Recently, Sharma et al. [Adv. Sci. 9, 2203473 (2022)] claimed that thin films (around 20 nm) of UO2 deposited on perovskite substrates exhibit strongly enhanced paramagnetism (called induced ferromagnetism by the authors). Moments of up to 3 Bohr magneton/U atom were claimed in magnetic fields of 6 T. We have reproduced such films and, after characterisation, have examined them with X-ray circular magnetic dichroism (XMCD) at the uranium M edges, a technique that is element specific. We do not confirm the published results. We find a small increase, as compared to the bulk, in the magnetic susceptibility of UO2 in such films, but the magnetisation versus field curves, measured by XMCD, are linear with field and there is no indication of any ferromagnetism. The absence of any anomaly around 30 K (the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of bulk UO2) in the XMCD signal suggests the films do not order magnetically.

Frustrated antiferromagnets offer a captivating platform to study the intricate relationship of magnetic interactions, geometric constraints, and emergent phenomena. By controlling spin orientations, these materials can be tailored for applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. The research focuses on the interplay of magnetic and exchange anisotropy effects in artificial heterostructures based on a canonical frustrated antiferromagnet, UO2. The potential to manipulate the spin directions in this material and switch between distinct antiferromagnetic states is investigated using substrate-induced strain. The phenomenon is probed using exchange bias (EB) effects in stoichiometric UO2/Fe3O4 bilayers. By employing many-body first-principles calculations magnetic configurations in the UO2 layers are identified. Even a minor tetragonal distortion triggers a transition between antiferromagnetic states of different symmetries, driven by a robust alteration of single-ion anisotropy due to the distortion. Consequently, this change influences the arrangement of magnetic moments at the UO2/Fe3O4 interface, affecting the magnitude of exchange bias. The findings showcase how epitaxial strain can effectively manipulate the antiferromagnetic states in frustrated antiferromagnets by controlling single-site anisotropy.

Research on actinide materials, both basic and applied, has been greatly advanced by the general techniques available from high-intensity photon beams from x-ray synchrotron sources. The most important single reason is that such x-ray sources can work with minute (e.g., microgram) samples, and at this level, the radioactive hazards of actinides are much reduced. We start by discussing the form and encapsulation procedures used for different techniques, then discuss the basic theory for interpreting the results. By reviewing a selection of x-ray diffraction (XRD), resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), resonant and non-resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS, NIXS), dispersive inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and conventional and resonant photoemission experiments, we demonstrate the potential of synchrotron radiation techniques in studying lattice and electronic structure, hybridization effects, multipolar order, and lattice dynamics in actinide materials.

D. J. Antonio et al. report an x-ray diffraction experiment on uranium dioxide at high-magnetic field and low temperature. The authors have apparently not realized that the diffraction data actually shows unambiguously the presence of a rhombohedral distortion induced by the field at low temperature and the presence of more than one domain. Our note correctly analyses their data. The crystallographic analysis we perform is based on simple arguments with respect to plane spacings in slightly distorted cubic materials. Similar studies have been reported in many materials over the last 50 years. Our analysis explains quantitatively the observations, the presence of the two peaks (the appearance of which the authors regard as unexpected) and their different variations with respect to the applied field, which is a simple consequence of the conservation of atomic volume.

NpPdSn orders antiferromagnetically below the Néel temperature $T_N$ = 19 K and shows localized magnetism of Np$^{3+}$ ion with a a doubly degenerate ground state. In the magnetic state the electrical resistivity and heat capacity are characterized by electron-magnon scattering with spin-waves spectrum typical of anisotropic antiferromagnets. An enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient and typical behavior of magnetorestistivity, Seebeck and Hall coefficients are all characteristic of systems with strong electronic correlations. The low temperature antiferromagnetic state of NpPdSn is verified by neutron diffraction and $^{237}$Np Mössbauer spectroscopy and possible magnetic structures are discussed.

The experiment probes the vortex phase below $T_{c}$ and shows that an external magnetic field induces a Pu 5$f$ magnetic moment at 2 K equal to the temperature-independent moment measured in the normal phase up to 300 K by a SQUID device. This observation is in agreement with theoretical models claiming that the Pu atoms in PuCoGa$_{5}$ have a nonmagnetic singlet ground state resulting from the hybridization of the conduction electrons with the intermediate-valence 5$f$ electronic shell. Unexpectedly, XMCD spectra show that the orbital component of the $5f$ magnetic moment increases significantly between 30 and 2 K; the antiparallel spin component increases as well, leaving the total moment practically constant. We suggest that this indicates a low-temperature breakdown of the complete Kondo-like screening of the local 5$f$ moment.

