New insights in high-resolution spectroscopy: a wide theoretical library of R=500000 stellar spectra

Abstract: We present an extended theoretical library of over 800 synthetic stellar spectra, covering energy distribution in the optical range (lambda = 3500-7000 angstrom), at inverse resolution R=500000. The library, based on the ATLAS9 model atmospheres, has been computed with the SYNTHE code developed by R.L. Kurucz. Ultraviolet Properties of Primeval Galaxies: Theoretical Models from Stellar Population Synthesis

Galaxy emission below 3000 Angstroms directly correlates with actual star formation, not depending on the total mass of the system. A straightforward calibration is obtained, in this sense, from the theoretical models at 1600, 2000 and 2800 Angstroms, and a full comparison is carried out with IUE data and other balloon-borne observations for local galaxies. The claimed role of late-type systems as prevailing contributors to the cosmic UV background is reinforced by our results; at 2000 Angstroms Im irregulars are found in fact nearly four orders of magnitude brighter than ellipticals, per unit luminous mass. The role of dust absorption in the observation of high-redshift galaxies is assessed, comparing model output and observed spectral energy distribution of local galaxy samples. Similar to what we observe in our own galaxy, a quick evolution in the dust environment might be envisaged in primeval galaxies, with an increasing fraction of luminous matter that would escape the regions of harder and "clumpy" dust absorption on a timescale of some 10^7 yr, comparable with the lifetime of stars of 5-10 solar masses. △ Less

New insights on the accuracy of photometric redshift measurements

Abstract: We use the deepest and most complete redshift catalog currently available (the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North supplemented by new HDF South redshift data) to minimize residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshift estimates. The good agreement at z_spec < 1.5 shows that model libraries provide a good description of the galaxy population. At z_spec > 2.0, the systematic shift between ph… ▽ More We use the deepest and most complete redshift catalog currently available (the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North supplemented by new HDF South redshift data) to minimize residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshift estimates. The good agreement at z_spec < 1.5 shows that model libraries provide a good description of the galaxy population. At z_spec > 2.0, the systematic shift between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts decreases when the modeling of the absorption by the interstellar and intergalactic media is refined. As a result, in the entire redshift range 0 < z < 6, residuals between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts are roughly halved. For objects fainter than the spectroscopic limit, the main source of uncertainty in photometric redshifts is related to photometric errors, and can be assessed with Monte Carlo simulations. △ Less

Dust Absorption and the Cosmic UV Flux Density

We estimate the amount of energy absorbed by dust and hidden from optical observations by analyzing the HDF-N photometric data with the spectral energy distribution fitting method. A Grid of Synthetic Stellar UV Fluxes

Spectral classification of stars using synthetic model atmospheres

For stars in the A-K spectral range, effective temperature is obtained within a 1-2% relative uncertainty (at 2 sigma confidence level). This value raises to 4-5% for the hottest stars in the samples (O-B spectral types). A critical appraisal of the SED fitting method to estimate photometric redshifts

