We study gravitational perturbations on the near-horizon region of extremal and near-extremal rotating black holes in a general higher-derivative extension of Einstein gravity. We find a decoupled modified Teukolsky equation that rules the gravitational perturbations and that separates into an angular and a radial equation. The angular equation leads to a deformation of the spin-weighted spheroidal harmonics, while the radial equation takes the same form as in Kerr except for a modification of the angular separation constants. We provide a detailed analysis of the corrections to these angular separation constants and find analytic results for axisymmetric modes as well as in the eikonal limit. As an application, we reproduce recent results that show that extremal Kerr black holes in higher-derivative gravity become singular under certain deformations and extend them by including parity-breaking corrections, which we show lead to the same effect. Finally, we obtain constraints on the form of the full modified Teukolsky radial equation by demanding that it has the right near-horizon limit. These results serve as an step** stone towards the study of quasinormal modes of near-extremal black holes in higher-derivative extensions of GR.

We show that there is a fundamental flaw in the application of modified gravity theories in cosmology, taking $f(R)$ gravity as a paradigmatic example. This theory contains a scalar degree of freedom that couples to the matter stress-energy tensor but not to gravitational energy. However, when applied to cosmology this theory is unable to distinguish between gravitational and non-gravitational energy. Hence the cosmological version of the theory does not coincide with its own macroscopic average, and we show that this leads to order-one discrepancies. We argue that the same inconsistency is common to many other modified gravity theories with extra degrees of freedom. Our results put into question whether these theories can make sense as the cosmological average of a fundamental theory, hence challenging their physical significance.

We show via an explicit construction how an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections generically leads to a resolution of the Schwarzschild singularity in any spacetime dimension $D \ge 5$. The theories we consider have two key properties that ensure the results are general and robust: (1) they provide a basis for (vacuum) gravitational effective field theory in five and higher-dimensions, (2) for each value of the mass, they have a unique static spherically symmetric solution. We present several exact solutions of the theories that include the Hayward black hole and metrics similar to the Bardeen and Dymnikova ones. Unlike previous constructions, these regular black holes arise as vacuum solutions, as we include no matter fields whatsoever in our analysis. We show how the black hole thermodynamics can be studied in a completely universal and unambiguous way for all solutions.

When quantum gravity effects are included, we argue that a new type of transition arises, giving rise to Kasner eons: periods which are dominated by emergent physics at each energy scale. We comment on the different ways in which the Einsteinian eon may come to an end and show explicitly how additional Kasner eons arise in the interior of a black hole solution due to higher-derivative corrections.

Higher-derivative corrections in the AdS/CFT correspondence allow us to capture finer details of the dual CFT and to explore the holographic dictionary beyond the infinite N and strong coupling limits. Following an effective field theory approach, we investigate extremal AdS black hole solutions in five-dimensional supergravity with higher-derivative corrections. We provide a general analysis of near-horizon geometries of rotating extremal black holes and show how to obtain their corresponding charges and chemical potentials. We discuss the near-horizon solutions of the two-derivative theory, which we write using a novel parametrization that eases our computation of the higher-derivative corrections. The charges and thermodynamic properties of the black hole are computed while clarifying the ambiguities in their definitions. The charges and potentials turn out to satisfy a near-horizon version of the first law of thermodynamics whose interpretation we make clear. In the supersymmetric case, the results are shown to match the field theory prediction as well as previous results obtained from the on-shell action.

We present a top-down construction of a three-dimensional non-local theory of massive gravity. This "Non-Local Massive Gravity" (NLMG) is obtained as the gravitational theory induced by Einstein gravity on a brane inserted in Anti-de Sitter space modified by an overall minus sign. The theory involves an infinite series of increasingly complicated higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the quadratic term coinciding with New Massive Gravity. We obtain an analytic formula for the quadratic action of NLMG and show that its linearized spectrum consists of an infinite tower of positive-energy massive spin-2 modes. We compute the Newtonian potential and show that the introduction of the infinite series of terms makes it behave as $\sim 1/r$ at short distances, as opposed to the logarithmic behavior encountered when the series is truncated at any finite order. We use this and input from brane-world holography to argue that the theory may contain asymptotically flat black hole solutions.

Boson stars arise as solutions of a massive complex scalar field coupled to gravity. A variety of scalar potentials, giving rise to different types of boson stars, have been studied in the literature. Here we study instead the effect of promoting the kinetic term of the scalar field to a nonlinear sigma model -- an extension that is naturally motivated by UV completions of gravity like string theory. We consider the $\mathrm{O}(3)$ and $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ sigma models with minimally interacting potentials and obtain their boson star solutions. We study the maximum mass and compactness of the solutions as a function of the curvature of the sigma model and compare the results to the prototypical case of mini boson stars, which are recovered in the case of vanishing curvature. The effect of the curvature turns out to be dramatic. While $\mathrm{O}(3)$ stars are massive and can reach a size as compact as $R\sim 3.3 GM$, $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ stars are much more diffuse and only astrophysically viable if the bosons are ultralight. These results show that the scalar kinetic term is at least as important as the potential in determining the properties of boson stars.

