Our work also extends beyond the compact setting, and includes as special cases much of the previous results by other authors in the Euclidean, Riemannian and Carnot group settings. Unlike other recent contributions in the metric measure spaces context, our work does not rely on the assumption that $(Z,d,ν)$ supports a Poincaré inequality.

We present a new algorithm for learning unknown governing equations from trajectory data, using and ensemble of neural networks. Given samples of solutions $x(t)$ to an unknown dynamical system $\dot{x}(t)=f(t,x(t))$, we approximate the function $f$ using an ensemble of neural networks. We express the equation in integral form and use Euler method to predict the solution at every successive time step using at each iteration a different neural network as a prior for $f$. This procedure yields M-1 time-independent networks, where M is the number of time steps at which $x(t)$ is observed. Finally, we obtain a single function $f(t,x(t))$ by neural network interpolation. Unlike our earlier work, where we numerically computed the derivatives of data, and used them as target in a Lipschitz regularized neural network to approximate $f$, our new method avoids numerical differentiations, which are unstable in presence of noise. We test the new algorithm on multiple examples both with and without noise in the data. We empirically show that generalization and recovery of the governing equation improve by adding a Lipschitz regularization term in our loss function and that this method improves our previous one especially in presence of noise, when numerical differentiation provides low quality target data. Finally, we compare our results with the method proposed by Raissi, et al. arXiv:1801.01236 (2018) and with SINDy.

Specifically we reconstruct the right-hand side of a system of ODEs $\dot{x}(t) = f(t, x(t))$ directly from observed uniformly time-sampled data using a neural network. In contrast with other neural network based approaches to this problem, we add a Lipschitz regularization term to our loss function. In the synthetic examples we observed empirically that this regularization results in a smoother approximating function and better generalization properties when compared with non-regularized models, both on trajectory and non-trajectory data, especially in presence of noise. In contrast with sparse regression approaches, since neural networks are universal approximators, we don't need any prior knowledge on the ODE system. Since the model is applied component wise, it can handle systems of any dimension, making it usable for real-world data.

The coupling of spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the trilayer Sr4Ru3O10 sets a long-standing puzzle, due to the peculiar anisotropic coexistence of out-of-plane ferromagnetism and in-plane metamagnetism. Recently, the induced magnetic structure by in-plane applied fields has been investigated by means of spin-polarized neutron diffraction, which allowed to extract a substantial orbital component of the magnetic densities at Ru sites. It has been argued that the latter is at the origin of the evident layer dependent magnetic anisotropy, where the inner layers carry larger magnetic moments than the outer ones. We present a spin-polarized neutron diffraction study in order to characterize the nature of the ferromagnetic state of Sr4Ru3O10, in the presence of a magnetic field applied along the c-axis. The components of the magnetic densities at the Ru sites reveal a vanishing contribution of the orbital magnetic moment which is unexpected for a material system where orbital and spin degeneracy are lifted by spin-orbit coupling and ferromagnetism. We employ a model that includes the Coulomb interaction and spin-orbit coupling at the Ru site to address the origin of the suppression of the orbital magnetic moment. The emerging scenario is that of non-local orbital degrees of freedom playing a significant role in the ferromagnetic phase, with the Coulomb interaction that is crucial to make anti-aligned orbital moments at short distance resulting in a ground state with vanishing local orbital moments.

We have investigated the metamagnetic-like transition in the triple layer ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10 by means of neutron diffraction from single crystals. The magnetic structure of the compound appears to be determined in a complex way by the two substructures of inequivalent ruthenium ions. At Tc=105K the system has a sharp transition into a ferromagnetic state along the c-axis which is driven by the ruthenium atoms in the central octahedra of the triple layers whereas the substructure of the outer ruthenium atoms tend to align in the ab plane achieving an antiferromagnetic order at the metamagnetic transition T*~50K. Below T* the strong anisotropy along c prevails, the outer ruthenium tend to align along the c-axis and the in-plane antiferromagnetic order disappears. This finding confirms the delicate balance between antiferro and ferromagnetic couplings in the (Sr,Ca)n+1RunO3n+1 family of compounds, and proves the layer dependence of the magnetic anisotropy in Sr4Ru3O10.