IR Colors and Sizes of Faint Galaxies

Abstract: We present J and Ks band galaxy counts down to J=24 and Ks=22.5 obtained with the new infrared imager/spectrometer, SOFI, at the ESO New Technology Telescope. The co-addition of short, dithered, images led to a total exposure time of 256 and 624 minutes respectively, over an area of $\sim20$ arcmin$^2$ centered on the NTT Deep Field. The total number of sources with S/N$>5$ is 1569 in the J samp… ▽ More We present J and Ks band galaxy counts down to J=24 and Ks=22.5 obtained with the new infrared imager/spectrometer, SOFI, at the ESO New Technology Telescope. The co-addition of short, dithered, images led to a total exposure time of 256 and 624 minutes respectively, over an area of $\sim20$ arcmin$^2$ centered on the NTT Deep Field. The total number of sources with S/N$>5$ is 1569 in the J sample and 1025 in the Ks-selected sample. These are the largest samples currently available at these depths. A d$logN$/d$m$ relation with slope of $\sim0.36$ in J and $\sim0.38$ in Ks is found with no evident sign of a decline at the magnitude limit. The observed surface density of ``small'' sources is much lower than ``large'' ones at bright magnitudes and rises more steeply than the large sources to fainter magnitudes. Fainter than $J\sim22.5$ and Ks$\sim21.5$, small sources dominate the number counts. Galaxies get redder in J-K down to J$\sim20$ and Ks$\sim19$. At fainter magnitudes, the median color becomes bluer with an accompanying increase in the compactness of the galaxies. We show that the blue, small sources which dominate the faint IR counts are not compatible with a high redshift ($z>1$) population. On the contrary, the observed color and compactness trends, together with the absence of a turnover at faint magnitudes and the dominance of small sources, can be naturally explained by an increasing contribution of sub-$L^*$ galaxies when going to fainter apparent magnitudes. Such evidence strongly supports the existence of a steeply rising ($α\ll-1$) faint end of the local infrared luminosity function of galaxies - at least for luminosities $L<0.01L^*$. △ Less

The Very Red Halo of the cD Galaxy in A3284

Abstract: We present deep CCD surface photometry in the Gunn g, r, i system and spectroscopy of the cD galaxy at the centre of the cluster A3284 at z = 0.15. The brightness profile of the galaxy has been tracked up to 40 arcsec (142 kpc) from the centre, and down to 26 mag/arcsec^2. The core and halo components in the galaxy have been singled out deriving geometrical parameters of the fitting isophotes as… ▽ More We present deep CCD surface photometry in the Gunn g, r, i system and spectroscopy of the cD galaxy at the centre of the cluster A3284 at z = 0.15. The brightness profile of the galaxy has been tracked up to 40 arcsec (142 kpc) from the centre, and down to 26 mag/arcsec^2. The core and halo components in the galaxy have been singled out deriving geometrical parameters of the fitting isophotes as well as magnitudes and colours. The spectral properties of the galaxy core indicate a stellar population super metal-rich with [Fe/H] = +0.5. The cD halo is clearly dominant at 45 kpc from the galactic centre and has exceedingly red colours (g-r = 1.03, g-i = 1.82), about 0.7 mag redder than the core g-i. A match with the models for evolutionary population synthesis by Buzzoni (1989) show that the halo is consistent with a population of unevolved M-dwarf stars lower than 0.7 M_\odot. The M/L ratio in B for the halo is estimated to range between 50 and 200 implying a total mass for the cD galaxy of 1.6-3.1~10^{13} M_\odot and a total B luminosity of 6.0~10^{11} L_\odot. △ Less

Abstract: Buzzoni's (1989) grid of synthetic spectral energy distributions, representative of old stellar populations, was used to derive colours in different photometric systems, and to compare the theoretical predictions with the observational data referring to about $120$ globular clusters in the Galaxy and to $159$ objects of the globular cluster system of M31. Synthetic and observed indices display a… ▽ More Buzzoni's (1989) grid of synthetic spectral energy distributions, representative of old stellar populations, was used to derive colours in different photometric systems, and to compare the theoretical predictions with the observational data referring to about $120$ globular clusters in the Galaxy and to $159$ objects of the globular cluster system of M31. Synthetic and observed indices display an overall agreement in the composite planes of two-colour diagrams, thus in agreement with the standard evolutionary scenario leading, for globular clusters, to old stellar populations consistent with an age of $15$ Gyr and a Salpeter initial mass function (IMF). The two main parameters modulating the cluster colour distributions are, as known, metallicity and horizontal branch morphology, while IMF slope and mass loss rate from stars in the red-giant branch and asymptotic-giant branch evolutionary stages produce only minor, although not negligible, effects on the integrated colours. The M31 and Galactic cluster populations are found to be substantially similar, at least as far as the spectral energy distribution characteristics in the $U \to V$ spectral range are concerned. △ Less