We study various aspects of higher-curvature theories of gravity built from contractions of the metric, the Riemann tensor and the covariant derivative, $\mathcal{L}(g^{ab},R_{abcd},\nabla_a)$. We characterise the linearized spectrum of these theories and compute the modified Newton potential in the general case. Then, we present the first examples of Generalized Quasi-topological (GQT) gravities involving covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor. We argue that they always have second-order equations on maximally symmetric backgrounds. Focusing on four spacetime dimensions, we find new densities of that type involving eight and ten derivatives of the metric. In the latter case, we find new modifications of the Schwarzschild black hole. These display thermodynamic properties which depart from the ones of polynomial GQT black holes. In particular, the relation between the temperature and the mass of small black holes, $T\sim M^{1/3}$, which universally holds for general polynomial GQT modifications of Einstein gravity, gets modified in the presence of the new density with covariant derivatives to $T\sim M^{3}$. Finally, we consider brane-world gravities induced by Einstein gravity in the AdS bulk. We show that the effective quadratic action for the brane-world theory involving arbitrary high-order terms in the action can be written explicitly in a closed form in terms of Bessel functions. We use this result to compute the propagator of metric perturbations on the brane and its pole structure in various dimensions, always finding infinite towers of ghost modes, as well as tachyons and more exotic modes in some cases.

We do so perturbatively to leading order in the higher-derivative couplings and up to order fourteen in the black hole angular momentum. This allows us to accurately predict quasinormal mode frequencies of black holes with spins up to about $70\%$ of the extremal value. For some higher-derivative corrections, we find that sizable rotation enhances the frequency shifts by almost an order of magnitude relative to the static case.

Near-future, space-based, radio- and gravitational-wave interferometry missions will enable us to rigorously test whether the Kerr solution of general relativity accurately describes astrophysical black holes, or if it requires some kind of modification. At the same time, recent work has greatly improved our understanding of theories of gravity that modify the Einstein-Hilbert action with terms quadratic in the curvature, allowing us to calculate black hole solutions to (essentially) arbitrary order in a slow-rotation expansion. Observational constraints of such quadratic gravity theories require the calculation of observables that are robust against the expansion order of the black hole solution used.
We carry out such a study here and determine the accuracy with respect to expansion order of ten observables associated with the spacetime outside a rotating black hole in two quadratic theories of gravity, dynamical-Chern-Simons and scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We find that for all but the most rapidly rotating black holes, only about the first eight terms in the spin expansion are necessary to achieve an accuracy that is better than the statistical uncertainties of current and future missions.

We apply this to six-derivative gravity to compute the shifts in the quasinormal mode frequencies with respect to those of Kerr black holes in general relativity. At linear order in the angular momentum we reproduce earlier results obtained with a metric perturbation approach. In contrast with this earlier work, however, the method given here applies also to post-merger black holes with significant spin, which are of particular observational interest.

We investigate higher derivative corrections to the extremal Kerr black hole in the context of heterotic string theory with $α'$ corrections and of a cubic-curvature extension of general relativity. By analyzing the near-horizon extremal geometry of these black holes, we are able to compute the Iyer-Wald entropy as well as the angular momentum via generalized Komar integrals. In the case of the stringy corrections, we obtain the physically relevant relation $S(J)$ at order $α'^2$. On the other hand, the cubic theories, which are chosen as Einsteinian cubic gravity plus a new odd-parity density with analogous features, possess special integrability properties that enable us to obtain exact results in the higher-derivative couplings. This allows us to find the relation $S(J)$ at arbitrary orders in the couplings and even to study it in a non-perturbative way. We also extend our analysis to the case of the extremal Kerr-(A)dS black hole.

The construction of Quasi-topological gravities in three-dimensions requires coupling a scalar field to the metric. As shown in arXiv:2104.10172, the resulting "Electromagnetic" Quasi-topological (EQT) theories admit charged black hole solutions characterized by a single-function for the metric, $-g_{tt}=g^{-1}_{rr}\equiv f(r)$, and a simple azimuthal form for the scalar. Such black holes, whose metric can be determined fully analytically, generalize the BTZ solution in various ways, including singularity-free black holes without any fine-tuning of couplings or parameters. In this paper we extend the family of EQT theories to general curvature orders. We show that, beyond linear order, $f(r)$ satisfies a second-order differential equation rather than an algebraic one, making the corresponding theories belong to the Electromagnetic Generalized Quasi-topological (EGQT) class. We prove that at each curvature order, the most general EGQT density is given by a single term which contributes nontrivially to the equation of $f(r)$ plus densities which do not contribute at all to such equation. The proof relies on the counting of the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities of the form $\mathcal{L}(R_{ab},\partial_a φ)$, which we carry out. We study some general aspects of the new families of EGQT black-hole solutions, including their thermodynamic properties and the fulfillment of the first law, and explicitly construct a few of them numerically.

