The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) and advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) offer an opportunity for computational social science research at scale. Building upon prior explorations of LLM agent design, our work introduces a simulated agent society where complex social relationships dynamically form and evolve over time. Agents are imbued with psychological drives and placed in a sandbox survival environment. We conduct an evaluation of the agent society through the lens of Thomas Hobbes's seminal Social Contract Theory (SCT). We analyze whether, as the theory postulates, agents seek to escape a brutish "state of nature" by surrendering rights to an absolute sovereign in exchange for order and security. Our experiments unveil an alignment: Initially, agents engage in unrestrained conflict, mirroring Hobbes's depiction of the state of nature. However, as the simulation progresses, social contracts emerge, leading to the authorization of an absolute sovereign and the establishment of a peaceful commonwealth founded on mutual cooperation. This congruence between our LLM agent society's evolutionary trajectory and Hobbes's theoretical account indicates LLMs' capability to model intricate social dynamics and potentially replicate forces that shape human societies. By enabling such insights into group behavior and emergent societal phenomena, LLM-driven multi-agent simulations, while unable to simulate all the nuances of human behavior, may hold potential for advancing our understanding of social structures, group dynamics, and complex human systems.

With basis on (i) the physical principle of local causality and (ii) a certain notion of elements of reality, Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR) put forward an argument showing that physical instances may exist in which two non-commuting observables can be simultaneous elements of the physical reality. Here, by introducing an operational criterion of simultaneous reality, we show the very opposite, that is, quantum mechanics actually prevents non-commuting observables to be simultaneous elements of reality in general. In addition, we introduce a measure to quantify the extent to which the criterion is violated and explore the implications of such a measure in connection with incompatibility and correlations. Our findings suggest new manners of intepreting quantum phenomena.

Microbial contamination poses a threat to both the preservation of library and archival collections and the health of staff and users. This study investigated the microbial communities and potential health risks associated with the UNESCO-classified Norwegian Sea Trade Archive (NSTA) collection exhibiting visible microbial colonization and staff health concerns. Dust samples from book surfaces and the storage environment were analysed using culturing methods, qPCR, Next Generation Sequencing, and mycotoxin, cytotoxicity and azole resistance assays. Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., and Cladosporium sp. were the most common fungi identified, with some potentially toxic species like Stachybotrys sp., Toxicladosporium sp. and Aspergillus section Fumigati. Fungal resistance to azoles was not detected. Only one mycotoxin, sterigmatocystin, was found in a heavily contaminated book. Dust extracts from books exhibited moderate to high cytotoxicity on human lung cells, suggesting a potential respiratory risk. The collection had higher contamination levels compared to the storage environment, likely due to improved storage conditions. Even though, overall low contamination levels were obtained, which might be underestimated due to the presence of salt (from cod preservation) that could have interfered with the analyses. This study underlines the importance of monitoring microbial communities and implementing proper storage measures to safeguard cultural heritage and staff well-being.

We study sound-soft time-harmonic acoustic scattering by general scatterers, including fractal scatterers, in 2D and 3D space. For an arbitrary compact scatterer $Γ$ we reformulate the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation as a first kind integral equation (IE) on $Γ$ involving the Newton potential. The IE is well-posed, except possibly at a countable set of frequencies, and reduces to existing single-layer boundary IEs when $Γ$ is the boundary of a bounded Lipschitz open set, a screen, or a multi-screen. When $Γ$ is uniformly of $d$-dimensional Hausdorff dimension in a sense we make precise (a $d$-set), the operator in our equation is an integral operator on $Γ$ with respect to $d$-dimensional Hausdorff measure, with kernel the Helmholtz fundamental solution, and we propose a piecewise-constant Galerkin discretization of the IE, which converges in the limit of vanishing mesh width. When $Γ$ is the fractal attractor of an iterated function system of contracting similarities we prove convergence rates under assumptions on $Γ$ and the IE solution, and describe a fully discrete implementation using recently proposed quadrature rules for singular integrals on fractals. We present numerical results for a range of examples and make our software available as a Julia code.

Geographic barriers prevent migration between populations, thereby facilitating speciation through allopatry. However, these barriers can exhibit dynamic behavior in nature, promoting cycles of expansion and contraction of populations. Such oscillations cause temporal variations in migration that do not necessarily prevent speciation; on the contrary, they have been suggested as a driving force for diversification. Here we present a study on a two-island neutral speciation model in scenarios with intermittent migration driven by sea-level fluctuations. Mating is constrained to genetically compatible individuals inhabiting the same island, and offspring inherit nuclear genomes from both parents with recombination. We observe pulses of speciation that would not occur in strict isolation or continuous migration. According to the seabed height, which modulates the duration of the isolation and connection periods, the maximum richness occurs at different times and in an ephemeral fashion. The expansion-contraction dynamics can accelerate diversification, but a long time in isolation can reduce the richness to one species per island, resembling patterns described by the taxon pulse hypothesis of diversification. Together with other studies, our results support the relevance of research on the impact of variable migration on diversification, suggested to be related to regions of high diversity.