The technique is especially sensitive to any oxidation of the surface, and this was found on the USb sample, thus preventing a good comparison with a material known to be $5f^3$. We have found a small energy shift between UO$_2$ and UPd$_3$, both known to have localized $5f^2$ configurations, which we ascribe to the effect of conduction electrons in UPd$_3$. The spectra from UPd$_3$ and URu$_2$Si$_2$,are similar, strongly suggesting a predominant $5f^2$ configuration for URu$_2$Si$_2$. The valence-band resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) provides information on the U $P_3$ transitions (at about $18$~eV) between the U $5f$ and U $6p$ states, as well as transitions of between $3$ and $7$~eV from the valence band into the unoccupied $5f$ states. These transitions are primarily involving mixed ligand states (O $2p$ or Pd, Ru $4d$) and U $5f$ states. Calculations are able to reproduce both these low-energy transitions reasonably well.

We have performed high-resolution powder x-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of $^{242}$PuCoGa$_{5}$, the heavy-fermion superconductor with the highest critical temperature $T_{c}$ = 18.7 K. The results show that the tetragonal symmetry of its crystallographic lattice is preserved down to 2 K. Marginal evidence is obtained for an anomalous behaviour below $T_{c}$ of the $a$ and $c$ lattice parameters. The observed thermal expansion is isotropic down to 150 K, and becomes anisotropic for lower temperatures. This gives a $c/a$ ratio that decreases with increasing temperature to become almost constant above $\sim$150 K. The volume thermal expansion coefficient $α_{V}$ has a jump at $T_{c}$, a factor $\sim$20 larger than the change predicted by the Ehrenfest relation for a second order phase transition. The volume expansion deviates from the curve expected for the conventional anharmonic behaviour described by a simple Grüneisen-Einstein model. The observed differences are about ten times larger than the statistical error bars but are too small to be taken as an indication for the proximity of the system to a valence instability that is avoided by the superconducting state.

Crystal structure studies were performed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement method. All studied compounds crystallize in the CeCr$_{2}$Al$_{20}$-type structure (space group Fd-3m, no. 227) with the actinide or Ce atom located in the oversized cage formed by Al atoms. Comparison of the crystallographic results with the reported data for LnV$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ (Ln = lanthanoids) counterparts reveals distinctly different behavior of the lanthanide- and actinide-bearing compounds. This difference is suggested to be caused by fairly localized character of the 4f electrons, whereas itinerant character of the 5f electrons is likely seen for U- and Np-containing phases. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements did not reveal any magnetic ordering in U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ and Pu$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ down to 2.5 K. A small anomaly in low-temperature specific heat of Ce$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, and Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ is observed, likely arising from a low-energy Einstein mode.

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the lattice dynamics and thermal properties of the actinide dioxide NpO$_2$. The energy-wavevector dispersion relation for normal modes of vibration propagating along the $[001]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ high-symmetry lines in NpO$_2$ at room temperature has been determined by measuring the coherent one-phonon scattering of X-rays from a $\sim$1.2 mg single-crystal specimen, the largest available single crystal for this compound. The results are compared against ab initio phonon dispersions computed within the first-principles density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard $U$ correlation (GGA+$U$) approach, taking into account third-order anharmonicity effects in the quasiharmonic approximation. Good agreement with the experiment is obtained for calculations with an on-site Coulomb parameter $U = 4$ eV and Hund's exchange $J= 0.6$ eV in line with previous electronic structure calculations. We further compute the thermal expansion, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, phonon linewidth, and thermal phonon softening, and compare with available experiments. The theoretical and measured heat capacities are in close agreement with another. About 27% of the calculated thermal conductivity is due to phonons with energy higher than 25 meV ($\sim$ 6 THz ), suggesting an important role of high-energy optical phonons in the heat transport. The simulated thermal expansion reproduces well the experimental data up to about 1000 K, indicating a failure of the quasiharmonic approximation above this limit.

X-ray powder diffraction refinements indicate an enhanced c/a ratio in these two compounds but the magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large reduction of the critical temperature Tc compared to PuCoGa5. DFT+ED calculations indicate significant changes in the Fermi surface, probably related to the decrease of Tc, in these compounds. Using the technique of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we show that this is the case in AmFe$_2$. Since $\langle J_z \rangle$ = 0, the spin component is exactly twice as large as the orbital one, the total Am moment is opposite to that of Fe, and the magnetic dipole operator $\langle T_{z} \rangle$ can be determined directly; we discuss the progression of the latter across the actinide series.