We carefully show that the various definitions of multipoles carry over from general relativity, and compute these multipoles for higher-derivative Kerr using the ACMC expansion formalism. We obtain the mass $M_{n}$ and current $S_{n}$ multipoles as a series expansions in the dimensionless spin; in some cases we are able to resum these series into closed-form expressions. Moreover, we observe the existence of intriguing relations between the corrections to the parity-odd multipoles $S_{2n}\neq 0$ and $M_{2n+1}\neq 0$ that break equatorial symmetry, and the parity-preserving corrections that only modify $S_{2n+1}$ and $M_{2n}$. Further, we comment on the higher-derivative corrections to multipole ratios for Kerr, and we discuss the phenomenological implications of the corrections to the multipole moments for current and future gravitational wave experiments.

Their defining properties include possessing second-order linearized equations of motion around maximally symmetric backgrounds as well as non-hairy generalizations of Schwarzschild's black hole characterized by a single function, $f(r)\equiv - g_{tt}=g_{rr}^{-1}$, which satisfies a second-order differential equation. In arXiv:1909.07983 GQTGs were shown to exist at all orders in curvature and for general $D$. In this paper we prove that, in fact, $n-1$ inequivalent classes of order-$n$ GQTGs exist for $D\geq 5$. Amongst these, we show that one -- and only one -- type of densities is of the Quasi-topological kind, namely, such that the equation for $f(r)$ is algebraic. Our arguments do not work for $D=4$, in which case there seems to be a single unique GQT density at each order which is not of the Quasi-topological kind. We compute the thermodynamic charges of the most general $D$-dimensional order-$n$ GQTG, verify that they satisfy the first law and provide evidence that they can be entirely written in terms of the embedding function which determines the maximally symmetric vacua of the theory.

These "charged Rényi entropies" are functions of the chemical potential $μ$ conjugate to the charge contained in the entangling region and reduce to the usual notions as $μ\rightarrow 0$. For $n=1$, this provides a notion of charged entanglement entropy. In this letter we prove that for a general $d (\geq 3)$-dimensional CFT, the leading correction to the uncharged entanglement entropy across a spherical entangling surface is quadratic in the chemical potential, positive definite, and universally controlled (up to fixed $d$-dependent constants) by the coefficients $C_J$ and $a_2$. These fully characterize, for a given theory, the current correlators $\langle JJ\rangle $ and $\langle TJJ \rangle$, as well as the energy flux measured at infinity produced by the insertion of the current operator. Our result is motivated by analytic holographic calculations for a special class of higher-curvature gravities coupled to a $(d-2)$-form in general dimensions as well as for free-fields in $d=4$. A proof for general theories and dimensions follows from previously known universal identities involving the magnetic response of twist operators introduced in arXiv:1310.4180 and basic thermodynamic relations.

We carry out an extensive study of the holographic aspects of any-dimensional higher-derivative Einstein-Maxwell theories in a fully analytic and non-perturbative fashion. We achieve this by introducing the $d$-dimensional version of Electromagnetic Quasitopological gravities: higher-derivative theories of gravity and electromagnetism that propagate no additional degrees of freedom and that allow one to study charged black hole solutions analytically. These theories contain non-minimal couplings, that in the holographic context give rise to a modified $\langle JJ\rangle$ correlator as well as to a general $\langle TJJ \rangle$ structure whose coefficients we compute. We constrain the couplings of the theory by imposing CFT unitarity and positivity of energy (which we show to be equivalent to causality in the bulk) as well as positive-entropy bounds from the weak gravity conjecture. The thermodynamic properties of the dual plasma at finite chemical potential are studied in detail, and we find that exotic zeroth-order phase transitions may appear, but that many of them are ruled out by the physical constraints. We further compute the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, and we show that it can be taken to zero while respecting all the constraints, providing that the chemical potential is large enough. We also obtain the charged Rényi entropies and we observe that the chemical potential always increases the amount of entanglement and that the usual properties of Rényi entropies are preserved if the physical constraints are met. Finally, we compute the scaling dimension and magnetic response of twist operators and we provide a holographic derivation of the universal relations between the expansion of these quantities and the coefficients of $\langle JJ\rangle$ and $\langle TJJ \rangle$.