Sound-soft fractal screens can scatter acoustic waves even when they have zero surface measure. To solve such scattering problems we make what appears to be the first application of the boundary element method (BEM) where each BEM basis function is supported in a fractal set, and the integration involved in the formation of the BEM matrix is with respect to a non-integer order Hausdorff measure rather than the usual (Lebesgue) surface measure. Using recent results on function spaces on fractals, we prove convergence of the Galerkin formulation of this ``Hausdorff BEM'' for acoustic scattering in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ ($n=1,2$) when the scatterer, assumed to be a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}^n\times\{0\}$, is a $d$-set for some $d\in (n-1,n]$, so that, in particular, the scatterer has Hausdorff dimension $d$. For a class of fractals that are attractors of iterated function systems, we prove convergence rates for the Hausdorff BEM and superconvergence for smooth antilinear functionals, under certain natural regularity assumptions on the solution of the underlying boundary integral equation. We also propose numerical quadrature routines for the implementation of our Hausdorff BEM, along with a fully discrete convergence analysis, via numerical (Hausdorff measure) integration estimates and inverse estimates on fractals, estimating the discrete condition numbers. Finally, we show numerical experiments that support the sharpness of our theoretical results, and our solution regularity assumptions, including results for scattering in $\mathbb{R}^2$ by Cantor sets, and in $\mathbb{R}^3$ by Cantor dusts.

Geographic isolation is a central mechanism of speciation, but perfect isolation of populations is rare. Although speciation can be hindered if gene flow is large, intermediate levels of migration can enhance speciation by introducing genetic novelty in the semi-isolated populations or founding small communities of migrants. Here we consider a two island neutral model of speciation with continuous migration and study diversity patterns as a function of the migration probability, population size, and number of genes involved in reproductive isolation (dubbed as genome size). For small genomes, low levels of migration induce speciation on the islands that otherwise would not occur. Diversity, however, drops sharply to a single species inhabiting both islands as the migration probability increases. For large genomes, sympatric speciation occurs even when the islands are strictly isolated. Then species richness per island increases with the probability of migration, but the total number of species decreases as they become cosmopolitan. For each genome size, there is an optimal migration intensity for each population size that maximizes the number of species. We discuss the observed modes of speciation induced by migration and how they increase species richness in the insular system while promoting asymmetry between the islands and hindering endemism.

Although geographic isolation has been shown to play a key role in promoting reproductive isolation, it is now believed that speciation can also happen in sympatry and with considerable gene flow. Here we present a model of sympatric speciation based on assortative mating that does not require a genetic threshold for reproduction, i.e., that does not directly associate genetic differences between individuals with reproductive incompatibilities. In the model individuals mate with the most similar partner in their pool of potential mates, irrespective of how dissimilar it might be. We show that assortativity alone can lead to the formation of clusters of genetically similar individuals. The absence of a minimal genetic similarity for mating implies the constant generation of hybrids and brings up the old problem of species definition. Here, we define species based on clustering of genetically similar individuals but allowing genetic flow among different species. We show that the results obtained with the present model are in good agreement with empirical data, in which different species can still reproduce and generate hybrids.

In systems identification, the studied phenomena are accompanied by uncertainties, whether arising from measurement data or computational calculations. Interval data provides a valuable way to represent available information on complex problems where uncertainty, inaccuracy, or variability must be taken into account. The present work aims to determine interval parameters for a model considering data measurement uncertainties using the MQ estimator and neural networks. The main objective of this work is to apply this technique in audiometric systems, particularly in the automatic detection of auditory responses taking into consideration the flexible computing concepts that offer solutions tolerant to subjectivity, inaccuracy or uncertainty. It was possible to obtain a model with interval parameters that allow an infinite set of parameters to be evaluated as a limited range. The model was validated using two methods, one with prediction of 2 steps ahead, using the MQ estimator and extended to another representation as neural networks 5 steps delay. It has been shown that interval parameters generate interval results that contain most validation data improving system reliability.

An important political and social phenomena discussed in several countries, like India and Brazil, is the use of WhatsApp to spread false or misleading content. However, little is known about the information dissemination process in WhatsApp groups. Attention affects the dissemination of information in WhatsApp groups, determining what topics or subjects are more attractive to participants of a group. In this paper, we characterize and analyze how attention propagates among the participants of a WhatsApp group. An attention cascade begins when a user asserts a topic in a message to the group, which could include written text, photos, or links to articles online. Others then propagate the information by responding to it. We analyzed attention cascades in more than 1.7 million messages posted in 120 groups over one year. Our analysis focused on the structural and temporal evolution of attention cascades as well as on the behavior of users that participate in them. We found specific characteristics in cascades associated with groups that discuss political subjects and false information. For instance, we observe that cascades with false information tend to be deeper, reach more users, and last longer in political groups than in non-political groups.

