This letter presents a 360° phase detector cell for performing phase-shift measurements on multiple output systems. An analog phase detector, capable of detecting a maximum range of {\pm}90°, has been used to perform a double multiplication of two signals, both in-phase and phase-shifted. The proposed solution broadens the frequency range beyond other solutions that require to fulfill the quadrature condition. Subsequently, the possibility of reaching the theoretical limit of phase shift within a hybrid coupler (Φ < 90° {\pm} 90°) is discussed by using four straight-line equations to characterize the phase detector response. The proposed solution allows to extend up to 360° the phase detection range and provide an increased immunity with respect to both impedance mismatching and phase deviations within the hybrid coupler. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design, a phase detector cell prototype has been implemented using a commercial hybrid coupler with a phase shift of 92.5° {\pm} 0.5° at 3.1-5.9 GHz, an external switch and a microcontroller with 2 kB of memory. Measurements show a range of detection of 360° ({\pm}180°) across the tested frequency band of 2.7-6 GHz.

Background: Artificial intelligence techniques have demonstrated great potential in cardiology, especially to detect imperceptible patterns for the human eye. In this sense, these techniques seem to be adequate to identify patterns in the myocardial texture which could lead to characterize and quantify fibrosis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to postulate a new artificial intelligence method to identify fibrosis in cine cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out in a population of 75 subjects from a clinical center of San Carlos de Bariloche. The proposed method analyzes the myocardial texture in cine CMR images using a convolutional neural network to determine local myocardial tissue damage. Results: An accuracy of 89% for quantifying local tissue damage was observed for the validation data set and 70% for the test set. In addition, the qualitative analysis showed a high spatial correlation in lesion location. Conclusions: The postulated method enables to spatially identify fibrosis using only the information from cine nuclear magnetic resonance studies, demonstrating the potential of this technique to quantify myocardial viability in the future or to study the lesions etiology

The precise description of the motion of anisotropic particles in a flow rests on the understanding of the force and torque acting on them. Here, we study experimentally small, very elongated particles settling in a fluid at small Reynolds number. In our experiments, we can, to a very good approximation, relate the rate of rotation of cylindrical tungsten rods, of aspect ratios β= 8 and β= 16, settling in pure glycerol to the torque they are experiencing. This allows us to compare the measured torque with expressions obtained either in the slender-rod limit, or in the case of spheroids. Both theories predict a simple angle dependence for the torque, which is found to capture very well the experimental results. Surprisingly, the slender-rod approximation predicts much better the results for β= 8, than for β= 16. In the latter case, the expression obtained for a spheroid provides a better approximation. The translational dynamics is shown to be in qualitative agreement with the slender-rod and spheroid models, the former one being found to represent better the experimental data.

The design and application of an instrumented particle for the lagrangian characterization of turbulent free surface flows is presented in this study. This instrumented particle constitutes a local measurement device capable of measuring both its instantaneous 3D translational acceleration and angular velocity components, as well as recording them on an embarked removeable memory card. A lithium ion polymer battery provides the instrumented particle with up to 8 hours of autonomous operation. Entirely composed of commercial off the shelf electronic components, it features accelerometer and gyroscope sensors with a resolution of 16 bits for each individual axis, and maximum data acquisition rates of 1 and 8 kHz, respectively, as well as several user programmable dynamic ranges. Its ABS 3D printed body takes the form of a 36 mm diameter hollow sphere, and has a total mass of (19.6 $\pm$ 0.5) g. Controlled experiments, carried out to calibrate and validate its performance showed good agreement when compared to reference techniques. In order to assess the practicality of the instrumented particle, we apply it to the statistical characterization of floater dynamics in experiments of surface wave turbulence. In this feasibility study, we focused our attention on the distribution of acceleration and angular velocity fluctuations as a function of the forcing intensity. The IP's motion is also simultaneously registered by a 3D particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) system, for the purposes of comparison. Beyond the results particular to this study case, it constitutes a proof of both the feasibility and potentiality of the IP as a tool for the experimental characterization of particle dynamics in such flows.