We present new results involving general higher-curvature gravities in three dimensions. The most general Lagrangian can be written as a function of the Ricci scalar $R$, $\mathcal{S}_2\equiv \tilde R_{a}^b \tilde R_b^a$ and $\mathcal{S}_3\equiv \tilde R_a^b \tilde R_b^c \tilde R_c^a$ where $\tilde R_{ab}$ is the traceless part of the Ricci tensor. First, we provide a formula for the exact number of independent order-$n$ densities, $\#(n)$. This satisfies the identity $\#(n-6)=\#(n)-n$. Then, we show that, linearized around a general Einstein solution, a generic order-$n\geq 2$ density can be written as a linear combination of $R^n$, which does not propagate the generic massive graviton, plus a density which does not propagate the generic scalar mode, $R^n-12n(n-1)R^{n-2}\mathcal{S}_2$, plus $\#(n)-2$ densities which contribute trivially to the linearized equations. Next, we obtain an analytic formula for the quasinormal frequencies of the BTZ black hole for a general theory. Then, we provide a recursive formula as well as a general closed expression for order-$n$ densities which non-trivially satisfy an holographic c-theorem, clarify their relation with Born-Infeld gravities and prove that they never propagate the scalar mode. We show that at each order there exist $\#(n-6)$ densities which satisfy the holographic c-theorem trivially and that all of them are proportional to a single sextic density $Ω_{(6)}\equiv 6 \mathcal{S}_3^2-\mathcal{S}_2^3$. We prove that there are also $\#(n-6)$ order-$n$ Generalized Quasi-topological densities in three dimensions, all of which are "trivial" in the sense of making no contribution to the metric function equation. The set of such densities turns out to coincide exactly with the one of theories trivially satisfying the holographic c-theorem. We comment on the relation of $Ω_{(6)}$ to the Segre classification of three-dimensional metrics.

We study extremal 5- and 4-dimensional black hole solutions of the Heterotic Superstring effective action at first order in $α'$ with, respectively, 3 and 4 charges of arbitrary signs. For a particular choice of the relative signs of these charges the solutions are supersymmetric, but other signs give rise to non-supersymmetric extremal black holes. Although at zeroth order all these solutions are formally identical, we show that the $α'$ corrections are drastically different depending on how we break supersymmetry. We provide fully analytic $\mathcal{O}(α')$ solutions and we compute their charges, masses and entropies and check that they are invariant under $α'$-corrected T-duality transformations. The masses of some of these black holes are corrected in a complicated way, but we show that the shift is always negative, in agreement with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Our formula for the corrected entropy of the four-dimensional black holes generalizes previous results obtained from the entropy function method, as we consider a more general way in which supersymmetry can be broken.

We revisit the four-dimensional theory of gravity that arises from string theory with higher-derivative corrections. By compactifying and truncating the ten-dimensional effective action of heterotic string theory at first order in $α'$, and carefully dealing with field redefinitions, we show that the four-dimensional theory takes the form of an axidilaton model where the scalars couple to the Gauss-Bonnet and Pontryagin densities. Thus, the actual string gravity is a generalization of the well-studied Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet and dynamical Chern-Simons models. Using this action we compute the stringy corrections to the Kerr geometry and we obtain, for the first time, the corrections to the entropy of the Kerr black hole at order $α'^2$. We check that the first law of black hole mechanics is satisfied and discuss several properties of the solution. Our results suggest that there exist black hole solutions with $J>M^2$ and therefore the extremal ratio $J/M^2$ must be modified positively.

We study gravitational perturbations of slowly-rotating black holes in a general effective-field-theory extension of general relativity that includes up to eight-derivative terms. We show that two Schrödinger-like equations with spin-dependent effective potentials govern the odd - and even-parity master variables. These equations are coupled for parity-violating corrections, and this coupling affects the quasinormal modes even at linear order in the higher-derivative corrections, due to their isospectrality in general relativity. We provide results for the shifts in the fundamental quasinormal mode frequencies at linear order in the spin, which we expect to be valuable for high-precision phenomenology through future gravitational wave observations.

We study nonminimal extensions of Einstein-Maxwell theory with exact electromagnetic duality invariance. Any such theory involves an infinite tower of higher-derivative terms whose computation and summation usually represents a challenging problem. Despite that, we manage to obtain a closed form of the action for all the theories with a quadratic dependence on the vector field strength. In these theories we find that the Maxwell field couples to gravity through a curvature-dependent susceptibility tensor that takes a peculiar form, reminiscent of that of Born-Infeld Lagrangians. We study the static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions of the simplest of these models, showing that the corresponding equations of motion are invariant under rotations of the electric and magnetic charges. We compute the perturbative corrections to the Reissner-Nordström solution in this theory, and in the case of extremal black holes we determine exactly the near-horizon geometry as well as the entropy. Remarkably, the entropy only possesses a constant correction despite the action containing an infinite number of terms. In addition, we find there is a lower bound for the charge and the mass of extremal black holes. When the sign of the coupling is such that the weak gravity conjecture is satisfied, the area and the entropy of extremal black holes vanish at the minimal charge.

