons we investigate how their trajectories are affected by the gravitational field of this black hole.

Our results challenge the viability of $f(R,T)$ as an alternative modification of gravity.

Wei et al [PRD 88, 043510 (2013)] have proposed the existence of a cosmological degeneracy between warm dark matter (WDM), modified gravity and coupled cold dark matter (CDM) cosmologies at both the background expansion and the growth of density perturbation levels, i.e., corresponding cosmological data would not be able to differentiate such scenarios. Here, we will focus on the specific indistinguishability between a warm dark matter plus cosmological constant ($Λ$) and coupled scalar field-CDM scenarios. Although the statement of Wei et al is true for very specific conditions we present a more complete discussion on this issue and show in more detail that these models are indeed distinguishable. We show that the degeneracy breaks down since coupled models leave a specific signature in the redshift space distortion data which is absent in the uncoupled warm dark matter cosmologies. Furthermore, we complement our claim by providing the reasons which suggest that even at nonlinear level a breaking of such apparent equivalence is also expected.

By including a physical mechanism to the dark matter description like viscosity we construct a more realistic model for the universe. Also, the known small scale pathologies of the standard CDM model either disappear or become less severe. We study clustering properties of a $Λ$CDM-like model in which dark matter is described as a bulk viscous fluid. The linear power spectrum, the nonlinear spherical "top hat" collapse and the mass functions are presented. We use the analysis with such structure formation tools in order to place an upper bound on the magnitude of the dark matter's viscosity.

Since we are dealing with a spherically symmetric problem, $F(R)$ is expressed as a radial function ${\cal F}(r)\equiv{F(R(r))}$. So, the choice of a specific form for $f(R)$ will be equivalent to adopt an Ansatz for ${\cal F}(r)$. By choosing an explicit functional form for ${\cal F}(r)$ we obtain the weak field solutions for the metric tensor, compute the time-like geodesics and analyse the motion of a massive test particle. An interesting feature is an emerging attractive force exerted by the monopole on the particle.
