Condensation and left-orderable groups
Abstract: We discuss condensed left-orderings and develop new techniques to show that the conjugacy relation on the space of left-orderings is not smooth. These techniques apply to the solvable Baumslag Solitar groups and to Thompson's group F.

The Borel complexity of the space of left-orderings, low-dimensional topology, and dynamics
Abstract: We develop new tools to analyze the complexity of the conjugacy equivalence relation $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$, whenever $G$ is a left-orderable group. Our methods are used to demonstrate non-smoothness of $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$ for certain groups $G$ of dynamical origin, such as certain amalgams constructed from Thompson's group $F$. We also initiate a systematic analysis of $E_\mathsf{lo}(π_1(M))$, where… ▽ More

Rotation equivalence and cocycle superrigidity
Abstract: We analyze Euclidean spheres in higher dimensions and the corresponding orbit equivalence relations induced by the group of rational rotations from the viewpoint of descriptive set theory. It turns out that such equivalence relations are not treeable in dimension greater than $2$. Then we show that the rotation equivalence relation in dimension $n \geq 5$ is not Borel reducible to the one in any l… ▽ More

Anti-classification results for groups acting freely on the line
Abstract: We explore countable ordered Archimedean groups from the point of view of descriptive set theory. We introduce the space of Archimedean left-orderings $\mathrm{Ar}(G)$ for a given countable group $G$, and prove that the equivalence relation induced by the natural action of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Q})$ on $\mathrm{Ar}(\mathbb{Q}^2)$ is not concretely classifiable. Then we analyze the isomorphism rel… ▽ More

Comments: Accepted for publication in Advances in Mathematics, 38 pages. We added Subsection 5.3, which contains some strengthening of our results. In particular, Theorem 5.15 and Corollary 5.17 show that bi-embeddability on countable ordered archimedean groups is not classifiable by countable structures, and thus answer Question 5.14 from the previous version

Borel structures on the space of left-orderings
Abstract: In this paper we study the Borel structure of the space of left-orderings $\mathrm{LO}(G)$ of a group $G$ modulo the natural conjugacy action, and by using tools from descriptive set theory we find many examples of countable left-orderable groups such that the quotient space $\mathrm{LO}(G)/G$ is not standard. This answers a question of Deroin, Navas, and Rivas. We also prove that the countable Bo… ▽ More

A Policy-oriented Agent-based Model of Recruitment into Organized Crime
Abstract: Criminal organizations exploit their presence on territories and local communities to recruit new workforce in order to carry out their criminal activities and business. The ability to attract individuals is crucial for maintaining power and control over the territories in which these groups are settled. This study proposes the formalization, development and analysis of an agent-based model (ABM)… ▽ More

Simplicity of the automorphism groups of order and tournament expansions of homogeneous structures
Abstract: We define the notions of a free fusion of structures and a weakly stationary independence relation. We apply these notions to prove simplicity for the automorphism groups of order and tournament expansions of homogeneous structures like the bounded Urysohn space, the random graph, and the random poset.

Uncountable structures are not classifiable up to bi-embeddability
Abstract: Answering some of the main questions from [MR13], we show that whenever $κ$ is a cardinal satisfying $κ^{< κ} = κ> ω$, then the embeddability relation between $κ$-sized structures is strongly invariantly universal, and hence complete for ($κ$-)analytic quasi-orders. We also prove that in the above result we can further restrict our attention to various natural classes of structures, including (gen… ▽ More

Invariant universality for projective planes
Abstract: We continue the work of [1, 2, 3] by analyzing the equivalence relation of bi-embeddability on various classes of countable planes, most notably the class of countable non-Desarguesian projective planes. We use constructions of the second author to show that these equivalence relations are invariantly universal, in the sense of [3], and thus in particular complete analytic. We also introduce a new… ▽ More

Invariant universality for quandles and fields
Abstract: We show that the embeddability relations for countable quandles and for countable fields of any given characteristic other than 2 are maximally complex in a strong sense: they are invariantly universal. This notion from the theory of Borel reducibility states that any analytic quasi-order on a standard Borel space essentially appears as the restriction of the embeddability relation to an isomorphi… ▽ More

The complexity of the embeddability relation between torsion-free abelian groups of uncountable size
Abstract: We prove that for every uncountable cardinal $κ$ such that $κ^{<κ}=κ$, the quasi-order of embeddability on the $κ$-space of $κ$-sized graphs Borel reduces to the embeddability on the $κ$-space of $κ$-sized torsion-free abelian groups. Then we use the same techniques to prove that the former Borel reduces to the embeddability on the $κ$-space of $κ$-sized $R$-modules, for every $\mathbb{S}$-cotorsi… ▽ More

Universality of group embeddability
Abstract: Working in the framework of Borel reducibility, we study various notions of embeddability between groups. We prove that the embeddability between countable groups, the topological embeddability between (discrete) Polish groups, and the isometric embeddability between separable groups with a bounded bi-invariant complete metric are all invariantly universal analytic quasi-orders. This strengthens s… ▽ More