We find a plethora of new analytic black holes and globally regular horizonless spacetimes in three dimensions. The solutions involve a single real scalar field $φ$ which always admits a magnetic-like expression proportional to the angular coordinate. The new metrics, which satisfy $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and represent continuous generalizations of the BTZ one, solve the equations of Einstein gravity corrected by a new family of densities (controlled by unconstrained couplings) constructed from positive powers of $(\partial φ)^2$ and certain linear combinations of $R^{ab} \partial_a φ\partial_b φ$ and $(\partial φ)^2 R$. Some of the solutions obtained describe black holes with one or several horizons. A set of them possesses curvature singularities, while others have conical or BTZ-like ones. Interestingly, in some cases the black holes have no singularity at all, being completely regular. Some of the latter are achieved without any kind of fine tuning or constraint between the action parameters and/or the physical charges of the solution. An additional class of solutions describes globally regular and horizonless geometries.

We investigate higher-derivative extensions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that are invariant under electromagnetic duality rotations, allowing for non-minimal couplings between gravity and the gauge field. Working in a derivative expansion of the action, we characterize the Lagrangians giving rise to duality-invariant theories up to the eight-derivative level, providing the complete list of operators that one needs to include in the action. We also characterize the set of duality-invariant theories whose action is quadratic in the Maxwell field strength but which are non-minimally coupled to the curvature. Then we explore the effect of field redefinitions and we show that, to six derivatives, the most general duality-preserving theory can be mapped to Maxwell theory minimally coupled to a higher-derivative gravity containing only four non-topological higher-order operators. We conjecture that this is a general phenomenon at all orders, i.e, that any duality-invariant extension of Einstein-Maxwell theory is perturbatively equivalent to a higher-derivative gravity minimally coupled to Maxwell theory. Finally, we study charged black hole solutions in the six-derivative theory and we investigate additional constraints on the couplings motivated by the weak gravity conjecture.

We review and extend results on higher-curvature corrections to different configurations describing a superposition of heterotic strings, KK monopoles, solitonic 5-branes and momentum waves. Depending on which sources are present, the low-energy fields describe a black hole, a soliton or a naked singularity. We show that this property is unaltered when perturbative higher-curvature corrections are included, provided the sources are fixed. On the other hand, this character may be changed by appropriate introduction (or removal) of sources regardless of the presence of curvature corrections, which constitutes a non-perturbative modification of the departing system. The general system of multicenter KK monopoles and their 5-brane charge induced by higher-curvature corrections is discussed in some detail, with special attention paid to the possibility of merging monopoles. Our results are particularly relevant for small black holes (Dabholkar-Harvey states, DH), which remain singular after quadratic curvature corrections are taken into account. When there are four non-compact dimensions, we notice the existence of a black hole with regular horizon whose entropy coincides with that of the DH states, but the charges and supersymmetry preserved by both configurations are different. A similar construction with five non-compact dimensions is possible, in this case with the same charges as DH, although it fails to reproduce the DH entropy and supersymmetry. No such configuration exists if $d>5$, which we interpret as reflecting the necessity of having a 5-brane wrap** the compact space.

We study the scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of planar AdS$_4$ black holes with NUT charge. In the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions describe a thermal quantum field theory embedded in a Gödel-type universe with closed time-like curves. For a given temperature and NUT charge, two different planar Taub-NUT solutions exist, but we show that only the one with a positive specific heat contributes to the Euclidean saddle point in the path integral. By using the Newman-Penrose formalism, we then derive the master equations satisfied by scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations in this background, and show that the corresponding equations are separable. Interestingly, the solutions pile up in the form of Landau levels, and hence are characterized by a single quantum number $q$. We determine the appropriate boundary conditions satisfied by the master variables and using these we compute the quasinormal modes of scalar and gravitational perturbations. On the other hand, electromagnetic perturbations depend on a free parameter whose determination is problematic. We find that all the scalar and gravitational QNM frequencies lie in the lower half of the complex plane, indicating that these Taub-NUT spacetimes are stable. We discuss the implications of these results in the light of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

We put forward novel extensions of Starobinsky inflation, involving a class of 'geometric' higher-curvature corrections that yield second-order Friedmann-Lemaître equations and second-order-in-time linearized equations around cosmological backgrounds. We determine the range of models within this class that admit an extended phase of slow roll inflation as an attractor. By embedding these theories in anti-de Sitter space, we derive holographic 'unitarity' bounds on the two dominant higher-order curvature corrections. Finally we compute the leading corrections to the spectral properties of scalar and tensor primordial perturbations, including the modified consistency relation $r=-8n_{T}$. Remarkably, the range of models singled out by holography nearly coincides with the current observational bounds on the scalar spectral tilt. Our results indicate that future observations have the potential to discriminate between different higher-curvature corrections considered here.