Our estimates are derived assuming that (i) the control distance $d$ generated by $\X$ induces the same topology on $\M$; (ii) a doubling condition for the $μ$-measure of $d-$metric balls and (iii) the validity of a Poincaré inequality involving $\X$ and $μ$. Our results extend the recent work in \cite{DiBenedettoGianazzaVespri1}, \cite{K}, to a more general setting including the model cases of (1) metrics generated by Hörmander vector fields and Lebesgue measure; (2) Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature and Riemannian volume forms; and (3) metrics generated by non-smooth Baouendi-Grushin type vector fields and Lebesgue measure. In all cases the Harnack inequality continues to hold when the Lebesgue measure is substituted by any smooth volume form or by measures with densities corresponding to Muckenhoupt type weights.

The pressure dependence of the Curie temperature T$_{C}(P)$ in La$_{0.75}$Ca$_{0.25}$MnO$_{3}$ was determined by neutron diffraction up to 8 GPa, and compared with the metallization temperature T$_{IM}(P)$ \cite{irprl}. The behavior of the two temperatures appears similar over the whole pressure range suggesting a key role of magnetic double exchange also in the pressure regime where the superexchange interaction is dominant. Coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic peaks at high pressure and low temperature indicates a phase separated regime which is well reproduced with a dynamical mean-field calculation for a simplified model. Magnetic structures compatible with the lattice symmetry were identified by a group-theoretical analysis, and their magnetic structure factors were compared to the experimentally observed Bragg intensities. In conjunction with other experimental data, this analysis yields an elliptical helix structure in which both the helicity and the polarization plane alternate among copper-oxide chains. This magnetic ground state is discussed in the context of the recently reported multiferroic properties of other copper-oxide chain compounds.

We present the first neutron inelastic scattering results on the low temperature magnetic state of the three dimensional hyperkagomé compound Gd$_{3}$Ga$_{5}$O$_{12}$ (GGG). GGG is often classified as a strongly frustrated system with a manifold of continuously connected states. However, in contrast to the expectation of a continuum of gap-less excitations above a spin liquid-like ground state our results reveal three distinct inelastic modes found at 0.04(1), 0.12(2) an 0.58(3) meV at 0.06 K. The inelastic modes can be attributed to the magnetic ground state with the lowest and highest energy excitations showing spatial dependencies indicative of dimerized short range antiferromagnetic correlations. Short range correlations, reminiscent of spin liquid-like order, are static within the instrumental resolution (50 $μ$eV) and represent 82% of the spectral weight. Longer range correlations, first observed by Petrenko, et al.\cite{Petrenko1998, develop below 0.14 ~K within the elastic cross section. The short range static correlations and dynamic components survive to high temperatures, comparable to the nearest neighbor exchange interactions. Our results suggest that the ground state of a three dimensional hyperkagomé compound differs distinctly from its frustrated counterparts on a pyrochlore lattice and reveals a juxtaposition of spin liquid order and strong dimerised coupling.

The anisotropic complex dielectric response was accurately extracted from spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements at phonon frequencies for the three principal crystallographic directions of an orthorhombic (Pbnm) YTiO_3 single crystal. We identify all twenty five infrared-active phonon modes allowed by symmetry, 7B_1u, 9B_2u, and 9B_3u, polarized along the c-, b-, and a-axis, respectively. From a classical dispersion analysis of the complex dielectric functions \tildeε(ω) and their inverses -1/\tildeε(ω) we define the resonant frequencies, widths, and oscillator strengths of the transverse (TO) and longitudinal (LO) phonon modes. We calculate eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of B_1u, B_2u, and B_3u normal modes and suggest assignments of the TO phonon modes observed in our ellipsometry spectra by comparing their frequencies and oscillator strengths with those resulting from the present lattice-dynamics study. Based on these assignments, we estimate dynamical effective charges of the atoms in the YTiO_3 lattice. We find that, in general, the dynamical effective charges in YTiO_3 lattice are typical for a family of perovskite oxides. By contrast to a ferroelectric BaTiO_3, the dynamical effective charge of oxygen related to a displacement along the c-axis does not show the anomalously large value. At the same time, the dynamical effective charges of Y and ab-plane oxygen exhibit anisotropy, indicating strong hybridization along the a-axis.

Abstract:
In this paper we study the generalized mean curvature flow of sets in the sub-Riemannian geometry of Carnot groups. We extend to our context the level sets method and the weak (viscosity) solutions introduced in the Euclidean setting by Evans-Spruck and Chen-Giga-Goto. We establish two special cases of the comparison principle, existence, uniqueness and basic geometric properties of the flow.