In recent years, there has been an upswing of interest in estimating information from data emerging in a lot of areas beyond communications. This paper aims at estimating the information between two random phenomena by using consolidated second-order statistics tools. The squared-loss mutual information is chosen for that purpose as a natural surrogate of Shannon mutual information. The rationale for doing so is developed for i.i.d. discrete sources -map** data onto the simplex space-, and for analog sources -map** data onto the characteristic space-, highlighting the links with other well-known related concepts in the literature based on local approximations of information-theoretic measures. The proposed approach gains in interpretability and scalability for its use on large datasets, providing physical interpretation to the free regularization parameters. Moreover, the structure of the proposed map** allows resorting to Szegö's theorem to reduce the complexity for high dimensional map**s, exhibiting strong dualities with spectral analysis. The performance of the proposed estimators is analyzed using Gaussian mixtures.

Several segmentation levels can be obtained using Multi-Level Starlet Segmentation; after that, Matthews correlation coefficient (MCC) is used to choose an optimal segmentation level, giving rise to Multi-Level Starlet Optimal Segmentation. In this paper, MLSOS is employed to estimate the concentration of gold nanoparticles with diameter around 47 nm, reducted on natural rubber membranes. These samples were used on the construction of SERS/SERRS substrates and in the study of natural rubber membranes with incorporated gold nanoparticles influence on Leishmania braziliensis physiology. Multi-Level Starlet Segmentation (MLSS) and Multi-Level Starlet Optimal Segmentation (MLSOS) were developed to address the photomicrograph segmentation deficiency on general tools. These methods gave rise to Jansen-MIDAS, an open-source software which a scientist can use to obtain a multi-level threshold segmentation of his/hers photomicrographs. New medical procedures promise continuous patient monitoring and drug delivery through implanted sensors and actuators. When over the air wireless radio frequency (OTA-RF) links are used for intra-body implant communication, the network incurs heavy energy costs owing to absorption within the human tissue. With this motivation, we explore an alternate form of intra-body communication that relies on weak electrical signals, instead of OTA-RF. To demonstrate the feasibility of this new paradigm for enabling communication between sensors and actuators embedded within the tissue, or placed on the surface of the skin, we develop a rigorous analytical model based on galvanic coupling of low energy signals. The main contributions in this paper are: (i) develo** a suite of analytical expressions for modeling the resulting communication channel for weak electrical signals in a three dimensional multi-layered tissue structure, (ii) validating and verifying the model through extensive finite element simulations, published measurements in existing literature, and experiments conducted with porcine tissue, (iii) designing the communication framework with safety considerations, and analyzing the influence of different network and hardware parameters such as transmission frequency and electrode placements. Our results reveal a close agreement between theory, simulation, literature and experimental findings, pointing to the suitability of the model for quick and accurate channel characterization and parameter estimation for networked and implanted sensors.

Among other results, he proved that a strict and complete nearly Kähler manifold is locally a Riemannian product of homogeneous nearly Kähler spaces, twistor spaces over quaternionic K{ähler manifolds and six-dimensional nearly Kähler manifolds, where the homogeneous nearly Kähler factors are also 3-symmetric spaces. In the present paper, using the lists of $3$-symmetric spaces given by Wolf & Gray, we display the exhaustive list of irreducible simply connected homogeneous strict nearly Kähler manifolds. For such manifolds, we give details relative to the intrinsic torsion and the Riemannian curvature. Additionally, we determine the canonical fibration for those with special algebraic torsion.

We present a Bayesian Voronoi image reconstruction technique (VIR) for interferometric data. Bayesian analysis applied to the inverse problem allows us to derive the a-posteriori probability of a novel parameterization of interferometric images. We use a variable Voronoi diagram as our model in place of the usual fixed pixel grid. A quantization of the intensity field allows us to calculate the likelihood function and a-priori probabilities. The Voronoi image is optimized including the number of polygons as free parameters. We apply our algorithm to deconvolve simulated interferometric data. Residuals, restored images and chi^2 values are used to compare our reconstructions with fixed grid models. VIR has the advantage of modeling the image with few parameters, obtaining a better image from a Bayesian point of view.

In the case of the Cu-doped samples, the magnetic cycles are almost independent of the Cu concentration. Cu atoms are forming CuO and/or substituting Ti in TiO2. The thermal treatment in air promotes the CuO segregation. Since CuO is antiferromagnetic, the magnetic signals present in the films could be assigned to this Cu substitutionally replacing cations in TiO2.