We identify a set of higher-derivative extensions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that allow for spherically symmetric charged solutions characterized by a single metric function $f(r)=-g_{tt}=1/g_{rr}$. These theories are a non-minimally coupled version of the recently constructed Generalized Quasitopological gravities and they satisfy a number of properties that we establish. We study magnetically-charged black hole solutions in these new theories and we find that for some of them the equations of motion can be fully integrated, enabling us to obtain analytic solutions. In those cases we show that, quite generally, the singularity at the core of the black hole is removed by the higher-derivative corrections and that the solution describes a globally regular geometry. In other cases, the equations are reduced to a second order equation for $f(r)$. Nevertheless, for all the theories it is possible to study the thermodynamic properties of charged black holes analytically. We show that the first law of thermodynamics holds exactly and that the Euclidean and Noether-charge methods provide equivalent results. We then study extremal black holes, focusing on the corrections to the extremal charge-to-mass ratio at a non-perturbative level. We observe that in some theories there are no extremal black holes below certain mass. We also show the existence of theories for which extremal black holes do not represent the minimal mass state for a given charge. The implications of these findings for the evaporation process of black holes are discussed.

Recently, the identification of new higher-curvature interactions known as Einsteinian cubic gravity (ECG) and Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQGs) has allowed for important advances in the study of black hole solutions and holographic applications of higher-order gravity. These theories are characterized by having second-order linearized equations on maximally symmetric background and by possessing static, spherically symmetric (SSS) black hole solutions satisfying $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$, and whose thermodynamic properties can be studied analytically in a fully non-perturbative fashion. In the first part of this thesis, we perform a detailed analysis of the weak-field limit of $\mathcal{L}($Riemann$)$ theories and of the condition $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ on SSS solutions, and we review the construction of ECG and Generalized quasi-topological gravities. In addition, we show that GQGs could serve as building blocks to construct the most general EFT for gravity. In the second part we study the non-perturbative corrections to the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole in $D=4$. We obtain closed exact expressions for the thermodynamic properties of spherically symmetric black holes with an arbitrary number of higher-curvature terms. We find that, quite generally, the higher-curvature corrections make the specific heat of these black holes positive below certain mass, and hence black holes take an infinite time to evaporate and the final "Hawking explosion" is avoided. In the last part we study asymptotically AdS black holes and Euclidean-AdS-Taub-NUT solutions and we establish various entries of the holographic dictionary of $D=4$ ECG. We illustrate the power of holographic higher-order gravities by obtaining a relation for the free energy of CFTs on squashed spheres, which we conjecture to be valid for arbitrary CFTs.

We study the first-order in $α'$ corrections to non-extremal 4-dimensional dyonic Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes with equal electric and magnetic charges in the context of Heterotic Superstring effective field theory (HST) compactified on a $T^{6}$. The particular embedding of the dyonic RN black hole in HST considered here is not supersymmetric in the extremal limit. We show that, at first order in $α'$, consistency with the equations of motion of the HST demands additional scalar and vector fields become active, and we provide explicit expressions for all of them. We determine analytically the position of the event horizon of the black hole, as well as the corrections to the extremality bound, to the temperature and to the entropy, checking that they are related by the first law of black-hole thermodynamics, so that $\partial S/\partial M=1/T$. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, clarifying that entropy corrections for fixed mass and charge at extremality do not necessarily imply corrections to the extremal charge-to-mass ratio.

We show that the AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ near-horizon geometry of Reissner-Nordström black holes receives no corrections, but deviations with respect to the extremal Kerr-Newman solution appear as we turn on the angular momentum. We construct the profile of these corrected geometries using both numerical methods and slowly-spinning expansions, but we also find additional solutions that do not reduce to AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ geometries in any limit and that do not have a counterpart in Einstein gravity. Quite remarkably, we are able to obtain closed-form exact expressions for the area and Wald's entropy of all of these solutions, and using this result, we analyze the phase space of extremal back holes in this theory. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the entropy of a rotating black hole in higher-order gravity has been exactly computed.

A mild version of the weak gravity conjecture (WGC) states that extremal black holes have charge-to-mass ratio larger or equal than one when higher-curvature interactions are taken into account. Since these corrections become more relevant in the low-mass regime, this would allow the decay of extremal black holes in terms of energy and charge conservation. Evidence in this direction has been mainly given in the context of corrections to Einstein-Maxwell theory. Here we compute corrections to the charge-to-mass ratio of some dyonic extremal black holes explicitly embedded in the heterotic string effective theory. We find that modifications of the extremality bound depend on the solution considered, with the charge-to-mass ratio remaining unchanged or deviating positively from one. Additionally, we observe that the introduction of the higher-curvature terms increases the Wald entropy in all cases considered, whose variation does not seem to be correlated with the charge-to-mass ratio, contrary to the situation in Einstein-Maxwell theory.