The apparent coexistence of ordered and disordered phases observed in the Mössbauer spectra is explained in terms of slow relaxation between the components of a quasi-triplet ground state. The ratio between the expectation value of the magnetic dipole operator and the spin magnetic moment ($3\langle T_{z}\rangle/ \langle S_{z}\rangle$ = +1.43) is positive and large, suggesting a localized character of the 5$f$ electrons. The angular part of the spin-orbit coupling ($\langle\vec{\ell}\cdot\vec{s}\rangle$ = -5.55) is close to the value of -6.25 calculated for trivalent Np ions in intermediate coupling approximation. The results are discussed against the prediction of first-principle electronic structure calculations based on the spin-polarized local spin density approximation plus Hubbard interaction, and of a mean field model taking into account crystal field and exchange interactions.

NpCoGe, the neptunium analogue of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, has been investigated by dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, 237Np Moessbauer spectroscopy and LSDA calculations. NpCoGe exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state with a Neel temperature TN = 13 K and an average ordered magnetic moment <mNp> = 0.80 mB. The magnetic phase diagram has been determined and shows that the antiferromagnetic structure is destroyed by the application of a magnetic field (around 3 T). The value of the isomer shift suggests a Np3+ charge state (configuration 5f4). A high Sommerfeld coefficient value for NpCoGe (170 mJ mol-1K-2) is inferred from specific heat. LSDA calculations indicate strong magnetic anisotropy and easy magnetization along the c-axis. Moessbauer data and calculated exchange interactions support the possible occurrence of an elliptical spin spiral structure in NpCoGe. The comparison with NpRhGe and uranium analogues suggests the leading role of 5f-d hybridization, the rather delocalized character of 5f electrons in NpCoGe and the possible proximity of NpRuGe or NpFeGe to a magnetic quantum critical point.

The correlated band theory implemented as a combination of the local density approximation with the exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model is applied to PuO$_2$. We obtain an insulating electronic structure consistent with the experimental photoemission spectra. The calculations yield the band gap of 1.8 eV and a non-magnetic singlet ground state that is characterized by a non-integer filling of the plutonium $f$ shell ($n_f\approx 4.5$). Due to sizeable hybridization of the $f$ shell with the $p$ states of oxygen, the ground state is more complex than the four-electron Russell--Saunders ${}^5{\rm I}_4$ manifold split by the crystal field. The inclusion of hybridization improves the agreement between the theory and experiment for the magnetic susceptibility.

By comparing neutron scattering intensities in different polarization channels and at equivalent points in different Brillouin zones, we show the mixed magneto-vibrational-quadrupolar character of the observed excitations. The high energy resolution afforded by the cold triple-axis spectrometer allowed us to study in detail the magnon-phonon interaction giving rise to avoided crossings along the $[00ξ]$ reciprocal space direction.

The XMCD experiments performed at the M4,5 absorption edges of Np and Pu allow us to determine the spectroscopic branching ratio, which gives information on the coupling scheme in these materials. In all materials the intermediate coupling scheme is found appropriate. Comparison with the SQUID data for NpOs2 and PuFe2 allows a determination of the individual orbital and spin magnetic moments and the magnetic dipole contribution mmd. The resulting orbital and spin magnetic moments are in good agreement with earlier values determined by neutron diffraction, and the values of mmd are non-negligible, and close to those predicted for intermediate coupling. There is a comparatively large induced moment on the Os atom in NpOs2 such that the Os contribution to the total moment per formula unit is ~30% of the total. The spin and orbital moments at the Os site are parallel, in contrast to the anti-parallel configuration of Os impurities in 3d ferromagnetic transition metals. Calculations using the LDA+U technique are reported. The ab initio computed XMCD spectra show good agreement with experimental spectra for small values (0-1eV) of the Hubbard U parameter, which underpins that 5f electrons in these compounds are relatively delocalized.

The spin waves in the multi-k antiferromagnet, USb, soften and become quasielastic well below the AFM ordering temperature, T_N. This occurs without a magnetic or structural transition. It has been suggested that this change is in fact due to de-phasing of the different multi-k components: a switch from 3-k to 1-k behaviour. In this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with tri-directional polarisation analysis to probe the quasielastic magnetic excitations and reveal that the 3-k structure does not de-phase. More surprisingly, the paramagnetic correlations also maintain the same clear phase correlations well above T_N (up to at least 1.4T_N). This precursor regime has not been observed before in a multi-k system.