Below $T_N = 23$ K, the neutron data indicate long-range collinear magnetic order with a spin density modulation whose propagation vector is commensurate along and incommensurate perpendicular to the chains. Competing interchain exchange interactions are discussed as a possible origin of the incommensurate magnetic order.

The three samples crystallize in the Pnma space group at both 290 K and 5 K and exhibit different magnetic structures at low temperature. In (La0.70Ca0.30)(Cr0.70Mn0.30)O3, antiferromagnetic order with a propagation vector k = 0 sets in. The magnetic structure is Gx, i.e. of the G-type with spins parallel to the a-axis. On the basis of our Rietveld refinement and the available magnetisation data, we speculate that only Cr3+ spins order, whereas Mn4+ act as a random magnetic impurity. In (La0.70Ca0.30)(Cr0.50Mn0.50)O3 the spin order is still of type Gx, although the net magnetic moment is smaller. No evidence for magnetic order of the Mn ions is observed. Finally, in (La0.70Ca0.30)(Cr0.15Mn0.85)O3 a ferromagnetic ordering of the Mn spins takes place, whereas the Cr3+ ions act as random magnetic impurities with randomly oriented spins.

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar do** level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

We report an inelastic light scattering study of single-crystalline NaCu$_2$O$_2$, a spin-chain compound known to exhibit a phase with helical magnetic order at low temperatures. Phonon excitations were studied as a function of temperature and light polarization, and the phonon frequencies are compared to the results of ab-initio lattice dynamical calculations, which are also reported here. The good agreement between the observed and calculated modes allows an assignment of the phonon eigenvectors. Two distinct high-energy two-magnon features as well as a sharp low-energy one-magnon peak were also observed. These features are discussed in terms of the magnon modes expected in a helically ordered state. Their polarization dependence provides evidence of substantial exchange interactions between two closely spaced spin chains within a unit cell. At high temperatures, the spectral features attributable to magnetic excitations are replaced by a broad, quasielastic mode due to overdamped spin excitations.

Below 13 K, we find a long-range ordered, incommensurate magnetic helix state with a propagation vector similar to that of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. In contrast to the Li analogue, substitutional disorder is negligible in NaCu$_2$O$_2$. We can thus rule out that the helix is induced by impurities, as was claimed on the basis of prior work on LiCu$_2$O$_2$. A spin Hamiltonian with frustrated longer-range exchange interactions provides a good description of both the ordered state and the paramagnetic susceptibility.

The wavevectors where the magnetic fluctuations are strongest are different from those observed in the superconducting single layer ruthenate Sr2RuO4 and appear to be determined by Fermi surface nesting. No antiferromagnetic ordering is observed for temperatures down to 1.5K. For temperatures T<20K, the fluctuations become predominately ferromagnetic. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements provide concrete evidence of the coexistence of competing interactions in Sr3Ru2O7 and of the low energy scale of the fluctuations.

The crystallographic (charge-ordered) and magnetic superstructures of La0.333Ca0.667MnO3 were studied by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray and neutron powder diffraction. In the antiferromagnetic structure, which was refined using a non-collinear model, the a lattice parameter is tripled and the c lattice parameter is doubled with respect to the average crystallographic unit cell (Pnma setting). The crystallographic structure below the charge-ordering temperature (TCO ~ 260 K) is characterized by ordering of the dz2 orbitals of the Jahn-Teller-distorted Mn3+O6 octahedra in the orthorhombic ac plane, and the appearance of superlattice peaks in the x-ray patterns corresponding to a tripling of the a axis lattice parameter. The intensities of the superlattice peaks can be accounted for satisfactorily in terms of ordering of the Mn3+ cations in sites as far apart as possible in the ac plane ("Wigner crystal" model) and transverse displacements of the Mn4+O6 octahedra in the c direction. These results are not consistent with a recently proposed model based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) data in which the Mn3+O6 octahedra are arranged in a stripe pattern ("stripe" model). In particular, the large longitudinal stripe modulation revealed by TEM is not observed, suggesting that the TEM data may not be representative of the bulk sample. Within the framework of the "Wigner crystal" model, the magnetic structure at 1.5 K and the charge-ordered superstructure at 160 K and 1.5 K were refined from the neutron data.