A new class of higher-curvature modifications of $D(\geq 4$)-dimensional Einstein gravity has been recently identified. Densities belonging to this "Generalized quasi-topological" class (GQTGs) are characterized by possessing non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild black hole satisfying $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and by having second-order equations of motion when linearized around maximally symmetric backgrounds. GQTGs for which the equation of the metric function $f(r)\equiv -g_{tt}$ is algebraic are called "Quasi-topological" and only exist for $D\geq 5$. In this paper we prove that GQTG and Quasi-topological densities exist in general dimensions and at arbitrarily high curvature orders. We present recursive formulas which allow for the systematic construction of $n$-th order densities of both types from lower order ones, as well as explicit expressions valid at any order. We also obtain the equation satisfied by $f(r)$ for general $D$ and $n$. Our results here tie up the remaining loose end in the proof presented in arXiv:1906.00987 that every gravitational effective action constructed from arbitrary contractions of the metric and the Riemann tensor is equivalent, through a metric redefinition, to some GQTG.

Generalized quasi-topological gravities (GQTGs) are higher-curvature extensions of Einstein gravity characterized by the existence of non-hairy generalizations of the Schwarzschild black hole which satisfy $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$, as well as for having second-order linearized equations around maximally symmetric backgrounds. In this paper we provide strong evidence that any gravitational effective action involving higher-curvature corrections is equivalent, via metric redefinitions, to some GQTG. In the case of theories involving invariants constructed from contractions of the Riemann tensor and the metric, we show this claim to be true as long as (at least) one non-trivial GQTG invariant exists at each order in curvature ---and extremely conclusive evidence suggests this is the case in general dimensions. When covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor are included, the evidence provided is not as definitive, but we still prove the claim explicitly for all theories including up to eight derivatives of the metric as well as for terms involving arbitrary contractions of two covariant derivatives of the Riemann tensor and any number of Riemann tensors. Our results suggest that the physics of generic higher-curvature gravity black holes is captured by their GQTG counterparts, dramatically easier to characterize and universal. As an example, we map the gravity sector of the Type-IIB string theory effective action in AdS$_5$ at order $\mathcal{O}({α^{\prime}}^3)$ to a GQTG and show that the thermodynamic properties of black holes in both frames match.

We compute the most general leading-order correction to Kerr solution when the Einstein-Hilbert action is supplemented with higher-derivative terms, including the possibility of dynamical couplings controlled by scalars. The model we present depends on five parameters and it contains, as particular cases, Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, dynamical Chern-Simons gravity and the effective action coming from Heterotic Superstring theory. By solving the corrected field equations, we find the modified Kerr metric that describes rotating black holes in these theories. We express the solution as a series in the spin parameter $χ$, and we show that including enough terms in the expansion we are able to describe black holes with large spin. For the computations in the text we use an expansion up to order $χ^{14}$, which is accurate for $χ<0.7$, but we provide as well a Mathematica notebook that computes the solution at any given order. We study several properties of the corrected black holes, such as geometry of the horizon, ergosphere, light rings and scalar hair. Some of the corrections violate parity, and we highlight in those cases plots of horizons and ergospheres without $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry.

We argue that the presence of an inflationary epoch is a natural, almost unavoidable, consequence of the existence of a sensible effective action involving an infinite tower of higher-curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action. No additional fields besides the metric are required. We show that a family of such corrections giving rise to a well-posed cosmological evolution exists and automatically replaces the radiation-dominated early-universe Big Bang by a singularity-free period of exponential growth of the scale factor, which is gracefully connected with standard late-time $Λ$CDM cosmology. The class of higher-curvature theories giving rise to sensible cosmological evolution share additional remarkable properties such as the existence of Schwarzschild-like non-hairy black holes, or the fact that, just like for Einstein gravity, the only degrees of freedom propagated on the vacuum are those of the standard graviton.

Small black holes in string theory are characterized by a classically singular horizon with vanishing Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. It has been argued that higher-curvature corrections resolve the horizon and that the associated Wald entropy is in agreement with the microscopic degeneracy. In this note we study the heterotic two-charge small black hole and question this result, which we claim is caused by a misidentification of the fundamental constituents of the system studied when higher-curvature interactions are present. On the one hand, we show that quadratic curvature corrections do not solve the singular horizon of small black holes. On the other, we argue that the resolution of the heterotic small black hole reported in the literature involves the introduction of solitonic 5-branes, whose asymptotic charge vanishes due to a screening effect induced by the higher-curvature interactions, and a Kaluza-Klein monopole, whose charge remains unscreened.

