Excitons, or bound electron-hole pairs, play a crucial role in the optical response of monolayer, 2H-phase transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). They hold significant promise for the development of novel quantum opto-electronic devices due to their large binding energies and strong spin-orbit coupling. Among the monolayer TMDs, MoTe2 stands out because of its bandgap in the near-infrared (NIR) regime. Here, we report the experimental observation of NIR Rydberg excitons and conduction band-split charged excitons, in high-quality, boron nitride (BN)-encapsulated monolayer MoTe2 devices, probed by photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectroscopy. By employing a graphite bottom gate, we successfully modulate the emission intensity of various excitonic species. Additionally, our device fabrication process within an argon-filled glove box ensures clean TMD/metal electrode interfaces, enabling the construction of p-n junctions near the electrodes. Our work significantly advances our understanding of excitons in monolayer TMDs and contributes to the application of MoTe2 in NIR quantum opto-electronic devices.

Composite quasi-particles with emergent functionalities in spintronic and quantum information science can be realized in correlated materials due to entangled charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here we show that by reducing the lateral dimension of correlated antiferromagnet NiPS3 flakes to tens of nanometers, we can switch-off the bulk spin-orbit entangled exciton in the near-infrared (1.47 eV) and activate visible-range (1.8 to 2.2 eV) transitions with charge-transfer character. These ultra-sharp lines (<120 ueV at 4.2 K) share the spin-correlated nature of the bulk exciton by displaying a Neel temperature dependent linear polarization. Furthermore, exciton photoluminescence lineshape analysis reveals a polaronic character via coupling with at-least 3 phonon modes and a comb-like Stark effect through discretization of charges in each layer. These findings augment the knowledge on the many-body nature of excitonic quasi-particles in correlated antiferromagnets and also establish the nanoscale platform as promising for maturing integrated magneto-optic devices.

This paper proposes a strategy to assess the robustness of different machine learning models that involve natural language processing (NLP). The overall approach relies upon a Search and Semantically Replace strategy that consists of two steps: (1) Search, which identifies important parts in the text; (2) Semantically Replace, which finds replacements for the important parts, and constrains the replaced tokens with semantically similar words. We introduce different types of Search and Semantically Replace methods designed specifically for particular types of machine learning models. We also investigate the effectiveness of this strategy and provide a general framework to assess a variety of machine learning models. Finally, an empirical comparison is provided of robustness performance among three different model types, each with a different text representation.

We propose and design the high confinement InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y semiconductor waveguides and report the results of effective wavelength conversion based on this platform. Efficient confinement and mode field area fluctuation at different wavelength is analyzed to achieve the high nonlinear coefficient. The numerical results show that nearly zero phase-mismatch condition can be satisfied through dispersion tailoring of InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y waveguides, and the wavelength conversion ranging over 40 nm with the maximum conversion efficiency -26.3 dB is achieved for fixing pump power 100 mW. Meanwhile, the influences of the do** parameter y and pum** wavelength on the bandwidth and conversion efficiency are also discussed and optimized. It is indicated the excellent optical properties of the InP/In1-xGaxAsyP1-y waveguides and pave the way towards direct integration telecom band devices on stand semiconductor platforms.

The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) is an ESO Large Programme that has obtained multi-epoch optical spectroscopy of over 800 massive stars in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Here we introduce our scientific motivations and give an overview of the survey targets, including optical and near-infrared photometry and comprehensive details of the data reduction. One of the principal objectives was to detect massive binary systems via variations in their radial velocities, thus sha** the multi-epoch observing strategy. Spectral classifications are given for the massive emission-line stars observed by the survey, including the discovery of a new Wolf-Rayet star (VFTS 682, classified as WN5h), 2' to the northeast of R136. To illustrate the diversity of objects encompassed by the survey, we investigate the spectral properties of sixteen targets identified by Gruendl & Chu from Spitzer photometry as candidate young stellar objects or stars with notable mid-infrared excesses. Detailed spectral classification and quantitative analysis of the O- and B-type stars in the VFTS sample, paying particular attention to the effects of rotational mixing and binarity, will be presented in a series of future articles to address fundamental questions in both stellar and cluster evolution.

We present H- and Ks-band imaging of three fields at the centre of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, obtained as part of the Science Demonstration programme with the Multi-conjugate Adaptive optics Demonstrator (MAD) at the Very Large Telescope. Strehl ratios of 15-30% were achieved in the Ks-band, yielding near-infrared images of this dense and complex region at unprecedented angular resolution at these wavelengths. The MAD data are used to construct a near-infrared luminosity profile for R136, the cluster at the core of 30 Dor. Using cluster profiles of the form used by Elson et al., we find the surface brightness can be fit by a relatively shallow power-law function (gamma~1.5-1.7) over the full extent of the MAD data, which extends to a radius of ~40" (~10pc). We do not see compelling evidence for a break in the luminosity profile as seen in optical data in the literature, arguing that cluster asymmetries are the dominant source, although extinction effects and stars from nearby triggered star-formation likely also contribute. These results highlight the need to consider cluster asymmetries and multiple spatial components in interpretation of the luminosity profiles of distant unresolved clusters. We also investigate seven candidate young stellar objects reported by Gruendl & Chu from Spitzer observations, six of which have apparent counterparts in the MAD images. The most interesting of these (GC09: 053839.24-690552.3) appears related to a striking bow-shock--like feature, orientated away from both R136 and the Wolf-Rayet star Brey 75, at distances of 19.5" and 8" (4.7 and 1.9pc in projection), respectively.

We evaluate the performance of the Multi-conjugate Adaptive optics Demonstrator (MAD) from H and Ks imaging of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Maps of the full-width half maximum (FWHM) of point sources in the H and Ks images are presented, together with maps of the Strehl ratio achieved in the Ks-band observations. Each of the three natural guide stars was at the edge of the MAD field-of-view, and the observations were obtained at relatively large airmass (1.4-1.6). Even so, the Strehl ratio achieved in the second pointing (best-placed compared to the reference stars) ranged from 15% to an impressive 30%. Preliminary photometric calibration of the first pointing indicates 5 sigma sensitivities of Ks=21.75 and H=22.25 (from 22 and 12 min exposures, respectively).