The 5f-local magnetic moment is compensated by a moment formed in the surrounding cloud of conduction electrons. For PuCoGa_5 and δ-Pu the compensation is complete and the Anderson impurity ground state is a singlet. For PuCoIn_5 the compensation is partial and the Pu ground state is magnetic. We suggest that the unconventional d-wave superconductivity is likely mediated by the 5f-states antiferromagnetic fluctuations in PuCoIn_5, and by valence fluctuations in PuCoGa_5.

Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest the occurrence of an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=50 K. No further anomalies have been observed down to 2 K, the minimum temperature that we have been able to achieve. A neptunium analogue of the LaFeAsO tetragonal layered compound has been synthesized and characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The occurrence of long-range magnetic order below a critical temperature T_N = 57 K is suggested by anomalies in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat curves. Below T_N, powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic structure of the Np sublattice, with an ordered magnetic moment of 1.70(0.07) μ_B aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. No magnetic order has been observed on the Fe sublattice, setting an upper limit of about 0.3 μ_B for the ordered magnetic moment on the iron. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements exclude the occurrence of lattice transformations down to 5 K, in sharp contrast to the observation of a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic distortion in the rare-earth analogues, which has been associated with the stabilization of a spin density wave on the iron sublattice. Instead, a significant expansion of the NpFeAsO lattice parameters is observed with decreasing temperature below T_N, corresponding to a relative volume change of about 0.2% and to an invar behavior between 5 and 20 K. First-principle electronic structure calculations based on the local-spin density plus Coulomb interaction and the local density plus Hubbard-I approximations provide results in good agreement with the experimental findings.

A century on from its discovery, a complete fundamental understanding of superconductivity is still missing. Considerable research efforts are currently devoted to elucidating mechanisms by which pairs of electrons can bind together through the mediation of a boson field different than the one associated to the vibrations of a crystal lattice. PuCoGa_5, a 5f-electron heavy-fermion superconductor with a record critical temperature T_c=18.5 K, is one of the many compounds for which the short-range, isotropic attraction provided by simple electron-phonon coupling does not appear as an adequate glue for electron pairing. Here, we report the results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in single crystals of PuCoGa_5. Andreev reflection structures are clearly observed in the low-temperature spectra, and unambiguously prove that the paired superconducting electrons have wavefunction with the d-wave symmetry of a four-leaf clover. A straightforward analysis of the spectra provide the amplitude of the gap and its temperature dependence, Δ(T). We obtain Δ(T -> 0) = 5.1 \pm 0.3 meV and a gap ratio, 2Δ/k_B T_c = 6.5 \pm 0.3, indicating that the compound is in the regime of strong electron-boson coupling. The gap value and its temperature dependence can be well reproduced within the Eliashberg theory for superconductivity if the spectral function of the mediating bosons has a spin-fluctuations-like shape, with a peak energy of 6.5 meV. Electronic structure calculations, combining the local density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model, provide a hint about the possible origin of the fluctuations.

Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide materials.

We report a resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) study of antiferromagnetic neptunium compounds NpCoGa_5 and NpRhGa_5 at the Np M_4 and Ga K-edges. Large resonant signals of magnetic dipole character are observed below the Neel temperatures at both edges. The signals at the Np edges confirm the behaviour determined previously from neutron diffraction, i.e. the moments along [001] in NpCoGa_{5} and in NpRhGa_5 a reorientation of the moments from the c-axis direction to the ab plane. In the latter material, on application of magnetic field of 9 Tesla along the [010] direction we observe a change in the population of different [110]-type domains. We observe also a magnetic dipole signal at the Ga K-edge, similarly to the reported UGa_3 case, that can be interpreted within a semi-localized model as an orbital polarization of the Ga 4p states induced via strong hybridization with the Np 5f valence band. Quantitative analysis of the signal shows that the Ga dipole on the two different Ga sites follows closely the Np magnetic moment reorientation in NpRhGa_5. The ratios of the signals on the two inequivalent Ga sites are not the same for the different compounds.

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on NpCoGa$_{5}$, an isostructural analogue of the PuCoGa$_{5}$ superconductor. Two energy scales characterize the magnetic response in the antiferromagnetic phase. One is related to a non-dispersive excitation between two crystal field levels. The other at lower energies corresponds to dispersive fluctuations emanating from the magnetic zone center. The fluctuations persist in the paramagnetic phase also, although weaker in intensity. This supports the possibility that magnetic fluctuations are present in PuCoGa$_{5}$, where unconventional d-wave superconductivity is achieved in the absence of magnetic order.