We investigate two density questions for Sobolev, Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces on rough sets. Our main results, stated in the simplest Sobolev space setting, are that: (i) for an open set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$, $\mathcal{D}(Ω)$ is dense in $\{u\in H^s(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset \overlineΩ\}$ whenever $\partialΩ$ has zero Lebesgue measure and $Ω$ is "thick" (in the sense of Triebel); and (ii) for a $d$-set $Γ\subset\mathbb R^n$ ($0<d<n$), $\{u\in H^{s_1}(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset Γ\}$ is dense in $\{u\in H^{s_2}(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset Γ\}$ whenever $-\frac{n-d}{2}-m-1<s_{2}\leq s_{1}<-\frac{n-d}{2}-m$ for some $m\in\mathbb N_0$. For (ii), we provide concrete examples, for any $m\in\mathbb N_0$, where density fails when $s_1$ and $s_2$ are on opposite sides of $-\frac{n-d}{2}-m$. The results (i) and (ii) are related in a number of ways, including via their connection to the question of whether $\{u\in H^s(\mathbb R^n):{\rm supp}\, u\subset Γ\}=\{0\}$ for a given closed set $Γ\subset\mathbb R^n$ and $s\in \mathbb R$. They also both arise naturally in the study of boundary integral equation formulations of acoustic wave scattering by fractal screens. We additionally provide analogous results in the more general setting of Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces.

We present a thorough characterization of what we believe to be the first significant analysis of the behavior of groups in WhatsApp in the scientific literature. Our characterization of over 270,000 messages and about 7,000 users spanning a 28-day period is done at three different layers. The message layer focuses on individual messages, each of which is the result of specific posts performed by a user. The user layer characterizes the user actions while interacting with a group. The group layer characterizes the aggregate message patterns of all users that participate in a group. We analyze 81 public groups in WhatsApp and classify them into two categories, political and non-political groups according to keywords associated with each group. Our contributions are two-fold. First, we introduce a framework and a number of metrics to characterize the behavior of communication groups in mobile messaging systems such as WhatsApp. Second, our analysis underscores a Zipf-like profile for user messages in political groups. Also, our analysis reveals that Whatsapp messages are multimedia, with a combination of different forms of content. Multimedia content (i.e., audio, image, and video) and emojis are present in 20% and 11.2% of all messages respectively. Political groups use more text messages than non-political groups. Second, we characterize novel features that represent the behavior of a public group, with multiple conversational turns between key members, with the participation of other members of the group.

We study the existence of traces of Besov spaces on fractal $h$-sets $Γ$ with the special focus laid on necessary assumptions implying this existence, or, in other words, present criteria for the non-existence of traces. In that sense our paper can be regarded as an extension of [Br4] and a continuation of the recent paper [Ca2]. Closely connected with the problem of existence of traces is the notion of dichotomy in function spaces: We can prove that -- depending on the function space and the set $Γ$ -- there occurs an alternative: either the trace on $Γ$ exists, or smooth functions compactly supported outside $Γ$ are dense in the space. This notion was introduced by Triebel in [Tr7] for the special case of $d$-sets.

Compactness in quasi-Banach function spaces and applications to compact embeddings of Besov-type spaces
Authors:
António Caetano,

Bohumír Opic
Abstract:
There are two main aims of the paper. The first one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in Banach function spaces to the setting of quasi-Banach function spaces. The second one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in the Lebesgue spaces $L_p(\mathbb R^n)$, $1 \leq p < \infty$, to the so-called power quasi-Banach function spaces. These criteria are applied…

These criteria are applied to establish compact embeddings of abstract Besov spaces into quasi-Banach function spaces. The results are illustrated on embeddings of Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb R^n)$, $0<s<1$, $0<p,q\leq \infty$, into Lorentz-type spaces.

On generalized Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of regular distributions
Authors:
António Caetano,

Abstract:
We establish conditions on the parameters which are both necessary and sufficient in order that Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of generalized smoothness contain only regular distributions. We also connect this with the possibility of embedding such spaces in some particular Lebesgue spaces.

On the Hausdorff dimension of continuous functions belonging to Hölder and Besov spaces on fractal d-sets
Authors:
António Caetano,
Abel Carvalho
Abstract:
The Hausdorff dimension of the graphs of the functions in Hölder and Besov spaces (in this case with integrability p \geq 1) on fractal d-sets is studied. Denoting by s \in (0,1] the smoothness parameter, the sharp upper bound min{d+1-s,d/s} is obtained. In particular, when passing from d \geq s to d<s there is a change of behaviour from d+1-s to d/s which implies that even highly nonsmooth functi…

Double chains with base pairing: delocalization irrespective to DNA sequencing
Authors:

Abstract:
The question of whether DNA is intrinsically conducting or not is still a challenge. The ongoing debate on DNA molecules as an electronic material has so far underestimated a key distinction of the system: the role of base pairing (inter chain correlation) in opposition to correlations along each chain. The question of whether DNA is intrinsically conducting or not is still a challenge. The ongoing debate on DNA molecules as an electronic material has so far underestimated a key distinction of the system: the role of base pairing (inter chain correlation) in opposition to correlations along each chain. In the present work we show that a disordered double-chain presents truly delocalized states. This effect is irrespective to the sequencing along each chain: DNA-like base pairing reveals to be an efficient delocalization mechanism.