In this work we present an X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy characterization of the local environment of the impurity in room temperature ferromagnetic anatase TiO2 thin films doped with Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn, deposited on LaAlO3 substrate by Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was found that there is a considerable amount of impurity atoms substituting Ti in TiO2 anatase, although the presence of metal transition monoxide clusters can not be discarded. From our results we infer that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism of the samples could be assigned to the metal transition atoms replacing Ti in TiO2 anatase.

Abstract:
Local SU(3)-structures on an oriented submanifold of Spin(7)-manifold are determined and their types are characterized in terms of the shape operator and the type of the Spin(7)-structure. An application to Bryant \cite{MR89b:53084} and Calabi \cite{MR24 #A558} examples is given. An application to Bryant \cite{MR89b:53084} and Calabi \cite{MR24 #A558} examples is given. It is shown that the product of a Cayley plane and a minimal surface lying in a four-dimensional orthogonal Cayley plane with the induced complex structure from the octonions described by Bryant in \cite{MR89b:53084} admits a holomorphic local complex volume form exactly when it lies in a three-plane, i.e. it coincides with the example constructed by Calabi in \cite{MR24 #A558}. In this case the holomorphic (3,0)-form is parallel with respect to the unique Hermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion.

In recent years there has been an intense search for room temperature ferromagnetism in doped dilute semiconductors, which have many potentially applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. We report here the unexpected observation of significant room temperature ferromagnetism in a semiconductor doped with nonmagnetic impurities, Cu-doped TiO$_2$ thin films grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition. The magnetic moment, calculated from the magnetization curves, resulted surprisingly large, about 1.5 $μ_B$ per Cu atom. A large magnetic moment was also obtained from ab initio calculations using the supercell method for TiO$_2$ with Cu impurities, but only if an oxygen vacancy in the nearest-neighbour shell of Cu was present. This result suggests that the role of oxygen vacancies is crucial for the appearance of ferromagnetism. The calculations also predict that Cu do** favours the formation of oxygen vacancies.

By deriving different forumlae for the skew-symmetric part of the star-Ricci curvature, we find that some of these contributions are dependent on the approach used, and for the almost Hermitian case we obtain tables that differ from those of Falcitelli, Farinola and Salamon. We show how the exterior algebra may used to explain some of these variations.

Special almost Hermitian geometry

Abstract:
We study the classification of special almost hermitian manifolds in Gray and Hervella's type classes. We prove that the exterior derivatives of the symplectic form and the complex volume form contain all the information about the intrinsic torsion of the $\SUn(n)$-structure. Furthermore, we apply the obtained results to almost hyperhermitian geometry. Thus, we show that the exterior derivatives…

We prove that the exterior derivatives of the symplectic form and the complex volume form contain all the information about the intrinsic torsion of the $\SUn(n)$-structure. Furthermore, we apply the obtained results to almost hyperhermitian geometry. Thus, we show that the exterior derivatives of the three K{ä}hler forms of an almost hyperhermitian manifold are sufficient to determine the three covariant derivatives of such forms, i.e., the three mentioned exterior derivatives determine the intrinsic torsion of the ${\sl Sp}(n)$-structure.

In general dimension we find at most 167 different almost hyper-Hermitian structures. In particular, we obtain a number of relations that give hyperKäher or locally conformal hyperKähler structures, thus generalising a result of Hitchin. We also study the types of almost quaternion-Hermitian geometries that arise and tabulate the results.

Following the point of view of Gray and Hervella, we derive detailed conditions which characterize each one of the classes of almost quaternion-Hermitian $4n$-manifolds, $n>1$. Previously, by completing a basic result of A. Swann, we give explicit descriptions of the tensors contained in the space of covariant derivatives of the fundamental form $Ω$ and split the coderivative of $Ω$ into its ${\sl Sp}(n){\sl Sp}(1)$-components. For $4n>8$, A. Swann also proved that all the information about the intrinsic torsion $\nabla Ω$ is contained in the exterior derivative ${\sl d} Ω$. Thus, we give alternative conditions, expressed in terms of ${\sl d} Ω$, to characterize the different classes of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds.