We study the first-order in $α'$ corrections to 4-charge black holes (with the Reissner-Nordström black hole as a particular example) beyond the near-horizon limit in the Heterotic Superstring effective action framework. The higher-curvature terms behave as delocalized sources in the equations of motion and in the Bianchi identity of the 3-form. For some charges, this introduces a shift between their values measured at the horizon and asymptotically. Some of these corrections and their associated charge shifts, but not all of them, can be canceled using appropriate SU$(2)$ instantons for the heterotic gauge fields. The entropy, computed using Wald's formula, is in agreement with the result obtained via microstate counting when the delocalized sources are properly taken into account.

We present several results concerning the free energy of odd-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) on squashed spheres. First, we propose a formula which computes this quantity for holographic CFTs dual to higher-curvature gravities with second-order linearized equations of motion. As opposed to standard on-shell action methods for Taub geometries, our formula is automatically UV-finite and only involves a simple evaluation of the corresponding bulk Lagrangian on an auxiliary pure-AdS space. The expression is closely related to the function determining the possible AdS vacua of the bulk theory in question, which we argue to act as a generating functional from which correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor can be easily characterized. Finally, based on holographic results and free-field numerical calculations, we conjecture that the subleading term in the squashing-parameter free-energy expansion is universally controlled by the stress-tensor three-point function charge $t_4$ for general $(2+1)$-dimensional CFTs.

We construct a plethora of new Euclidean AdS-Taub-NUT and bolt solutions of several four- and six-dimensional higher-curvature theories of gravity with various base spaces $\mathcal{B}$. In $D=4$, we consider Einsteinian cubic gravity, for which we construct solutions with $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{S}^2,\mathbb{T}^2$. These represent the first generalizations of the Einstein gravity Taub-NUT/bolt solutions for any higher-curvature theory in four dimensions. In $D=6$, we show that no new solutions are allowed for any Generalized quasi-topological gravity at cubic order. They exist however when we consider quartic Quasi-topological and Generalized quasi-topological terms, for which we construct new solutions with $\mathcal{B}=\mathbb{CP}^2,\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{S}^2,\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2,\mathbb{T}^2\times\mathbb{T}^2$. In all cases, the solutions are characterized by a single metric function, and they reduce to the corresponding ones in Einstein gravity when the higher-curvature couplings are set to zero. While the explicit profiles must be constructed numerically (except for a few cases), we obtain fully analytic expressions for the thermodynamic properties of all solutions. The new solutions present important differences with respect to Einstein gravity, including regular bolts for arbitrary values of the NUT charge, critical points, and re-entrant phase transitions.

We study the first-order $α'$ corrections to the singular 4-dimensional massless stringy black holes studied in the nineties in the context of the Heterotic Superstring. We show that the $α'$ corrections not only induce a non-vanishing mass and give rise to an event horizon, but also eliminate the singularity giving rise to a regular spacetime whose global structure includes further asymptotically flat regions in which the spacetime's mass is positive or negative. We study the timelike and null geodesics and their effective potential, showing that the spacetime is geodesically complete. We discuss the validity of this solution, arguing that the very interesting and peculiar properties of the solution are associated to the negative energy contributions coming from the terms quadratic in the curvature. As a matter of fact, the 10-dimensional configuration is singular. We extract some general lessons on attempts to eliminate black-hole singularities by introducing terms of higher order in the curvature.

Using the "Complexity = Action" framework we compute the late time growth of complexity for charged black holes in Lovelock gravity. Our calculation is facilitated by the fact that the null boundaries of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch do not contribute at late times and essential contributions coming from the joints are now understood arXiv:1803.00172. The late time growth rate reduces to a difference of internal energies associated with the inner and outer horizons, and in the limit where the mass is much larger than the charge, we reproduce the celebrated result of $2M/π$ with corrections proportional to the highest Lovelock coupling in even (boundary) dimensions. We find in some cases a minimum mass below which complexity remains effectively constant, even if the black hole contains a non-degenerate horizon.

We consider the well-known solution of the Heterotic Superstring effective action to zeroth order in $α'$ that describes the intersection of a fundamental string with momentum and a solitonic 5-brane and which gives a 3-charge, static, extremal, supersymmetric black hole in 5 dimensions upon dimensional reduction on $\mathrm{T}^{5}$. We compute explicitly the first-order in $α'$ corrections to this solution, including $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Yang-Mills fields which can be used to cancel some of these corrections and we study the main properties of this $α'$-corrected solution: supersymmetry, values of the near-horizon and asymptotic charges, behavior under $α'$-corrected T-duality, value of the entropy (using Wald formula directly in 10 dimensions), existence of small black holes etc. The value obtained for the entropy agrees, within the limits of approximation, with that obtained by microscopic methods. The $α'$ corrections coming from Wald's formula prove crucial for this result.