Resonant x-ray scattering experiments at the uranium $M_{4}$ absorption edge show a characteristic dependence in the integrated intensity upon rotation of the crystal around the scattering vector. Although quadrupolar order in uranium dioxide was advocated already in the 1960s no experimental evidence for this phenomenon was provided until now. We conclude with a possible model to explain the phase diagram of the solid solutions of UO$_{2}$ and NpO$_{2}$. We suggest that in the region $0.30 < x < 0.75$ neither the transverse nor the longitudinal quadrupole ordering can dominate, leading to frustration and only short-range ordering.

Energy and intensity measurements for several intra-multiplet and inter-multiplet magnetic excitations allow us to determine the spin wavefunctions of the investigated clusters. Effects due to the mixing of different spin multiplets have been considered. Such effects proved to be important to correctly reproduce the energy and intensity of magnetic excitations in the neutron spectra. On the contrary to what is observed for the parent homonuclear Cr8 ring, the symmetry of the first excited spin states is such that anticrossing conditions with the ground state can be realized in the presence of an external magnetic field. Heterometallic Cr7M wheels are therefore good candidates for macroscopic observations of quantum effects.

We have used element specific X-ray resonant scattering to investigate the M edge resonances in a single crystal of \unpo. Earlier neutron diffraction and Mössbauer studies had shown the presence of long-range AF order below T$_{N}$ = 19 K, with sizeable magnetic moment both on the U and the Np ions. RXS results confirm the presence of an ordered dipole magnetic moment on the Np ions, but also reveal the presence of an anti-ferro arrangement of the electric quadrupole moments on both U and Np ions, with the same propagation vector that defines the magnetic structure. From the azimuthal dependence of the intensities we are able to determine the exact configuration of the quadrupolar ordering. The intensities of Bragg peaks associated with magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole order have different temperature dependences. On cooling below T$_{N}$, the magnetic dipole order develops faster on the uranium ions, with magnetic order on the Np ions increasing at a lower rate. At the same temperature, quadrupolar order on both the U and Np ions occurs along with an internal Jahn-Teller lattice distortion.

Magnetic anisotropy has been measured for the ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 perovskite from an analysis of the high-field part of the magnetization vs. field curves, i.e., the magnetic saturation regime. These measurements give a magnetic anistropy one order of magnitude higher than that of reference manganites. Surprisingly, the values of the magnetic anisotropy calculated in this way do not coincide with those estimated from measurements of coercive fields which are one order of magnitude smaller. It is proposed that the reason of this anomalous behaviour is a transition of the trivalent Co ions under the external magnetic field from a low-spin to an intermediate-spin state. Such a transition converts the Co3+ ions into Jahn-Teller ions having an only partially quenched orbital angular momentum, which enhances the intra-atomic spin-orbit coupling and magnetic anisotropy.

Below T_0 = 25 K, the development of long-range order of Np electric quadrupoles is revealed by the growth of superlattice Bragg peaks. The electronic transition is not accompanied by any measurable crystallographic distortion, either internal or external, so the symmetry of the system remains cubic. The polarization and azimuthal dependence of the intensity of the resonant peaks is well reproduced assuming Templeton scattering from a triple-q longitudinal antiferroquadrupolar structure. Electric quadrupole order in NpO_2 could be driven by the ordering at T_0 of magnetic octupoles of Gamma_5 symmetry, splitting the Np ground state quartet and leading to a singlet ground state with zero dipole magnetic moment.

The anelastic spectrum of calix[4]arene was measured at two different vibrational frequencies. Three thermally activated peaks were detected. The lowest temperature peak can be described considering a continous distribution function of activation energies for the relaxation. This anelastic peak can be ascribed to a thermally activated hop** process of H atoms of the OH groups, corresponding to a flip-flop of the OH bond. From the results of the present study, it seems that anelastic spectroscopy is a good experimental technique to study atomic motion inside molecules at a mesoscopic (few molecules) level.

MnAs exhibits a first-order phase transition from a ferromagnetic, high-spin metal NiAs-type hexagonal phase to a paramagnetic, lower-spin insulator MnP-type orthorhombic phase at T_C = 313 K. Here, we report the results of neutron diffraction experiments showing that an external magnetic field, B, stabilizes the hexagonal metallic phase above T_C. The phase transformation is reversible and constitutes the first demonstration of a bond-breaking transition induced by a magnetic field. At 322 K the hexagonal structure is restored for B > 4 tesla. The field-induced phase transition is accompanied by an enhanced magnetoresistance of about 17 % at 310 K. We discuss the origin of this phenomenon, which appears to be similar to that of the colossal magnetoresistance response observed in some members of the manganese perovskite family.
